William Penn

•born in London in 1644 he was the son of an English admiral, he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and become a good Anglican royalist.

•He was responsible for most of the liberty that we have in the United States of America today.

• In the late 17th century, protestants persecuted Catholics, and Catholics persecuted protestants and both persecuted Quakers and Jews William Penn made an American sanctuary which protected freedom of rights.

•For the 1st time in history a very big society offered different rights to different races and religions.

•Despite the clarity of Penn’s vision of liberty he had a blind spot about slavery, because he had slaves in America.

•Penn acquired an education in Greek and roman classics.

•He then entered oxford university which is when he emerged as a rebel.

•His rebellion got so bad that he was expelled from the school at age 17.

•Penn insisted on low taxes, A law in 1683 established a low tax on cider and liquor and a low tariff on imports and on exported hides and furs To help promote settlement Penn suspended all taxes for a year When the time came to reimpose taxes he faced fierce resistance and had to put it off.

•William Penn was known for founding Pennsylvania on march 4th 1681.

•William Penn was also known for being part of a famous group called the Quakers.

•Penn suffered a stroke in October 1712., and suffered another four months later.

•As sick as he was he never stopped doing his duty though he didn't do it for long, for he died on july 30th 1718
