Pledge towards a sustainable future

The 12th Parliament of Singapore opened its second session on 16 May 2014, with President Tony Tan calling on fellow Singaporeans to renew their pledge to build a better and brighter Singapore.

The President emphasised that new strategies will be set out to chart the next chapter of growth for our nation even as Singapore marks its 50th year of independence next year. As the President aptly put it, “Our environment has changed, and so must our approach to nation building.”

Likewise at Keppel, we have to increase our agility in a fast-changing world and continue to improve our value proposition to stakeholders.

To do that, we must first be adept at sensing the shifts in the environment. That is why it is important to always keep ourselves abreast of industry trends, for example, through active participation in international exchanges and conferences – be it closer to Singapore like the ASEAN Council on Petroleum or further afield such as the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston. By doing so, we keep our fingers on the pulse of the markets to create and capture opportunities.

We must take bold and measured steps in shaping our future. Our recent extension of Near Market Near Customer strategy into the offshore sector in China is a prime example. In April, Keppel Offshore and Marine entered into a partnership with Titan Petrochemicals Group by signing a conditional management service agreement for a 30-year period to manage the Titan Quanzhou Shipyard in China, traditionally a closed market in this sector. The huge Chinese market represents tremendous opportunities if tapped correctly. By structuring a win-win collaboration with strong Chinese partners, we would potentially be able to populate the Chinese market with our proprietary offshore solutions.

To support our ability to take decisive actions towards growth, we must continue to sharpen our tools of the trade. Hard work and continuous innovation remain key to our drive towards excellence and value creation, as with the ability to do so in a sustainable manner.

The award of BCA Green Mark Champion to Keppel Land (see Special Focus) this year is a recognition of Keppel’s continuous efforts in applying green technologies and environmental standards. As a commitment in taking a proactive approach towards environmental protection and sustainability, Keppel Land has set a benchmark for all its new projects in Singapore to attain at least the BCA Green Mark GoldPLUS rating. In addition, a further target was set for all its completed commercial properties in Singapore to meet at least the BCA Green Mark GoldPLUS standard by 2015.

Amidst rapid changes in the global arena, one thing remains constant – people will be the cornerstone of our success. Keppel remains committed to cultivate and empower a robust and united workforce that embraces the same zeal for the future and passion for innovation, to deliver value for our businesses.

Singapore has survived through the early years of nation-building and become today a thriving cosmopolitan city. At 50, Singapore is still “a young nation”, “with great promise ahead”, as the President noted.

Likewise, Keppel, having celebrated its 45th anniversary just last year, remains steadfast to our goal of achieving sustainable growth by constantly shaping itself for the future.

A third KFELS B Class jackup for UMW O&G is under construction at Keppel FELS, and is on track for delivery in the third quarter of 2015.

“I would l ike to thank UMW O&G for repeatedly choosing Keppel and the KFELS B Class for the expansion of its premium fleet. Today, the KFELS B Class is the industry standard

As such, we are certain that UMW Naga 5 will also prove to be a valuable asset to UMW O&G as it continues to grow presence in the Asia Pacific region.”

UMW Naga 5 w i l l be deployed by Nido Petroleum in the Philippines. Delivered to UMW O&G in 2013, UMW Naga 4 is currently supporting the operations of Petronas in Malaysia.

KEppEl dATA CENTRESKeppel Datahub 2 (KDH2) sets the benchmark in sustainable development as it is the first new data centre in Singapore to have achieved the BCA-IDA Green Mark Platinum Award. This is the highest green accolade conferred by the BCA and the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore for data centre developments.

D e s i g n e d t o h i g h specifications, KDH2 is a new

data centre development, undertaken by Keppel Data Centres Holding, a joint venture between Keppel Te lecommunicat ions & Transportat ion (Keppel T&T) and Keppel Land. Strategically located adjacent to the joint venture’s existing data centre in Tampines, KDH2 is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 3Q 2014. When completed, the development will offer more than 6,000 sm of high quality data centre space with the capability to meet high powered rack requirements.

