I may be changing my mind about the month of October. As I’ve admitted before in this column, October is not my favorite month even though I was married in October and my two daughters and one granddaughter were born this month. I’m not a fan of trick or treating and masking up while wearing ridiculous costumes around October 31, Halloween. And I might add, after this past year, who needs another reason to wear a mask? So, why am I maybe changing my mind about October? First reason, October 1, has been designated International Day of Older Persons and my husband and I both qualify. We don’t mind this designation as it grants us privileges that young whippersnapper don’t have. Senior discounts for dining are my favorite along with being retired and able to schedule my naps around or during my afternoon TV viewing. In the 1920s, 55 was considered old so in today’s world, I have had twenty years to prepare myself for being older than dirt. That brings me to my second reason for perhaps changing my mind about October. As a plus sized gal, I was elated to find out that October 6 is National Plus Size Appreciation Day and this includes plus sized guys. I’m so lucky that my husband has always appreciated me whether skinny, chunky, or anything in between. One size is no longer the norm so we plus size people need a day like October 6 to adjust our attitudes and cheerfully embrace our body shapes as reflected in the mirror. Although I feel lucky in my choice of husbands, my luck gambling wise needs a boost so here’s a few things I’m going to try. I will catch a falling leaf on the first day of autumn to summon my good luck. Oops, the first day of autumn was September 22 and since I missed my chance last month, I will have to skip that one. Next on my list, have a cup of tea, but I must put the sugar in the cup first. Oops, I hate tea and never drink it. Scratch that good luck omen also. All right, this last one I can definitely handle. I will put a dress on inside out then wear it around town. Since I’ve been known to put my pants on backwards and wear them like that until I try to stick my hands in my front pockets and find them on my rump, this one could definitely work for me. When I do this accidentally, my loving husband finds it hilarious not to inform me; but me, not so much. Feel free to contact me at homemailbox@ roadrunner.com if you see me at Bingo or anywhere else wearing an inside-out dress. It may, or may not be, an accident.

United Kingdom. A Wishaw pensioner recently became the second lucky player to scoop a £50,000 ($68,400 USD) jackpot in the space of ten weeks. The 78-year-old grandmother, who shunned publicity in a bid to remain anonymous, is a regular at Buzz Bingo in Motherwell. Generously, and as the unwritten Bingo pact rule dictates, she plans to split the winnings evenly with her regular Bingo buddy. The delighted winner has been enjoying playing Bingo at the venue along with her friend for decades and plans to spend her half spoiling her children and grandchildren, and herself. She said: “This is the perfect time in life for spoiling yourself.” The big win came in early August, at the popular Bingo hall on Orbiston Street. It followed hot on the heels of another lucky local who called Bingo for the same amount says Angela McPhee, club manager at Buzz Bingo Motherwell. Now you know where to play in the U.K. folks!

Las Vegas. Two double progressive Bingo players hit the jackpot to win a combined sum of $115,992 at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur and Arizona Charlie’s Boulder in late summer. One lucky local won $68,342 at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur on July 31, while the other player, Henry, won $47,650 at Arizona Charlie’s Boulder on Aug. 3. Players are invited to sign up for True Rewards, Golden Entertainment’s rewards program, to receive bonuses including increased point multipliers, prizes such as cash and free slot play, as well as eligibility in select tournaments and special events. More information is available at the True Rewards center at either location or on the websites

Western New York. The word “Bingo” was seldom heard during the COVID pandemic, but across Western New York more games are coming back, carrying more meaning than you might expect. “Since COVID It’s been a little weird but now we’re doing it the first two Friday nights of the month,” said Bob O’Connor from the Lockport Dale Association. The games are a gathering place for people who haven’t seen each other in person over the past year. “Honestly, it’s a social event for the people that come…they’re having fun and seeing their old friends,” O’Connor said. Diane Zielinski drove from Cheektowaga on a recent Friday night to play Bingo in Lockport with her daughter and sister, Mary Schultz, with the hope of winning and reconnecting. “It’s just great to be together, it is,” Schultz said. Zielinski added, “As long as we’re together, we’re family that’s all that counts.”

