Katutura
Bustling with vivid social culture, Katutura is a unique experience that must simply be visited. It is a vibrant suburb, where poverty and wealth shake hands and it is the oldest township in Windhoek that exists on the edge of Windhoek’s north-western suburbs. In 1912, during the days of the South African mandate, the Windhoek Town Council set aside two locations for black Africans who were working in the city: the Main Location, which was to the west of the city centre and Klein Windhoek to the east. In 1913, people were forcibly relocated to these areas, which became communal areas of haphazard settlement.
OLD LOCATIONIn the 1950’s, the Windhoek Town Council decided to consolidate all location residents into a single settlement north west of the city centre. However, there was strong opposition to the move, and in early December 1959, a group of Herero women launched a protest march against the city government. On 10 December 1959, unrest escalated into a confrontation with the police. Frightened, the approximately 4 000 residents of the main location moved to the new settlement. The new settlement was ultimately named Katutura, which is Herero for “The Place We Do Not Want To Settle”.Despite the South African colonial influence the people of present day Katutura would rather that the name be changed to Matututa, which means “The Place where we want to stay”.
HABITAT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (HRDC)The HRDC is a sustainable and environmentally friendly centre that houses office space, a multi-purpose lecture hall, a library, kitchen, an exhibition hall and a large courtyard. The aim of the centre is to change attitudes towards building practices and make people think differently about what is useless and what is useful in terms of building material. The HRDC was thus founded with a mandate to establish a research, resource and training centre focusing on sustainable housing and applying building practices relevant to Namibia as they strive literally to build the nation.
The following materials used throughout the centre; old glass bottles, wood from prosopes trees, old tyres as well as materials from dilapidated and destroyed buildings. Both entrance gates are made of discarded materials. Old wheelbarrows and spades that could have been left to rust away on the building site were sliced together to create an interesting gate to the property. The gate to the centre is a patchwork of soda cans, row after row of green, orange, red and purple cans.
INFORMAL MARKETSExperience real Africa by strolling through the colourful and busy informal markets spread around Katutura. Soweto Market in Independence Avenue offers a selection of hairdressers & hair braiders, traditional dress tailors, shoemakers, TV repairmen, fat cakes, and young locals playing pool while music blares out nearby. Oshetu Market (previously Single Quarters Market) in Shanghai Street provides a selection of traditional dresses and other handmade items. Traditional food such as dried ombidi (Owambo spinach), fresh sugar cane from northern Namibia (seasonal), Mahangu (millet) and maize meal, Mopane worms (a delicacy worth a try), eembe (sweet dried berries), dried meat and fish are on sale. To fill the hungry is the mouth watering kapana (braaied or barbecued meat) which sells for N$1.00 a piece and clients can season it themselves with a salt, chilli and spices mix.
HANDMADE CRAFTSÔasa Taradi meaning “busy women” in Nama / Damara is a needlework workshop that started in 1989 as a project of the Namibia Red Cross Society, with assistance from the Canadian Red Cross. In 1993 about twenty-five women most of them single mothers decided to set up an independent trust with the aim to become self-supporting. Ôasa Taradi produce quality hand embroidered pillowcases, shower curtains, table and bed linen according to personal taste. Their products are for sale at the Namibia Craft Centre. On the edge of Goreangab Dam, is Penduka, which means “wake up” in Oshiwambo

Historical MonumentsALTE FESTE – Robert Mugabe AvenueOne of the oldest buildings in Windhoek with its corner stone laid in 1890. The Alte Feste served as military headquarters in 1915 and then as a hostel for the Windhoek High School in 1935. It now houses the state museum, where the historic Independence Collection reflecting events leading up to the independence of Namibia can be seen. It was declared a National Monument in 1957.
CASTLESAs you leave Klein Windhoek there are three castles on your left. The most visible is Schwerinsburg, which was built in 1891. Later it was a restaurant before becoming a private home. Today it is the residence of the Italian Ambassador to Namibia. Sanderburg is the smallest of the three, whilst Heinitzburg is the only public one. Built in 1914, the Heinitzburg is now a hotel.
CHRISTUS KIRCHE – Robert Mugabe AvenueThe Chistus Kirche was designed by Gottlieb Redecker and was officially consecrated in 1910. It is the oldest Evangelical Lutheran church in Namibia. The design of the church is based on the idea of a basilica. It was built in the neo-Romanic style, but also shows the influence of art nouveau. The Christus Kirche was proclaimed a National Monument on 29 November 1974.
