A Child’s Garden of Dreams (1981) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . David Maslanka No. 1. There is a desert on the (1943-2017) moon where the dreamer sinks so deeply into the ground that she reaches hell. No. 2. A drunken woman falls into the water and comes out renewed and sober. No. 3. A horde of small animals frightens the dreamer. The animals increase to a size, tremendous and one of them devours the little girl. No. 4. A drop of water is seen as it appears when looked at through a microscope. The girl sees that the drop is full of tree branches. This portrays the origin of the world. No. 5. An ascent into heaven where pagan dances are being; celebrated and a descent into hell where angels are doing good deeds.

Rodney Dorsey is professor of music (bands) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He was previously director of bands and conductor of the Wind Ensemble at the University of Oregon. Prior to that, he was associate director of bands at the University of Michigan, where he conducted the Concert Band and Michigan Youth Band and taught undergraduate conducting. He served previously on the faculties

of DePaul and Northwestern universities, and gained extensive experience teaching in the public schools of Florida and Georgia. Dorsey studied conducting with James Croft, John P. Paynter, and Mallory Thompson. He was a clarinet student of Fred Ormand and Frank Kowalsky. Ensembles under Dorsey’s direction have performed at several state and national events, including the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Regional Conference and the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival. His numerous professional memberships include the CBDNA, National Association for Music Education, Midwest Clinic board of directors, and the American Bandmasters Association.

Jane Dutton is associate professor of voice at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. An Indiana native, she has sung in many of the top opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, English National Opera (London), Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona, Spain), and New York City Opera—first as a mezzo-soprano and now as a dramatic soprano. Dutton made her

European opera debut at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre Del Liceu and was reengaged by the theater for 10 seasons. She has sung several seasons at London’s English National Opera, most recently appearing as Kundry in Parsifal. That appearance marked the start of her career as a Wagnerian soprano, and she has since sung many of the major Wagnerian roles in the United States, Germany, and Hong Kong. In the United States, she has sung Jordan Baker in John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby and Stephano in Roméo et Juliette, as well as numerous other roles for the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to her appearances in major U.S. opera houses, she has sung with more than 25 U.S. regional opera houses, in more than 30 different major roles. Dutton’s orchestral work highlights include appearances with the New York Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, RTE National Symphony (Ireland), Prague Radio Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Houston Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, and the Korean Broadcast Symphony at the United Nations General Assembly. She has recorded under the Chandos and Albany Records labels. She has been awarded prizes in many competitions, including Placido Domingo’s Operalia. She earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Indiana University, where she studied with famed Wagnerian Margaret Harshaw. Dutton earned an Artist Diploma from Yale University.

Jason H. Nam is assistant professor of music (bands) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he directs the Concert Band and teaches undergraduate courses in instrumental conducting, administration of school bands, and wind band repertoire. Nam earned a Doctor of Music in Wind Conducting degree from the Jacobs School, where he studied with Stephen W. Pratt. He earned an M.M. in Conducting and a B.M. in

Music Education from the University of Redlands, where he studied with Eddie R. Smith.

Prior to his graduate degree work, he served as lecturer in the Department of Music at California State University San Bernardino and as director of bands at La Colina Junior High School and San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California. Nam has served as a faculty member and assistant director of the IU Summer Music Clinic, and he was recently appointed resident music director of the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble. Nam keeps a busy schedule as conductor, adjudicator, and clinician across the United States. As a trumpet player, he has freelanced and performed with numerous orchestras, chamber ensembles, and jazz ensembles in California, including with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. He was a national finalist for The American Prize in Conducting (Band/Wind Ensemble division) in 2017. Nam’s research interests include the music of William Bolcom, the historical development of wind band repertoire in the twentieth century, and rehearsal methodologies for conductors. His paper “The Mid-Twentieth Century Renaissance and the American Symphony for Band” appears in the Journal of the National Band Association. He recently completed a new band transcription of William Bolcom’s Inventing Flight. Nam holds professional memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Conductor’s Guild, Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, Indiana Music Education Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society, and is a proud member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity of America. He lives in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife, Melissa, and son, Davis.