Missouri. Traditional Bingo recently turned into a fashionable event when Coldwell Banker Hulsey hosted its third annual Designer Bag Bingo event at Twin Oaks Vineyard & Winery in Farmington. It can be hard to get a seat at this popular fundraising event where participants hope to win a name-brand purse, including Coach, Michael Kors, Kate Space, Dooney & Bourke and more, during fifteen rounds of fun. Coldwell Banker Hulsey’s first Designer Bag Bingo event in 2018 raised more than $10,000. The next year, the group raised more than $17,000. Both amounts went to the Walker Johns Childhood Cancer Foundation. This year’s Designer Bag Bingo event raised $22,933 for Play It Forward, the soon-to-be all-inclusive playground to be built in Farmington.

Horoscopes for October 2021ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20): The full moon on the 20th is one for the record books. You’re at a crossroads and you must decide where your priorities lie. Don’t dilute your personal truth for the sake of keeping the peace with those around you. There’s a reason for the tension you feel in your relationships and it’s directly related to becoming your most authentic self. Lucky Days: 1 - 23Lucky Numbers: 9 - 15

TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21): Finally there’s some peace, allowing you to relax and reconnect with the core principles that drive your life. The full moon on the 20th reveals a compelling urge to travel or perhaps even change domestic location entirely. The various disruptions that have jostled your life this year have a purpose, the meaning of which will be crystal clear next spring. Lucky Days: 6 - 29Lucky Numbers: 2 - 21

GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21): You could say you’ve made leaps and bounds this year in the maturity department. I don’t mean as in getting older, but certainly your quota of wisdom has increased. Why not apply this new mental discipline to a secret project that you’ve been wanting to do. Don’t let fuzzy focus impede your crystal-clear vision of the world around you. Lucky Days: 7 - 20Lucky Numbers: 19 - 44

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 22): The full moon on the 20th puts pressure on a project that you’ve hesitated to complete. Perhaps you’ve lost your objectivity or nerve. Or maybe you’re just feeling shy. Consider asking for the advice or guidance from a trusted colleague or ally. See if their feedback can spur you forward by reminding you of how talented you really are. Lucky Days: 13 - 19Lucky Numbers: 2 - 5

LEO (JUL 23-AUG 23): You are toggling back and forth between wild enthusiasm and fearful doubt. Riding a seesaw like that can be exhausting, but there’s a reason for the mood swings. You’re trying to find the sweet spot or center point that will allow heightened inspiration and down-to-earth practicality to bloom naturally. Trust in this cosmic adjustment. Lucky Days: 17 - 23Lucky Numbers: 3 - 15

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23): Laughter is liberating because it brings opposite views together and shows you a new direction forward. You have a quick mind that uses humor to defuse the most challenging predicaments. And now is the time to demonstrate this skill. The full moon on the 20th reminds you to revisit a friendship or partnership that you’d considered long lost in the past. Lucky Days: 9 - 23Lucky Numbers: 7 - 29

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23): The full moon on the 20th throws a bright light on the highs and lows within your relational world. What you discover might be disturbing at first, but now is the time to make some honest appraisals. The people you decide to keep in your life will help you grow in new directions. The unions you end will save you from wasted time and efforts. Accept the changes gracefully.Lucky Days: 19 - 22Lucky Numbers: 7- 13

SCORPIO (OCT 24th-NOV 22nd): Dreams play an important role during the remainder of the year. Be receptive to signals, hints and intimations that come to you from unlikely places. The full moon on the 20th shifts your attention to self-care. Reconsider the effect of nutrition and exercise on your overall state of mind. The theme is preventative care and doing what will best insure your health into the future. Lucky Days: 21 - 26Lucky Numbers: 10 - 28

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23rd-DEC 21st): Venus in your sign has a magnetic effect on your already well-stocked supply of charm. You’ll feel the impulse to shine and draw attention to yourself, especially your urge to

merge. Set your sights on new romantic possibilities. This is your month to shine. The full moon on the 20th reconnects you with a forgotten friendship from childhood days.Lucky Days: 5 - 12Lucky Numbers: 1 - 25

CAPRICORN (DEC 22nd-JAN 20th): October is the perfect month to harness your mental powers and put them to work on a new creative project. The full moon on the 20th exposes a tension between domestic and vocational life. See if you can strike a happy medium and apply your mental skills to both areas of your life. A new start in the looming new year requires careful planning at home and at work. Lucky Days: 9 - 30Lucky Numbers: 7 - 27

