I will be scouring the internet to help find you the inspiration and projects you need to get you working in your sketchbooks, journals and visual diaries. This is
where your creativity and your unique ideas
will come from. It will also help you gain the
skills and confidence to take it to the next

December ART ESSENCE NEWSLETTER
Let’s continue.... This month I will encourage you to
scribble!! Well... maybe while you are
scribbling you are practicing your line
making with both pen and pencil.
Try out:
Different grades of pencils
Thickness of pen tips including
brush tip
Pressure light & heavy
Angles of your pen/pencil as well as
your hand and grip
Labelling your exercises
Shading lightest light to darkest
dark and back again
Layering your tonal values in light
layers
Different paper surfaces, tones and
weights – see what suits your style
Drawing tools – paper
stumps/blenders, erasers – are not
just for mistakes! They make
brilliant blending tools too.
YouTube Artists I can recommend:
Proko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMC0Cx3Uk84 Walid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0Yed7jSHok Draw with Jazza: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hcZDNH3_Wc
Alphonso Dunn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51_39lqZuJc
Don’t forget to loosen up before
you settle down to draw. This will
flip your brain into creative gear. Look at other artist’s sketchbooks to
get you inspired:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rcq9jqHW6M
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XjWzKD0mq8
Get comfortable and familiar with
your tools.
Don’t be afraid to completely fill
your pages with drawings and
doodles. Even if they are unfinished
or ‘not-so-good’ ones.
Remember, your sketches aren’t
necessarily for anyone else to see.
So draw like no-one is looking!
Draw Every Day. Yes... every day.
10 minutes is plenty if you are short
on time. And yes, doodling does
count. If nothing else, it helps you
become more familiar with your
tools.
So, swap FaceBook for a
Sketchbook and you will be
pleasantly surprised at your
improvements.
Happy Drawing!!