ELISABETH HOUSE – Polytechnic of Namibia, Storch StreetIn the Elisabeth House, Gottlieb Redecker & Wilhelm (Willie) Sander created an architectural symbiosis of two different buildings and combined them into one complex. This structure is unique in Namibia. The official gazette proclaiming the building as a national monument provides the following background: “The Elisabeth House was erected on the initiative of the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft (German Colonial Company) as maternity home and was up to and including 1981 used as such. The Women’s Association of the Red Cross for Germans Overseas administered the maternity ward and between 1908 and 1981, 12 669 babies were born in this ward.” The building, which was erected in 1907 - 8 was named after Duchess Elisabeth zu Mecklenburg, wife of the President of the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft. The Elisabeth House was officially proclaimed a National Monument on 15 May 1986.
GIBEON METEORITES – Post Street MallThe 600 million years old 30 Gibeon Meteorites are mounted on steel columns in Post Street Mall. Between 1911 & 1913, Dr. Paul Range, the State Geologists for the Government of German SWA, collected 37 meteor fragments in the Gibeon area. Their weight ranged between 195-506 kg. Two were stolen and four were donated to various institutions for research purposes. Since the installation of the meteorite fountain, another meteorite has disappeared. All pieces are thought to be part of one large ore, with a mass of over 17 tonnes, which fragmented long before it entered the atmosphere. The Meteorites were proclaimed a National Monument on 15 February 1950.
HEROES ACRE - About 5km south of Windhoek on the road to RehobothHeroes Acre is a memorial, constructed in 2002, in recognition and remembrance of the extraordinary sons and daughters, who contributed immensely to the fight for Namibia’s Independence, freedom and democracy. Heroes Acre is a place dedicated for people to honour, pay homage to and respect the spirits of the fallen heroes and heroines, whose blood waters Namibia’s freedom.

KUDU STATUE - c/o Independence Avenue & John Meinert StreetA visiting sculptor, Professor Fritz Behn of Munich, drew a kudu in the guest book of Mrs. Olga Levinson, President of the Arts Association. “What a marvelous monument that would make” she commented. Mr. Ernst Behnsen offered to pay the total cost of the bronze sculpture. Professor Behn designed, sculpted and cast the life-size statue in Munich. The Town Council provided a suitable site and constructed a pedestal near a fountain (this was later removed) in front of the High Court in today’s Independence Avenue. The Kudu symbolises a shared passion for the beautiful abundance of the country’s wildlife, in combination with outstanding craftsmanship. This statue celebrates
a ““spirit of hope”OLD LOCATION CEMETERY – Hochland RoadTwo cemeteries served Windhoekers between 1904 & 1960: The Gammams Cemetery (1904 – 1927) and the Old Location Cemetery (1927 – 1960) The Gammams Cemetery dates from the time of the Herero rebellion of 1904. Some members of the Herero community, who were court-martialled and executed for their participation in the rebellion, were buried in this cemetery. The first identifiable grave from this period is that of Zacharias Kukuri, buried on 18 April 1905. Ehrenfried Nganjako was the last person to be buried at the Gammams cemetery, namely on 4 November 1926. It fell into disuse after that but was only officially closed on 1 December 1964. By August 1923,
the Municipality had resolved that a new site at the western side of the Gammams River was to be used to extend the existing cemetery. This site was directly opposite the Gammams Cemetery. The extension is known today as the Old Location Cemetery because it bordered the reserve for black residents of Windhoek under apartheid rule. The Old Location Cemetery was provisionally proclaimed a national monument on 9 December 1987. Its proclamation as such lapsed on 8 December 1992 and it’s currently being prepared.
OLD WINDHOEK CEMETERY – Robert Mugabe AvenueThis is the oldest cemetery in Windhoek; it consists of two sections, situated on either side of Robert Mugabe Avenue. The eastern section was used first in 1892, while the western section added in 1904 was used after that. Soldiers who died during the early Nama and Herero wars, officials of the German administration, early settlers and civilians, including a member of the Witbooi clan, lie buried in the eastern section. In the western section extension of the cemetery, a number of soldiers were buried, including Union of South Africa troops who fell during WW1. The Old Windhoek Cemetery was provisionally proclaimed a national monument on 9 December 1987; its proclamation has since lapsed.
