Hillary and I have always believed that education is the gateway to a better

future. Access to quality education means more opportunities for our

students, who, in turn, build a stronger community for all of us. It's an

investment that pays the highest dividends. And we are grateful to the

educators of Arkansas for embracing this responsibility and working to

ensure that our schools remain a top priority.

When I built my Presidential Center in Little Rock, I envisioned students

seeing the "Oval Office" for the first time. I also envisioned that those

students would leave with a better understanding of public service, and most

importantly, that it is a noble calling. And, who knows, maybe one of those

visiting students will go on to become the President of the United States. I

would love nothing more than to see another young man or woman from

Arkansas follow that path.

As educators, you know that your job is more than a vocation: it is also a

noble calling. I thank every one of you for answering that call. I hope you

will continue to work with the Clinton Center and utilize our resources so

that your students can take advantage of this unique educational

opportunity. Our educational staff strives to create quality curricula,

The exhibit features more than 30 of his iconic creations ^VYU�I`�SLHKPUN�HYIP[LYZ�VM�Z[`SL��MYVT�ÄYZ[�ladies to Hollywood’s brightest stars. In the 1960s, Dominican-born Oscar de la Renta moved to the United States, where he launched his signature ready-to-wear label HUK�X\PJRS`�ILJHTL�RUVÛ�HZ�H�SLHKPUN�ÄN\YL�in international fashion design. Fundamentals of Fashion (Pre-K - Second Grades)Oscar de la Renta’s vivid colors and fabrics were inspired by his time in Spain and serve as the foundation of his designs. Students will explore basic design elements such as color, texture and material, and then apply the classroom hands-on activity to the designs displayed in the Oscar de la Renta exhibit. Fashion Capitals of the World (Third - Fifth Grades)Fashion and world geography intersect as students learn about the cities that serve as fashion capitals. Students will learn about Paris, New York City, London, and Milan, and each city’s unique symbol. History, Haute Couture and Hillary Rodham Clinton (Sixth - Eighth Grades)¸/PZ[VY �̀�/H\[L�*V\[\YL��HUK�/PSSHY`�9VKOHT�*SPU[VU¹�VɈLYZ�HU�LUYPJOLK�L_WLYPLUJL�in fashion, politics and culture. And Freedom for All: The March on Washington for Jobs and FreedomAugust 10, 2013 – November 17, 2013The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place in Washington, D.C., on August 28,1963. Attended by 250,000 people, it was the largest demonstration ever seen in the nation’s capital. Photographer Stanley Tretick was assigned by LOOK magazine to cover the March from behind the scenes. Tretick captured March organizers and program speakers A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mathew Ahmann, Whitney Young, Floyd McKissick, John Lewis, Walter Reuther, Rabbi Joachim Prinz, and Eugene Carson Blake as they led the demonstration where Dr. King delivered his inspired “I Have a Dream” speech. Follow along the historic journey of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom through the powerful images of famed photojournalist Stanley Tretick as the Clinton Center commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.

Little Rock Nine and the March on Washington (Pre-K - Second Grades)A Congressional Gold Medal is the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements. Dr. King and Roy Wilkins were key players in the March on Washington who believed that we are all created equal. Arkansas-native and member of the Little Rock Nine Elizabeth Eckford participated in the March and later received a Congressional Gold Medal from President Clinton. Students will learn more about the connection between all three of these civil rights pioneers, will be able to touch a replica medal, will participate in a coloring activity, and will explore the Little Rock Nine Exhibit.

Dreamscape (Third - Fifth Grades) Dr. King’s visionary “I Have a Dream” speech was a clear and compelling call to action and is as relevant and impactful today as when he delivered it 50 years ago. This hands-on group project invites all students to watch portions of the speech and then write or draw their hope for our nation’s future on a dream cloud. Clinton and the Clarion Call: Jobs and Freedom (Sixth - Eighth Grades)President Clinton calls Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech “the greatest political speech of my lifetime” and “the clearest clarion call to a more perfect union.” Students will have the opportunity to watch this iconic speech and complete the accompanying worksheet that highlights all the dreams Dr. King had for our nation. Following the “I Have a Dream” video, students will be guided in a classroom discussion of the impact of Dr. King’s legacy and will leave with their own copy of his “I Have a Dream” speech.

Freedom for Today (Ninth - Twelfth Grades)Students will watch the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and learn about several ZPNUPÄJHU[�SLHKLYZ�VM�[OL�4HYJO�VU�>HZOPUN[VU�MVY�1VIZ�HUK�-YLLKVT�Z\JO�HZ� A. Presidential PetsJanuary 18, 2014 – April 27,2014Socks. Buddy. Barney. Bo. The Clinton Center pays tribute to presidential pets that helped make the White House a home. From snakes to chocolate labs, these famous pets provide a fun look at presidential history. This multimedia display will include artifacts from these companions in chief.

