Windows 10 Upgrade Guide
Affected Model: Models in Windows 10 upgrade list
Notification:
1. Some hardware or software features need a driver update in order to work properly
after the upgrade, apply the update from Windows Update or download the latest
Windows 10 driver from MSI website. More updates will be released on Microsoft
Windows Update and MSI website regularly, keep close attention to the release.
2. If you don’t see your notebook model in the Windows 10 upgrade list, we strongly
suggest you not to do the Windows 10 upgrade for now and continue following up for
our update announcement on the Windows 10 upgrade support. You can also check with
the local MSI office for the Windwos 10 upgrade support of your notebook modle.
Note
Upgrade is only allowed when the orginal OS is activated.
Upgrade process cannot run in Safe Mode.
Before the upgrade process starts, back up all your personal files and programs.
Keep the AC adapter plugged during the whole update process.
A. Windows 10 Upgrade
See the table below for the appropriate Windows 10 upgrade path for your
notebook. Due to the high demand for Windows 10, if you have reserved a Windows
10 upgrade with the Get Windows 10 app before, it’s suggested to run the upgrade
after receiving the notification from the Get Windows 10 app.

[Upgrade Path ONE: Get Windows 10 app(Reserve free Windows 10 Upgrade)]
1. In Windows Update, make sure you have below hotfix installed on your
system.
KB3065988 (for Windows 8.1 system)
KB3065987 (for Windows 7 SP1 system)
*Windows Update:
i. Right click on Windows icon which located at the lower left
corner and click “Control Panel”.
ii. Click “System and Security”.
iii. Click “Windows Update”.
2. In the left pane of Control Panel, click “Check for updates” and “Install
updates” till your Windows is up to date.
3. Click on the Windows icon located at the right end of the task bar.
*Q: Why don’t I have the Get Windows 10 app?
4. Click “Reserve your free upgrade” and you’re in the queue for the
Windows 10 upgrade.

*Due to the high demand for Windows 10, Microsoft is using a phased
rollout to get everyone upgraded. It’s suggested to start the upgrade after
receiving a notification from the Get Windows 10 app, or follow the [Upgrade
Path TWO] to manually upgrade your Windows system to Winodws 10.
5. Click HERE to continue the upgrade process.

[Upgrade Path TWO: Using ISO file or USB Media]
1. Download 64-bit version of “Windows 10 upgrade download tool” from
Microsoft website.
2. Double click on the “MediaCreationToolx64.exe”
3. Choose “Upgrade this PC now”, or “Create installation media for
another PC” and click “Next”.
4. Check your current Windows Edition and Architecture(System Type) in
the “System” page.
(Right click on the Windows icon located at the lower right corner of the
desktop, and then select “System”)
5. Select Windows 10 system language, architecture, and edition
according to your original system and click “Next” to continue.

6. Choose to create an upgrade USB flash drive or to save as an upgrade
ISO file and click “Next” to start downloading the upgrade file. Here we
choose to create an USB flash drive to show in this upgrade guide. *The ISO file can be used on an USB flash drive or to create a DVD for your upgrade
afterwards. *The USB flash drive needs to be at least 3GB.

7. The USB flash drive has been created, click Finish to continue.
(*You can also burn out the upgrade DVD by clicking “Open DVD
burner”.)

8. Plug the USB flsh drive on your notebook, open the File Explorer and
click on your USB flash drive. Double click on “setup.exe” to continue
the upgrade process.
*The upgrade file can be executed in a legal and activated Windows
system only, if you use it as a boot media and run a clean install, you
may have problem activating your Windows.
9. Click HERE to continue the upgrade process.

[Start Windows 10 Installation]
1. Select “Download and install updates”, then click “Next” to continue.

2. Read the Microsoft software license carefully and then click “Accept” to
accept the license.

3. Click “Change what to keep” to select different options of what to keep
before the upgrade process starts.
4. You can choose what you preferred to keep before the upgrade, here
we choose “Nothing” to show in this upgrade guide. Click “Next” to
continue.
*Some old drivers may have conflicts with Windows 10 and caused the
feature mulfunction, so we suggest to choose “Keep Nothing” since this
will give you a more stable system after the upgrade.
*If you choose to keep personal files, apps and Windows settings or to
keep personal files only, it’s suggested to uninstall all of your original
drivers or 3rd party software before running the upgrade. Keep personal files, apps and Windows settings:
Keeps settings includes your desktop backgraound, internet favorite,
any files that are saved in your User folder (for example Documents
and Desktop folders) and apps which will work after the upgrade.
Keep personal files only:
Keeps only settings that are saved in your User folder (for example
Documents and Desktop folders), apps and the Windows settings
will be deleted.
Nothing:
This deletes everything including all apps, your personal files and
Windows settings from the current system.

5. Getting Updates, click “Next” to continue.

7. (Setup Windows 10)
Choose your country, preferred system language, keyboard layout and
your time zone. Click “Next” to continue the setup.
8. Create the new user account in Windows 10 by entering the User name
and the log in password. (Password is optional) Click “Next” to continue
the setup.

9. Click “Use Express settings” and start the setup.

B. Driver Update & Windows Update
In order to have a more stabled Windows 10 system, please download & install
the latest Windows 10 driver/utility from MSI website and run the Windows Update
to install the up to date hotfix afterwards. [Driver Install & Update]
1. Connect your notebook to the internet.
2. Visit MSI website at “www.msi.com”.
3. Find the driver download page of your notebook.
4. Download and update the latest Windows 10 driver and utility.
5. Continue to run the Windows Update. [Windows Update]
1. Click on Windows icon located at the bottom left corner and select Settings.

2. Click “Update & Security” and select Windows Update tab.
3. Click the “Check for Updates” button to start the windows updates
automatically.
4. Repeat “Step 4” above step till your windows is up to date.
(*Note: It’s suggested to keep your internet connection active all the time
since Windows Update will regularly search for the avaible updates
autometically.)
*Windows Update will not only help installing the Windows hotfix but also the
generic driver for your devices. If the Windows generic driver has caused some
function stop working or you would like to use MSI released driver, please refer
to the FAQ: “How to Hide or Show Windows Updates?”.
