It is perhaps significant that the band New Order was founded in 1980 and

heralded a ‘new order’ for popular music in that decade. The band was formed in the aftermath of the demise of Joy Division following the suicide of Ian Curtis so signified a new start, a new order.

Bands who were huge in the 1970s began to wane. Abba broke up in 1982, Led Zeppelin ceased to exist in 1980 and Paul Weller ’s departure signalled the end for The Jam. New genres were born in the 80s including hip hop/RAP, new wave and hair metal. Some giants of the previous two decades pursued successful solo careers, stars like Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Cher, Tina Turner and Paul McCartney. The advent of MTV brought a new dimension to pop stars with image become all-important. On 1st August 1981 MTV played its first-ever video, the ironically titled Video Killed the Radio Star, by Buggles. The future of pop music had been changed forever with the videos accompanying the music just as important as the music itself.

The 80s saw the emergence of new pop superstars including Madonna, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Prince. New Wave acts were heavily featured on MTV and helped bands like Culture Club achieve success in the US as well as the UK. Acts such as Duran Duran and Blondie enjoyed major success in the UK charts both scoring two 80s no. 1 hits. Hair Metal bands, so-called because the band members sported long hair and wore make-up, included Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Van Halen.

Some of the biggest-selling hits of the 80s included the massive Do They Know Its Christmas? by Band Aid which kept Wham!’s Last Christmas off the no. 1 spot. American artists responded to the Band Aid charity single with their own release, We are the World. Frankie Goes to Hollywood achieved what no group had done since the early 1960s with their first three singles all reaching no. 1 in the UK charts. Madonna scored her first UK no. 1 hit with Into the Groove, the first of 13 UK chart-toppers, six of them in the 1980s, making her the second-biggest selling female artist of all time.

The 80s also said goodbye to some pop and rock legends including Ian Curtis, John Bonham, John Lennon and Bob Marley. Big-selling, iconic albums of the decade included Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, Thriller by Michael Jackson and The Joshua Tree by U2.

The last two years of the 80s saw diverse acts hit the top of the UK charts including Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s cheesy duet Especially for You, Sonia with You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You, Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers with Let’s Party and fittingly, the last no. 1 of the decade was Band Aid II with their version of Do They Know It’s Christmas? Some of the new genres influenced subsequent musical output and though not as exciting and defining as the 60s and 70s, the 1980s had its part to play and produced some of the best music videos ever.
