This is the 36th Hat Fair! Three days of street arts, outdoor performance, dance, music

and circus all around the beautiful city centre of Winchester. There will be the children’s procession on Friday morning to kick things off this year, with a theme of hidden histories and myths of Winchester.Look out for shows on the High Street, Cathedral Green and The Broadway. Special sites this year include the Inner Close of the Cathedral, where Akademi are performing Asian contemporary dance. The Old Laundry in Hyde will be the host of a great show about boxing, set in a full boxing ring. We are proud to be working with two consortiums and partnerships to develop street arts nationally and in Europe. Without Walls is a national network of key street arts festivals and ZEPA is a partnership between Southern English and French partners. Watch the cream of the world’s hatting shows and wonderful international shows. Dance in the street on Saturday night and recover on Sunday in a relaxed manner at the Hat Fair Picnic. The Hat Fair team has really enjoyed putting together this year’s festival and we hope that you enjoy it.See you on the streets!

en plein air, de la danse, de la musique et du cirque - dans les rues de la belle ville de Winchester. Cette année nous commençons le vendredi matin avec un défilé des enfants sur le thème des histoires cachées et les mythes de Winchester. Regardez les spectacles dans High Street, The Broadway et autour de la cathédrale. Cette année nous sommes privilégés d’utiliser le ‘Inner Close’ de la cathédrale pour présenter la danse asiatique contemporaine par Akademi. En plus, la vielle blanchisserie à Hyde se transformera en vrai ring de boxe pour un spectacle formidable! Nous sommes fiers de travailler en association avec des partenaires britanniques et europèens pour mieux développer les arts de la rue. Without Walls est un réseau national des principaux festivals des arts de la rue britanniques et ZEPA est un partenariat entre des organisations du nord de la France et du sud d’Angleterre. Without Walls is a consortium of eight of the UK's most strategically significant outdoor arts festivals. By working together in the pursuit of a set of common goals, over the last 3 years Without Walls has been breaking new ground in the development and creation of outdoor arts in the UK. Outdoor Arts have a universal appeal and are now being recognised for their ability to engage and bring together communities and to shape a sense of place and identity. Without Walls' exciting commissioning opportunities for UK artists are helping raise the bar for free and accessible outdoor arts, demonstrating that excellence and engagement can go hand in hand.

Prodigal Theatre’s Urban Playground Team present ‘The Next Level’ UK/FRAProdigal Theatre’s Urban Playground Team works in partnership with French company Gravity Style to produce dynamic physical performances examining the relationship between the human body and the built environment. Gravity Style are the co-creators of Parkour, or “L’art du deplacement”, the discipline of overcoming physical obstacles with movement that is safe, efficient and fluid. Together the companies blend the philosophy of Parkour with various contemporary, urban and hip hop dance styles to produce choreographies reflecting the environments in which they work. The Next Level was co-commissioned by the Without Walls consortium, Brighton Festival and Dome, and the JUICE Newcastle Gateshead’s festival for children and young people.

KULJIT BHAMRA’S ‘CHUTNEY’ ; UKHindi, English & Bhojpuri lyrics combined with the sounds of Soca, Calypso and Filmi music... Kuljit Bhamra’s CHUTNEY will entertain you with uptempo songs and vibrant dance sequences inspired by musicians. Chutney is a new strolling street band and programme of music led by renowned British Asian musician/composer Kuljit Bhamra. The inspiration for the band is “Chutney” music, the popular musical style of the Indian community in Trinidad that blends influences from Asia and the Caribbean in a “spicy” mix of guitars, horns and percussion.

Without Walls (Sans Murs) est une association de huit des principaux festivals des arts de la rue britanniques. En travaillant ensemble sur des objectifs en commun, pendant les dernières trois années Without Walls a percé un nouveau chemin dans la création et le développement des arts de la rue en Royaume Uni. Avec un appel universel, les arts de la rue sont maintenant reconnus pour leur rôle dans l’engagement communitaire et pour leur contribution à la création de l’identité d’un lieu. Le programme de donne de commissions de Without Walls contribue à améliorer la qualité des événements gratuits et accessible à tous. Ce programme montre que l’excellence artistique et l’engagement communitaire peuvent servir d’appuis réciproques.

