Wind Power Station
A wind power station is group of wind turbines in the
same location used to produce electric power
Wind energy source of renewable power which come
from air current flowing across the earth surface
Wind energy one of the fastest growing sources of new
electricity generation in the world to day
Elements of power station
OPERATIONS
Blades :Blades “Catch” the wind and use it to rotate the low speedshaft & convert kinetic energy to mechanical energy
Gear box :Gear box connect low- speed shaft to high-speed shaftand increase speed “60 rpm-1800 rpm” and use it to
rotate Generator
Bearing : Bearing provide the smooth rotation
Generator : Generator convert mechanical energy to electrical energy
Transformer (Step up) :
transformer develops the voltage from generator out put voltage
Tower : support the structure of the turbine
Controller : control speed of turbine
Efficiency
A modern turbine has a maximum capacity of around
2000KW or 2MW
A 2MW wind turbine will generate around 30% of
its maximum theoretical capacity resulting in 5256
MWh generated per turbine per year
Turbine can generate 0.5MW -2.5MW
Advantages of Wind Power
Environmental
Economic Development
Fuel Diversity & Conservation
Cost Stability
Environmental Benefits
No air pollution
No greenhouse gasses
Does not pollute water with mercury
No water needed for operations
Economic Development Benefits
Expanding Wind Power development brings jobs to
rural communities
Increased tax revenue
Purchase of goods & services
Fuel Diversity Benefits
Domestic energy source
Inexhaustible supply
Small, dispersed design
Disadvantages
Wind speed variable & unreliable
Kill Birds & Bats
Wind turbine produce large amount of noise pollution
Land use
Future of wind power station
The use of increasingly sophisticated flow
modeling techniques;
Further validation of wake models;
The use of remote sensing techniques to
measure wind speed;
Improved estimates of ‘loss factors’
More sophisticated approaches to uncertainty
analysis.
