Hill go on goal spree
Andy Barrell hits five... Winchmore Hill cruised into the
third round of the AFA Senior
Cup with a convincing 8 - 1
victory against Old Latymerians
at The Paulin Ground on Satur-
day. Full credit to Lats, they
didn't give up and for the first
period of the second half they
were looking dangerous.
The Hill quickly settled down
and took an early lead when
Andy Barrell fired home from
close range. One became two
shortly afterwards when Barrell
struck again and three more
goals were added before the
interval to give the Hill a com-
fortable cushion at the break. For the first fifteen minutes of
the second half a late arrival
would have thought that Old
Latymerians were in the lead.
They got a goal back and the
Hill looked ragged and shape-
less. The Hill coach changed the
game with the introduction of
Courtney Chin on the right
flank, moving Chris Davison to
the left. This changed the Hill
shape and improved the bal-
ance of the side.
Three more goals were scored
before the final whistle to give
the Hill an 8 - 1 victory and a
home tie in the next round
against Wood Green Old Boys
on 4th December. Scorers: Andy Barrell 5, Rod
Beya, Yusef Bellow, Danny
Brennan.
On the bottom pitch the Re-
serves were playing Merton in
an Intermediate Division One
Fixture. Two early goals saw
the Hill in a comfortable posi-
tion at the interval but Merton
exerted pressure at the begin-
ning or the second period and
reduced the arrears.
Two late goals for the Hilll en-
sured a comfortable win.
Scorers: Stuart Broad 2, Jordan
Williams, Mason Mallick.

Winchmore Hill started the defence of the AFA cup with a home tie against unknown opponents Old Laytermerians. Hill again made changes with Steve coming in for Gylo who was out injured although he did-n‘t look it swinging crosses in for Carter during the warm up. Steve also broke the racial divide in the warm up when he joined the limited ability white boys group
for passing, which has not been done for many years. Also Danny Brennan came back in for Shaun Myatsungo.
Hill got off to the fast start that was need-ed when Davo (Chris Davison) set up Andy Barrell to slot home inside 10 minutes, the supporters didn‘t have to wait much longer for number two when Brennan nicked Barrell‘s header from on the goal line. The Hill were now rampant and Yusef Bello‘s cross shot making it 3. The Hill then added two more before half time with Bar-rell getting both to complete his hat trick. There was even time for Davo to smash a couple over the pavilion and as always the connection was great ac-cording to the striker.
The second half the Hill were sluggish for the first twenty minutes and full credit to Latymerians, who didn‘t give up despite the score line, and scored when Hill‘s Rod Beya smashed it in from a corner. This woke up the Hill and they scored again soon after when Barrell lobbed the keeper and with space appearing Barrell played Beya in to make amends for his error ear-
lier to make it seven. Barrell then beat the offside trap and added his fifth and Hills 8th after playmaker Branners (Martin Brannigan) put a sublime 40 yard through ball to the striker. Hill could have had more with Barrell missing chances for a double hat- trick which his men-tor Hurst completed once in his 90 odd goals for the club.
Overall a good win against a spirited opposition but on the negatives another game without
a clean sheet and a sluggish second half display which we can‘t afford to happen next week against Nottsborough or they will punish us.
The Hill meet Wood Green Old Boys in the next round on 4th December at The Pau-lin.

The twos rolled back the years this week
with Newton sending out the team in a 1980‘s 4-3-3 formation. Joe McHugh in nets, back four of Roche, Cook, Hack-worthy and G, midfield three of Beech, Dench, and Broad and up top Dash playing wide leftish, Glen wide right and Tony K playing the Andy Carroll role!
A strong bench saw the return of Patrick, alongside Suraya and Jordon Williams.
Newton still feeling his hamstring stayed strictly in tracksuit mode.
A quick start was asked for and delivered by all eleven players in purple. Smart short
passing put Glen Haslam clear who in turn provided a fantastic cross from the right which was superbly headed into the top corner of the Merton net by Dash. A seri-ously good goal. 1-0
Shortly after, the Hill passing well again put
Broad through one on one and the end re-sult was never in doubt. 2-0
The formation was working and Merton just could not deal with the quality of Winch-more play. Unfortunately we appeared to peak too soon and as we approached half time the intensity had died down and the Hill were struggling to add a third goal.
Half time was a chorus of positives from Jack, Shane and Frank but with a warning that Merton were still in the game and the next goal was crucial.
Not much happened for the first 20 mins of
the second half and yes the inevitable hap-pened. The Merton winger played simple ball into the box which was not dealt with and the strikers cross shot flew into the bottom corner of McHugh‘s net. 2-1
To be honest I can‘t remember the next
part of the game other then Merton applied 10 mins of pressure that was dealt with by the Hill defence and then playing on the counter attack Broad and then Substitute Williams added goals 3 and 4. Final score 4-1.
