Welcome to Wigmore Hall’s 110th anniversary

season. It has been a great pleasure and

privilege for me to put the celebratory

programme together – my fifth as Artistic

Director and in my tenth year as a member of

staff, as I joined the Hall (initially as Executive

Director) in the run-up to our 2001 centenary

celebrations. In the decade that has passed

since then, with the vital help of our donors

and patrons, we have been able to refurbish

the building, acquire a long-term lease of

250 years, launch a critically acclaimed record

label, Wigmore Hall Live, and expand our

programming in both traditional and new

directions, attracting record audiences. I see

this 110th anniversary season very much as a

tribute to all of those who have helped us

achieve so much over the past 10 years.

Our season-long celebrations reflect the great

traditions of the Hall: presenting the cream of

international artists and the leading composers of

our time. We launch the season with a six-concert

festival over five days, featuring Karita Mattila

and Martin Katz, Angelika Kirchschlager,

Ian Bostridge and Julius Drake and the Artemis,

Elias and Tokyo String Quartets. The celebrations

continue across the season and we are very

proud to welcome Martha Argerich and Stephen

Kovacevich, Daniel Barenboim, Matthias Goerne,

Dame Mitsuko Uchida, Cecilia Bartoli, Diana

Damrau, Alfred Brendel (for a lecture recital

series), Susan Graham, long-standing Wigmore

favourite András Schiff, Jonas Kaufmann in

Die schöne Müllerin with Helmut Deutsch,

Jordi Savall, Philippe Jaroussky, Thomas

Hampson, Andreas Scholl, the Takács Quartet

and Sandrine Piau, Christophe Rousset and

Les Talens Lyriques in a programme of sacred

songs. Two chamber music galas will be held on

31 May and 1 June 2011, the actual dates of the

Bechstein (now Wigmore) Hall inaugural

concerts in 1901. Very appropriately, reflecting

our commitment to both young artists and

new music, the celebrations conclude on

30 July with the London debut of the superb

New York-based Jack Quartet, whose energy

and panache bowled me over when I first

encountered them last year.

In a major series to mark the bicentenary of

Robert Schumann’s birth in 1810 we draw

together a diverse range of artists to celebrate

one of the most absorbing figures of German

Romanticism. The series takes in the six major

song-cycles (as well as many of his 250 or so

other songs, with a special emphasis on songs

composed during Schumann’s annus mirabilis

1840). We also feature the three string quartets

and the three piano trios, plus other chamber

music and major piano works. The series is

brought to life by Julius Drake, Imogen Cooper,

the Florestan Trio, the Vogler, Elias and Doric

String Quartets (who perform one of Schumann’s

quartets each in three of our autumn Sunday

morning coffee concerts). Singers participating

in the series include Mark Padmore, James

Gilchrist, Christopher Maltman, Gerald Finley,

Ian Bostridge, Soile Isokoski, Wolfgang Holzmair

and Kate Royal. Another major vocal project is

with Malcolm Martineau and distinguished

colleagues who take us on a 100 year journey

through the German song repertoire, culminating

in the period 1900 –1910, the Hall’s first decade.

Clarinettist Michael Collins joins us for a three-

concert residency across the season, featuring

him as both chamber musician and soloist in

a wide variety of repertoire. To mark the 30th

anniversary of the illustrious Hagen Quartet,

we present a six-concert series over the season.

I have invited the much-loved Steven Isserlis to

return as Artist in Residence for a French series in

which he draws together distinguished colleagues

for a survey of the chamber music of Saint-Saëns,

Fauré and Ravel. And we launch a four-concert

guitar series spotlighting an instrument whose

breathtaking versatility and range of musical

expression thrive in the Hall’s intimate acoustic.

We welcome John Williams, Manuel Barrueco

(from Cuba), Álvaro Pierri (Uruguay) and

Glasgow-born Galicia resident David Russell.

Soloist, chamber musician and conductor

Thomas Zehetmair, one of the most dynamic

violinists around, joins us for a Bach recital,

and an appearance within his quartet, as well as

a duo recital with violist Ruth Killius in music

spanning from Mozart to Heinz Holliger. The

distinguished Artemis Quartet continues with the

Beethoven cycle which commenced last season,

and we welcome back the Leopold String Trio

with pianist Aleksandar Madzar (who greatly

impressed our audience with his first evening

solo recital last season) for a concert which

includes Taneyev’s Piano Quartet in E Op. 20.

A new quartet by Mark-Anthony Turnage, written

for the Belcea Quartet and co-commissioned by

Köln Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw,

Vienna Konzerthaus and Wigmore Hall, will

receive its world première on 7 December with

the help of Fondation Hoffmann. We also

co-commission several new works with the

Britten Sinfonia, as part of their award-winning

Lunchtime Series.

Angela Hewitt returns for two concerts in which

she pairs works by Bach with six new works

commissioned by Wigmore Hall. Since 1991,

Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has been

Artistic Director of the internationally renowned

Risør Festival, alongside violist Lars Anders

Tomter. Each year several of the world’s leading

musicians convene there for an intensive period

of rehearsals and performances, and, this year,

the special atmosphere of these performances

comes to us in four concerts, also featuring

the Festival’s string orchestra. These will be

very memorable musical events taking place

from 26 –28 November.