AQUARIUS (JAN 21st-FEB 19th): Help is around the corner as Jupiter, the planet of good luck, rallies extra magic to help manifest items on your wish list. The more certain you are of what, exactly, you need, the quicker you’ll align with your incoming blessings. The full moon on the 20th brings a change of mind or heart that will surprise those closest to you. Lucky Days: 6 - 16Lucky Numbers: 2 - 3

PISCES (FEB 20th-MAR 20th): Tantra is an Eastern spiritual practice that channels the libido into aspects of life not related to procreation. What does this have to do with you? Well, October is all about redirecting the power of your desires in unexpected ways. Find a way rearrange the ways you acquire what you want in life by moving your passion forward through new channels and methods. Lucky Days: 17 - 19Lucky Numbers: 25 - 41

VA Grants to Help Homeless Veterans More than 260 non-profit community programs across the country received portions of $418 million in grants for the Support Services for Veteran Families program. Last year alone the Department of Veterans Affairs served 77,590 veterans and their 19,919 children in the program.

The SSVF program runs in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, District of Columbia and Guam. Its main focus is homelessness and getting veterans and their families into permanent housing. The SSVF partners with community programs with all manner of help: case management, VA benefits, health care, child care, daily living services, legal assistance, transportation, financial planning,

counseling and much more. In some cases, there are time-limited payments to landlords, utilities and moving companies if that helps a veteran and family to stay in or get to permanent housing.

To learn more about the SSVF program, go online to www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf. You also can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AIDVET (1-877-424-3838).

The best website is www.va.gov/homeless, where you can click on Community Resource and Referral Centers (CRRCs). That page also has a chat link. If you’re in crisis, call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1. Additionally, you can call your closest VA medical center. If you have no other options (no phone, no internet, are homeless or are at imminent risk for it), just go. Just show up at the medical center. If you are not yet homeless, contact them in advance, due to COVID restrictions.

One thing to keep in mind: These grants given to community programs are not bottomless buckets. Funding can and does run out, and there isn’t more until the next disbursement. If you need help, apply now. Make your calls, get put on lists

Paws CornerQ: My daughter received a

goldfish for her last birthday, and true to her word, she has kept the fish healthy and happy. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? — Judy G., Seattle

A: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention — if not actively trying to get a paw into the water.

Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this

successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat.

Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too — but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds.

Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do. But you also have the opportunity to guide your daughter and have her be part of the decision as to whether a kitten is a good idea at this point, or whether she should wait another year.

Finding a PatternDear Guy,

I’m fairly new to Bingo and get a little confused sometimes when they keep introducing new card patterns (a tree, a turtle, a pyramid, etc., etc., etc.). Is there someplace I can get a book with all these patterns in it? — Joseph, California

Dear Joseph,If you’re playing Bingo at a hall

with a caller console, the caller should flash a picture of the pattern before the game begins so that everyone knows the pattern being played. Of course, there are probably many older models out there that may not include this feature.

Luckily, there is always the Internet. Two web sites I found—bingojourney.com/bingo-patterns.htm and nationwidebingo.com/patterns.cfm—provide dozens of popular Bingo patterns organized alphabetically. (There are some listed that I’ve never heard of. Has anyone out there ever played “Field Goal?”) Just print out the page and take it with you the next time you head to Bingo.

If you need something different from the two examples I’ve provided, simply go to Google and search under “Bingo Card Patterns” for plenty of alternatives. — Guy

Hey guys! (And gals!) Write to Guy’s Turn c/o The Bingo Bugle, P.O. Box 527, Vashon, WA 98070, or e-mail Guy directly at [email protected].

Finding the Best Blood Pressure Monitor for YouDear Savvy Senior,

I just found out I have stage 1 hypertension and my doctor recommended I get a home blood pressure monitor to keep an eye on it. Can you offer me any tips on choosing a good one? — Hypertensive Helen

Dear Helen,It’s a smart idea! Everyone

with elevated or high blood pressure (stage 1 and higher) should consider getting a home blood pressure monitor. Home monitoring can help you keep tabs on your blood pressure in a comfortable setting. Plus, if you’re taking medication it will make certain it’s working, and alert you to a health problem if it arises. Here are some tips to help you choose a good monitor.