A strong all round performance and the
good run continues.
Just a note for all those out there trying to tighten their belts in these times of finan-cial austerity. Take a lesson from Daniel Roche! I overheard him discussing his an-nual subs payment with an unnamed mem-
ber of bar staff. Mr Roche (just for your info is about to go to University to study accounting) was paying £10 on his HSBC ‗solo‘ card and explained this low fee as a down payment to secure the discounted rate of £75. He then stated to me that he will pay the rest of his subs at a rate of £10
every month and explains this decision as ―it is psychologically easier to pay monthly and it makes him feel like he is actually paying less!‖ Roche for Chancellor of the Exchequer!!!

Chris Ingram’s World Tour…
The Purple (and pink) Number Ten goes walkabout
We entered Peru at night and woke up in a town in
Northern Peru called Puira. Some advice for every-one would be don't ever go there. It was awful so we quickly got out and went to a beach resort on the northern coast called Mancora. The surf there was excellent and as a result there loads of Australi-ans on their spring break. We enjoyed the partying for a little while but I think I'm getting too old to be doing it every night. There were some stunning sunsets however although usually this was when we were getting up.
Next we moved down to the coast to a small much quieter resort called Huanchaco. It was much quieter than Mancora and we really enjoyed it. There was a pier like at Brighton that we could fish off but after 2 days worth I had caught no fish whilst my wife had caught one. I don't un-derstand how but I promised to get my revenge later whilst in the Chilean Lake District. We also bumped into the Dutch couple again here and actually talked to them for the first time.
At Huanchaco we also visited our first ruins. We were going to see a lot of ruins but this one was our first and one of the best we visited. It was called Chan Chan and we en-
joyed walking around it although we did get chased by some crazy hairless dogs. They were very scary looking and we christened them the dogs of apoca-lypse.
After Huanchaco we went up into the mountains to a place called Huaraz. This was the highest we had been so far at 3,300 metres and we also visited a National Park with some amazing lakes. We also saw our first llamas one day. They were on a path and we were too scared to walk past them meaning we had to wait until their owner came and moved them for us. He found it very amusing but they

were big animals. We felt a little foolish after-
wards but nobody else was there and so how would anyone find out?
Next we moved onto Lima which despite every-one giving it a bad rep we quite enjoyed. It was in Lima that I had the biggest rack of ribs that I've ever eaten. If anyone goes to Lima go to TJI Fridays on the beach and have the ribs. They
were delicious and massive.
Good luck to everyone this week

Old Forresters 0 Nottsborough 4 (from Nottsborough website) Nottsborough 1s travelled (in the back of an old ford transit van) to North London to play Old For-resters for the 1st round of the AFA Cup. Ben Hick-es (ex 3s) led a good warm up and Nottsborough seemed ready to get off to a flyer. However, the opening 10 minutes saw Old Forresters on top and Nottsborough not at the races. Nottsborough final-ly came to life after 15 minutes and hit a hot streak for the remainder of the half which saw 3 outstanding goals. Steve Mcmillan (ex 3s) opened the scoring for Nottsborough, pinging a left foot volley into the bottom left hand corner. This was quickly followed by an unbelievable strike from Dan Mcewan (ex 2s) hitting the stancheon from a ridiculous angle. Chris Apaloo (ex 3s) joined the party hitting with a sweet strike from outside the box. 3 excellent goals which were the reward for some excellent passing football. Debutant Michael Classens was impressive and, alongside Steve Mcmillan, bossed the midfield. This allowed Notts-borough to play and for 25 minutes they were hard to live with.
With Nottsborough in control and the game effec-tively won, the second half saw the intensity of the game drop off. Old Forresters threatened intermit-tently but Nottsborough goalkeeper and defence were rarely in danger. There was still time for some good football best shown in the final goal of the game. Good work from Parker on the left wing saw him deliver an excellent cross which Chris Apaloo calmly side footed into the bottom corner to complete his brace.
Post match analysis took place in 'the goose' in Walthamstow where you could get a beer and burger for £3.99! Gary Cullinan has the skipper to thank for saving his life during a highly competitive game of tube olympics on the Victoria line during the journey home.
A good start in the AFA cup for Nottsborough 1s. 9 wins from 9 games now this season and with the squad strengthening week on week there will be some serious competition for places.
Old Parkonians 2 West Wickham 0 (from Old Parkonians website) After 5 matches unbeaten in October, Old Parkoni-ans were up against perennial SAL Division 1 chal-lengers, West Wickham in the 1st round of the AFA Senior Cup. This was always going to be a difficult match for the Fairlop based side but with-out seven first choice starters, including all their representative players, and ten in total it was a tougher challenge than we could have ever antici-pated. If this had been a cup final, perhaps some of those injured would have been risked. However, with a number of players carrying knocks from the last few weeks‘ action, it was important for Parks
to get their best players 100% fit.
