From the President

Presidents News April 2015

Well, very busy time at the moment, end of the financial year, and

children back to school, university and “gap years”. Parents in hospital,

but all well. Then there are patients and staff.

The speaker in March Anthony Mak was excellent, well supported, had

great slides, information and we all received an excellent publication. This

small journal has fabulous photography and step-by- step pictures

showing his techniques .

I have renewed enthusiasm about composites after this last excellent

speaker. The patients that were used for presentation cases were very

“normal ,everyday” cases and the work was fantastic. Most of the dentists

I spoke to were very impressed; glad they attended and found it very

worthwhile. The products used were the GC composites , with a series of

tints supplied by Kerr. Henry Schein and GC were the sponsors and I

would like to thank them on our behalf.

The committee have been working hard on further information for the

Executive meeting of NZDA , in Auckland this week. We are well

represented by Dave Excell and Dave McKelvey.

The exciting news for Wellington, is our constant support for more

advocacy and promotional activity surrounding “sugary drinks”. This is

going forward to the National level and we can be grateful for having

Moira Smith and Anna Ferguson diligently working away at this issue.

There has been fantastic traction in Nelson with Rob Beaglehole , the

DHB and Council. They have already taken many sugary drinks from the

DHB Nelson and wellington CCDHB has now followed .

The website is looking fantastic this year, simple but effective.

Click on the month, then if the day has a dot, tap the date and the event will come

up, with speaker, venue, time and a brief synopsis. Export to your phone calendar,

if that helps.

The courses placed on our website are held in Wellington. This was done

specifically to help everyone in this region and promote support for those

workshops and speakers from out of town. It has been a great effort from Dave

McKelvey to continue using his time to load the data.

Another Thank you to all local speakers over the last year and I am very grateful

to those that have offered to speak this year. Local specialists and Generalists have

approached me, suggesting speakers and putting themselves forward to be a

speaker for 2015. It looks like a great line up, with some very interesting and

educational Topics. More to come in the next newsletter.

Cyclone Pam has brought many memories back of the torn and damaged Pacific

Islands, I worked on with the NZ Defence Force. The latest NZDF news also looks

at the Tsunami and has some fantastic articles, from individuals about their roles

and feelings in this area.

Timely to say we are going to be helping some very needy patients this year.

There will be three free dental days, supported by Southern Cross and Colgate.

The first one will be in May, 2015. The first will be at Symes de Silva and Sharyn

“ protégé” will be coordinating. The patients will be from the those organisations

supported by the Downtown Community Ministry.

Please put your names forward to help out on one of these days.

April, as it is Easter, is Endodontic month. The speaker will be Dikesh , from

Capital Endodontics .

I am looking forward to seeing you all there and will try not to say CR-p, again ,

whilst thanking the speaker.

COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS: President Dr Logan, Secretary Dr Symes, Treasurer Dr Hitchings, Complaints Officer Dr Tong, Welfare Office Dr Annan, GPDP Dr Ferry, Board Reps Drs Excell & McKelvey, Peer Review Drs Symes & Excell, Website Dr McKelvey, Student Observation Dr Wong, Mentors Dr Excell Branch Meeting Venue Options Dr Cho Dental Council Codes Dr Templeman, Dental Assistants Course Dr McBride DCM Drs Corcoran & Symes Dr McKelvey asked if there was any way in which we can get advanced notice of courses that are appropriate on our website giving our members plenty of notice as he finds that he has limited time to advertise them. Dr Logan agreed to contact Hugh Trengrove from NZDA to ask. Dr Logan sought feedback from the meeting to her suggestion of having an app developed that tells you how much acid there is in drinks. This is something that will be discussed at a later date. Dr McKelvey has a friend who is a Public Health Advisor working for the HVDHB and is interested in volunteering on the DCM initiative. It was agreed that Dr McKelvey should contact Dr Corcoran and offer her services.