AKADEMI present SUFI Zen ; UKAn intimate dance theatre experience that unites the stillness of Zen meditation with the rapturous motion of Sufi dervishes. Evoking a cultural landscape that extends from Persia to Japan, Sufi:Zen exists in a world of contrasts – of ice and fire, entropy and energy, introspection and divine omniscience. Sufi:Zen is choreographed by Gauri Sharma Tripathi with the support of Jonathan Lunn and Mavin Khoo. It merges on multiple dance styles, including kathak, bharata natyam, contemporary and ballet. Set to a score by Shrikanth Sriram, this performance reflects Akademi’s long-standing reputation for presenting modern perspectives on traditional South Asian dance forms in unusual and distinct spaces.

Ragroof Theatre present Gloves On ; UKGloves On is set in and around a full size, floodlit boxing ring. Exploring boxing’s place in the British psyche, this intense and visceral performance conveys the emotional and physical challenges a boxer experiences and investigates the intricacies of courage, masculinity and honour, ritual and spectatorship. The audience are invited to take the side of the champion or challenger before the battle commences and pounding musical beats fill the space as the fighters enter the ring to the raucous delight of the crowd. The imaginations of the Ragroof Theatre team, who make work in unusual spaces, are inspired by other people’s memories and knitted together using physical expression, text, soundscapes, poetry and visual language.

Wired Aerial Theatre in collaboration with Henri Oguike Dance Company ; UKThis delicious double bill premières a new collaboration between these two companies paired with a welcome revival of Wired Aerial Theatre’s Rosa’s Bar. Over the years, Wired Aerial Theatre have refined their own creation, bungee-assisted dance, into a beautifully refined and exquisite aerial piece Rosa’s Bar: a spectacle brimming with quirky characters, tango beats, magic tricks, flying, and incredible illusions. All this is served up with their characteristic humour and passion. In Straw Dog, Wired Aerial Theatre join forces with the internationally renowned dance innovator Henri Oguike in the creation of a new Without Walls commission.

LUCI GORREL BARNES presents ‘The tragic and disturbing tale of Little Lupin’ ; UKWith it’s roots in the rich, dark soils of fairy tales, ‘Little Lupin’ tells the story of a girl who is not like others, and how life in the woods can take unexpected turns. Join two unusually hairy sisters for a performance which takes you through the hidden spaces of Bristol Old Vic and deep into an off kilter world of wolfish play and shape shifting. Drawing together live music, performance and hand drawn animation, this show is for anyone who has ever strayed off the path and into the woods. Supported by Without Walls, Theatre Bristol and Bristol Old Vic, this show has limited audience numbers, visit show to ‘book a ticket/space’ early in the day.


36 years ago, Hat Fair originated from hatting performances (where artists pass around

a hat for donations after their show) on the city’s streets; the small-scale performance is

at the heart of what we do. Each year we hope to introduce you to new performers and

shows from around the world, as well as to bring back some of the UK’s most popular

street artists.

Derek Mcalister ; USAFranky J and his disco style will dazzle you with electrifying manipulation while escaping from the latest in female fashion. Once free, you will enjoy the ‘Hottest’ three-torch routine ever created by Man, allegedly.

Mr Jon Hicks ; UKThrough unhealthy feats of amazement with toy elephants, Mr. Hicks’ meditational and delusional obsession has created a highly trained coterie of toy elephants that, perform amazing stunts, illusions and acts of beauty.

Kiki and Paschale; UKAUSWe've all seen illusions and magic before and we have all heard the term ‘comedy magician’ but take your preconceptions and stuff them in your rabbit. These two will surprise you.

Tony Garulo; UKSPAUnfortunately his artists are in revolt, and the performing tigers on hunger strike (due to an imposed vegetarian diet.) To cap it all, his venue has burnt down. Can the show go on? Shay Horay presents The Famous Rubberband Boy; NZHolder of The Guinness World Record for

Rubberbands on his face. Shay is so funny he should have been twins! A master of comedy, acrobatics and escapology.

Strictly Dumb Prancing; UKThis over-sequinned couple combine their superbly skilled acrobalance and dubious tango dancing with a generous helping of comedy in this hilarious battle of skills, wills and cheesy smiles.

