2 A beautiful place to liveThe University of Winchester spreads across an attractive campus within easy walking distance of the city centre and overlooks the South Downs. The campus offers a dynamic academic environment within a friendly, social and supportive community.

Winchester itself is one of the most beautiful cathedral cities in England. Relatively small, it combines lively modern city life with historic roots and unspoilt countryside. There are numerous cafés, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs; independent shops and boutiques alongside your high street favourites; theatres; a cinema; and many places of interest. Winchester holds the national Purple Flag status, which recognises cities that are safe and enjoyable places for a night out.

Beyond Winchester, the more cosmopolitan city of Southampton is just 15 minutes away; Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and the New Forest are close by; and we are only one hour away from London by train.

3 Home from homeWhere you live is really important, especially in your first year when you are trying to settle in. We want the transition into university life to be as easy as possible. Winchester’s supportive, friendly atmosphere and wide range of high quality accommodation means the University of Winchester feels like a home from home.

We currently have two self-catered student villages, with a third on the way. The award-winning West Downs Student Village, located only a few hundred metres from the main King Alfred Campus, offers a real community feel and has its own launderette, shop and café. All houses and flats include shared kitchens, and all single study rooms have either a washbasin or en-suite facilities. Queens Road Student Village was completed in 2010, and provides en-suite rooms arranged in flats, directly on the King Alfred Campus. The new Burma Road Student Village is currently under construction and opens in late 2012.

Alwyn, Beech Glade and St Elizabeth’s are our three catered halls, all of which are situated on the King Alfred Campus. Meals are provided in the excellent dining facilities on campus, and there are kitchenettes for snacks and drinks.

The University of Winchester aims to provide campus or University Managed Accommodation to all first year full-time undergraduates who hold Winchester as their firm choice. Additionally, we endeavour to provide students from non-EU countries and students with disabilities accommodation for the duration of the course. Generally the halls of residence are mixed, but there are certain single-sex areas. We offer specially designed accommodation for students with physical disabilities or hearing impairment.

4 We are here to helpEvery students’ wellbeing is important to us at Winchester. Our team of approachable advisers provide advice and information on a range of issues. From relationship problems to issues with your course and from exploring volunteering options to financial difficulties, Student Services are here to help.

Academic and career developmentWe can support you throughout your academic journey at the university with our study skills service, and offer advice and opportunities to help increase your employability.

WellbeingOur excellent counselling service offers confidential support to those students who need help, guidance or just someone to talk to. We have a Disabilities and Learning Diversity team; an on-site Doctor; and a Mental Health and Wellbeing Adviser.

ChaplaincyThe Chaplain plus a team of staff and students are there to provide support for those with a Christian faith, those of other faiths and those with no faith across the whole University community.

Student adviceOur team are available to offer advice, guidance and information on any matter whether it be personal, financial or course-related.

Money mattersA helpful financial service is readily available from Student Services and our Student Finance team. Any queries or problems regarding funding your studies or managing your money can be explored.

5 Money matters to usThe government has recently introduced a new fee regime for Universities.

Entering the University of Winchester in 2013 tuition fees will be £8,500 per year for new full-time undergraduates (subject to approval from the Office for Fair Access).

There is financial support available from the government in the form of student loans and, for those who qualify, grants. The University offers financial support in the form of fee waivers, bursaries and scholarships. Your fees are used to provide you with an academically strong experience. Furthermore, we believe excellent students deserve excellent facilities and we continue to invest in the student experience in the form of new buildings, equipment and other resources.

6 Great facilities and learning resourcesThe University of Winchester boasts a fantastic range of facilities to help you during your studies.

Over 300,000 resources are available in the Martial Rose Library, from course-specific reading material to academic journals and DVDs. There are over 600 networked PCs available for students to use across campus in the Library, the IT centre, faculty buildings and the Learning Café. The Learning Café offers 24-hour a day access, 50 PCs, comfy seating for group work or relaxing, wireless access and a café.

Our multimedia centre boasts a newly refurbished purpose-built industry standard HD TV studio; a newsroom with Apple computers; radio studios and audio facilities; and the latest video editing software. Students can access a free loan service offering a wide range of equipment including media players, cameras, laptops and more.

Open seven days a week, Winchester’s impressive Sports Stadium comprises of an eight-lane athletics track; field discipline facilities such as jump pits and shot circles; a tiger turf all-weather pitch; floodlighting; and state of the art changing facilities. The Fitness Suite on the King Alfred’s Campus offers excellent gym facilities at a very reasonable price, whilst the Sports Hall is the hub for indoor games such as basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton or squash.

