Why retrofit ?

• Reduced income due to reduced energy generation caused by de-rated performance and reduced uptime.

• Increased service cost due to increased failure rate caused by wear and tear, overload, misalignment, among others.

• End of life causing limited access to spare parts resulting in increased cost and increased down time.

• Reduce tariffs combined with new grid code requirements force Owner to invest in a midlife upgrade with focus on improved performance and life extension.

What are the pains ?

What retrofit solutions do we offer ?

• Onsite retrofit • Cost optimized solution/minimum changes “Plug & Play”• Controller upgrade only with minimum of sensor upgrade

• Renew of existing control cabinets• Cabinet redesign with new selected LV components• Controller upgrade• Customized sensor upgrade package

• New control cabinets• Complete upgraded solution targeting refurbished turbines• Cabinet design and complete drawings for localized

production• Controller upgrade• Customized sensor package upgrade.

Retrofit concepts for any turbine type and O&M demand

Page 6: Wind turbine retrofit

What is the problem ?

Does this look familiar??

• One owner spend 298.900 EUR in VRCC repair of 136 out of 426 Vestas V47 in 2015

• Investigations shows that in many sites the V47 is only operating at rated power in 2-3 % of the operating time

• DEIF is offering a solution where it is possible to reduce the cost of repairing or investing in expensive refurbishing units of RCC/VRCC

Reducing VRCC / RCC cost on Vestas V42 / V44 / V47

Page 7: Wind turbine retrofit

What is the cost ?

Business as usually• VRCC: MTBF 3 years• VRCC: Avg. Full repair cost -5.520 EUR• COTAS: New cost -10.800 EUR

Total cost: -27.360 EUR

Upgrade to AWC 500• New AWC 500 controller: 12.500 EUR• Finans model: 15% down payment / 2.500

EUR• Increase in AEP: 2,5% • Total cost savning: 27.360 EUR

Improved business: 28.860 EUR

Page 8: Wind turbine retrofit

How do we increase the AEP ?

• 9 x cable twist stop with original yaw strategy• 1 x cable twist stop with intelligent yaw strategy• Reducing downtime with 8 hours / turbine / year• +74.000 kWh / year • @ 25 turbines V47

Less stops due to intelligent yaw: Real site data case

• Controller HW replacement• Less stops due to intelligent yaw and

Cable twist• High Wind Ride Through• Pitch failure reduction• VRCC major failures (breakdowns)• VRCC minor failures (Coms)• General stops due to high temperature

limitations• Stops related to fixed threshold values • Other not defined stops

By Improving availability..

Page 9: Wind turbine retrofit

What have we done ?

4 % increased AEP, Improved low and medium wind performance.

• Complete re-engineered control panels exchanging original controllers in MD series Repower design

• Pitch controller retrofitted from L&B• Complete SCADA and Park Power Control

Case 1: Complete retrofit of WTG

One of DEIF’s core competences is electrical Pitch systems.

• MOOG and SSB pitch drive replacements are available • New improved technology including functional safety

support • Newly installed 2.1 MW system

Case 2: MW Electric pitch retrofit

What is the result ?

• Access to spare parts is limited and second hand repairs

• Low tariffs which lead to focusing on improving the existing fleet

• Expensive spare parts from the OEM

• Closed SCADA and asset management interface

• Extended turbine lifetime• Refurbished VRCC/RCC modules• Less service cost• Higher availability => higher revenue• New Management system (SCADA)

interface• Automatic reset of alarms• Control of turbine parameters• New intelligent power control

• Reducing power output instead of stopping

• Maximum payback time < 3 year on investments

• Solutions are aimed to have 1:1 replacements either directly or using prepared mounting kits.

• 5 years standard warranty. Up to 10 year warranty on request and with a fixed price

• Access to a full open turbine information mapping

• Direct cost savings on own “OEM” spare parts supply and clear supply channel.