Frenetic Engineering present Calamity Jane; UKShe’s as sassy as a bullock, as accurate as a blindfolded donkey, has the charms of a mangy fox and is usually as drunk as a skunk. Run for them there hills if she gets her knives out or sings a song cos maybe you’ll see how Calamity gets her name!

Frenetic Engineering also present Femme Fatale ; UKA collision of glamour and incompetence results in a hilarious street show involving knife throwing, audience participation, fire eating, bad magic and sandwich making!

The Pitts presentThe Pitts Family Circus ; AUSA small circus family from Tasmania. Their show fuses highly skilled acrobatics with unusual juggling, bizarre contortion and off-beat humour to provide a stunning and hilarious show for all the family to enjoy.

Pan Gottic present Full Twist; UKAn upbeat dynamic physical comedy, telling a witty tale of lust and love mixing a blend of clowning, physical theatre, juggling and acrobatics without using a single word. Wonderful and hugely original.

Banjo Orchestra Circus; UKAUSThe smallest banjo orchestra with circus tricks in the world who love banjo's and are highly skilled musicians. They love circus and perform wonderful tricks together. They have created a new genre called ‘banjo circus’.

English Gents Present the Gents Abroad; AUSTwo delightful gentlemen who perform inconceivable feats of acrobatic skill, strength and balance, whilst casually sipping tea, reading the newspaper or whatever tickles one’s fancy. The Gents are also one of the star acts from Olivier Award winning Cabaret show, La Clique.

Haggis and Charlie; UKThey have wowed audiences everywhere with their award-winning action-packed mix of humour, daring and charm. It’s not just the comedy and skill, it’s the complete clash of personalities that makes this show so exceptional.

Mr Pineapplehead; UKThis delightful and funny clown show combines a good old fashioned childrens entertainer with modern visual comedy. Join Mr Pineapple Head and discover all sorts of toys and clown magic as he explores the world of play and silliness.

Skate Naked; UKThe show itself sees the veteran acrobatic duo performing a mind-bending display of hilarious and dangerous stunts. With fire stunts, whip tricks and general lunacy all thrown into the mix and delivered at what seem breakneck speed, this is one not to be missed.

The ZEPA Network an INTEREG Funded partnership“Zone European de Projets Artistique”

An exciting, innovative Trans-National partnership between 5 UK and 4 French Street Theatre and Outdoor Arts Producers and Festivals. Over the next 3 years we are producing, commissioning and supporting many Outdoor Arts projects and shows, together.

Working with both UK and French Outdoor Artists and Performers, we will be presenting all the work on the streets of the INTEREG region and at its partners’ events and festivals, from Cornwall to Brittany, Great Yarmouth to Amiens, Newhaven to Rouen and many other places in between. There will also be many other artistic and human exchanges alongside the presentations, including workshops, volunteering opportunities, education and inter generational projects. We hope these projects and events will touch the hearts of all who engage, watch and participate.

THE ZEPA NETWORK PROJECT 2008-2012

This Interreg IVA European programme, under the watchful eye of the European Community, aims at developing Street Theatre and Community Events throughout this european-region. Running from 2008-2012, ZEPA (Zone European Projects Artistic) groups together 9 partners from the South of England and the North of France: Hat Fair (Winchester), Brighton Festival (Brighton), Zap Art (Brighton), Southampton City Council (Southampton), Seachange Arts (Great Yarmouth) and, in France, Amiens Métropole – Le Hangar / Street Theatre Creation Centre (Amiens), l’Atelier 231 - National Centre for Street Theatre (Sotteville-lès-Rouen), Le Fourneau - National Center for Street Theater (Brest), and Culture Commune – National Centre of the Mining Bassin of Pas-de-Calais (Loos-en-Gohelle).

This cross-border network aims at contributing to the cultural, social, tourist and economic development of these european-regions in question, via support for the production of Street Theatre and Outdoor Community Events, setting a proactive process into motion for the populations concerned.

MAKING INROADS AND ILLUMINATING THE EUROPEAN-REGIONS

Each of the 9 partners of the network are well known in their geographic area, thanks to operations with their local partners, i.e. local authorities, artistic and cultural organisations, companies, artists and the general public. The network created by the ZEPA project will enable the accumulation of the effects of each of these 9 partners, to guarantee a better cultural offer for all the european-regions and a fruitful increase in national and cross-border co-operation.