According to a report on

Data Centre Energy Efficiency Benchmarking published by the National Environment Agency in 2012, Singapore’s total commercial data centre capacity is expected to expand by a further 51%, bringing the total area to nearly 337,000 sm by 2015.

With data centres forming 3.6% of the nation’s total electr icity consumption which is poised to increase at an exponential rate over the next five years, any savings in energy will be significant.

Some examples of the green features and init iat ives employed by KDH2 include:•D y n a m i c R o t a r y

Spurring Innovations

The right matchInnovation is not just about creat iv i ty and thinking unboxed. It is also about continual improvement and keeping abreast of the latest technologies to increase productivity and efficiency at work.

Through a course conducted by the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTECH) in 2011, Prime Steelkit, a unit under Keppel Singmarine, learnt more about the Radio Frequency I d e n t i f i c a t i o n ( R F I D ) technology. It found that the technology could be a good solution to a challenge the company was facing in its daily operations.

As a steel processing service provider for the offshore a n d m a r i n e i n d u s t r y specialising in computer n u m e r i c a l c o n t ro l l e d plasma/gas cutting and cold forming of steel plates, Prime Steelkit deals with over 13,000 tonnes of steel every year. Often, when full-size plates are not fully utilised, remnant plates are generated and kept for future use.

The challenge lies in the inventory management of these remnant steel plates that are of odd s izes .

Before the implementation of the RFID system, the retrieval process of these steel plates was largely manual. Workers had to physically comb through piles of remnant plates to find a suitable one which matches their specifications. These specifications include dimensions, grade, heat numbe r and ma te r i a l classification. Inevitably, a lot of time is spent which decreases productivity.

To optimise its inventory management p roces s , Prime Steelkit implemented the RFID tracking tool in December 2012. Since then, the search and retrieval time has been reduced by as much as 50%.

Each remnant steel plate is now assigned a RFID t ag wh i ch s to re s the plate’s specifications. This information is also saved in a web-based management system, allowing workers to conduct a quick search on the computer for the plates they need. At the identified storage location, all the staff needs to do is to scan the stacked up plates with a handheld d e v i c e t o d e t e c t t h e correct plate via bluetooth connection.

A p a r t f ro m re d u c i n g material handling time, the company also benefited from optimising remnant steel plates usage, scrap reduction and stocks inventory. More importantly, the successful

“We used to spend a lot of time identifying the remnant plates we need, and then transporting them to the desired location. Now, we can identify the suitable plates within minutes, and allocate manpower efficiently for the retrieval of these materials. This system has truly brought a significant improvement to our productivity”

When Low Tiau Tong, or TT as he is affectionately known by his colleagues and friends, was asked to go to BrasFELS in April 2009 to help out at the yard, he had intended to stay for just four months. Today, five years on, TT is a familiar figure in Keppel’s yard in Angra dos Reis.

As Director of Spec ia l D u t i e s , T T s u p p o r t s Mr Kwok Kai Choong, P res ident and CEO of BrasFELS, in ensuring all operat ions at the yard runs smoothly. Backed by decades of experience at Keppel FELS, TT is a walking encyc loped ia on ya rd operations. Complemented by a generous and warm personality, and fluency in Portuguese, TT also thrives

Tenacious teacherin guiding and mentoring the younger B raz i l i an engineers.

TT ’s invo lvement wi th Brazil goes way back in the late 1990s. “Before this current stint in Brazil which started in 2009, I have been coming to Brazil on and off since 1998. I first visited Brazil in 1998 as part of the P-27 project team. That was the production p l a t f o r m w h i c h K e p p e l u p g r a d e d f o r Petrobras in Singapore. I w a s t h e p r o j e c t superintendant and had to oversee the completion of the project till the unit struck its first oil in Brazil. Perhaps this first project for Brazil sowed the seeds of my deep involvement with BrasFELS,” said TT.

