SEASON HIGHLIGHTS LOOKING BACK AT ANOTHER RECORD SETTING SEASON
individual school record. Niki
Kates (Fr.) made a huge impact
for the women earning herself 2nd
team All-Conference honors in the
100 and 200 backstroke. Also
finishing in the top 16 for the
women were Kate Harvey (Jr.),
Rachel Harvill (So.), Anna Burdine
(So.) and Jensine Rasmussen
(Fr.). The Bearcat women will be
adding 10 to their roster so look
out for an exciting season.
Other notable accomplishments
for your Bearcats include both
teams being named CSCAA
Scholastic All-American Teams
both semesters. Senior Jason
Bayang was awarded the Oregon
Play it Forward Student-Athlete
award in May and attended the
Oregon Sports Awards dinner and
presentation at the Nike World
Headquiarters
A huge thank you to Kavan
Woodcock and Jo Austin, our
strength and conditioning coaches
who joined us this season. See
you all in September!
Willamette University Swimming
had another record setting year.
Our returning swimmers picked up
right where they left off at the 2016
NWC Championship meet. The
freshmen class came in with
enthusiasm and work ethic.
Our annual Alumni meet was one
of the best we have had. Thank
you to everyone that came out to
support our program by racing or
hanging out on Saturday. We even
had a few former swimmers speak
to our current team on Friday after
practice. It is always great to
connect with Alumni during the
meet and throughout the year.
The men finished the regular
season 3-5 with wins over Pacific,
Lewis & Clark and a win over NAIA
team The College of Idaho.
The men’s team finished 6th at the
NWC Championships in Federal
Way, WA. Friday night was big
with a new 400 Medley relay
record set by Jason Bayang, Alika
Masei, Mark Yuvienco and Derek
Ludwig. The record was last set in
1992. Yuvienco (Jr.) led the men
with two new school records in the
200 Fly and 200 IM. Ludwig (Fr.)
broke the 200 IM record, formerly
held by Tim Roth, in the
consolation finals. Mark earned a
new top time for the Bearcats in
the championship finals! Also
finishing in the top 16 in their
respective events were Masei
(Sr.), Reuben White (Jr.), Bayang
(Sr.), Josh Bumgarner (Sr.),
Shelby Merrill (Sr.), Ben Hedman
(Fr.) and Colin Hakeman (Fr.).
We are looking forward to the
future with the talented group of
men we have in the program this
upcoming season.
The talent on the women’s side
has grown across the NWC,
including for your Willamette
Bearcats. The women finished the
regular season 0-8 and 7th at the
NWC Championships. Our
women’s program is looking
toward the future with more
teammates scoring at the NWC
meet than in pervious years.
The women kicked off their season
at the NWC Sprint meet where
Cassie Tallman (Jr.) finished 6th
out of 120 swimmers. The women
also set a total of 3 individual
records at the NWC meet this
year. Tallman broke her own 200
IM record, finishing third overall.
She also claimed a new 200
Breaststroke record finishing in
second place by only 0.01. Ashlyn
Witherwax (Jr.) won the
consolation final in the 100
Breaststroke claiming her first

THANK YOU
PARENTS & ALUMNI!
I want to THANK YOU, our Bearcat Family and
Alumni, for everything you have done for our
program this past season Thank you for being
at so many meets, for purchasing t-shirts and
wearing them proudly. Thank you for all of the
fabulous dinners after swim meets and for
being their mentors and for showing them what
it means to be a Bearcat.
Families, I want to thank you for supporting
your student-athletes in their choice to swim
for Willamette. I know that they are here to get
a valuable education and I appreciate you
supporting your child with their desire to
participate in swimming as well.
Alumni, I know I couldn’t do this without your
support. You are welcome back anytime to
reminisce or show the newbies how it’s done! I
look forward to your continued support of
Bearcat Swimming and we would love to see
you on September 16th for the Alumni Meet.
All the best and Go Bearcats!

SWIMMERS AWARDED AT ALL-ATHLETICS AWARDS NIGHT
On April 27th Willamette University Athletics hosted a new and improved Student-Athlete Awards Night.
Sudent-athletes, coaches and staff walked the red carpet and posed for photos as they entered the music
hall. The event honors all of the graduating seniors with a video and the traditional Pendleton blanket.
This year, a number of new awards were added to the list of honors. Cassie Tallman, Ashlyn Witherwax,
Niki Kates, Derek Ludwig and Mark Yuvienco were all nominated for individual or team awards.
Jason Bayang and Margo Coxon were each nominated and won the Student-Athlete Service Awards.
Jason has served as a coach for Marion County Special Olympics for the past four year. This past fall, he
served as the head coach. Margo has also participated with Special Olympics and has taken on a leading
role within our team and with the Office of Community Service Learning.
Alika Masei took home the top award for the male student-athletes at the event. Alika was honored as the
J.H. Booth Male Student-Athlete of the Year. It is presented to the male student-athlete who most excelled
in the areas of their career by demonstrating excellence with leadership, scholarship and athleticism. Alika
has brought so much to our program outside of his swimming and has changed us all forever. He is espe-
cially deserving of this award.
Congrats to everyone and thank you to our swimmers for supporting their teammates and WU Athletics!
