Alan Little M.B.E., 1928–2017This year’s Wimbledon Compendium is slightly different from usual.

Alan Little, the man who created this book and diligently updated it for 27years, sadly died in October last year, at the age of 89.

James Alan Little was born on 1 February 1928 in Greenwich, South EastLondon. In 1946, after listening to the Gentlemen’s Singles final on theradio, Alan decided to come to Wimbledon himself the next day, to watchthe Ladies’ final between Pauline Betz and Louise Brough. Thus began alifelong love affair between Alan and Wimbledon. He missed the 1947Championships whilst on National Service but returned the following yearfor his first of 70 consecutive Championships.

Alan had a ‘real’ job working for British Telecom (BT) but his real passionin life was tennis. From a young age, he loved to collect tennis books andmagazines and to study the history of the game. One of his earliestcontributions to tennis literature was when he wrote a letter to the editor ofLawn Tennis and Badminton magazine, pointing out an error in an article byLance Tingay, one of the pre-eminent tennis writers of the time. This wastypical Alan. Accuracy and attention to detail were the foundations ofeverything he did.

By 1960 Alan had become a regular contributor to Lawn Tennis andBadminton and was already described in the magazine as ‘a keen British lawntennis historical authority.’ In 1967, when Lawn Tennis and Badmintonbecame Tennis Pictorial International, Alan was Assistant Editor. Hecontinued in this role when Tennis Pictorial International was succeeded byTennis World in 1969 and, later that year, Alan became editor, a job hecontinued to do until 1976. By this time, he had been tasked with settingup a library in the new Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum. Nevertheless, he

continued his association with Tennis World, in the capacity of ConsultingEditor, until 1981.

When The All England Lawn Tennis Club decided to build a Museumand Library, Alan was the obvious choice to run the Library. After all, it hadbeen his idea in the first place. In his March 1967 column in Lawn Tennis andBadminton, Alan proposed that a National Museum and Library of LawnTennis be built on land recently acquired by the Club: ‘The library sectionwould probably be of more material value to the tennis lover,’ he wrote.‘Believe me, information on the Game’s history is hard to come by’.

The Kenneth Ritchie Wimbledon Library (named after Lord Ritchie ofDundee, a long-standing Club Committee member) eventually opened in1977 and, over the course of the next 40 years, Alan built it into the mostcomprehensive tennis library in the world. The Library now holds more than6,000 books, as well as thousands more magazines, programmes, newspapercuttings and miscellaneous publications from all over the world. Currently, there are 90 different countries represented in the collection. Alan wasparticularly proud of the Library’s magazine collection and he had a specialtalent for tracking down rare sets of magazines and persuading their ownersto donate them to the Library.

Initially, Alan combined his role of Honorary Librarian with his full-timejob at BT. However, in 1983 he took early retirement and was now free toconcentrate on his passion for tennis. By the 1990s he had settled into theweekly pattern that he maintained for the rest of his life. He would attendthe Library every Tuesday and Thursday, almost without fail, except duringThe Championships when he would be here every day. His time in theLibrary would be spent working on The Compendium, as well as his manyother books, and answering enquiries from fellow tennis researchers. Overthe years, Alan helped countless people and made many friends from all overthe world, all of whom revered Alan for the quality of his research. Hehimself enjoyed nothing more than being able to help anyone who shared histhirst for tennis knowledge.

As well as helping others with their research, Alan wrote many books ofhis own. His first publication was The Changing Face of Wimbledon 1877-1977, one of a set of booklets published to mark the centenary of TheChampionships. This publication was the forerunner of a popular ‘trilogy’ ofbooklets, first published in 2002, that describe the evolution of the Club andits Grounds: Wimbledon 1869-1921: The Changing Face of Worple Road,Wimbledon 1922: The New Ground and Centre Court, and Wimbledon 1922-2002: The Changing Face of Church Road. The latter was updated severaltimes, most recently in 2014.

In 1980 he edited Know Your Wimbledon, a booklet that was sold alongsidethe Official Programme. The following year, the booklet was relaunched asThis is Wimbledon and Alan continued to edit it every year until 2013. Hewas also responsible for compiling the first Lawn Tennis ChampionshipsMedia Guide, a task he continued to do until 1990.

  • 12 WIMBLEDON COMPENDIUM 2018

Between 1983 and 1985 Alan wrote a series of booklets on earlyWimbledon Champions Lottie Dodd, Maud Watson, Kathleen Godfree,May Sutton, Dorothea Chambers and Lena Rice, as well as one telling thestory of Vere St. Leger Goold, the 1879 All Comers’ Runner-up, who waslater convicted of murder. The book was drily entitled, A Tale of Two Courts,a title Alan often expressed great amusement in having thought up.

