The following is a collection of my undergraduate work at the School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During my time studying architectural design I have become interested in the dialogue

between time and architecture. The effect that the built form has upon individuals is dependant on the time and span of its existence. Several of the following projects begin to explore the possibilities of the permanent and the

transient.

ARCH 4101 CHRIS JARRETTFALL 2010

The objective of the Center for the Bayou project is to challenge the understanding of a vehicular bridge, while satisfying the requirements of three programs - University of Houston dormitories, an art gallery and a water filtration center. The portion of the building dedicated to the gallery utilizes structural members which are an inversion of the underlying topography of the Buffalo

Bayou. The design is juxtaposed against an existing bridge providing a pedestrian right of way. The project questions the ability for the bridge to provide a similar amount of activity to that of a

city street.

The gallery space is housed by a series of steel members which span the width of the Buffalo Bayou below. Each structural member is of a unique profile, determined

by a section cut of the topography of the bayou at its location.

The South End Urban Housing project is located in a revitalized arts district of Charlotte, North Carolina. The design is focused on the relationships between public and private spaces located in and around the building. The site is bordered by a major vehicular thoroughfare, as well as a light rail corridor. Therefore, the intent is to create high density housing in a way that increases

interaction between these two methods of transportation.

ARCH 3101 MICHAEL WILLIAMSFALL 2009

The design of the Charlotte Railway Station is based on the circulation of the user. An arc runs through the center of the project and becomes tangent to the tracks at the boarding platform. The intent is to unite the individual with the train tracks similarly to the way in which two sets of tracks

come together.

Providing as an addition to the existing buildings at the US National Whitewater Center, the boathouse project functions as shelter for canoes, kayaks and sculling boats. Its design is the result of using only nominal lumber members. The structure is intended to provide shelter for the boats, while also allowing for cross-ventilation. The project is represented through modeling and

hand drawings.

The pavilion project shown below was designed as a space of meditation. The form was designed and then placed into a script,

which would randomize it, based on a set of rules.

ARCH 4050 JEREMY ROHSPRING 2010

The complex surface shown above was created by hand and modeled digitally. A single structural unit was designed and multiplied, then applied to the surface, allowing for the

possibility for the form to be constructed.

The Shadowbox project is a small scale exploration of the ways in which materials come together. The piece is constructed of concrete, padauk wood, brass, steel plate and metal wire. A pane of glass is suspended, containing an image of the work of Bojan Sarcevic, an inspiration to

the project.

An investigation of temporary built forms and the way that they affect existing spaces. The forms are a series of columns and

planes and the time span of their existence is always changing.

ARCH 4050 THOMAS FORGETSPRING 2010

The project begins to explain the significance of changes in everyday experience, as well as the role that time plays in

architecture.