This meant that seven changes were made to the Parks‘ starting line-up, with 4th choice goalkeeper, Adam Nicoll making his debut for the 1‘s. Jack Sykes-Wood was also making his debut after his amazing goalscoring run for the 2‘s. In addition, Dave Jones, James Billingham & Dave Worthington were brought in from the reserves, with Gavin O‘Flaherty and Gbolahan Ladipo also returning to the fold.
Expecting West Wickham to start at a high tempo, it was the home side who were immediately look-ing the better of the two sides. Maintaining much better possession, Parks were controlling the mid-field. Owen Price and O‘Flaherty had plenty of room in the full-back positions as Parks were able to exploit West Wickham‘s formation. The Fairlop based side were passing the ball well out of de-fence and Dave Gallagher was switching the play constantly.
Despite the clear possession and territorial ad-vantage, Parks failed to test the away side‘s goal-keeper on enough occasions. West Wickham had to make an enforced substitution on the 20 minute mark as their goalkeeper pulled up with what looked like a thigh injury.
Playing at a quick tempo in possession, Parks got the goal that their play richly deserved on the half hour mark. With Sam Fuller winning the ball in midfield, he drove on into the West Wickham half before slipping in Chris Morgan on the left. The ―chunky‖ looking left midfielder slid the ball across the penalty area, and with Ladipo, the defender and goalkeeper all missing the ball it trickled into the far right-hand corner.
West Wickham came back into the match in the last five minutes of the half. However, Nicoll in the Parks goal was hardly tested in opening 45 minutes as the home side‘s back four defended resolutely.
HT: Old Parkonians 1-0 West Wickham
Parks knew they needed to maintain the same level of quality in possession, and defend strongly to maintain their advantage. West Wickham re-jigged their formation slightly and made it harder for Parks to maintain possession as well as they had done in the first half. However, Parks still looked the sharper in possession and the more likely to add further goals to the scoreline.
West Wickham‘s main threats were coming from set pieces, and their best chance of the afternoon was headed wide when their centre half was well placed. The away side also had a goal disallowed as their forward was still off the pitch when a cor-ner kick was taken before re-entering the field of play as the ball reached the penalty area. All the Parks players had stopped, as had the majority of
the away side.
With the game getting stretched, Sykes-Wood was beginning to become a greater threat. Linking well with Ladipo, the midfielder could have scored on a couple of occasions as his clever runs were causing the West Wickham defence problems.
The 2nd goal that Parks were craving finally arrived with 15 minutes left. Fuller fed Sykes-Wood about 30 yards out. The Parks midfielder let the ball bounce before unleashing an un-stoppable strike into the top right corner. A fantastic goal.
Parks continued to defend superbly and restrict West Wickham to half chances. O‘Flaherty, Jones, Billingham and Price were excellent throughout the 90 minutes. The away side had a late appeal for a penalty for handball, but the incident was clearly two yards outside the box.
Parks could have scored further goals in the final five minutes as Sykes-Wood found himself through on the away side‘s goal on two occa-sions. However, the midfielder could not quite find the finishing touch to match his superb runs.
FT: Old Parkonians 2-0 West Wickham
An outstanding win for Parks. With the number of notable absentees, this performance was the perfect illustration of the strength of the club this season. The home side clearly deserved to progress to the next round of the AFA Senior Cup against higher league opposition. After such an excellent performance, it gives Mark Jamieson more than a few headaches as play-ers return to the fold over the next week or two. Parks need to maintain the quality of per-formance as they face Old Woodhouseians at home in the quarter-final of the Old Boys cup this Saturday .
Old Hamptonians 4 Broomfield 1
'BROOMS REFUSE AT THE FIRST' Last season's AFA Senior Cup semi-finalists Broomfield sadly fell at their first hurdle this time around, going out to a spirited Old Hamp-tonians side. In an entertaining match of 'contrasting styles' plenty of goal scoring chanc-es were on offer to both sides, ultimately it was the home sides 'sharper skills' in both penalty areas that gave them the edge, thus allowing them to ease into the next round of the compe-tition.
In conditions excellent for football Brooms dis-appointed by starting hesitantly, perhaps be-cause of the 'large amount of changes' to their regular line-up taking time to gel. Brooms early disarray allowed Hampton to gain an initiative and after pressurising the away side soon scored when Brooms conceded a penalty, fol-lowing a succession of 'ill judged tackles'.
After the early reverse Brooms managed to settled into a good football mode and the game became very open, both sides drawing good saves from two competent goalkeepers. With the game finely balanced Hampton struck a vital blow just before half time a hesitant Brooms back-line was exposed by a Hampton attacker who waltzed through a 'frozen de-fence' to side foot home.
