Arts & EntertainmentAs a tourist destination, Havre de Grace is home to a rich, vibrant arts community. The State of Maryland recognized the City as an Arts and Entertainment District in 2007. This designation offers numerous advantages for artisans and arts venues. Among the many assets visitors and residents enjoy is the Cultural Arts Center at the Opera House, located on Union Avenue in the heart of the historic downtown area. This structure, built in 1870, served as an Opera House early on in the city’s history. It has been recently renovated as a state of the art performance center featuring theater, music, film and dance. An art gallery and black box theater on the first floor provides

a location for small group programing and professional artistic displays. Visit OHHdG.org for a full schedule of events.

Havre de Grace is home to many festivals and events that showcase artistic talent, among them a seasonal First Fridays

event that attracts thousands to downtown streets closed to vehicular traffic. Bands, street performers, visual artists and others line the streets to entertain visitors dining at outdoor cafe settings. Other events include the renowned Havre de Grace Art Show and the Children’s Art Festival. Please refer to the calendar of events for more information about these and other arts related happenings.

The City is also engaged in promoting and executing a Public Art Plan, dedicated to placing various forms of art in public spaces. The initial project in this effort is the uplighting of trees lining downtown streets. Installation of programmable LED lighting makes possible creative lighting that can be choreographed in displays of rhythmically changing colors. Other projects include a Maritime Heritage sculpture as well as artist designed functional benches and murals.

Celebrate!