Presidential Pets (Pre-K – Second Grades)Students will learn about the beloved pets that have lived in the White House. Students will be introduced to presidential pets with a storytelling session of Dear Socks, Dear

Buddy: Kids’ Letters to the First Pets, a book written by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Spies, Traitors, and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in AmericaJanuary 18, 2014 – April 27,2014Created by the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., this exhibition dramatically illustrates the challenge of securing our nation without compromising the civil liberties upon which it was founded. Through artifacts, multimedia elements, and interactive exhibits, visitors can uncover stories of espionage, treason, and deception in the United States from 1776 to today. Visitors can discover little-known accounts of foreign agents, militias, and radicals, and learn how responses to domestic attacks OH]L�KYP]LU�JV\U[LYPU[LSSPNLUJL�TLHZ\YLZ�[OH[�JVU[PU\L�[V�HɈLJ[�V\Y�L]LY`KH`�SP]LZ��This

exhibit is designed to be viewed by families and schools although the content is most

appropriate for children ages 12 and up.)

Decoding the Message (Sixth - Eighth Grades)All is not what it seems in the world of espionage. Spies sometimes have to conceal or hide messages within other messages. The use of codes and ciphers allows messages to be transmitted safely. By making a cipher, this classroom activity provides students with a fun and challenging game of communication.

Media and Terrorism in Modern History (Ninth - Twelfth Grades)+\YPUN�H�JYPZPZ��[OL�WYLZZ\YL�VU�VɉJPHSZ�[V�WYV]PKL�HUZ^LYZ�¶�HUK�MVY�[OL�WYLZZ�[V�YLWVY[�them – is intense. It’s usually not until days, months, or sometimes years after an incident that we have a clear understanding of what transpired. The pressure to “get the word out” often leads to misinformation that can generate misperceptions and increase public fear. Students will evaluate the media coverage of a recent event and discuss its LɈLJ[�VU�W\ISPJ�WLYJLW[PVU�

ChihulyMay 2014 – January 2015The Clinton Center presents the artwork of the American artist Dale Chihuly. Born in Tacoma in 1941, Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and LSL]H[PUN�[OL�WLYJLW[PVU�VM�[OL�NSHZZ�TLKP\T�MYVT�[OL�YLHST�VM�JYHM[�[V�ÄUL�HY[��/L�PZ�renowned for his ambitious architectural installations around the world in historic cities, museums and gardens. An immersive, astounding and grandiose visual experience, this exhibition is organized by the Clinton Center in partnership with the Chihuly Studio.

Civic LiteracyCivic Literacy: The Clinton Administration (Sixth – Eighth Grades and Ninth – Twelfth Grades) Starting February 11, 2014Gathered around the long table, President Clinton, cabinet secretaries, and other VɉJPHSZ�THKL�[V\NO�JOVPJLZ�HIV\[�[OL�UH[PVU»Z�M\[\YL��0[�^HZ�PU�[OL�*HIPUL[�9VVT�[OH[�7YLZPKLU[�*SPU[VU�NH[OLYLK�ZLUPVY�VɉJPHSZ�[V�KL]LSVW�LJVUVTPJ�Z[YH[LN �̀�[V�WSHU�TPSP[HY`�missions in Kosovo, and to reform welfare. We invite students to experience these high-level negotiations through a classroom discussion that outlines the three branches of government but focuses primarily on the role of the executive branch. Most importantly, the Civic Literacy Tour will utilize the permanent exhibits such as the Cabinet Room and its interactive stations, and the Policy Alcoves to illustrate key milestones of the Clinton Administration.

Professional Development Workshops for Educators Educators will receive continuing education credit for completed professional development workshops. All workshops will last approximately two hours. Refreshments will be provided.

Fashion & DiplomacyOctober 2013 • Date and time to be announcedAmbassador Capricia Penavic Marshall, the most recent Unites States Chief of Protocol, will lead a workshop that provides a unique perspective about fashion and how it is used in diplomatic activities. As chief of protocol, Ambassador Marshall worked to advance the foreign policy goals of the Obama Administration by creating HUK�MVZ[LYPUN�HU�LU]PYVUTLU[�MVY�Z\JJLZZM\S�KPWSVTHJ �̀��:LY]PUN�HZ�[OL�ÄYZ[�OHUK�[OH[�welcomed presidents, prime ministers, ruling monarchs, and other foreign leaders to the United States, Ambassador Marshall was on the front lines of diplomatic engagement and utilized her deep knowledge of the nexus of culture and foreign policy to foster international goodwill and strengthen diplomatic relationships. This workshop is presented in conjunction with the Clinton Center’s “Oscar de la Renta: American Icon” exhibit. Following the workshop, Ambassador Marshall will lead a guided tour of this exhibit.

