At our massive training facility in Stavanger, Aker

Well Service gives future generations of offshore

technicians first-hand experience in critical well

    intervention activities.

Up until recently, it was common practice for oil

companies to send new personnel onboard a

production platform to undergo on-the-job training.

Today; the number of the world’s production sites

is soaring, along with production costs and thecertificate requirements to crews. While onboard

training is increasingly considered too costly,

risky and time consuming, the hands-on practical

training that it provided is as important as ever.

Aker Solutions’ Well Intervention Academy is located

at Forus; the heart of Norway’s petroleum industry.

The centre consists of complete testing and

training facilities needed to get as close to real

offshore conditions as possible. While offering

practical and theoretical training in today’s and

    tomorrow’s well intervention techniques, the

facilities also enable Aker Well Service and our

clients to test the performance of well interventionequipment; in existing and in new applications.

    Training

Human error is recorded as the leading cause of

HSE incidents. Intensive, realistic training situations

provide the best opportunity to improve HSE perfor-

mance and employees’ judgement in critical situa-

tions. As HSE performance is top priority for Aker

Well Service and our customers, we have made

HSE training a focus area in the academy. All

theoretical and practical training includes HSE

procedures and best practice review as an

    integrated part of the course.

The Well Intervention Academy offers over 20

different courses on a range of well intervention,

HSE and certificate based topics. In cooperation

with our satellite centre, we offer IWCF certifica-

tion for both Well Intervention and Rotary Drilling

in Stavanger and Bergen. Our courses are offered

not only to Aker Solutions’ employees, but also to

our customers. Our courses range from introduc-

tory courses to highly technical courses in

operation and maintenance of complex tools

    and services.

    Testing

The testing facilities at the Well Intervention Academy can test wireline tractors and wireline

    tractor applications, wireline surface equipment,

    down-hole equipment, logging equipment and

    riserless well intervention equipment.

    learning-by-doing• Use of e-learning

The main objective for the test

    and training centre:

    • Reduce the risk of accidents and incidents

    • Hands-on training

    • Testing of equipment

    • Develop and test new technology

    • Customized tests to client’s requirements

    Testing and development

Being able to test new technology in controlledsurroundings is a huge advantage in preference to

testing in an offshore well; you have more control

and overview over the situation. You eliminate the

risk of misruns and loss of production; there are

reduced HSE hazards; and it will minimize

down-time by pinpointing faults at an early stage.

    Facilities

The Aker Solutions Well Intervention Academy

    features new and state-of-the-art technology

to prepare our well intervention technicians for the

future operating environment. The centre offers

highly modern and practical facilities, with

everything situated within the perimeter of thebase. In addition to classrooms, canteen, work-

shop and showroom; the centre also includes

    a 28 m high skid-able well intervention tower,

    a 50 m long horizontal tractor loop, control-room,

    a 40 m deep vertical well and a 390 m completed

well with the opportunity to pressurize and

    circulate.

We employ direct-electric winches, as these will

increasingly take over for diesel and electric/

    hydraulic-driven. The academy’s next generation

control systems allows training in wireline, logging

and tractor control, as well as operations, andintegrated control of all three at once.

Operational performance is our top key

performance indicator, and we strive to

    achieve world class performance.

    Coursephilosophy

One of Aker Well Service’s core values is

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). All our

procedures and guidelines are modeled with

HSE in focus and are implemented throughout

our organization; offshore as well as onshore

including the Well Intervention Academy (WIA).

We can offer a great variety of well intervention

courses; ranging from introduction to the oil &

gas industry to more specific areas as wireline

operations, basic completion courses as well

as courses in wireline tractor and cased hole

logging. In addition, AWS is certified to offer

    IWCF courses and certification (pressure

control) in both drilling and well intervention

which we arrange on a regular basis.

Our main philosophy is “hands on training”,

meaning all our courses combine theory with

practical demonstration of surface equipmentand downhole tools. All of the equipment at

WIA is identical with equipment utilized in

    offshore operations.

Integrated Operations (IO) is a field that

is getting more and more attention and

this will also be a focus area in the years

to come. IO is one of our focus areas, and

AWS is a great contributor in the development

of new technology and standards as well as

finding alternative solutions to perform well

    interventions.

    WIA is equipped with state-of-the-art

equipment such as fully electrical wirelinewinches which can be operated from remote

locations, live data transfer allowing monitoring

    of offshore operations and more.

    Course types:

We separate our courses into three groups:

    Pressure control, introductory and common

courses. Our IWCF pressure control courses are

fulfilled with a certifying IWCF exam. Our intro-

ductory courses require no previous knowledge.

Our common courses are intended for personnel

    with some experience. These recommended

requirements are thoroughly described in the

course descriptions in this catalogue. In additionto the courses in the course catalogue, we are

working continuously to improve our range of

courses. We can also make adjusted courses

custom made for our customers’ needs. All our

courses are constantly updated and improved.

The training conducted at AWS is certified to ISO

9001 and ISO 14001 standard. Our Well

Intervention Academy has also been audited by

the International Well Control Forum (IWCF) and

is certified to issue IWCF certificates in both

    rotary drilling and well intervention.
