Wimberley Market DaysProblem Solutions

• Addressingo Revise current booth numbering system into a user-friendly,

easily-identifiable classification system.o Options

•Updated booth inventory attribute list

•Current photos of every booth within the market

•USGS orthophoto image (Feb 2006) with a 2 foot• resolution

Addressing SystemOverview

• Literature Review

• Consulted with Lions Club leaders after progress report to discuss various potential addressing systems

• Finalized Drafts of Addressing Systemso 3 options1. “Islands” Sections2. Large Sections3. Street-centric Sections

• No alterations to current street names

• Gaps in the numbering system allow for future booth partitioning

Addressing SystemCurrent Map

Addressing SystemISLANDS SECTIONS

• Natural boundaries

• Easily identifiable sections – 21 total

• Islands coded alphabeticallyo East to West spatial layouto P = Parking

• Numbering system independent per islando Majority of “islands” contain 10 – 40 booths per island

• Attribute Table includes street location of each booth

Page 10: Wimberley Market Days

ISLANDS SECTIONS

Page 11: Wimberley Market Days

Addressing SystemLARGE SECTIONS

• Arbitrary divisions between sectionso Gate entranceso Based on current Lions Field sections with 1 alteration

• 4 total sections with client-appropriate theme: L-I-O-No East to West spatial layout

• Numbering system independent per sectiono All sections include >100 boothso Difficult to create logical spatial arrangement

• Attribute Table includes street location of each booth

Page 12: Wimberley Market Days

LARGE SECTIONS

Page 13: Wimberley Market Days

Addressing SystemSTREET-CENTRIC SECTIONS

• Arbitrary divisions between sectionso 19 street sections

• Identified beginning & end of each streeto Streets begin nearest to gate entrance or main street

“Lion Way”

• Irregular booths: corner- and non-corner booths that face 2 streetso Identified with the most appropriate streeto Causes confusing fragmentation of “sections”

• Independent numbering systemo Odd values on the right side of streeto Even values on the left side of street

STREET-CENTRIC SECTIONS

Map Design

• Base map was created in GIS format using ESRI ArcGIS 9.2

• The main features of Lion Field were georeferenced and digitized

• Each booth will be linked to our interactive map o Display booth elementso Display photograph

• Each map was cartographically enhanced using Adobe Illustrator CS3

Page 16: Wimberley Market Days

Website Development

• Completed GeoGurus website, which includes:o All reports & presentationso Interactive Mapping Systemo Database of Booth Attributes

• Changed from SWiSH Max to Adobe Dreamweaver

• Linked to ShopMarketDays.com

Page 18: Wimberley Market Days

Database

• Completed extensive research on database management and implementation

• Used HTML coding and JavaScript applications

• Easy to query for desired booth attributes

• Embedded a sample of our database on the GeoGurus website

• Had initial meeting with the Webmaster for www.ShopMartketDays.com but were not able to further communicate and/or coordinate with her

Page 19: Wimberley Market Days

Interactive Mapping System

• Researched the ALOV Map

• Embedded an ALOV map viewer on the GeoGurus websiteo Java ‘server-side’ applicationo XML links geographic data to a web browser

• Allows non-GIS savvy users to view GIS data files and query the features’ attributes

• Potential day-vendors can now pan, zoom, and explore the booths on Lions Field before Market Day

• ALOV map viewer currently uses the original Lions Field numbering system

Page 20: Wimberley Market Days

ConclusionAddressing

• Option A, Islands Sections, is a compromise of:o Way finding, o Booth inventory management, o Flexibility for future expansion of the market.

• Pros:o Distinct natural boundaries within random layouto Hierarchical independence of each island o Modifications to booth arrangement affect few addresses

• Cons:o Many islands/sectionso Confusing to visitor

Page 21: Wimberley Market Days

ConclusionAddressing

• Option B, Large Sections, is a slight modification of the current system.

• Pros:o Creative thematic sectioning (L-I-O-N)o Visually pleasing map design

• Cons:o Difficult to number in logical arrangemento Beginning and ending numbering break spatial continuity of

boothso Difficult to renumber booths in future

Page 22: Wimberley Market Days

ConclusionAddressing

• Option C, Street-Centric, based on a classic street numbering system.

• Pros:o Familiarity of systemo Most street sections have reasonable number of booths

• Cons:o Irregular cornerso Booths facing two or more streetso Fragmented irregular sectionso Difficult to restructure in future

Page 23: Wimberley Market Days

ConclusionDay Rental Procedures

• Created an extensive database that allows day-vendors to query for booths with desired attributes.o Helps day renters identify most preferred booths

• Identified affordable software to create an interactive mapping system that aids in day-vendor processing.o Helps day renters locate preferred booths before arrivalo Gives day renters visual of booth

Page 24: Wimberley Market Days

ConclusionFuture

•Lions Club can now discuss, critique or modify the addressing system options to best suit their management, vendor and visitor needs.

oEstablishing an addressing system will ease a future survey of booth boundaries.

•Two systems can be easily implemented on the ShopMarketDays.com web-site to assist potential day renters.