Types of MonitorsThe two most popular types of

home blood pressure monitors sold today are automatic arm monitors, and automatic wrist monitors that are electric and/or battery powered.

With an automatic arm monitor, you simply wrap the cuff around your bicep and with the push of one button the cuff inflates and deflates automatically giving you your blood pressure reading on the display window in a matter of seconds.

Wrist monitors work similarly, except they attach to the wrist. Wrist monitors are also smaller in weight and size, which makes

them more portable, and a bit more comfortable to use than the arm monitors, but they tend to be a little less accurate. To help you choose the best monitor for you, here are several things to check into:

Make sure it fits: Be sure the cuff fits the circumference of your upper arm. Using a cuff that’s the wrong size can result in an inaccurate reading. Most arm models have two sizes or an adjustable cuff that fits most people. Wrist models also fit most people.

Choose one that’s easy to use: Be sure the display on the monitor is easy to read, and that the buttons are large. The directions for applying the cuff and operating the monitor should be clear.

Consider what extra features you want: Many automatic monitors come with additional features such as irregular heartbeat detection that checks for arrhythmias and other abnormalities; a risk category indicator that tells you whether your blood pressure is in the high range; a data-averaging function that allows you to take multiple readings and get an overall average; multiple user memory that allows two or more users to save their readings; and downloadable memory that lets you transmit your data to your computer or smartphone.

Where to BuyYou can find blood pressure

monitors at pharmacies, medical supply stores or online, and you don’t need a prescription to buy one. Prices typically range between $40 and $100.

In most cases, original Medicare will not cover a home blood pressure monitor, but if you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a private health insurance policy it’s worth checking into, because some plans may provide coverage.

The best automatic arm monitors as recommended by

Consumer Reports include the Omron Platinum BP5450 ($75), Omron Silver BP5250 ($50) and the Omron 10 Series BP7450 ($100); A&D Medical UA767F ($45); and Rite Aid Deluxe Automatic BP3AR1-4DRITE ($37). And the top wrist monitors are the Omron 7 Series BP6350 ($80); and the Equate (Walmart) 4500 Series ($40).

After you buy a monitor, it’s a good idea to take it to your doctor’s office so they can check its accuracy and teach you the proper techniques of how and when to use it.

You can also get more detailed information on how to accurately measure your blood pressure at home at Heart.org/HBP – click on “Learn How to Monitor Your Blood Pressure at Home.”

Save Money With Phone Plans, Price MatchingWith the price of everything going up, we need to save our dollars every place we can. Here are two ideas:

PHONE PLANS — If you want to save money on your cellphone plan or the cost of a new phone, there are a dozen or so providers that offer reduced-rate plans for seniors. Some offer a new phone, some will let you use your existing phone and many will let you keep your current phone number. Most offer unlimited talk and text, but prices will vary based on download speeds and data caps. Most also don’t require a contract, but if part of the deal is to buy a new phone from them, you might run into a penalty if you cancel before the phone is paid for.

Call around to the phone service providers in your area and ask about senior plans. Be sure to look at their websites to check out the phones. You might need larger buttons or other special features. Better yet, if they have a store near you, go look at the phones in person. Don’t let yourself be talked into a long contract that you don’t want.

PRICE MATCHING — This is a good way to get deals on things you want if you hunt for bargains. Some stores make it their policy to match lower prices found elsewhere. You’ll need to have proof, however, meaning they’ll need to see the current price on the competitor’s website. Your best bet is to call and ask whether they’ll look online right from their store, or if it’s enough for you to print out the competitor’s online ad. It’s mostly the bigger chains that have these policies, but even a local store might be willing to price match just to get your business.

Remember to ask for your senior discount everywhere you go!

Spreading JoyDear Aunt Bingo,

I love when Bingo players show excitement when they win. At the same time, I find it disturbing when someone wins a large jackpot and acts like it is no big deal.

Here are two contrasting examples that occurred during the same Bingo session:

A gentleman won a pick-8 in 19 numbers for $10,000 and showed not one bit of emotion or excitement—even after being handed the check for $10,000.