EUROPEAN-REGION ARTISTIC PROJECT

The production and performance for the communities in public open spaces are at the centre of the overall project. The notion of “Euroregion Artistic Project” illustrates a truly communicative approach to the European-region, led by the Artists and Producers themselves. The latter have to seize the challenges identified by the partners, such as citizenship, urban regeneration, adapt to and take over the heritage, educational development, to design co-operative projects with many different Artists and groups. All projects will have a direct link and dialogue with each population in question.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABLE EXCHANGE BASEDON THE LIVING HERITAGE OF THE EUROPEAN-REGIONS

In the project there will also be exchanges of knowledge, skill sharing, meetings with local inhabitants and local professionals, the creation of shared multi-media tools (the ZEPA Internet site), and a legacy will be created. All of the partners’ actions aim towards leaving an imprint of the project, as well as encounters and mutual enhancement, which are at the heart of the ZEPA ethos, this will truly give it longlasting effects beyond 2012. An actual publication will also be created documenting this exciting project from beginning to end.

LE RAYONNEMENT ET L’IRRIGATION DES TERRITOIRES

Chacun des 9 partenaires du réseau sont des acteurs bien implantés sur leur zone géographique grâce à des actions en lien avec les partenaires locaux : collectivités territoriales et locales, structures artistiques et culturelles, compagnies, populations spécifiques. Le réseau constitué par le projet ZEPA permettra des rayonnements cumulés de chacun des 9 partenaires pour une meilleure irrigation de tous les territoires et une démultiplication fructueuse des coopérations nationales et transfrontalières.

DES PROJETS ARTISTIQUES DE TERRITOIRES

La création et la restitution auprès des populations dans l’espace public sont au coeur du projet global. La notion de « projet artistiques de territoires » illustre une approche transversale du territoire,mise en oeuvre par les artistes. Ceux-ci sont conduits à s’emparer d’enjeux, identifiés par les partenaires, tels que la citoyenneté, la régénération urbaine, l’appropriation du patrimoine, le développement éducatif… ; pour concevoir des projets de coopération mis en oeuvre en lien direct avec les populations concernés.

LE DEVELOPPEMENT D’UN ECHANGE DURABLE AUTOURDES PATRIMOINES VIVANTS DES TERRITOIRES

La formation, les échanges de savoir-faire, les rencontres entre habitants et professionnels, la constitution d’outils multimédia partagés (www.zepa9.eu), les « traces » sont autant d’actions conduites par les partenaires, visant à graver le travail commun, la rencontre et l’enrichissement mutuel au coeur du projet pour le pérenniser au-delà de 2012.

The Grimox Brothers will present to you ‘Sophocles, the still unexplained mystery of the bodiless Philosopher.’ Inspired by the horror movies of the 1950s and by travelling fairground theatre, ‘Voyage en Bordure du Bord du Bout du Monde’ (‘Journey on the edge of the end of the world’) is a comic, cosmic saga that goes back over the terrible story of ‘Sophocles the Philosopher’. A tale of suspense and the bizarre, an incredibly unique adventure made of danger, acrobatic stunts, dark music and evil spells…Beware, madness may ensue!

Acid Kostik present ‘Step right up’; FRAAcid Kostik invites you to join their delicious parody; The Church of Stepology (think Step aerobics meets Scientology!?) and its 3 most ardent supporters, as they stroll in search of the new Grail; eternal youth.‘Step right up!’ is far from being an easy path.This is a show mixing sport, dance and spirituality and why not!?

VO Compagnie present ‘The Wind Cleaner’; FRADo we realize that the trees planted in urban areas are removed from their natural forest environment? Isolated, subjected to air pollution and noise, victims of urinary attacks by canine and human species, they have no benchmarks and die slowly. Nicolas Gengoux attempts, through several steps to help recover their memory of the forest. Using traditional methods and advanced technologies, he has throughout the week been demonstrating his green fingers, to revitalize the city's trees by removing particulate pollution and ozone emissions with a terrulic wave machine, destressing roots, sending wind, and through tribal rituals. The presence of the four elements; water, earth, air and fire highlight the highly spiritual dimension of this unique approach to gardening. Visit Nicholas, as he will be with us from Thursday Ist until his work reaches its stunning conclusion on Saturday afternoon!