A determined Brooms continued to attack in the second half and displaying some neat football, were rewarded after the 'ever dangerous' Scot Wallis crossed to allow 'hard working' Barny Jones to score a deserved goal. With the match now back in the balance it was Brooms who looked the most likely to score, however they seemed unable to put a finishing touch to some incisive moves.
As Brooms strained to get an equaliser and time drifted away it was the home side who stole away to score the 'match clincher', when Brooms midfield failed to cover a break from one of their opposite number and allowed a far too easy access for the scorer.
Despite the cause now looking lost, Brooms continued to attacked with skill but still could not break down the 'resilient home defence'. With minutes left on the clock, Brooms unde-servedly conceded a fourth goal, Mark Robbins blinded by a setting sun was unable to deal with a high ball into the box, this also symboli-cally brought the 'sun down' on Broomfield's cup hopes for this seasons.
THE BLUE ONLOOKER A strange game from the 1sts, clearly the better side and moving into a 2-0 lead by half-time without taking all their chances.
EBOG 6 Leyton County Old Boys 2
(from EBOG Newslettr0 Then the usual faltering nervous second half with Leyton managing to scramble unexpected-ly back to level terms.
Extra time and the thought that if EBOG were fading, how are they going to cope with an extra half hour‘s football?
Little happened in the first 15 minutes but in the final session Leyton were ripped apart in a manner that should have come earlier. At least this shows that EBOG does have the stamina.
This puts them through to another winnable tie against Economicals or IBIS. In the meantime League results elsewhere have pushed the 1sts to the bottom of Division 1 so they need to use this result as a launching pad to better form.
Economicals 1 Ibis 0

Having enjoyed a reasonable amount of suc-cess in this fixture over the past few years we made the short journey to Owens in good spirits this week. Rob and Dec were missing but there was a welcome return for Paddy and the Hill had a strong looking 13. Owens are a very different team from previous years with a new captain who has managed to coax a few ex-1st team players out of retire-ment to join him in his hunt for trophies. Bar an opening day defeat at Nottsborough, they have started well and have invested wisely in some very pretty tracksuits and natty (real footballer) hairstyles. The opening exchanges were tight and ill-tempered and while it soon became clear that the Hill had the greater qual-ity when they got the ball down and played, Owen‘s were keener to win the ball and they put in an effective and combative performance in the first half. Both sides has good chances, the best of which fell to Rui who on another day may well have had a hat-trick. However it was Owens who drew first blood when their centre forward (ably assisted by being 2 yards closer to our goal than any defender) raced clear, rounded Harry and after some time slot-
ted the ball into an empty net. One nil down at half time without being at our best was not a disaster, no indeed, we saved that for the first minute of the second half - good delivery from a corner found its way to the back post where, with a little help from the hand of God one of the Owens boys bobbled it in. When you are not playing well against a good side (and Owens are a good side this year) you need a little luck and to be two down to an offside and a handball is a little irksome. Their third goal was well worked, the only posi-tive being that it galvanised us into action and finally served to give us the kick up the ba-hooky that we needed. Nathan came on for Rui and immediately made a difference, when he is in this mood he can be impossible to play against, we started to enjoy some possession and penetration, we upped the work rate and with nothing to lose came out fighting. Finally we began to threaten the home sides goal. This pressure told as Ben Turner kept up his outstanding start to the season (that‘s 16 in [continued on page 21]

well you have done in the previous 89, if you haven't taken your chances you need to make sure you keep concentrating right up until the final whistle if you are to get what you de-serve.
The day started with the usual "Where's Julio?" question. Only this time he had the kit... To cut a long story short, he hadn't read the email properly and didn't realise the kick-off was early due to the clocks changing and it being a cup game. A few words in the ears of the ref and the oppo negotiated us a few extra minutes and we got out on the pitch and man-aged a decent warm-up.
As in recent weeks, we started well. We were working hard upfront, creating half chances and putting them on the back foot, whilst the midfield were breaking things up and spreading the play wide where we are at our most dan-gerous. Ben Wicks almost doubled his seasons goal tally with a rasping left foot effort from 25 yards that hit the bar and Connor and Andy Matthews were causing havoc down the right. Dan was having no luck in front of goal. He was up against a pretty strong centre half but was more than holding his own, but didn't get many clear cut chances. At the back we were dealing with their nippy striker well and their long channel balls rarely caused us problems. There only real threat was the long throw ins from their left back, but we managed to get something on most of them, or the ref blew up for a foul or two to bail us out.
But for all our efforts, we went in at half time 0-0. More of the same was needed in the se-cond half but we needed to take any chances that came our way.
