Dear friends, The Wesleyan movement’s genius was in forming people into small groups for spiritual discernment, growth, and transformation. That is, to help each one grow in their discipleship of Jesus Christ. Becoming a follower of Jesus may happen in an instant, but it takes a lifetime to grow fully into the person that God has created each one of us to be. For others, becoming a disciple is a slow, pain-staking process that takes years to get to the starting line. Either way, it takes attention to what it means to follow Jesus, particularly for our day and time. Small groups are truly helpful in that pro-cess. Our plan as a congregation for the coming year is to emphasize our small group ministry. Sunday School classes are the base-line for our small group ministry. Classes for a variety of ages and stages are offered every Sunday morning and it is not uncommon, like last Sunday, for us to have over 100 people in Sunday School. That is exceptional—it is over 50% of our average worship attendance. As we move into the fall, I would like to encourage you to find a niche in your own Sunday School small group. Marianne Bird, our Education Chairperson, has, for several months, been highlighting one group each month in our monthly newsletter. Our website, under Ministries/Growing in Faith Min-istries, provides a brief description of each class. There are gaps, however, and some folks want to delve deeper into learning about faith and scrip-ture, but more importantly, about knowing God. For some, Sunday morning is not the best time. Therefore, we hope to expand our small group offerings for the coming year, with short-term groups, either on Sunday mornings or at alternative times during the week. In some ways, we have already begun, with the Wednesday Mornings Matter group, which meets on alternate Wednesday mornings at the Salem Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea. Watch for more information for the next thing on their agenda. Beginning this month, on September 19, a short-term Wednesday Night Bible Study will study Christopher Maricle’s The Jesus Priorities: 8 Essential Habits. In this study, we will look at where Je-sus placed his priorities. This helps us to discern how to live as a disciple in 21st century America, where to place our priorities.

Sign-ups begin on Sunday, September 2 in the breezeway or by e-mailing Pastor Doug at DougPaysour@vaumc.org. Watch for many more opportunities in the year to come. And, if you feel called to lead such a short-term small group, talk to Pastor Doug.

Communion Ministry

Our Communion Ministry Teams are making visits with our shut-ins to share with them

the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Pastor Michael is working with our volunteers for

this ministry and has a simple liturgy for their use as they make their visits. We are cur-

rently serving about 20 individuals, but we invite members of the WHUMC family to

contact us and let us know if there are others who may be interested in receiving com-

munion in their home, rehab center, nursing home, or hospital. Sometimes people may wish to receive com-

munion when they are temporarily unable to worship with us. We want to make this meaningful ministry

available to as many people as we can. You may contact the church office with the names and information or

Children’s Ministries...

September has arrived and we are getting back into our routines! So many

wonderful activities and events occurred during the summer at Windsor Hills and I

am grateful for the many lives touched. A BIG Thank You to Rene Wolfe, Dana Gregory, Lois Single-

ton, Kendall Wolfe, Lola Rodman, Mason Case, Kat Lyons, and the church for the numerous ways you

helped us during Summer Camps. I was told on more than one occasion, we are a most loving church

and the children are already looking forward to next year!!!

Our next Family Outing will be on September 23rd. We are heading downtown to visit Kids Square

while the youth and older elementary will venture upstairs to the Pinball Museum. The plan is to

leave after the 11am service and eat lunch downtown in the Market Building prior to going across the

street to enjoy Kids Square and the Pinball Museum. Make plans to join us!

Sunday School will continue to meet in Old Fellowship Hall until Sept. 2nd

Our Sunday School teachers are excited to jump into our new curriculum in the Fall which is The Bible

in One Year. Digging Into the Bible in One Year takes kids on a whirlwind journey from Genesis to

Revelation. Kids experience a relationship with God through the eyes of ordinary Bible people. Kids

will discover that they’re a lot like people God has always loved and worked through.

I am praying for each of your children as they embark on a new school year and look forward to

eating lunch with them this year.

Youth News…

Hi everyone!

For some of us school has already began or will

be starting back up, which means soon it will al-

so be time to resume our weekly youth group!

Windsor Hills United Methodist Church recognizes how important the middle and high school

years are - they are a time of challenge, change, and wonder as you (the youth) investigate who

you are in the Lord. Our goal is to help you on that journey of self-discovery.