Arkansas Education Association and Arkansas Curriculum Conference ConferencesOctober 31, 2013In conjunction with the AEA Professional Development Conference and the ACC, the Clinton Center will host a special lecture and invite educators to attend and earn credit/hours to apply toward their annual professional development goals. In conjunction with the exhibit, “And Freedom for All: The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom,” the featured speaker will make a presentation about current civil rights issues. Following the workshop, educators are invited to participate in a guided tour of this exhibit. More details to be announced.

Civic Literacy and Presidential HistoryNovember 19, 2013The Clinton Center is a special place for your students to be immersed in presidential history. This workshop – highlighting the balanced budget, the Kosovo military negotiations, and the Welfare Reform bill of the Clinton Administration – will show you how to best utilize the Clinton Center’s Cabinet Room exhibit and other hands-on resources as an extension of your classroom. Bring your curriculum to life by connecting civic literacy and the Common Core Standards.

Chess in the SchoolsSummer 2014 • Date and time to be announced¸*OLZZ�PU�[OL�:JOVVSZ¹�PZ�H�UV[�MVY�WYVÄ[�LK\JH[PVUHS�VYNHUPaH[PVU�KLKPJH[LK�[V�stimulating and enhancing learning skills through chess. From the “Chess in the Schools” programs, children develop critical thinking skills, learn to concentrate, focus, and make decisions. Chess improves students’ self-esteem and empowers children to succeed.

The “Chess in the Schools” teacher-training program is a two-day program designed to provide teachers with the tools and skills necessary to coordinate this program in their schools. More details to be announced.

Following the workshop, students will be led on a guided tour of the permanent exhibit, Life in the White House, and the temporary exhibit, “Oscar de la Renta: American Icon.”

The Young Entrepreneur (Ninth – Twelfth Grades) November 5, 2013Oscar de la Renta is an exceptional entrepreneur. His kind of success in the business world cannot be achieved without a keen understanding of marketing and economics. “The Young Entrepreneur” will be led by a panel of successful fashion entrepreneurs who, like Oscar de la Renta, turned his or her passion from an idea into a career. This workshop will motivate future business leaders of all types by introducing them to the basics of entrepreneurship and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. More details to be announced.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State ConferenceApril 7-8, 2014Future Business Leaders of America’s mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Arkansas High School Jazz FestivalApril 25-26, 2014 • Clinton Center and ParkIn celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, this free festival is an opportunity for students to enjoy and learn more about jazz, a truly American art form. In partnership with the Arkansas Jazz Educators, the Arkansas High School Jazz Festival will feature performances by top-ranking high school jazz bands from around the state, as well as showcase the talents of professional musicians. Curbside CoutureApril 27, 2014 • Great HallHigh school students will have the opportunity to showcase and sell their own creations at “Curbside Couture,” a fashion show to be held at the Clinton Center. The three categories of designs include accessories; single ready-to-wear, which must be a garment that has been creatively redesigned or recycled; and a total design, which is H�JVTWSL[L�V\[Ä[�JYLH[P]LS`�YLKLZPNULK�VY�YLJ`JSLK��(�UV[LK�MHZOPVU�Z[`SPZ[�^PSS�ZLSLJ[�the items included in the fashion show, but all participating students are invited to sell their designs during “Curbside Couture.” Teachers of art and other subjects are asked to initiate, invite, and work with their students who wish to participate in the event. This series will include distinguished chefs, dieticians, and urban farming experts, and topics such as organic foods vs. non-organic, food labels and how to read them, and good carbs vs. bad carbs. On-site culinary demonstrations will include tips for making a healthy snack, knife skills, and the art of sautéing. More details to be announced.

Arkansas Literary FestivalApril 25-26, 2014The Arkansas Literary Festival is the premier gathering of readers and writers in Arkansas. Object-Based Learning ProgramsObject-based learning programs create an educational atmosphere in which objects become central to the lesson. These programs are designed for students in pre-K through second grade. Special objects and artifacts will be available for the students to touch and hold, providing multiple ways to connect their minds with the subject matter. Each program will include classroom activities and a tour of the exhibits and will last an hour and 15 minutes.