The second half started much as the first had ended, but gradually Economicals managed to work themselves into the game. The throw-ins continued to cause problems, but as the game got stretched they started to cause us more problems on the break. I made a couple of saves and they hit the post after a spot of ball watching. Benji and Connor were continuing to cause problems but we may have been guilty of not shooting early enough, or not picking out the right pass at the right times. Decision making in the final third probably wasn't what it needed to be.
So, just after the ref announced that extra time would be 8 minutes each way due to the late kick-off, we decided not to inconvenience anyone any longer and switched off at a corner that the ref told was going to be the last action of the game. The ball was swung to the around the penalty spot where it was met by there player to head back across goal. Andy got a foot to it on the line but could only help it into the roof of the net. Gutted. Our first half
performance deserved a victory, and we matched them in the second half. But if you don't take your chances and switch off at vital moments you are going to end up disappoint-ed. Lets not let it happen again. The silver lin-ing to this is that it was a cup game so our league form isn't affected, but winning is a habit we have been enjoying.
In the changing rooms, we drowned our sor-rows with beer and champagne that Dan had kindly provided, and then most of us went out into town for the pre-planned social. Headline events of the night include Tim dropping his second pint and Chadders not being able to come out because he had to go to a fire work display in Battle, near Hastings, in Kent. How was it Chadders?
HSBC 3 Old Thorntonians 6 (from Old Thorntonians website) With OT‘s sitting impressively on top of senior 2, it was time for Super Al‘s blue and black army to take a break from the league cam-paign and turn their attentions to one of the numerous cup competitions entered this sea-son. Missing only Tony Dolan, who was called into filming at the last moment, OT‘s arrived at the superb HSBC sports ground full of confi-dence. By the way if you are interested in watching T-Bone on the box I‘m told ―the only way is Essex‖ airs on ITV2 most Monday nights.
When you think of HSBC you probably think of credit cards, mortgages and greasy long haired banker types (George pre-haircut, perhaps….) However the banks football team was more like your local cash converters…… obnoxious, dirty and liable to rob you given half the chance…so the boys knew they were in for a battle from the get go.
OT‘s opened the scoring through a very unusu-al, but most welcome, source. Paul ―colesy‖ Cole the mid-field destroyer, was actually 66-1 with the bookies to open the scoring, to put this in context Osric ―offside‖ Powell was 33-1 and wasn‘t even playing. To describe the goal I will ask you, dear reader, to cast your mind back to Eric Cantona‘s sublime, deft, glorious chip in the FA cup many years ago…to clarify…Paul Cole‘s goal was nothing like that! Being generous this reporter would say it was miss hit cross which flouted past the stranded HSBC keeper and nestled in the far corner to the amazement of everyone on the pitch. The goal clearly went to the bearded Taliban interna-tional‘s head as he was later overheard in the bar claiming he could take David Haye in a fight……now that is something I would pay money to see.
One quickly became two when Cole‘s partner in
Season 2010-2011 Page Nineteen
crime, Mark ―Cattermole‖ Rowntree, beat the keeper to a Sims corner and powered a bullet header into the roof of the net to silence the home fans. Boro looked like the proverbial kid at Christmas after scoring, almost as happy as when he watches the Matt Cardle audition tape every Sunday morning, bless his little cotton socks……
The home side were reeling at this point and it wasn‘t long before top scorer Luke Fry got in on the act. Hyde drew gasps from the spectators (genuinely , I‘m not making that up) on the sideline with a cheeky nutmeg on his marker close to the goal line before squaring for Fry to head home for the visitors third. Cole tried to claim the nutmeg was somewhat fortuitous (that mean‘s lucky, George) but honestly who is going to believe a man who thinks they can take on the Hayemaker….behave son…
Unfortunately a three nil half time advantage was quickly reduced to 3-2 after a fired up HSBC team seized the initiative and scored two pretty scrappy goals just after the break. How-ever the back four of Chris, Deji, Forbsey and Lundie, playing with a black armband in memory of OT‘s first official mascot, quickly re-asserted their defensive dominance and stead-ied the OT‘s ship. This allowed Humphreys charges to do what they do best, score goals, and the fleet footed Sims made it 4-2 with a close range tap in, after more impressive work from Cole who was clearly still buzzing off his pre-match porridge.
Foxy was putting in a tremendous shift up front and his persistence was rewarded when he drew the keeper into a needless foul to gift the T‘s a penalty. Having missed the last three pens it‘s fair to say the Thorns have a few issues when it comes to spot kicks but never fear….. cometh the hour cometh the man… as Deji con-fidently stepped forward and hit a penalty which resembled the HSBC centre midfielder…..f*cking ugly….but it sent the keeper the wrong way and (hopefully) ended our penalty hoodoo once and for all.