S i n c e B r a s F E L S w a s operational in 2000, TT was involved in almost every major project that BrasFELS undertook for Brazil. This included the mega floating production units (FPUs) P-52, P-51 and P-56, as well as the P-61 and the current semisubmersibles for Petrobras.

On why TT eventua l l y agreed to work in BrasFELS in 2009, he said, “I know i t ’s not easy to work overseas, especially since Brazil is so far away. But I felt a sense of obligation and commitment to Keppel, to do my best to help transform the company. For BrasFELS, I knew we needed to change the mindsets of the people so that improvements can be

made more effectively in the entire yard.”

Four months stretched to five years. Although TT is away from his family in Singapore, he finds great satisfaction from his work as he continues to build trust and rapport with the Brazilian Keppelites, and helping them to work more productively.

“The Brazilian Keppelites have the skillsets to do their jobs well. They just need guidance to organise their work better. I keep reminding them that they need to complete their tasks today and not wait t i l l tomor row, and to follow through tightly the entire process. With our Can Do! spirit, innovative i d e a s a n d c o h e s i v e teamwork, BrasFELS will be the best shipyard in Brazil,” added TT.

Today, BrasFELS has been upgraded and has a strong workforce of 7,200.

“I think my work here is almost done. The work is of course never fully completed but I think it is time to hand over to others to carry on the good work.” keppelite

To pos i t i ve l y impact communities all across Asia through programmes a n d a c t i v i t i e s t h a t support education and the environment, Keppel Land, together with the Singapore Red Cross, supported SIF’s Water for Life project in Yangon, Myanmar. The three-year project will provide more than 7,000 villagers in the townships of Kaw Hmu and Kungyangon, located two hours from Yangon, better access to clean drinking water.

To-date, a total of 12 tube wells with water storage tanks have been successfully installed and seven hygiene workshops have been conducted, benefitting more than 3,200 villagers in the Kaw Hmu and Kungyangon townships. Four volunteer trips, involving a total of 14 volunteers from across the Keppel Group, have been organised to-date. The next volunteer trip is slated for October 2014.

Lucy Toh, Senior Finance Manager at Keppel Land,

said, “This is my first volunteer trip overseas and it has been a real eye-opener for me. We often take clean water for granted but in fact, every

drop of water counts! I am glad I can do my part to help the less fortunate get access to clean water and as a result, better health.”

It was no ordinary Saturday as 15 Keppel volunteers led 10 students from the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) Centre for Adults on an educational guided walk through Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve on 3 May 2014.

The group explored the various habitats at the Wetland Reserve, walked through a sea of green and spotted unexpected ‘guests’ like crabs, mudskippers, and monitor lizards.

K e p p e l V o l u n t e e r committee member and event organiser Kue Kheng Zie, remarked, “The most e x c i t ab l e pa r t o f t he excursion was when we spotted a huge monitor lizard just a mere one metre

Nature wondersaway from the boardwalk. It was a first for many of us and everyone started snapping away with their cameras.”

The excitement struck the volunteers as well. Loo Yu Gi from Keppel Shipyard recounted, “I was inspired to be a regular volunteer after assisting the APSN students with their performance at Kepplites Charity Concert two years ago.

“Their enthusiasm was contagious. It was indeed rewarding and enriching to be able to brighten the lives of people. I urge fellow Keppelites to join in this cause to touch lives and make a difference.” keppelite

against all oddsTwelve Keppel Volunteers gathered at the Japanese Garden early on Sunday morning, 18 May 2014, to take part in the 3.5km “Wheel, Walk or Jog” event organised by the Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA).

Desp i te looming dark clouds, the HWA members with the Keppel Volunteers pushed off at the flag-off by Mr Heng Chee How, Senior Minister of State with the Prime Minister’s Office.