A short time later, a lady won a regular Bingo for $100 and was shaking so badly she could barely sign her name on the winning form. She was so excited about winning $100 that people around her heard her say out loud, “I

think I’m gonna pee my pants!”When the Bingo session ended,

this lady was still smiling from ear to ear over winning $100, while the gentleman who won $10,000 nonchalantly walked to his car. —Jim M., Portland, Oregon

Dear Jim,It’s rarely possible to predict

human behavior—especially when it comes to showing emotion. One person might express their joy by jumping up and down and screaming uncontrollably. Another might consider such a display vulgar and, while they may be jumping up and down and screaming uncontrollably on the inside, on the outside they give the impression that they couldn’t care less.

I’m pretty confident that this is exactly what was going on with your $10,000 winner. How could anyone not be excited about so substantial a win? But he chose to play it cool—because that’s how he was taught to behave, or perhaps because he simply didn’t want to rub it in the faces of all the players who didn’t win.

Then there is your $100 winner, bless her. Clearly, she is not the sort of person who can or has ever been able to hold it in (we all certainly hope that for her pants’ sakes she was able to, LOL!). This lady obviously wears her emotions on her sleeve for everyone to see. If she didn’t, she’d probably explode.

Like you, I would much rather see a person express their

happiness outwardly and not keep it bottled up. Joy is contagious, and we could all use more of it. Spread it around! — Aunt Bingo

Now Here’s a Tip:• If you keep a couple of crackers in your sugar jar, they’ll keep the sugar from caking.

• Cucumber is a speedy diuretic. Try snacking on slices for a cool treat. Or deseed slices and slip a few in your glass of cold water.

• “When we go to the doctor with our youngest, we bring a few crayons. She’ll lie down on the exam table paper, and we draw her outline. Then she can fill in her face and other details. This usually calms her while she is waiting. The doctor even has used the outline to talk about her body to her.” — E.S. in Georgia

• “In older houses, you might have a problem with cracking drywall

when trying to hang pictures. You can solve this by placing a bit of clear tape over the spot where you’re going to drive a nail. It goes right in. If you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking. It does the same thing, keeping the wood from splitting.” — P.K. in New Jersey

• To prevent garbage cans from filling with water during rainstorms, drill several holes in the bottom, near the sides. This also will help bags to come out of the can easier.

If you’ve read the stories about lottery curse victims, you might worry that buying a lottery ticket isn’t worth it. Who wants to risk winning a Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot when there is a chance that your windfall will end in ruin? Fortunately, while there are many people who don’t know how to handle a sudden windfall, there are even more lottery winners who use their winnings to make a positive difference in their lives and their communities. Here are more success stories.

Mega Millions Winners Honor Parents With Park When John and Linda Kutey’s office lottery pool won one of Mega Millions’ biggest jackpots, the Kuteys knew that they wanted to pay respect to their parents by doing something for their community. So they went to the Green Island village hall and asked how they could help. The answer was to help renovate a local park, replacing an older wading pool with a modern spray park. The spray park gives local children a place to cool off in the summer, and it didn’t cost the taxpayers a cent. The Kuteys not only donated the new equipment but also everything needed to install it. The Kuteys were also able to make some personal improvements with the lottery money. John Kutey was able to leave his job and he and his wife moved to a beautiful house in Florida.

Florida Lottery Winner Leaves a Legacy of Good WorksSheelah Ryan won $52 million in the Florida State Lottery, which at the time was the biggest individual lottery jackpot ever won. She then spent the last years of her life giving it away. As many lottery winners have said, she felt that she had won the money for a reason, and that reason was to help others. She created a charitable group to help

organizations that provide aid for the underprivileged. Ryan only had six years to enjoy her winnings before dying of cancer, but The Ryan Foundation outlasted her, continuing to give grants to organizations that built low-cost housing, helped children who in need of operations they couldn’t afford, and aided senior citizens, especially in her home of Seminole County, Florida.

Man Donates Lottery Jackpot to Fight DiseaseMost people who win the lottery make plans to quit their job, travel the world, or buy a new house or car. But when Tom Crist won $40 million in a Canadian lottery, he had a very different idea. He donated every single dollar to fight the disease that killed his wife. Two years earlier, Tom had lost his wife of 44 years, Jan, to cancer. He was retired, had money saved up, and his adult children were doing well, so he decided not to keep any of it for himself at all. With the full approval of his kids, he donated the entire lump sum to a cancer charity in Calgary.