REITER DENKMAL – Robert Mugabe AvenueThe equestrian Statue, commemorates 1 525 German officers and soldiers, 92 marine officers and soldiers and 124 civilians killed in action during the tribal rebellions against the German colonial rule (1904 – 08). The 4.5m double life-size statue depicts a typical German protection force soldier in full uniform on horseback out on patrol. The statue symbolises the idea of eventual victory after fierce fighting. While the soldier is looking in one direction, his horse is looking in another. The monument was declared a National Monument on 02 January 1969.
RELICS OF THE PREHISTORIC ELEPHANT - Zoo Park, Independence AvenueA startling archaeological site between 5 000 & 20 000 years old of an elephant kill, with bones and stone tools, was discovered in the Zoo Park. For many years the articles were exhibited in a showcase in the Zoo Park, but were removed eventually and replaced with a 2m high stone column sculpted by internationally known Namibian artist Dörte Berner. The original elephant remains and stone tools are now stored at the National Museum of Namibia. The Relics of the Prehistoric Elephant were proclaimed a national monument on 15 August 1963.
ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL – Werner List StreetIts aesthetic appearance brought about its proclamation as a national monument. The official proclamation text reads as follows: This twin tower cathedral, with its neo-Renaissance features, is of particular architectural importance. The façade of this right-angled building is particularly impressing with its high peak towers on both sides of the central part with its three arched entrances. The rustic work of brown stone is also

Government administrators, it seems, were using a lot of ink. The Legislative Assembly Hall was officially opened in May 1964 and in 1990 became the seat of the Parliament of Namibia.WAR NAMA MEMORIAL - Zoo Park, Independence AvenueThis memorial serves to honour the German soldiers and their Namibian allies who died in the 1893-1894 Nama upraising against German colonial domination. The obelisk with its gilt eagle, including the cast-iron fencing and concrete podium, is given a rating of 85 on the NIA Index as an A Class monument. The monument carries the following inscriptions in German: (“Dem Andenken der in dem Kriege gegen den Stamm der Witbooi’s in den Jahren 1893 und 94 gefallenen Helden” “In commemoration of the heroes who died during the war against Witbooi during 1893 and 1894”). The War Memorial was officially proclaimed a National Monument on 02 January 1969.
striking. The Catholic Cathedral was proclaimed a national monument on 15 June 1983.
STATUE OF CURT VON FRANCOIS - Municipal Building, c/o Independence Avenue & Sam Nujoma DriveOutside the Municipal building is the 18-foot high-bronze statue of Curt von Francois gazing down Independence Avenue. About 50m to the east from the statue on the large stairs is a black marble obelisk with the following inscription: “Curt von Francois ended here 1890 the first Compass Route survey on 18 October”, in English, Afrikaans and German. This obelisk was unveiled exactly 100 years later on 18 October 1990.

Meetings with ambianceand mood
However large or small the meeting, location is key. Your environment, formal or informal, helps set the necessary mood and ambiance for the meeting to
take place. Think about choosing a comfortable, yet stimulating environment that encourages attendees to concentrate, but beware of making it too cozy and relaxing that they’re likely to fall asleep.
When thinking about the right location, consider the meeting objectives, the length of the meeting and, of course, your budget. Decide how appropriate/necessary/important it is to hold the meeting on or off-site. For example, sometimes a neutral, off-site location is necessary for confidential, top secret discussions.
1. Local off-site meeting spaceWhen it comes to selecting an off-site location, be it a local hotel conference room, a restaurant or other meeting space, your budget will rule and determine the outcome. To play it safe, always inspect the space first-hand before finalizing any decisions. Make sure the space is the right size for the meeting. You want to avoid “maxi-sizing,” that is having a space big enough to seat 200 for a 20-person meeting. You only want to consider venues that are larger enough to handle the event you’re planning. Much will depend on the number of participants and the complexity and/or variety of the program. Will it be formal, informal or both? Do you want a rural or an urban location? Every event you plan will possibly meet different criteria, and thus have different space requirements.
2. Out-of-town off-site meeting spaceThis option is usually used for extra special meetings, such as sales meetings, as costs will inevitably be much higher. These kinds of meetings may well last for several days so you want to make sure that all necessary details are well taken care of. If you want to make it high on your colleagues’ popularity poll, consider using a resort facility, as they usually offer various enjoyable relaxation options, golf, swimming, fitness center, etc. A site visit is essential so as to avoid any unexpected surprises.