There was still time for the ref to award the home team a very questionable pen (a high foot apparently…..about 12 inches off the floor) which the HSBC striker confidently slotted away (fancy taking our pens mate?!) To settle the contest, and shut up the increasingly aggressive and desperate home team, Luke Dyges added a 6th with a real touch of finesse. Cole played in the youthful winger and he completely sold both defender and keeper with a classic dummy be-fore sliding the ball home. I‘ve said it before and I will say it again, all aboard the show boat……
There were a few handbags at the final whistle which I think had something to do with the Gaf-fa and some sort of mortgage re-payment issue, but it failed to de-track from another top perfor-mance from the OT‘s who stretched their un-
beaten run to 7 games. Hyde was given man of the match but to be fair there wasn‘t a stand out player as once again everyone to a man put in a great 90 mins.
It has to be said of the oppo that you can have all the facilities, the kit and the pink changing rooms you want but money can‘t buy class….or a spot in the second round apparently… so ta ta boys, good luck in your relegation battle……thank you and good night.

Norsemen 3 Hale End Athletic 1
(from Hale End Athleti website) Last weekend the 1sts faced a tricky fixture against SAL division 2 leaders Norseman in the AFA Senior Cup. Having beating them 5-0 in our previous meeting the home side was out for revenge. With James Husher unavailable for the game Manager Simon Gallagher was back in goal. The rest of the team remained the same after the victory last weekend at old Ignatians.
The game started at a high tempo and it showed why Norseman is top of their division, they played some quick attractive football mak-ing it hard for us to get on the ball. Our midfield duo of Danny Johnson and Luke Hemmings was working very hard to get us a foothold in the game.
When they did Luke‘s distribution was very good, he picked out Alex on the wing on a num-ber of occasions which led to a couple of excel-lent crosses that we came close to converting into goals. At this stage we did put the home team under pressure and give them something to think about. The game was perfectly poised with both teams having chances but we were having a good spell and scored the opener through Louis Atkins. The home team keeper (could have been Fabianski) flapped at a cross and Louis tapped in from close range for his third goal of the season. Our goal maybe not totally deserved but we were working hard and Louis‘s pace was giving their back line problems. We could have had a second soon after, both Curtis and Danny Johnson went close, that would have seen us taking a comfortable two nil lead into the break. In between Norseman had a few corners and free kick but we managed to keep them out and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half it was clear that the home team had no intentions of going out of this cup without a fight, they went up a gear and began to take control of the game. Their passing and movement was quicker and they attacked in numbers. We seemed to take our foot off the gas which allowed the home team to find space and pass the ball about and start creating some chances. We were defending fairly well and Simon in goal had not really been tested up

until this point. Eventually the pressure took its toll, we lost concentration and Norseman equal-ised through a very well taken goal.
AT 1-1 the momentum was now all with the home team and we did not look like threatening their goal. Norseman continued to dominate possession and it was not long before they got their reward albeit through a very sloppy goal to concede. A long free kick was swung to our back post and everyone stood still while their little striker drifted in behind our defence un-marked to slot the ball home to give the home side the lead. We then made some changes, Nick Jennings and Danny Andrews coming on to try and get us back in the game. With time run-ning out it seemed that we were heading out of the biggest cup competition that we would face this season. With us now chasing the game and reverting to a more attacking formation the game became more open and it was inevitable that the home team grabbed a 3rd late in the game. The final score finished 3-1.
We had a good first half but lost our concentra-tion in the second half. Back to the league next week against Wood Green Old Boys a very win-nable fixture. We need to put this result behind us and play the football we know that we can play in order to secure all 3 points and keep us in the promotion race.
Civil Service 4 Alexandra Park 0
―Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.‖– Helen Keller Once again we were up against a well organ-ised well disciplined and drilled Civil Service team that took their chances and punished us.
This was always going to be an up hill task es-pecially after having a week with no match in between the Civil service games, We needed to feel confident about ourselves and about the way we play, I was pleased that we managed to hold things together for 35 minutes before the Civil team struck it was a well taken goal that our keeper had no chance of stopping, their movement around the pitch was crisp and showed that this team knew how to exploit a very wide pitch while we struggled although employing two wide players, we just could not get the ball wide quickly enough or provide adequate support for Ozan up front.
This was disappointing as prior to the game we spoke about roles and tasks as a team and indi-vidually, with everyone in a good frame of mind to compete and do well.
We had conjured up one chance before The Civil struck again, a flash of a strike by Alex Patterson that went inches wide; I believe a goal would have made a big difference to the teams mentally and confidence.
With a minutes to go before the end of the first half the Civil Service struck again to score their second goal, defensively it was a weak clear-
ance and lack of concentration that lead to the goal. We went in disappointed but not despond-ent.