We have a Chapel and a Muslim Prayer Room, and a Faith Space is planned for faith and non-faith groups.

Our Link Gallery is open to the general public and runs exhibitions throughout the year featuring established and emerging artists.

The Research and Knowledge Exchange Centre is dedicated to research, enterprise and consultancy and provides excellent resources for postgraduate students.

For those musical students you can join the Foundation Music network; be a part of ensembles, workshops, performances and concerts; and receive instrumental and vocal tuition.

We have a range of professional rehearsal and performance spaces, and dance studio facilities, both located in our purpose-built award-winning Performing Arts Studios and Student Union.

Investment in the future of the University of Winchester continues with a £5.6 million state-of-the-art Learning and Teaching Building.

7 The social sideThe city of Winchester offers many pubs, bars and restaurants, just a ten minute walk from the University. If that is too far, why not enjoy an evening out at our Student Union which forms the largest part of the award-winning University Centre and is the social hub on campus.

Our club venue The Vault often hosts evening entertainment such as comedy nights and quiz nights. It can be transformed from dancefloor to theatre with a stage and staggered seating for film showings, concerts and performances. This 1,200 capacity venue is also home to the Terrace Bar and Learning Café where you can go to relax, and a Games Room to keep you entertained.

You can join a variety of clubs, associations and societies at the University of Winchester. We cater for all your interests, from sports teams to choirs and from book clubs to ultimate frisbee.

There are over 35 active sports clubs. Make use of our impressive sporting facilities on campus, the Winchester Stadium and the local Leisure Centre.

Feeling peckish? Our Food Hall caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Alternatively, head into Winchester city centre to eat at one of the many cafés, or sample food in restaurants owned by leading chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Raymond Blanc.

Winchester is home to some fantastic unique boutiques, in addition to your favourite high street names.

There is so much do see and do in Winchester; go for a walk on the South Downs; visit the Cathedral; look at King Arthur’s Round Table; head to the cinema inside a converted military chapel; or go and see a performance at the Winchester Theatre.

8 Lively and diverse student populationWe delight in diversity and believe in the importance of the wellbeing, opinion and views of individuals. Consequently, we aim to ensure all your needs are met and catered for whilst you study at the University of Winchester. From teaching support to student services, we are here to help.

We attract a diverse group of students from a variety of different backgrounds and ages. We are a small university so it is easy to get to know people and make friends quickly in our safe, supportive environment.

A growing number of international and European students are making the University of Winchester their first choice for UK study. We have dedicated members of staff in the International team to advise you about life and study at Winchester.

We also have a dedicated Disability Support team for students with disabilities. The team work to ensure an actively inclusive

environment. From advice regarding Disabled Students’ Allowance to settling you into suitable accommodation on campus we will work with you to identify and meet your needs.

Around 35 per cent of our students are over 21 when they begin their course at Winchester. We welcome mature students, whether you are hoping to gain an academic qualification or training for a new career. Again, we have a team of advisers to support you with the issues that matter to you.

Located at the West Downs Campus, our Nursery is run by fully-qualified staff and is registered with Social Services as a day nursery to take children between the ages of six weeks and five years.

9 EmployabilityIt is becoming increasingly important for students to demonstrate to employers a portfolio of skills and experience. While our courses are employment focused, Winchester offers you more than just a degree. We want you to have a great student experience and a career at the end which makes your investment of time and money worthwhile. We aim to help you to improve your employability, give you an edge and help you reach your full potential.

Our graduates have a strong track record of finding employment after leaving Winchester. Based on the latest survey results, 90.07 per cent of graduates were working or studying six months after graduation.

We have a dedicated careers service to provide information, advice and guidance to help you with career planning, researching employers and developing your employability skills. In addition to organising recruitment fairs we offer a series of workshops, such as CV writing and interview techniques, to help you acquire and develop knowledge, skills and expertise valued by employers.

Our JobShop advertises job vacancies on campus and locally; vacation work; national graduate job vacancies; work placements; work experience; and volunteering opportunities. Furthermore, the University of Winchester is a partner in the Graduate Jobs South (GJS) initiative; the GJS helps students and graduates find employment and other career opportunities.

Exclusive to Winchester, the Winchester Passport is an optional, non-credit bearing certificate for undergraduate students to recognise and reward you for carrying out a range of activities and experiences, in addition to your course, which enhance your graduate employability skills.
