May you and your pet have a safe and fun summer
• Watchoutforheatstroke:Symptomsincludepanting,lethargy,drooling,fever,vomitingandcollapse.Ifyouthinkyourdogmayhaveheatstroke,getthevetASAP—theconditioncancausepermanentorgandamage&death.Breedswithshorternoses(suchasPugs,ShihTzus,Pekingese,Bulldogs&Boxers),aswellasveryyoung&seniordogsareespeciallyvulnerable.
• GiveyourPETextrawater:Youwillneedtorefillyourpet’swaterbowlmoreoftenthanusualonveryhotdays.Offeryourpetseveralwaystocooloff.Leaveafanoninaplacewhereyourpetcansitinfrontofit,addsomeicecubestothewaterorofferacooltreat.(AKongthat’sstuffedwithwetfoodorpeanutbutter,thenfrozen,iscoolingandagreatwaytokeepyourdogentertained.)
• Neverleaveyourpetaloneinsideacar.Evenwiththewindowscracked,theinsideofacarcanheatupto120degreesinamatterofminutesonawarmday.Andleavingtheairconditioningonisnoguaranteethatyourpetwillbesafe.
• Take your walks in the morning or evening.The intense heatof midday can overwhelm your dog during a walk. Exerciseyour dog during the cooler hours and, if your dog is in thesun for an extended period of time, apply doggie sunscreen.Don’tleaveyourpetaloneoutsideformorethanshortperiodsoftime.Evenintheshade,apetexposedtoextremeheatandhumidityisatriskforheatstroke.
• Avoidhotsidewalks.Yourdog’spawscaneasilybecomeburnedonhotsurfaces,includingpavement,blacktop,&sand.
• Brushyourpet regularly.A clean,untangled coat canhelpwardoffsummerskinproblems&helpyourpetstaycool.Ifyouwanttogiveyourdogahaircut,keepthefuratleast1”inchlongtoprotecthimfromthesun.(Shavingdowntotheskinisnotrecommended.)
• Be alert for coolant leaking from your vehicle.Dogs are attractedto the sweet taste of coolant, and just a small amount canmakeyour dog sick— or even cause death. If you believe your dogmay have ingested coolant, take him to the vet right away.

HearingScreening (mandatedby state law)before school starts.
Thisyear’sscreeningforGleasonELhastentativelybeenscheduledforSeptember10,11&12.
Thisyear’s legislativesessionmadesomeheadway incorrectingtheshortfallsinschoolbudgetsbutnotnearenough.Schoolswillcontinuetodependonvolunteerstohelpintheirmanyendeavors(suchasfundraising,healthscreening,homeroomparents,mentoringandmuch,muchmore).Speakingofhomeroomparents,therewereseveralclassesthatdidnothaveoneatGleasonthispastyear.Pleaseconsidervolunteeringforthisnextyear.Youdonothavetohaveastudentintheclass;however,ifyouarenottheparent,grandparentorguardianofastudentthere,youwillneedtobecomeaCFISDGlobalVolunteer(EASY…Applyandhaveacriminalbackgroundcheck).
Ifyoudon’thavestudentsattendingaCFISDcampus,(andevenifyoudo)pleaseconsiderbecomingaCFISDGlobalVolunteer.ManyoftheeconomicallydisadvantagedschoolsdonothaveaPTO;therefore,novolunteersorfundraisingefforts.Besides,volunteeringatGleasonlast