School Teacher Uses Jackpot to Bring Joy to ChildrenLes Robins was a high school teacher who thought it was a shame that kids today don’t grow up doing the kinds of activities he himself had enjoyed as a child: going to camp, swimming, playing sports, and exploring the outdoors. So when he won a $111 million Powerball jackpot, Robins decided to use the funds to create his own camp to bring joy to kids. Robins founded Camp Winnegator on 226 acres that he bought with his lottery money, and it operated for over a decade. It provided children a low-cost place to go in the summer where they could horseback ride, craft, swim, and play on the lake. Best of all, the kids had a chance to disconnect from video games and cell phones and get in touch with nature and their real-life friends.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is taking hemp-based CBD oil for depression. He purchased this at a health food store. His doctor prescribed pills that he was unable to tolerate due to suicidal thoughts. He is unable to go outside when taking CBD. We would like to know if it will show up in a drug test as part of a job interview. Should he be taking it? — D.

ANSWER: There are animal studies and some preliminary data suggesting that cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive substance found in cannabis, might be effective for anxiety and depressive disorders. I hope that CBD will be proven to be a useful treatment for depression, as what we have now certainly isn’t perfect. However, there are not yet high-quality studies supporting this use. The fact that your son can’t go out while taking the CBD suggests to me that it may not be effective. While the pills he had previously cannot be used, there are many treatments available for depression that have

better safety and effectiveness data than CBD.

Most forensic drug testing uses THC and its metabolites, so if what your son is taking is truly CBD, then it should not be identified during testing as THC. There is a chance that the “CBD oil” he purchased has THC in it: In one study, 57% of CBD oils sold were found to have measurable THC, which would show up on a drug test. Unfortunately, 25% of the oils contained no CBD at all.

I remain convinced that these drugs, THC and CBD, need to be properly studied, and when found to be useful, tested for purity and content in the same way as pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to [email protected].

Woodstock Festival ProgramsQ: How do I sell three programs

from the 1969 Woodstock festival that are in excellent condition, and what is the range of their value?

A: The program is one of the few official souvenirs of the three-day music festival, which took place in a hayfield 40 miles from Woodstock, New York. No official Woodstock merchandise was sold at the event. The programs didn’t arrive until the last day, when there were no vendors to sell them, so they were thrown from the delivery truck, some in the boxes they came in. Not many survived in good condition because of the rain and the mud, or they were discarded and trampled on by the crowd.

The program has been reproduced. The letter “f” in the title “3 days of peace & music” on the cover of the original program is slightly fuzzy because it’s in the bud of the sunflower. It’s clearer in the reproduction. The first and last pages of the original program are onionskin parchment. The

reproduction pages are not as thin. Original Woodstock programs sell at auctions of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. Value of the right single program in good condition is about $200.

Poker Talk

The 'Stop-and-Go' MoveBy Chad Holloway

A lot of things separate professionals from amateurs in poker. One of the most important differences is that pros have a bag of tricks filled to the brim, while an amateur or recreational player tends to rely on a limited number or moves — bet, check, raise, fold or move all in.

One strategy that some pros will execute when the opportunity presents itself is the stop-and-go, which can only be done under specific circumstances. When a player is short-stacked in the blinds with a bad hand, a stop-and-go play may be in order.

Imagine you’re in the big blind and a player raises the minimum. You don’t have a lot of chips and look down at a mediocre hand. It’s not strong enough to move all in with, but you don’t want to fold it to such a small raise.

Instead, you may consider a stop-and-go, which means to just call the raise (the “stop” part of the equation) and, if you hit any part of the flop, to move all in (the “go”).

A recent hand of online poker demonstrated this play perfectly. The hand took place

in the 2021 Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker. Play had reached Level 17 (blinds of 3,000-6,000 with an ante of 750) in a $200-buy-in no-limit hold’em event.

