HAZE
- Haze is caused when sunlight encounters tiny pollution particles in the air especially PM 2.5.
- More pollutants, more absorption and scattering of light.
- Natural or manmade air pollutant.
- Natural windblown dust, soot from wildfires,
- Manmade Vehicles, industrial fuel burning, manufacturing operations.
- Complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets.
- Size of particles linked to their potential for causing health problems.
- PM10 inhalable coarse particles, 2.5~10 micrometers. Eg, near roadways and dusty industries.
- PM 2.5 fine particles, smaller than 2.5 micrometers. Eg, forest fires, gases from power plants, industries.
- Premature death in people with heart or lung disease, aggravated asthma, increased respiratory symptoms such as irritation of airways, coughing or difficulty breathing.
PARTICULATE MATTER (PM)
Indoor air is 2-5 times polluted than outdoor air!!!!
INDOOR AIR POLLUTION
Is outdoor air quality better than indoor air quality?
VOC
- Volatile organic compounds are organic chemicals that have high vapor pressure in room temperature.
- Large number of molecules evaporate to surroundings.- Harmful VOCs typically not acutely toxic, but have
compounding long-term health effects.- Major manmade VOCs: Protective coatings, paints, CFCs,
methylene chloride.- Newly furnished buildings or furniture.
Refurnished buildings