We meet most Sunday evenings throughout the school year (6th - 12th grades) beginning Sun-

day, 8/26/18, from 5 pm-7pm. This is a time for fellowship and building strong Christian rela-

tionships while including some fun activities. We will also attend retreats, help with church

events and the younger children, as well as participate in service projects throughout the year.

Normal 5-7pm meetings will not take place when there are special events (WHAT), holidays,

etc. On the 5th Sunday, of any month the youth are to usher at the 11 am service.

Our typical schedule:

5:00 pm - 6:00 pm - Programming

6:00 pm - 7:00 pm - Dinner

your kids!

Education Report for

WHUMC

“That’s the Way I Like It”

The Barr-None Sunday school class has four teach-

ers. One, Ira Chaffin, always testifies to his faith

when he is the teacher. The other teachers are

Jerry Wilson, Charles Moore, and Greg Harrell.

One class member said each teaches in a different

manner. Jerry Wilson remembers Biblical history

which he shares when he is the teacher. Charles

Moore and Greg Harrell have teaching styles that

compliment the material in good teaching-learning

fashion.

The class members include: Jane Baldwin, Shirley

Barbara Conner, Amy Cosner, Betty David, Sandra

Eaton, Ann Fletcher, Louise Fletcher, Pat Holt, Eve-

lyn Humphrey, Bill & Nan Johnson, Annis McCrary,

Wanda Morgan, Gladys Morris, Bette Near, Jean

Pearson, Phyllis Prado, Thelma Price, Bill & Ruth

Simmerman, Martha Welch, and Dave Wilson. The

class meets in the room next to the library and they

use an adult Bible study from Cokesbury.

One Sunday recently, their lesson included scrip-

ture from Paul’s letter to the Romans (12:9-20) in-

cluding the ‘Marks of the True Christian’. (Paul

quoted from Proverbs 25:21-22 in verse 20). Begin-

ning with verse 19, we read:

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” (NRSV)

Now I have often asked myself, how does heaping

burning coals on someone’s head turn enemies into

friends? So, I set about reading as many commen-

taries on the verse as I could find. Some seemed to

pretend the line was not included. C.H. Dodd, in his

Epistle of Paul to the Romans (1932) rewrote the

line:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him, if he is thirsty, give him drink; for in this way you will make him feel a burning sense of shame.”

Karl Barth in his Epistle to the Romans (1968) put it

this way: “On the head of the enemy we must heap

coals of fire. That is to say, the other must be

driven by our action out of his position as an enemy.”

Paul Achtemeier, in his Romans (1985) speaks of

caring for each other as for ourselves. “Christians

are under the same obligation to shape their con-

duct by the structuring power of grace in the secu-

lar world as they are to shape their conduct by that

structuring power of grace in the Christian commu-

nity.” When Paul speaks of caring for an enemy’s

need, in the Romans passage, treated by heaping

“coals of fire” on that enemy’s head, “he is not giv-

ing advice on a better way to get back at one’s ene-

mies! Rather, such treatment is intended to get the

enemy to turn from enmity to friendship. Gracious

deeds thus burn away the hate within.” I like this

definition. If you want to hear another definition

for the “coals of fire”, talk to a member of the Barr

-None class.

The Young Adult class has joined DIGG for now.

Windsor Hills Tours is heading to New York City for a fun filled week

of adventure October 1st through 5th exploring the sights, tasting

great food, and seeing “The Lion King” on Broadway. Due to several cancellations, we have multi-

Wednesday Mornings Matter

Our coffeehouse Bible Book Club has moved from Starkey Mill Mountain Coffee to Salem Mill

Mountain Coffee to allow for a quieter environment. We meet in the back of the building inside

their conference room. Beginning on August 29th, we began a new book recommended by the

Bishop called “Anatomy of Peace.” From the authors of Leadership and Self-Deception comes an

international bestseller that instills hope and inspires reconciliation. Through

a moving story of parents who are struggling with their own children and

with problems that have come to consume their lives, we learn from once-

bitter enemies the way to transform personal, professional, and global con-

flicts, even when war is upon us.
