Primary 4A Curriculum for Excellence
Experiences and Outcomes
Literacy
1 Having explored the elements writers use in
different genres, I can use what I learn to
compose my own stories, poems and plays with
interesting structures, characters and/or
settings. ENG 128AH2 Using what I know about the features of
different types of texts, I can find, select,
sort and use information for a specific pur-
pose. LIT 114Q
3I am learning to make notes under given
headings and use these to understand infor-
mation, explore ideas and problems and create
new texts. LIT 115R4I can communicate clearly when engaging with
others within and beyond my place of learning, us-ing selected resources as required. LIT 110K
Social Subjects
1 By exploring a natural environment different from my own, I can
discover how the physical features influence the variety of living
things. SOC 113K
2 To develop my mental map and sense of place, I use my surround-
ing area as a learning environment and I can use and create maps of
this area. SOC 114L
Expressive Arts
1 I have enjoyed choosing and exploring a range of media and han-
dling them with growing confidence and skill, discovering their ef-
fects and suitability for specific tasks. EXA 105E
2 Through observing and recording from my experiences across the
curriculum, I can generate a range of visual information, sometimes,
for example, in the form of sketches, diagrams or maps. EXA 107G
3 I enjoy singing and playing music from a range of styles and cul-tures showing growing confidence and skill and can use performance
directions, symbols, words and/or notation to enhance performance.
EXA 114S
4 Working on my own or with others, I can show developing confi-
dence and skills in creating and presenting drama, exploring real and
imaginary situations, using for example mime, improvisation and
script. EXA 112N
5 I have enjoyed creating short dance sequences choosing from thebody actions of travel, turn, jump, gesture, pause and fall. EXA
109K
USING THE PLANNERS
The Experiences and Outcomes on this page re-
late to the range of activities on page 1. After
each activity is a number which links to the I
can statements and codes on this page.
In practice, on the first page, we have high-
lighted the activities chosen by the children in
blue and the ones we as teachers have chosen in
green. With so many activities listed it would be
impossible to get through them all in a term!
Feel free to pick and choose what suits your
class.
Technology/ICT1 During practical activities and design challenges, I can estimate
and measure using appropriate instruments and units. TCH 106C
2 Through discovery, natural curiosity and imagination, I can de-
velop and use problem solving strategies to meet design chal-
lenges or construct models TCH 107D
3 Having evaluated my work, I can adapt and improve, where ap-
propriate, through trial and error or by using feedback. TCH
108D
4I can create, capture and manipulate sounds, text and images to
communicate experiences, ideas and information in creative and
engaging ways TCH 111G
5 I use different technologies to interact and share experiences,
ideas and information with others, and am developing my knowl-
edge and use of safe and acceptable conduct. TCH 110F
Numeracy
1 I can estimate how long or heavy an object is, or what
amount it holds, using everyday things as a guide, then
measure or weigh it using appropriate instruments and
units. MNU 112M
2 I have used a range of ways to collect information and
can sort it in a logical, organised and imaginative way us-
ing my own
and others criteria. MNU 125W
Citizenship/Enterprise
*I know the rights to which I am entitled in society and
the responsibilities which fall on me. I am learning to re-
spect the rights of others
Science
1 I have observed and recorded some features of living
things which allows me to place them in groups. Using this
information I can sort living and non living things into groups
giving reasons for my decisions. SCN 102B

Our suggested way into this topic is to show the children a kit for growing a class butterfly farm. We found ours at http://www.wildaboutnature.co.uk/ShowDetails.asp?id=197. Inform the children that in order to grow the butterflies we have to find out more about
them and other minibeasts. Complete a class KUW grid to set out the questions to be investigated, referred and added to throughout the topic.