It started when a player with the online handle BYAH20 — players choose a screen name and can play anonymously online — raised to 13,800 from middle position. Barrett Lipkin, sitting on a stack of 46,000 in chips, looked down at Qs 4s. It wasn’t a great hand, but with 6,000 already committed in the big blind, it would cost just 7,800 more for Lipkin to see a flop.

Lipkin made the call and then executed the stop-and-go play when the flop came down 7s 2s 2c. Lipkin didn’t pair up, but he did flop a spade flush draw. By moving all in for his last 32,200, he was trying to take advantage of his fold equity, which is the equity a player can expect to gain due to an opponent folding to his or her bets.

Even if BYAH20 called, which he eventually did with just Ac Jc, Lipkin could always get lucky. So, the stop-and-go is a twofold move in that (1) you hit the flop just enough to move all in and hopefully take advantage of your fold equity, and (2) if you get called, you’re still drawing live to win the pot.

Here, Lipkin was looking to either complete his flush or pair one of his cards. Unfortunately for him, neither the Kd turn nor the 8d river did it, and he was eliminated from the tournament.

While the end result wasn’t what he wanted, Lipkin’s stop-and-go attempt was admirable. Now that you know how it’s done, you might consider adding the stop-and-go to your poker bag of tricks.

In this article, we will explore some examples of the better video poker (VP) versions of yesterday and then move forward to the best strategies for play today whether online or off.

Pay schedules posted at VP slots are the first step to strategic play. The full pay VP versions have evolved to short pay over the years, therefore, I offer alternative options for VP play as detailed below.

For Jacks or Better, players should scan the 1 coin payout vertical for poker hands specifically for a 9/6 (nine coins for a full house, and 6 coins for a flush=full pay). Multiply by 5 for max coin return.

Jacks or Better (Jacks+) 9/6one-coin return + max Pays 2 for 2 pair

Flush (FL) (non-sequential, same suit)6 max = 30Full house (FH) (3 of a kind and a pair)9 max = 45

Full Pay 8/5 Bonus Poker pays less than Jack+ because of higher payouts of four aces = 400 and four 2s, 3s or 4s = 200. Bonus Poker 8/5one-coin return + maxPays 2 for 2 pair

Flush (FL) (non-sequential, same suit)5 = 25Full house (FH) (3 of a kind and a pair)8 = 40

Another example from yesterday was the full-pay 10/7 Double Bonus Video Poker paytable.

Double Bonus 10/7 VPone-coin return + maxFlush (FL) (non-sequential, same suit)7 = 35Full house (FH) (3 of a kind and a pair)10 = 50

The majority of payout reductions are for the full house return with Bonus VP versions.

Calculate the loss of winnings/hour and it’s not encouraging. 9/6 Jacks+ expected loss playing 5 coins per hand is $13.20/hour; 8/5 Jacks+ costs over $20/hour; and lousy 6/5 VP’s over $30/hour.

Knowing which slots to play saves you about $7-17/hour. Choose carefully.

TODAY: Be on the hunt for 9/7 or 9/6 Double Bonus. 8/5 Jacks or Better, and 7/5 Bonus Poker versions offering 2 coins or 10 max coins for 2 pair when full pay not available.

Wild Card Versions:Deuces Wild 9/5 full payone-coin return + maxWild Royal pays 125 max.

4-of-a-kind (quad) 5 = 25Straight Flush 9 = 45

Jokers Wild 9/5 full payone-coin return + maxKings or Better & Quad pays 100 max.

Flush (FL) (non-sequential, same suit)5 = 25Full house (FH) (3 of a kind and a pair)7 = 35

TODAY: Deuces: look for 9/4 payouts and 125 for Wild Royal. Try Bonus Deuces version offering larger pays for five 3s, 4s, 5s and Aces.

Jokers: locate at least 80 coin for 4-of-a-kind. 4,700 Royal. Kings or Better only, avoid 2 pair minimum pay tables. Don’t play 500 coin payout for Natural Royal.

While this advice does not include strategic play for each version; taking the time to locate the best version and playing maximum coin is a good plan to profit in VP land.

and relocated the flagship store to a new 10,000-square-foot 200-seat location at 252 Convention Center Drive, adjacent to the Convention Center expansion. We’re not expecting good VP schedules, but it’s the only place we know of where you can chow down on authentic latkes while shooting a twenty for lunch.