Page 8: WILL CALL IT LUCK. YOU CAN CALL · The courses and content is diligently updated. It is mobile friendly and relates well ... April, as it is Easter, is Endodontic month. The speaker

Dr McKelvey had been approached by a company called „Triple Jump‟ offering to speak at a Branch meeting. It was agreed that as a sponsor this would be appropriate however not as a presenter at the Branch meeting. Dr McKelvey will liaise with Triple Jump and Dr Logan.

Dr Logan asked if the Committee felt it appropriate to make a donation on behalf of the Branch to the John Walsh Biography being written by Harvey Brown. John Walsh was the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago between 1947 and 1971. It was agreed that the Branch would donate $500.00 and the Admin Assistant is to contact Dr Annan as he may know where we send our donation.

ACTION Admin Assistant to contact Dr Annan

STUDENT OBSERVATION Dr Wong informed the meeting that dates for students coming to the Wellington area under this scheme is Monday 29

th June through to

Friday 3rd

July. Ami Gilchrist from NZDA is going to Otago University on the 18

th March. The numbers are unknown however

as an indication last year Christchurch hosted 18 students. To host a student you must be a NZDA member. Dr Wong will speak at the Branch meeting on Wednesday 4

th March and Dr McKelvey will

advertise it on the web site. The students will be invited to attend the branch meeting. Dr Excell stated that he had meetings with Anna Ferguson and Moria Smith and following on from that meeting he suggested that they contact Deepa Krishnan at NZDA. Deepa is currently working on nutrition and oral health policy and both Anna and Moria are having some input into this.

Page 9: WILL CALL IT LUCK. YOU CAN CALL · The courses and content is diligently updated. It is mobile friendly and relates well ... April, as it is Easter, is Endodontic month. The speaker

Dr Logan reminded the Committee that submissions to the Dental Council on the Oral Health Therapy Consultation document close on Friday 20

th February. It was agreed that time did not allow for

consultation with the Branch for the committee to put a combined submission in so we should encourage the membership to do individual submissions. The Admin assistant is to email the Branch first thing Thursday morning reminding them. Dr Excell informed the meeting that Southern Cross are interested in holding a dental free day. This was agreed to in principle however there was concern raised over it being an appointment based day. Dr Excell will feed this concern back. Dr Logan asked the Admin Assistant to check with the Wellesley if they have a PA system for our guest speakers. Dr Logan confirmed that the date for the meeting in the Hutt Valley will be Wednesday 2

nd September. The Admin Assistant is to book

the Dowse and to see if perhaps tapas could be served instead of a dinner. Dr Logan asked Dr Excell to inquire at NZDA if consideration could be given to their Annual Conference being held here again in Wellington. Dr Logan was aware that a suitable venue had been the issue however she has been assured that both Shed 6 and the TSB arena would be suitable venues. Dr McKelvey is to advertise the NZDA Conference on the website. Next meeting Wednesday 18th March 2015

NZDA Student Observation Programme NZDA is excited to bring the Student Observation Programme to Wellington this year. The programme will take place over 5 days during the university holidays from June 29

th to July 3

rd.

The aim of this programme is “to provide final year BDS students from the University of Otago with insight into what it is like to work in private practice”. This will be achieved through observation at a different practice each day. We need your help to make this programme a valuable learning experience for those students involved. If you are interested, then you can help with one or both of the following:

*Billet a student(s) for the week in your home *Open up your practice for observation

NZDA Wellington Branch Golf

December 5th 2014 With the aid of good weather and generous sponsorship, a team of

two dozen golfers enjoyed a splendid afternoon on Royal Wellington in mint condition. Our Branch is fortunate in having the sponsorship of Henry Schein and NZ Dental Insurance at what is effectively the last Branch golf event in the country. The fact that Garth Bradford and Craig Alexander, representing the main sponsors, make the trip to play with us regularly and provide such a generous prize table is most appreciated and makes the day possible. The hospitality was completed by MAS members Kim Gross and Richard Sladden traversing the course on the refreshment cart to keep our temperatures down and sugar levels up. The names on the trophies reflect earlier days in the Dental Industry and hint at the longevity of our competition. In the hope that it can be preserved, please note that this year we will play on our usual day. The first Friday in December, the 4
