WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE• Famous English poet, dramatist and actor. • Born April 23rd, 1564• Started out performing with “The Lord Chamberlain’s Men”• Major works include “Romeo & Juliet”, “Much Ado about Nothing”, “Hamlet” etc• He died on April 23,1616.

MACBETH

William Shakespeare the world famous poet and dramatist in his famous play “Macbeth” gives

us a vivid picture of the tragic end of a man named Macbeth who cherished endless wishes.

CHARACTERS • King Duncan of Scotland– Murdered by cousin Macbeth– Honest and good

• Malcolm & Donalbain– Sons of the King– Malcolm is the eldest son

• Macbeth– Duncan’s most courageous general– Ambition to become king corrupts him causing him to

murder Duncan

Entry of MACBETH AND BANQUO

• Macbeth & Banquo; the skilful & trusted commanders of King Duncan.

• Some chieftains in Duncan’s country rebelled against his rule.

• Macbeth & Banquo took charge of kings army, and marched against the rebels and defeated them.

ENTRY OF WITCHES• While Macbeth & Banquo were

returning from their victory they were suddenly stopped by three strange-looking old womens; “Three Witches”.

• The witches were simply predicting• the future of Macbeth. And the predictions were; Macbeth would become the ‘Thane of

Cawdor’. Macbeth would become the king. The sons of Banquo would become

kings.

GREATER CULPRIT; LADY MACBETH

• After hearing the predictions of witches Lady Macbeth was eagerly waiting for Macbeth.

• When Macbeth came back to the castle, it was Lady Macbeth who persuaded Macbeth to murder Duncan.

MURDER OF DUNCAN• King Duncan arrived at

Macbeth’s castle accompanied by his two sons, to honour Macbeth for his victory.

• Although Macbeth was not ready to kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth succeeded in preparing him for the cold-blooded murder of Duncan.

• The murder of King Duncan was soon forgotten, and Macbeth &his wife were crowned King & Queen of Scotland. Thus the witches’ prophecy had come true.

• As Macbeth found that he could not trust any one even his old friend, Banquo, he decided to hold a royal banquet to carry out his plans for murdering Banquo.

• After killing Banquo, Macbeth was troubled by the ghost of Banquo. He believed the witches could predict more about his future. So he decided to meet the witches again. And the predictions were;

• Macbeth was asked to beware of Macduff.• Macbeth was assured that no man born of

woman could kill him.• Macbeth would never be beaten in battle until

Birnam Wood moved to Dunsinane Castle.

DEATH OF LADY MACBETH• Lady Macbeth had started

showing the signs of sleeplessness born out of sense of remorse &sting of guilt .

• Lady Macbeth was left alone with her gloomy thoughts.

• At last, unable to bear the burden of her guilt anymore, Lady Macbeth died.

END OF MACBETH

• One of the messenger suddenly appeared before Macbeth and said that as he was keeping watch on the top of a hill, when to his amazement he saw Bernam Wood beginning to move towards Dunsinane.

• Then Macbeth understood that his end was near.

• A fierce fight followed with Macbeth & Macduff.

• Finally Macduff overcame Macbeth.

• Macbeth who had caused so much terror, was dead at last.

• Macduff cut off Macbeth’s head and presented it to young Malcom who was the lawful heir to the throne of Scotland.

• Malcom was crowned as King of Scotland.
