1. Studies Abroad: Great Britain 1 or 2 credits

Come learn in historical surroundings that date back to the 11th Century – The Tower of London, and even back to

the 2nd Century – The Roman Ruins at Bath. This will be true learning in context! There are few instructional

methods for learning the social sciences as effective as actually being in the presence of primary sources. The cost

for the Graduate Credit portion of this workshop is $145 per credit with the option of earning one or two credits.

2. Unwrapping the Read Aloud 1 credit

Instructor: Sue Farag Course #: EDUC 4967-03 Level: K-5

Dates: 2/8 (5 pm-9 pm) and 2/9 (8 am-5:30 pm) Location: DAV 109B

This workshop will provide opportunities to make every read aloud intentional, inspiring students with the magic

of a story while helping them become skilled and passionate readers and writers. Learn to use read-aloud books as

additional connections that directly affect state-assessed indicators. You will be provided ideas to use across the

curriculum and given the keys to making the most of wonderful stories begging to be read aloud. Participants

need to bring four picture books

for reading aloud. Two books should be fiction and two books should be non-fiction, all of which fit with

their grade-level curriculum.

3. Instructional Strategies that Work for All Disciplines 2 credits

Teachers: Come learn practical applications of a variety of research-based instructional strategies. All strategies

will have hands on and/or cooperative learning activities for you to apply in the classroom. It’s true—you can

instruct and have fun! There is a $5 materials fee due to instructor on 1st day of workshop.

4. The Way They Learn-The Way We Teach 1 credit

As a teacher, you are well aware that all of your students are different people. But, what does that mean as to the

way they learn and, as a result, the way you need to teach? Did you know that there are eight different learning

styles and four basic temperaments? Do you know your own, let alone your students? Instead of just having

questions, come get the answers! Be able to modify instructional techniques in order to teach each student most

effectively.

5. Making Learning Last: Using Brain Research in the Classroom 1 credit

Do you sometimes “teach” a lesson, but your students don’t retain the information in the long term? Are you

yearning for a more dynamic learning environment and ways to engage your students, but keep finding yourself

stuck in a “teaching rut?” If so, come learn what brain researchers have discovered that you can immediately put to

use in your classroom. You can help your students retain material, create an exciting learning environment, and

motivate yourself at the same time! Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to class and will be asked

during the second class session to share ideas for implementing brain-based strategies.

Discover new ways to use Microsoft Publisher templates. We will spend time exploring the following templates:

business cards, postcards, certificates (award & gift), flyers, calendars, newsletters, brochures, posters, and others.

No more fumbling around trying to figure out how to do that next publishing project! This course is a blended

class; participants will meet on site one time and work the remainder of the time using Moodle.

7. *NEW* Overcoming Dysfunction 1 credit

Dates: 2/23 and 3/2 (9 am-4:30 pm) Location: BTB 100

Isn’t it discouraging when you are part of a dysfunctional team – don’t we all really just want to get along? Teachers

and students alike have difficulty functioning as a team sometimes. In this workshop we will discuss Patrick

Lencioni’s model of dysfunction, taking an effective business-based approach and applying it to your classroom

team scenarios. A mixture of models, discussions, and hands-on activities will be ready for classroom use. There is

a $10 materials fee due to instructor on 1st day of workshop. Bring your laptop, if you have one available.

8. Tips, Tricks, & Techniques for Using Microsoft Word 1 credit

Did you know that there are many shortcuts that can decrease your work time? Are you using Microsoft Word as

efficiently as possible? This workshop could be for you, even if you are a regular user. Learn basics and features

you never knew how to use including format painter, text boxes, find and replace, re-coloring pictures, etc.

9. Upgrade Your Teacher Toolkit 2 credits

most current educational trends and research-based best practices. Starting with a look back at the historical

purposes for education, workshop participants will follow the path of modern education, debunk some of the more

damaging teaching myths, and discover fresh ideas and strategies that will increase the achievement levels of their

students. Expect to hear songs and stories, enjoy sharing with other educators, and relish thinking deeply about

your career.

10. Get A Clue– Inquiry Labs 1 credit

You do not need expensive labs to teach students critical thinking that matches the science CORE standards! Would

you like to learn some fast, easy ways that content can be imparted through hands-on, fun, and short labs? Would

you like to know about a simple, cheap piece of technology that helps students with learning disabilities and also

helps students who are absent from school? This workshop will answer these questions and much more! Come

have fun while learning. There is a $15 materials fee due to instructor on 1st day of workshop; bring a flash

drive to save your material electronically. Working dinner on Friday/working lunch & dinner on Saturday.

11. iPad + More in Schools 1 credit

New to iPads or just looking for more ways to incorporate them into the classroom? We will go over the basics of

the iPad and other technologies, along with ways of using them in the school setting. Participants will have a

chance to become more familiar with technologies and programs available for education. Bring your latest tech

device (iPhone, iTouch, etc.) and we will explore its use.

12. *NEW* Character Lessons from the Pages of History 1 credit

Teaching values and character in the classroom will become exciting when students learn about people from our

past who demonstrated uncommon character in the face of life’s challenges. Educators will go back to their

classrooms with stories of famous and not-so-famous people—from George Washington to Grover Cleveland, from

Irena Sendler to Sir Nicholas Winton—who exemplified character qualities such as honesty, humility, optimism,

courage, and self-discipline in their lives. There is a $10 materials fee due to instructor on 1st day of

13. Get Caught in the Web: Websites in the Classroom 2 credits

So long pencil and paper; start using exciting websites in your classroom! We will look at comic strip creators,

word clouds, trading card creators, presentation websites, and additional websites that benefit both teacher and

student. Exciting ways to inject new life into your classroom projects will be demonstrated! This course is a

blended class; participants will meet on site one time and work the remainder of the time using Moodle.

No pre-registrations will be taken the first day of the workshop. All pre-registration must be completed prior to the start of the workshop.

An e-mail reminder with a class-specific map will be sent the week before the start of the workshop.

No refunds will be issued beginning one week prior to the workshop start date. A $25 cancellation fee per credit will be assessed on all refunds requested. If the minimum number of participants do not enroll, the workshop will be cancelled, whereupon you will be notified and a full refund will be given.

All workshops will be letter-graded. As a result, projects/assignments will be assessed. Unofficial grade letters will be mailed out by Registrar after the grades have been posted to transcript.