Other highlights of the autumn booking period

include return visits from the world’s leading

trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger, the

Jerusalem Quartet, Ebène Quartet, and the

Emerson String Quartet, who will have a trio of

concerts. Christoph Prégardien and Andreas

Staier join us on 1 December. The Early Opera

Company soloists and chorus pack the Wigmore

stage for Handel’s Messiah on 19 December, and

the unconventional Patricia Petibon presents

her own brand of song recital on 21 December,

with a Christmas flavour. Later in the season we

look forward to Mark Padmore and Paul Lewis

in Schubert, and the London debut of pianist

Marino Formenti, one of the most interesting

interpreters of the present day, in a recital

entitled ‘Kurtág’s Ghosts’. We also celebrate

the music of Australian composer Brett Dean

in the spring. As usual, there is far too much to

Wigmore Hall marks its 110th anniversary with aseason-long celebration reflecting its long traditionof presenting both the cream of international artistsand leading composers of the day. Taking in the six major song-cycles (as wellas a broad selection of his 250 or so othersongs), the series includes a special focuson Schumann’s song output during the year1840. Presenting the three string quartets(performed across the Coffee Concert seriesby the Elias, Vogler and Doric Quartets) andthree piano trios, plus other chamber musicand major piano works, the series is broughtto life by major interpreters, including JuliusDrake (who oversees Schumann’s Songs of1840 for us), Imogen Cooper, Gerald Finley,Christopher Maltman, Kate Royal, IanBostridge and the Florestan Trio.

With a distinguished career that has spanned nearly five decades, Stephen Kovacevich is admired not only for his solo performances – especially for searchinginterpretations of the Classical and Romantic repertoire – but also as a chambermusician and conductor. His achievements show no signs of diminishing: in 2009

he won a Gramophone Award for his CD of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations – a work he included in his London debut here at Wigmore Hall in 1961, on which occasion The Times critic noted, ‘[He] may make a remarkable Beethoven pianist’.For his 70th-birthday concert Stephen Kovacevich is joined by a number of friendsand colleagues, chief among them Martha Argerich. Since 1991 Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes hasbeen Co-Artistic Director, with violist Lars Anders Tomter,of the internationally renowned chamber music festivalbased in the small fishing town of Risør on thesoutheastern coast of Norway. Each year some of theworld’s leading musicians converge there for an intensiveperiod of rehearsals and performances, and this yearthe special atmosphere of these performances comesto Wigmore Hall in a series of four concerts also featuringthe festival’s resident string orchestra. Among thesoloists are names familiar to Wigmore Hall audiences,including Martin Fröst, Henning Kraggerud and Canadiansoprano Measha Brueggergosman, a prizewinner ofthe Wigmore Hall Song Competition in 2001.

Five yearslater came the three ‘Razumovsky’ quartets, Op. 59, beginning a period ofexpansion that marked his ‘heroic’ middle period. With the late quartetsBeethoven, by now completely deaf, produced his greatest and mostphilosophical outpourings, turning to the string quartet as a laboratoryfor his innovative experiments in form, harmony and expression. THOMAS ZEHETMAIR

Soloist, chamber musician and conductor Thomas Zehetmair is one of the most dynamic andversatile violinists around. Having founded the Zehetmair Quartet in 1994, he became MusicDirector of the Northern Sinfonia in 2002, building its reputation as one of Europe’s leadingchamber orchestras. This season Zehetmair also became an Artistic Partner of the Saint PaulChamber Orchestra in Minneapolis. John Gilhooly invited Zehetmair to have a special residencyand this three-concert series opens a window on his range of talents, beginning with a soloBach recital and continuing next year – when he appears within his quartet, as well as in a duo recital (with his wife, violist Ruth Killius), in music spanning from Mozart to Heinz Holliger.

BRAD MEHLDAU ATWIGMORE HALLJazz pianist Brad Mehldau is one of the most exciting musicians inhis field today, touring and recording extensively with great success.Having been invited by John Gilhooly to curate Wigmore Hall’s JazzSeries from September 2009, Brad Mehldau brought his inimitablestyle to bear in a series of concerts over the 2009/10 season. Thisincluded a solo performance, appearances with Joshua Redman andthe Brad Mehldau Trio, and a programme of both jazz and classicalmusic with the mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, including theUK première of new work co-commissioned by Wigmore Hall,Carnegie Hall and KölnMusik.

Brad Mehldau continues his curatorship this year, inviting friendsfrom across the musical spectrum to participate in a variety of duoperformances which will explore the limits of improvisatory andexperimental contemporary composition, in addition to moreconventional work in the jazz tradition. Italian vocalist Diana Tortojoins renowned British pianist John Taylor on 6 May; whilst Germanreeds player Klaus Gesing joins forces with the ubiquitous Britishpianist Gwilym Simcock on 2 June. In the autumn, Brad Mehldauhimself forms two all-American partnerships, with versatile mandolinplayer Chris Thile on 16 September, and acclaimed singer Joe Henryon 2 December, concluding what promises to be an extraordinaryand thought-provoking series of collaborations. This brings Brad’stenure as Jazz Series Curator to a close.
