West Africa,1947.Thirty-three years ago, when Delta Line pioneered

regular U.S. Flag service from the Gulf to West Africa, there were few developed harbors along the entire3,000-mile coastline from Dakar to Matadi.

Each voyage was an adventure. Our ships wouldsail along the coast and anchor just beyond the surf.Cargoes were loaded onto small boats powered bymen and oars. It was a demanding test of skill andseamanship, an experience not soon forgotten by thecrews of those Delta ships.

Delta helped establish trade with the nations ofWest Africa, and continues to play a vital role in theeconomic development of the region.

Today, we serve the modern ports of West Africawith five purpose-built vessels, that sail frequentlyfrom all major U.S. Gulf ports. These great shipsare backed by an experienced team at home, and anetwork of the best agents on the African continent.

And it’s the same wherever we go in the world-South America, Central America, the Caribbean. In50 countries, on three continents, Delta is committedto service, integrity and excellence.

  • The Port of Houston Authority was awarded a certificate of merit by theLJ.S. Coast Guard during the January meeting of the Port Commission.WD. Haden, II, vice chairman of the Commission, accepted the awardfrom Capt. Ralph Barteis, captain of the port. The Port Authority receivedthe award for )ssistance and cooperation during an oil spill in January1981. The million-gallon spill resulted from a collision involving the OLYM-PIC GLORY and the LUCOR WlCKLIFFE. The collision occurred inGalveston Bay but the damaged OLYMPIC GLORY was moved into Bar-bours Cut, where more than 70 percent of the spill was contained. In addi-tion to allowing the tanker to stay in Barbours Cut, the Port Authorityassisted the Coast Guard by furnishing a command post, meeting rooms, phone lines and dock space for clean up equipment.

    60 Port of Houston Magazin,

  • Sea-Land boss predicts 5°/o growth rateA five percent average annual

growth rate over the next five years forfour of the world’s six largest and mostdeveloped oceanborne container ship-ping trades has been forecast byCharles I. Hiltzheimer, chairman andchief executive officer of Sea-Land In-dustries Investments, Inc.

"THE ASSUMPTION of slow tradegrowth in the developed trades in re-cent times is not borne out by thefacts--if anything, the opposite istrue," Hiltzheimer added. "Averagegrowth for the full 12-year period from1968 to 1980 was five percent for thefour major trades involving the U.S. Infact, the average annual growth rate ofthese four trades prior to the energycrisis, from 1968-1973, was 6.5 per-cent. For the post-energy crunchrecovery period, 1975-1980, it has beenover 9 percent."

Identifying the six largest and mostdeveloped container trade routes asthose between Asia and NorthAmerica, Europe and North America, and Europe and Asia, Hiltzheimersaid, "these six routes account foralmost half of the world volume ofcontainerizable trade. The value ofcontainer traffic that transits theseroutes is even more significant."

Focusing on the four major NorthAmerica container trades, Hiltzheimerprojected that the fastest growing overthe next five years would be the NorthAmerica/Asia trades, with growth forU.S. containerizable exports to the FarEast expected to average as much as6.5 percent between 1980 and 1986."Asia’s industry should continue itsrapid growth," he pointed out. "Since70 percent of containerizable exportsto Asia are in industrial supplies andmaterials, the benefit to trade shouldbe very direct."

PROJECTING a five percent annualgrowth rate for the world’s largest con-tainer trade route--U.S, imports fromAsia, Hiltzheimer said the link betweenU.S. gross national product (GNP) andimports is particularly good. Hecharacterized consumption goods asdominant and capital goods a strongsecond, feeding into the two segmentsof the U.S. economy where growth inthe 1980s is expected to be highest.

On the Europe/North America con-;ainer trade routes, U.S. imports fromEurope historically have been the

slowest growing of all the big, developed trades involving the U.S.,Hiltzheimer said. "Nevertheless, forthe upcoming period, the stronger U.S.dollar should be a major spur to thistrade route. The expected averagegrowth rate of five percent will only br-ing 1986 volume to about seven percentabove the peak established in 1978."

Of the big, developed trades,Hiltzheimer characterized U.S. exportsto Europe as being in the middle of amarked decline, forecasting that astrong recovery would not take placeuntil at least 1983. "This trade lane willprobably achieve the lowest averagegrowth--about two percent--between1980 and 1986."

ANY DISCUSSION of thedeveloped trades should not create the

    FMC NO. 597

impression that developing countrytrades are separate and distinct,Hiltzheimer pointed out. "Trade be-tween North America and Asia in-volves a mix of both developing anddeveloped country trade, serving as aclassic example of how moderntransport systems can efficiently servedeveloping nations."

The Sea-Land Group chief executiveofficer predicted that in the UnitedStates, the current Administration willtake a moderate approach to maritimeregulatory reform--preserving theprinciple of free, but fair trade as acornerstone for American policy. TheCongress will probably recommendmodifications, he said, but "we anx-iously await changes that should helpimprove the environment for carriersoperating in U.S. foreign commerce.

When young W. D. Haden hitched up a team of mulesand began towing vessels up the bayous above GalvestonBay, people said he was daring. Ambitious. Enterprising.

One hundred years later people still usethose same words to describe the Haden familyproducts. And Bay-Houston Towing -- nowthe largest harbor towing fleet on theGulf Coast.

Today our tug fleet services tankers, freighters, aircraft carriers, and off-shore drilling platforms. We offerexperienced, expert service. And thenewest capabilities found anywhereon the Gulf Coast.