However, shortly after the event commenced, the walk was cancelled because of a heavy downpour. Yet this did not put a dampener

on the spirits of the Keppel volunteers. They continued to spend an enr iching morning befriending the HWA members.

Keppel FELS Nursing Officer and second-time volunteer Sharon Goh brought her nine-year old daughter along for the event.

She sa id , “Th i s i s my daughter’s second time p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n t h i s meaningful event. Although we did not complete the walk due to the rain, it was a good opportunity for us to bond and at the same time, interact and help the disabled. We look forward

to volunteering again next year.”

Siow Zi Wei, Naval Architect, M a r i n e Te c h n o l o g y Deve l opmen t , Keppe l Singmarine, nonetheless completed the 3.5 km cour se a t one o f the member’s request.

She said, “Despite the heavy downpour, the member I was wheeling suggested continuing with the course. I was concerned for her health and was worried that she might fall sick. However at her urging, we continued with the walk and I was impressed by her Can Do! spirit!

“ A l o n g t h e w a y, t h e m e m b e r t h o u g h t f u l l y sheltered me under her umbrella as we wheeled to the finishing line.”

Keppel FELS has signed an engineering services agreement with Workfox B.V, a subsidiary of the Seafox Group (Seafox), to embark on an engineering study of a purpose-built accommodation jackup rig with well intervention and P&A features.

The p ro jec t , wh i ch i s named Seafox 8, is being developed to address a gap in the current P&A market. Subsea fields are reaching the end of their productive lives in areas such as the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and there are a substantial number of wells in both regions that will need to be properly sealed up in the next few years.

Seafox 8 will be able to offer P&A, well intervention as well as accommodation and crane support services. With a spacious deck and comprehensive amenities, i t c a n a c c o m m o d a t e 282 persons on board. The jackup can also be c o n f i g u re d f o r o t h e r offshore support services.

Leveraging the successful partnership of an earlier project, Seafox 5, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) is also in discussion

Innovative rig with P&a features Keppel will undertake study on accommodation jackup rig with Plug & abandonment (P&a) features based on its KFELS J Class design customised for the harsh environment of the Norwegian North Sea.

with Seafox to enter into a joint venture to place an order for Seafox 8 upon completion of the study, which is expected in 2H 2014.

Mr Keesjan Cordia, CEO of Seafox, said, “With our background in providing support to the offshore oil & gas industry, we noticed the strong demand for P&A services and identified a need for a specialised rig in this market. We believe Seafox 8 offers the ideal solution as it can work all year round including during the North Sea’s winter pe r iod and under take multiple services at a time.

“It has NORSOK-specified accommodation for crew and client personnel, and a lower operating cost than existing equipment with a single role purpose.”

The hull and legs of the new generation jackup rig will be based on Keppel’s new KFELS J Class design which is customised to operate in water depths of up to 112 m in the harsh offshore environmental conditions of the Norwegian North Sea.

Designed as a drilling jackup rig for the Norwegian North

Based on Keppel’s KFELS J Class design, Seafox 8 is being developed to address a gap in the current P&A market and will be 25-30% more economical in terms of dayrates compared to existing jackups

Sea, it is an enhancement of Keppel’s proven harsh environment drilling rigs – the KFELS N Class and KFELS G Class designs. Keppel O&M has previously del ivered three r igs of each design, which are successfully operating in the North Sea including Norwegian waters.

Mr Wong Kok Seng, MD of Keppel O&M (Offshore) and Keppel FELS, said, “For Seafox 8, we are taking the hull of an ultra-harsh environment r ig in our

KFELS J Class for use as an accommodat ion r ig with equipment for P&A services. This is an example of how we have been able to leverage and apply our technology expertise innovatively for a variety of offshore applications. And with an experienced partner like Seafox in this market, we are confident Seafox 8 wi l l be wel l -received and give us a good head start in growing our track record as the leading solutions provider for the P&A services sector.” keppelite
