Spanish is widely spoken here in California and throughout the United States. The Spanish academic program is dedicated to promoting culturally and linguistically competent citizens in our multicultural and multilingual society. It is the largest program in the department, instructing more than 700 students each academic semester. More than 150 students choose Spanish as their major or minor for their undergraduate degree.

The professors in the Spanish academic program are dedicated to the communicative approach to language teaching in the lower-division program and offer a wide range of interdisciplinary courses on linguistics, literature and culture in the upper-division program. The department emphasizes student participation in a class size that is limited to 19 students for a more personalized education.

Learning languages is like learning history from the inside out. It encompasses the battles of ethnicity, religion, compromise, politics. So much can be learned from

language because it’s been shaped by history. –David Webb

InternationalGlobal StudiesStudying abroad offers a unique opportunity for immersion in other cultures and countries. Chapman Study Abroad coordinates study programs lasting from one semester to an academic year in length to a variety of destinations in Central America, South America and Spain. While abroad students enroll in a full course of study in various academic fields, they can receive Chapman credit and pay their regular Chapman tuition.

Language majors and minors can take advantage of a rich array of study abroad opportunities at such prestigious institutions of higher education as the University of Granada (Spain), The Institute for Central American Development Studies (Costa Rica and many others.

Individual International Internships and Research Spanish Majors and Minors are provided with unique opportunities to carry out individual projects in a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. Through the Center for Global Education, students may choose to do an internship in Spain or Chile in an area of their interest. This option is ideal for students with a minor or double major in Spanish since they may use their Spanish in an authentic arena which will benefit the career skills they are seeking. Students have found exciting internships in the public schools abroad, working in medical clinics, language schools and for the film industry. Prof. Hodge is the professor of note responsible for guiding the student’s in their academic pursuits in the internship. A special program for doing research in Peru has been designed by Prof. Valenzuela. Many Spanish majors and minors have traveled to remote areas in the Amazon to assist in a program for the preservation of indigenous languages. Students are guided in the process of interviewing indigenous people, transcribing and translating different types of texts and preparing a dictionary and other documents for publication.

Karen Aceves ’15 majored in Spanish and secured a job as Budget and Grants Analyst for the Southern California Association of Governments. “This position involves holding workshops in English and Spanish and translating documents to comply with federal regulations.

Dr. Ryan Van Ramshorst ’06 majored in Biology and Spanish because “We need future physicians who will be advocates for their patients in the examination room, in the community and in the halls of state and federal legislatures. Being fluent in Spanish helps him achieve this goal.

Interdisciplinary & Integrated Studies The BA in Spanish is interdisciplinary and innovative in both scope and nature. The program offers advanced courses which focus on three major study areas: Peninsular literature and culture; Latin American and US Latino literatures and cultures; and Linguistics. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted in each course so that students who graduate with a degree in Spanish become well-rounded global citizens as they complete core units of study. Courses integrate such disciplines as: linguistics, education, ethnicity and psycholinguistics in Spanish 440; language, history and geographical variations in Spanish 396 and 441; poetry, art and theater in Spanish 484; Hispanic theater and the Classics in Spanish 485; and technology and literature in Spanish 470, among many others. Proficiency in Spanish is a key element for success in any professional arena in today’s US and global job market. Our graduates use Spanish in a variety of fields such as the film industry, health care, psychology, teaching, academia, international companies and NGOs. Our alumni have continuously lauded the benefits of having acquired a fluent command of the language as a bridge to achieving their professional goals.