Much of the second saw the Alexandra team take the game to the Civil service but we strug-gled to get bodies forward and found it harder to breakdown a very strong defence, Civil struck home again with what I must say a very well taken goal, that our keeper Martin Smith just could not reach, I must say Martin put in a good performance despite the goals and was carrying a foot injury, it would have surely had have been more if it was not for him. 3 – 0 down and I was pleased that the team contin-ued to battle and to work hard, things were just not working out for us but they stuck to the task and tried where I believe many would have folded, with a few minutes to go the Civil scored their fourth goal against a battle weary Alexandra team.
At half time we talked about giving it all for the second half which I believed the team did, we as I said before were up against a very good team and I believe we can take valuable les-sons from this and the previous game against them for our home game later in the season and our next game.
Our main focus will now be back on the league looking to gain some consistency in our play, we have a mammoth task ahead of us. I am confident in the players and that they all have a desire to play well and play for the team what-ever role it involves, unity is important as it is the bond that binds a successful team togeth-er.
My man of the match goes to Sly for an out-standing performance he was a rock in the cen-tre of the park his tireless work and commit-ment was an example to all around.
We now face a massive game against a Weir-side Rangers team that are third in the table at the moment and look to play well and get a result. BBB

Merton 1 Old Salesians 2 (from Merton website) In the end we lost a very good, competitive cup tie down at the Hood. Having had some rather strange games lately where we have conceded goals rather freely it was good to get back to a solid defensive performance against a very good Old Salesians side.
Pretty much from the start Old Salesians got on top and moved the ball around well and pegged us back. We had the odd chance on the break and Tills went close with a crafty free kick that was well saved by their keeper. They went ahead on the half hour with a great run down the wing good cross and terrific finish for a very
Season 2010-2011 Page Twenty One
good goal. Their continued pressure could easi-ly have brought them more goals but we de-fended resolutely and held out until half time, still in the game.
Clappers gave a very measured team talk at half time and the lads responded particularly well in the second half in not giving the ball away so cheaply as we had done in the first half.
We played a lot better and created some chanc-es. Al G and Tills in Midfield were winning a lot of ball and using it well, bringing our forwards and wings into the game going forward. We had chances but equalised on the hour when Old Sals failed to clear a corner and Jase lashed it home.
We continued to press forward and to my bi-ased eyes looked the most likely to score. A couple of corners were headed one and Old Sals headed one off the line from a particularly good header from Frenchy. A flowing move out of defence saw Shauno crossing and Lofty shooting narrowly wide. Of course Old Sals were always dangerous breaking fast and mov-ing and running purposefully.
Extra time saw the game change yet again with Old Sals dominating and it was us looking dan-gerous on the break whilst our defence soaked up the pressure, And so when it looked like the game would be decided on penalties more pres-sure from Old Sals, and very tired players made mistakes and failed to clear the ball which end-ed up in our net.
I took Old Sals wild celebrations as a tribute to us for such a determined performance and a natural reaction to winning a very good closely fought game. But even then with only seconds on the clock we managed to get into their box and have three good cracks at goal which were heroically blocked. Steve Redfern (Ref) con-trolled the game really well. It could have got a bit fruity but people just played on and he dealt with it all fairly and firmly. I was proud of the way we performed, everyone put in a really good shift, and we can hold our heads high for our return visit to their ground in a fortnight for a Surrey Senior Cup match.
9 so far) by netting a quick fire double, firstly with a neat flick from Nathan‘s right foot cross and then an even better finish across his body from another ball from the right, 3-2 and game on with near 30 minutes to go.
There then followed about 20 minutes of Hill pressure, which to their credit Owens dealt with, using their 5 man back line to good ef-fect, Hill were largely restricted to half chances as we resorted to longer balls which their 3-big centre halves loved. Whether it was a little naivety or just lack of fitness I am not sure but in the later stages of the game, Hill seemed to lose a yard of sharp-ness. This resulted in some late and aggres-sive challenges from both sides, a lack of disci-pline from the away side and some very clever gamesmanship from Owen's number 8, who goes down like a Hampstead Heath regu-lar. The kid is a very good footballer who when he learns some humility may well turn out to be a player worth watching out for. Until that time however he will remain an effeminate eejit, who is angry with others for his virgin status and who is likely to continue
his days desperately searching for somebody to annoy.
With both subs made and Hill over committing to try and get the elusive equaliser, gaps were bound to appear and to the delight of their baying home fans (who had made their way over from watching their first team get dumped out the AFA Cup). Owens caught us out twice in the final minutes to score further goals on the counter.
There is no doubt Owens have improved from previous years and the first team players who have come down have added a lot to their team. They are playing with belief and mo-mentum, whilst 5-2 wasn‘t a fair reflection on the game, they worked hard for their victory and caught Hill on a very bad day defensive-ly. However, the season is long and their cele-brations at the final whistle and in the dressing room post match maybe a little premature for the first week in November. We look forward to the return game later in the season.

