The FRENCH Program at Chapman University has a long tradition of excellence with great instructors who enhance the learning atmosphere with their unique insights on various aspects of the Francophone world. Studying French at Chapman is

a tremendous experience that empowers the learner to choose the direction of their own education within the degree itself. The framework for a major or minor is in place with several choices available every semester.

▼ Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Chapman University Presidential Fellow Elie Wiesel guest lectures entirely in French Dr. Boitano’s seminar on his writings.

Learning languages is like learning history from the inside out. It encompasses the battles of ethnicity, religion, compromise, politics. So much can be learned from

language because it’s been shaped by history. –David Webb

InternationalGlobal StudiesStudying abroad offers a unique opportunity for immersion into other languages and cultures. Chapman Study Abroad coordinates programs lasting from one semester to an academic year in length. French majors and minors choose from a vast array of abroad programs across the French speaking world. Many students, who double major in Film and Television and French, participate in the American Institute for Foreign Studies (AIFS) spring semester program in Cannes, France. This interdisciplinary program features a unique internship opportunity at the world-renowned international Cannes film festival.

Language majors and minors can take advantage of a rich array of study abroad opportunities with semester and year-long programs at such prestigious universities of higher education as the University of Granada (Spain), The University of Paris IV: La Sorbonne (France), Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) and many others.

▼ Students stay with a host family while taking an immersive French class (all levels are offered from the elementary to advance).

▼ Summer travel course

Individual Mentorships Full-time faculty, who are fluent in French and have first-hand experience with the study-abroad programs in the French-speaking world, provide French majors and minors with excellent mentorship and advising. Students meet with their faculty mentor before studying abroad so as to compare and contrast different programs and to establish course equivalencies prior to departure. Faculty assist students with graduate and professional school applications by writing meaningful letters of recommendation. Students collaborate with faculty on research projects by doing joint presentations at scholarly conferences. Faculty also help students to identify grant and scholarship opportunities.

InternshipsEach year, the French Government selects several of our graduating French majors and minors to spend a year in France as English teaching assistants in middle and high schools. This French version of the Fulbright program is highly competitive as both undergraduate and graduate students apply from across America. Students can also complete an internship over the summer with a French company in Paris and other cities. The Center for Global Education coordinates international internships for students, which can provide students with academic credit.

Interdisciplinary The BA in French is both interdisciplinary and innovative in both scope and nature. The program adopts a “studies” approach to offer advanced courses, which go beyond literary studies. Students select classes of interest from Business French (FR 347) to French Opera in the Age of the Sun King (FR 354), which has won the Chapman co-teaching award and is team taught by Dr. Boitano and Dr. Thomas of the Music Department. The major features 4 upper-division classes, which focus on French film studies. Several advanced classes have a unique historical and ethical component such as French Writers of the Holocaust, which Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Chapman Presidential Fellow Elie Wiesel guest lectures each spring semester. French majors or minors, who are not able to spend a semester abroad, often take advantage of faculty led classes to France over the Interterm (January Term) and summer session such as our Interterm A Tale of Two Cities: London and Paris (FREN 353c) travel seminar or the summer session on the French Riviera during which students enjoy a three-week home stay with a French family while immersing themselves in the language and culture at a local language school. The breath and scope of the French program at Chapman University is truly unprecedented in undergraduate education in America!

▼ FREN. 360: Students write, stage and act in their own French play in Dr. Oliver’s theatre class.

s FREN 375 and FREN 351: These classes have featured for the last four years a guest lecture by Holocaust Survivor and Author, Elie Wiesel, who conducts the class entirely in French.

Integrated The French major and minor constitute a fully-integrated program. Many of the classes are co-taught with colleagues across the campus such as Dr. Lee Estes of Chapman University’s award winning the History Department and Dr. Louise Thomas of the Music Department. The integrated junior-senior seminar class, which all French majors complete, allows student to conduct primary source research in French on any topic related to the France or the French speaking world. This research often complements the senior thesis of double majors in History, Political Science, English, and many other disciplines. Many Departments count our junior/senior seminar as an elective class towards their own major, thereby allowing students to more easily complete a double major with French.
