Page 3: Wimbledon Project

I decided to work on the main ticket hall at Wimbledon station because I feel since it is a place where people meet and wait for trains it needed to be revived from its bland and unappealing state so people enjoy because there and not just tolerate it because they have no choice. Wimbledon station is not owned by the rail company but is rented so this might be why they have not done anything to update and regenerate the station like other stations in London have done.

On my visits I realized that the space is used mainly as a transition but also a waiting area and a meeting place. Through my sensory journey I found the ticket hall cold, uninviting and visually depriving; this is what I wanted to change with my design. I want to modernize the space but not simply redecorating but by inviting people to explore and enjoy their surroundings.

I firstly looked at making the space feel warmer and more inviting by using warm colours through out the space, this also brightened up the whole appearance of the ticket hall and give a more modern and clean look. The main focus of my design is the interactive liquid floor tiles where when walked on the tiles change colour and create patterns so this adds a sense of play while also engaging people in the interactive aspect of the design. Even if you are in a rush you can still get the experience of walking over the tiles and seeing them change underneath your feet.

Going with the modern theme there is also a mirrored ceiling where it reflects the different patterns people make as they walk across and it also opens up the space, the use of the mirror is not only to reflect the tiles but also the people in the station giving people something to look at rather than a plain ceiling. I have also used carpet for the rest of the floor, giving people are more comfortable experience to walk and stand on. The transition from the wool carpet to the squiggly tiles gives more textures and feeling for the user and also distinguishes the importance of the main focus – the tiles. I think my design adds allot to the stations appearance and could also be a talking point for many people.

Key Construction Specifications -

The mirrored tiles I will use already have an adisive on the back but for extra surport I will use these bolt screws at each corner of the tiles.

The tiles come with adhesive on the back so I would simply have to lay the tiles down on the floor in the position I want them in. Carpet will have to be laid after the liquid tiles

because the tiles cannot be stuck onto the carpet and it will be easier to place once the tiles are down.
