Over the last two years, UTB and TSC has been

ranked among the top five Texas universities for

expenditures in fields such as aerospace technology

and biomedical research. Among the centers for

excellence in research at UTB and TSC are the Center

for Biomedical Studies and the Center for Gravitational

Wave Astronomy. Unique research opportunities

include studying at the university’s Rancho del

Cielo Field Station in Mexico and participating in the

Bahia Grande Project, one of the largest wetlands

restoration projects in the United States.

sTudenT life.There are many ways for UTB and TSC students to relax and play on campus. There are over 60 registered student clubs on campus, and Student Life organizes movie nights, parties and holiday events. Dorm residents are treated to special events at their “home away from home.” The Student Union has a popular game room and a café where students like to hang out with friends.

Campus reCreaTion.UTB and TSC opened its new Recreation, Education and Kinesiology Center in 2009. A dual-purpose facility with more than 100,000 square feet, it houses the Department of Health and Human Performance in its education wing, with Campus Recreation in the other wing. The REK Center is open for use by all registered students.

Activities include:•• Fitness and wellness programs•• Intramural sports•• Club sports•• Aquatics and special events

Facilities include:•• Six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool and leisure deck•• Three-court gymnasium•• Two racquetball courts•• Cardio and strength training equipment•• 1/9 mile indoor jogging and walking track•• Two multipurpose group fitness studios•• 18-hole golf course

aThleTiCs.UTB and TSC is also a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and is affiliated with the Red River Athletic Conference. Scorpion athletics includes men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, baseball, and men’s and women’s golf.

The Scorpion men’s soccer team were Red River Athletic Conference Champions three years running, 2007-2009, and women’s soccer were the league Co-Champions in 2008.

The UTB and TSC Chess Team competes at the highest level at state, national and international levels placing third in The President’s Cup (Final Four) in 2008.

admissions CheCKlisT.Getting admitted as a first-time freshman is the first step to pursuing your goals and the limitless possibilities at UTB and TSC.

sTep 1: apply for admission• Online (utb.edu or applytexas.org)• In person (Office of Admission and

Recruiting, Tandy Hall, Room 115)

sTep 2: suBmiT aCademiC CredenTials

Submit one of the following academic credentials to the Office of Admissions and Recruiting:• Official high school transcript (must be sent directly

from the high school to the university)• GED certificate with scores• Two letters of reference if applying under

the “individual approval” standards

sTep 3: suBmiT proof of residenCySubmit two proofs of Texas-state residency for tuition purposes to the Office of Admissions and Recruiting. (All residency documents must include the applicant’s name, address and be dated 12 months prior to the first class day.)

Examples of proof of residency include: lease agreement, valid permanent Texas driver’s license or ID card, Texas high school or college transcript.Note: If you are a naturalized citizen or legal resident, submit a photocopy

of your naturalization certificate or Permanent Resident card.

sTep 4: BaCTerial meningiTis reQuiremenTsAll new entering students, defined as first-time freshmen, returning and transfer students must provide one of the following requirements to Admissions :

• Certification from a health care practitioner evidencing that the student has received vaccination or booster five years and at least 10 days prior to the first day of class.

• An affidavit or a certificate from a physician licensed to practice in the U.S. stating that the vaccination would be injurious to the health and wellbeing of the student.

• An affidavit signed by the student indicating the vaccination for bacterial meningitis has been declined for reasons of conscience such as religious beliefs. A completed, notarized “Exemption from Immunization for Reasons of Conscience” form from the Texas Department of State Health Services must be used.

**Excludes students who are enrolled only in on-line classes or distance education courses and those who are over 30 years of age.

sTep 5: TesTingFirst-time freshman who are not exempt from the state-required assessment must take one of the state approved assessment tests, such as COMPASS, THEA, ACCUPLACER or the ASSET Writing Skills Test. For more information, call the Office of Testing at 956-882-8875 or visit Tandy Hall, Room 216.

sTep 6: apply for finanCial aid

Tuition assistance is available in the form of grants, work-study, loans and scholarships. Apply for financial aid using the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” form (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov using the school code (030646).

sTep 7: orienTaTion and advising

Attending orientation is mandatory for all incoming freshmen. Students are required to complete admission, all three sections of the testing requirements and complete pre-advising before attending orientation.