B.O.S.I present Nancy the Wheelie Bin; UKWatch out for Nancy, she has a life of her

own, part mischievous, part curious, she will certainly delight and surprise passers by, and you’ll never look at a wheelie bin the same way again.

Space Cowboy; AUSA truly unique and exciting act, who has shown his calibre and skill by performing at the Edinburgh festival fifteen years in a row, winning ‘The Street Performance World Championship’ in 2006 and 2007 and he also holds six Guinness World Records for his unusual skills.

Pete Sweet; USAThis show crackles with bizarre spontaneity and awesome skill. Pete sings crazy jazz while dancing, juggling and riding a unicycle on a rope high above the ground! Pete’s performance in Winchester in 2008 was such a joy to watch we’ve been trying to get him back ever since.

Lords of Strut ; IRESeamus and Sean will do anything to be famous. Street circus has never seen anything like these two lads. In so many ways they are wrong; walking a fine line of social corruptibility. Over styled and under dressed they will be making an impact.

WALKABOUT ACTSFair Play present Ramblers; UK Pleasant, easygoing, eccentrics carry a bizarre map from which they can ask directions or relate stories of their travels. The stories themselves vary in styles between comical, poignant or absurd and engage people of all ages.

INSTALLATIONS

Once Arts present Picnic; UKReceiving a picnic like package filled with small objects, instructions and script, the players are led through the performance page by page – casting, creating the set, sound effects and providing dialogue and detail.

These intimate performances empower participants and engage them with their surroundings, creativity and each other. This performance has limited audience capacity. Please visit the show on Saturday on Cathedral Green and book a spot.

Dot Comedy present The Chain; UKAUSA chain of events triggering a domino effect leading to a loop of disasters which self-perpetuate one another ad infinitum. A random chain of slapstick blunders that develops into a physical conceit of chronological disaster with hilarious results. Outside The Eclipse Pub Market Street on Saturday afternoon. River People present The Midnight Chorus; UKA showcase of terrible tales, come bear witness to the sorrowful story of 'the Vanishing Boy', the twisted tale of 'the Ordinaries' and the maudlin memories of 'Old Man Willow'. Each yarn is delicately spun using puppetry and a macabre medley of live musicians.

Pickled Image present Bernard's Puppet Bonanza ; UKBernard, old time puppet man, the last of a dying breed. A true entertainer who will carry, on despite technical nightmares and total incompetence...a brilliantly wrong and utterly hilarious show by a very experienced performer.

B.O.S.I present Shirt or Squirt; UKA cycle race for two competitors –two riders compete in an endurance cycle challenge…Competitors generate electricity, which powers the fans and the water pumps, The winner takes the yellow shirt while the loser gets the squirt!

Hyde ValeJust a stone’s throw from the Historic Hyde Abbey and Northern Gate to the city, the area around Stockbridge Road, Andover Road, City Road, Jewry Street and North Walls is home to a host of quality independent retailers selling everything from bicycles to banjos. Why not pay a visit to The Sweet Treat Co and indulge yourself in some classic confectionary.

The Constabulary The Constabulary can be found close to the High Street and next to The Square, stretching as far as Southgate Street. It is made up of St Thomas Street, Southgate Street, St Clement Street, Minster Lane, Little

Minster and Great Minster Street. These charming winding lanes are home to many independent shops selling everything from traditional wooden toys to contemporary designer furniture.

St. Georges Street St. Georges Street can be found adjacent to Winchester High Street. This area is home to award winning hardware stores, camera and photographic shops, cafes and eateries. St Georges Street is your gateway to Parchment Street, Upper Brook Street and the Brooks shopping centre as well as being a superb shopping destination in its own right.

HAT FAIR IN THE COMMUNITY

Hat Fair supports primary educational activities as part of its annual programme with Schools’ Day. It offers opportunities for local schools and youth organisations to participate in the arts

and to work with professional artists to create visual art, dance, music and theatre for the festival.

Friday 2nd JulyHat Fair opens its celebrations with Schools’ Day - a children’s parade featuring many local schools and artists. Schools work with Hat Fair artists to create costumes, music and dance for performance. The procession takes the children through the city to Cathedral Green where the children are then able to watch the first shows of Hat Fair!