Carshalton 3 Winchmore Hill 4
Southern Amateur League
Minor Section Division One
Saturday 6 November
The 4s travelled to Carshalton in good form after our stunning comeback from 2:0 down to win 4:2 against reigning champions Notts-borough.
Though as always when the date appears for that lovely trip away day to sunny Hackbridge, there are always people who consult their so-cial diaries to see what alternative offers are on before they commit themselves to this clas-sic fixture. Therefore I must say thanks for the 11 including myself who made the trip and came away with all 3 points.
The Hill started slowly on a muddy, leafy pitch with flies all around the place. The 4s found themselves 1:0 down after 5 minutes due to a cross cum shot which sailed over the static keeper Quinn, though the midfield should have dealt better with the through ball but these things happen and we quickly put it behind us. Within 10 minutes after conceding, the 4s were 2:1 up thanks to good individual goal from Reece Wilson and a first time volley from outside the box by Adam Modo.
We started playing lovely football on a terrible pitch and should at least have been 4:1 up when Carshalton equalised from a volley which Quinn saved but spilled it out of his hands onto the post and then watched it trickle over the line much to the delight of the Carshalton team. Soon after it was 3:2 to Carshalton and
then the whistle for half time came and it was time for the 4s to regroup and focus on put-ting things right and winning this game.
The 2nd half started well for the 4s and we soon equalised from a Reece Wilson shot and then a few minutes later we took the lead for the 2nd time as Charlie Kamper finished off a good move by slamming the ball in to the net and finishing off with his trademark celebration so I was told (putting the ball down by the corner flag). Charles Matthews made it 5:3 after a goal mouth scramble and Carshalton all but new then that the game was over. As the full time whistle blew the Carshalton team were very quiet and the 4s new we had won a hard but scrappy game.
Not the best of games but a spirited fight back by the 4s has shown that after the notts result this team will definitely be challenging for the League. I would just like to say well done to Charlie on his 4th team debut.

Winchmore Hill 2 Bank of England 1 AFA Junior Novets Cup
Saturday 6 November
In a week that we found out who the lucky
mascots are for the Olympics in 2012 it was
also confirmed to the 9s who their lucky mas-
cot is too, the bell, the talisman was to be
included as a substitute.
The game started, after a 10 minute delay,
with Bank of England kicking into the sun and
only starting with 10 men as 2 of their number
were late, the mighty Hill made the more im-
pressive start taking advantage of their extra
player testing the full backs fitness, pace and
resilience on both sides of the pitch but just
failing to find the killer touch that was a goal.
Bank of England had decided to adapt the cur-
rent theory about wingers playing on the flanks
opposite to their best foot and continued this
into their back line with their full backs contin-
ually taking the ball into the pitch leaving more
room for the Hill wingers to exploit,
After 15 minutes BoE were up to their full
numbers and got into the game more but 10
minutes later, after another foraging run by
Barrell, the ball was put out for a corner, the
resultant corner was whipped in and flicked on
by our towering central midfield general Ed
Munoz who rose like a salmon and the ball
deviated off of the pristine new hair to our
equally towering left winger Dennie Morris
whose frame stole in front of the defender,
mainly because it was nearer the ground than
his, and hooked the ball in past a despairing
keeper for 1-0. The rest of the half came and
went with BoE not really getting past the mid-
field and when they did the pressure being
mopped up by the majestic defensive 4 of
Vince, Ed, Alex and Oli.
In the second half after some re-organisation
BoE came back into the game slightly more but
after losing their left back to a hamstring inju-
ry, it was inevitable after he had been turned
inside out, wrong way round so often that he
would require some form of physiotherapy, the
Hill scored their second Barrell again going up
the right cutting the ball in to the middle for an
on rushing Prior to hammer home for 2-0,
Ten minutes later after a period of domination,
which is always enjoyed by Najada, by the Hill
BoE then scored against the run of play their
sub taking his chance from a loose ball a snap
shot volley agonisingly evaded Max in Goal.
The skipper then changed things up Darryl
having taken his 3rd or 4th head shot of the
match was taken off and replaced by Salt,
BoE pushed for the equaliser but it never
seemed to materialise in chances, more subs
were made to bring on fresh legs, then in the
last minutes with what was surely going to be
their last chance BoE sent a curling free kick
from the edge of the area goal wards only to
be denied by Max with an outstanding save
and moments later the final whistle rang out.
A great game had by all and with the team
spirit, desire, and fight shown during this en-
counter the 9s look like a force to be reckoned
with and their 5 week unbeaten record to be
stretched it is onward and upward.