Alan’s first book was published in 1984. Wimbledon Ladies: A CentenaryRecord 1884-1984 – The Singles Champions was co-written with Lance Tingay. This was followed two years later by Wimbledon Men: A HundredChampionships 1877-1987 – The Singles Champions, also written with Tingay, who produced essays on each Champion whilst Alan provided the statisticson their playing records and career achievements. Both books were updatedfour times, most recently in 2015, with John Barrett continuing Tingay’swork as co-author.

Alan’s first solo book was published in 1988. Suzanne Lenglen – Tennis Idolof the Twenties told the story of one of Alan’s all-time favourite players, thesix-time Wimbledon singles Champion whom he described as doing ‘muchto popularise the game as it is today’. A much-expanded version of this bookwas published in 2007 and listed the results of nearly every match played byLenglen during her career.

Another of Alan’s areas of interest was reflected in his next book, Tennisand the Olympic Games, which reviewed every Olympic tennis tournamentfrom Athens 1896 through to Beijing 2008, complete with results of everysingle match in Olympic history. After the London 2012 Games, Alanbrought the Olympic tennis story up to date by publishing a booklet, TheOlympic Tennis Event at Wimbledon 2012, which told the story of AndyMurray’s historic victory for Great Britain.

Alan’s final book was, apart from the Wimbledon Compendium, his biggestproject of all. The Golden Days of Tennis on the French Riviera 1874-1939 waspublished in 2014 and told the story of the French Riviera tennis scene, which had its heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was a subject which fascinated Alan and, although he insisted he had noplans for a sequel, he continued to research the subject, just for fun, untilshortly before he died.

However, the publication Alan was most proud of was this book, theWimbledon Compendium. First published in 1991, it consisted of a relativelymodest 224 pages. For the next 27 years, Alan would update the book withmeticulous attention to detail, regularly adding new categories ofinformation. He did wonder occasionally if he’d gone too far: ‘I’ve created amonster!’, he once exclaimed, when faced with the task of updating one ofthe more complicated sections. But, most of the time, Alan was never morecontent than when sitting in the Library on a Tuesday or Thursday, updatinghis Compendium.

Although Alan liked his expertise to be appreciated, he never wanted tobe the centre of attention and never sought recognition for the work he did.

  • ALAN LITTLE M.B.E., 1928–2017 13

For him, being able to do something he loved was reward in itself.Nevertheless, Alan deservedly received many awards for his uniquecontribution to tennis, including an M.B.E. in 2014, the Lawn TennisWriters Association’s Annual Award in 2008 and the All England Club’sDistinguished Service Award in 2016. As part of the latter, the Clubcommissioned a portrait of Alan, which now hangs in his beloved Library.Being a modest man, he didn’t feel entirely comfortable having his portraitpainted, but he went along with it graciously as he appreciated thesentiment behind it.

Perhaps the honour Alan was most proud of was being made an HonoraryMember of The All England Lawn Tennis Club in 1985. As he once said tome, ‘the only way to become an Honorary Member is to win Wimbledon orstart a Library!’

For a man of 89 years, Alan was still incredibly sprightly. In fact, it washard to keep up with him sometimes. Those of us who worked with himwere in awe of his energy and enthusiasm. He was a force of nature and wethought he would go on forever. Sadly, however, he became unwell shortlyafter the end of The Championships 2017 and passed away on 11 October.

To say that Alan is missed is an understatement. His knowledge ofWimbledon and tennis history was encyclopaedic and his loss leaves a voidthat simply cannot be filled. He is greatly missed by his colleagues here atthe Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, by the fellow Members he had lunchwith in the Clubhouse every Tuesday and Thursday and by his friends fromall over the tennis world, many of whom he would catch up with every yearat The Championships.

Nevertheless, Alan has left us with much to be grateful for. In his Libraryand his many publications, he has left an extraordinary legacy. He has alsoenriched the lives of tennis lovers all over the world. I only knew Alan foraround 18 months but he made more of an impact on me than almost anyoneI’ve ever known. He was a mentor, an inspiration and a friend to me and Iknow many other people felt the same way about him.

Perhaps nothing encapsulates Alan’s legacy more than this very book, theWimbledon Compendium. Thanks to this book, and to Alan, we know so muchmore about Wimbledon than we otherwise would. Alan was hugely proud ofthe Compendium and was absolutely devoted to the work of updating itevery year. Indeed, he continued to work on this edition until shortly beforehe died. I had great fun assisting Alan with the Compendium over the pastcouple of years and it’s been my great privilege to help him finish this one.No doubt he’ll find a way to let me know if he spots any mistakes!