This year’s theme is ‘hidden histories and myths of Winchester’. Each year Hat Fair works with schools and community organisations to develop a wide range of free educational workshops involving the arts. We are commited to developing arts skills with the city’s young people and enabling them to share their experience at the festival.

Hat Fair have been working in partnership with the BA Street Arts at Winchester University to bring Dot Comedy’s ‘The Chain’ to the festival. Students on the Street Arts Degree have been working with the company and will perform with them in the show.


MARKETS AT HAT FAIR

On Friday and Saturday there will be Arts and Crafts stalls located in The Square and just on Saturday, a Fair Trade Market on The Broadway plus food stalls. On Sunday an eclectic

and a delightfully diverse Market will be located at Oram’s Arbor during the Picnic in The Park.This year’s stalls include hand-made diachronic jewellery, original artworks, juggling equipment, crafts from Thailand, India, Tibet, Africa and Morocco, vintage adverts in funky forms, portrait photography from an award winning designer, handmade clothes, children’s t-shirts, lace skirts, saris, scarves, bags from recycled materials and, of course, HATS!

Art Markets, Winchester(Unfortunately not coinciding with Hat Fair this year, but well worth popping back for) On the third Sunday of the month in Middle Brook Street. This is a wonderful new area to showcase and purchase Art, Design-led Craft and work from New Designers. It will be the third Sunday of each month from June 20th until 19th December. Hat Fair MemorabiliaHat Fair t-shirts and other merchandise will be on sale throughout the weekend, a perfect souvenir and memory of the festival! These will all be available from the Information Stand adjacent to The Square.


OTHER EVENTS

HAT FAIR HISTORIC DECOR In 2000 Hat Fair commisioned the artist Silvia Jahnson to create the Hat Fair Historic Street Flags. Silvia has year on year repaired and maintained these beautiful ‘art-works’. The flags are based on aspects of the great window in Winchester Cathedral. Silvia developed a unique technique to make the flags non toxic and water based, yet still durable in the outside weather as part of her ‘art for the environment’ project.

HAT EXHIBITION AT MILITARY MUSEUM There will be a display of military hats in The Guardroom Museum with background stories and a collection where people can try on hats. There will also be a hat trail through the museums and children go free on 3rd and 4th July!

WINCHESTER CITY MILL The Winchester City Mill is a rare surviving example of an urban working corn mill, powered by the fast-flowing River Itchen, which can be seen passing under the mill, thrilling our visitors. During the Hat Fair weekend entry to the Mill will be completely free, don’t miss out on this wonderful offer.

WINCHESTER WRITERS’ CONFERENCE 2010 25-27 June at the University of Winchester followed by the in-depth weeklong writing workshops. Enjoy Sir Terry Pratchett's Plenary Address, Carol Ann Duffy's reading of favourite poems and a feast of 43 workshops, 60 lectures and 500 one to one appointments designed to help you to harness your creative ideas and develop your professional practice under the guidance of over 60 leading novelists, poets, playwrights, commissioning editors, literary agents and industry specialists.

The Vagaband; UKThe Vagaband plays roots music. Country, folk, rock, soul & swing filter through from their sound. The mood is joyous, the songs are colourful and the dance floor is bouncing. Sometimes ironic, other times weighty, the band enjoys balancing their act between choice covers, energetic original songs with an infectious beat and old time classic’s that deal with those age old honkytonk issues - love, death and choo-choo trains! Broadway stage - 2200 – 2300.

Red Jackson; UKRed Jackson are a rootsy trio serving up classic Rhythm & Blues, stripping the dish down to its basic ingredients - guitar, vocals, harmonica, drums and double bass - and introducing the unique Red Jackson seasoning; a subtle blend of flavours such as red hot rockabilly and cool funky jazz to create authentic retro grooves with upbeat contemporary appeal.


Hat Fair is a registered charity with a small team of experienced professionals who work to deliver world class street arts and entertainment to the City of Winchester. During the festival you will see Hat Fair volunteers collecting money on behalf of the organisation, which all goes towards making the festival happen each year. Every donation helps to keep this festival alive, small or large! Winchester is connected to the motorway network with easy access from all parts of the country. Drivers approaching Winchester from the North should exit at junction 9 on the M3. At junction 10, motorists can only access and exit the M3 from the South.
