It is strongly recommended to shut down the operating system before switching off the device! Switching off the device without shut down of the operating system may cause loss of data!

An automatically shut down of the operating system can be done e.g. with an UPS (uninterruptable power supply). UPSs are available from 3rd party suppliers. Some Windows XP Embedded versions can be switched off without shut down. See Chap. "EWF" (Enhanced Write Filter).

5.2 TOUCH-SCREEN The touch screen is used for the operation of the device. Depending on the device version a resistive- or Infrared-Touch-screen is available. The touch screen is mouse compatible and operates like a mouse click with the left mouse button at the touch position.

5.2.1 Configuration of the touch driver Configuration, Test and calibration of the touch screen is done via the "Gesys touch screen" Control Panel Applet (s.a. system settings):

Double click speed Maximum delay between 2 touch clicks, so that this will be interpreted as a double click. Double click area Maximum distance between 2 touch clicks, so that this will be interpreted as a double click. Legth of beep For test of the integrated touch beep.

5.2.5 GesysSaver / Backlight Saver The Gesys screen saver is, even thought not a screen saver in the classsic sens, impemented by the technique of a windows screen saver. It's main job is to dim the backlight for saving energy.

Wait After the wait time the backlight brightess is reduced about by the half. The user interface rest visible. By touching on the screen the brigtness is restored to the original value. While the saving state the second optional time is started, which can be confiquered in the settings dialog.

Switch off Backlight after After the second time the backlight is turn off. In this state the first display contact does only stop the saver and nothing else. This is for safty reason, therewith no unintented manipulation can happen. This time should not be to short, for that the backlight is not switched too often. Only between In order to prevent too many cycle of operation, the backlight is only switching off within this time range. Switch of display Is required for some hardware configurations to switch off the backlight Backlight-Saver Stop Defines the behavior how to switch on the backlight.

Backlight functions are hardware-dependend and are not available with all hardware configuration.

Software System Description Windows 2000/ XP/ XPe/ POSReady Backup

© 2010 by Grossenbacher Systeme AG DVS 52696 V4.0 23

6 Backup The user is responsible for backup. The procedure is compareable to the backup of a normal PC. As backup software e.g. EasyBackup (see: Chap. 6.3), Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost or NT-Backup can be used. The backup software should be able to create new storage devices without the need to install Windows first. The backuped data should not be stored on the same mass storage inside the device. Because in this case the defect of the mass storage device would also cause a loss of the backuped data.

Don’t save backuped data on the same device. Corresponding to the used operating system the following backup strategies are recommended: Windows 2000 / Windows XP The backup software can be installed directly on the device. Backups can then be done the same way as on a standard PC. For details refer to the manuals of the used backup software. Alternatively the mass storage can be removed and the backup can be done in a spezial "Backup-PC". The backup can then be done with the backup software installed on the backup PC. Windows XP Embedded / Embedded POSReady 2009 The installation of a backup software on devices with Windows XP Embedded is not recommended. On the one hand there may be not enough free disk space and otherwise it can not be guaranteed that the backup software runs correct on Windows XP Embedded. ( s.a. Chap. 3.3) So for Windows XP Embedded systems it is recommended to remove the mass storage and do the backup in a special "Backup-PC".

6.1 COPY MEDIA Alternatively to data backup it is possible to create copies of medias e.g. harddisk or compact flash. Without special arrangement a copy of a media must only be used on the exactly same device where the orginal media was used.

A backup copy of a media must only be used on the exactly same device.

If a media should be copied for multiple devices, keep the following things in mind: All Windows versions (Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows XP Embedded) have a so-called SID (Security Identifyer). This SID must be unique for every Installation. Medias must only be copied when it is guaranteed that every single device will get a new SID. The SID will only be created at the first start up and will then be stored in the Registry!

Devices with same SIDs may cause unforseeable behavior or loss of data! All devices with Windows XP Professional must be activated with their own licence key (see licence label). An already activated Windows XP Professional must not be used as source.

Do not duplicate activated Windows XP Professional Installations!

6.2 BACKUP MEDIA It is possible to order preconfigured backups of medias. This medias are preinstalled with the operating system (delivery state) but WITHOUT the Windows licence!

Backup medias only contain the operating system and the drivers. Applications have to be installed. The user is responsible for the legal issues of the licence agreement and to ensure that each device is used with a legal Windows licence!

For the initial operation of such a media do the following steps: (s.a. Chap. 4) Use device with keyboard and mouse Windows 2000

1. insert media 2. power up the device. Windows 2000 will start, login, do the configuration, shut down and restart. This

can take some minutes. 3. As soon as the login screen appears the device is ready for use.

Do not interrupt the configuration process! Windows 2000 must shut down and restart

autonomously! Windows XP Professional

1. insert media 2. connect network cable (the Windows activation requires an active Internet access) 3. power up the device. Follow the instructions of the Mini-Setup (Licence number see licence label) 4. As soon as the login screen appears the device is ready for use.

The Mini-Setup must be done. Do not switch off the device while the Mini-Setup is in

progress. Windows XP Embedded

1. insert media 4. power up the device. Windows XP Embedded will start and the configuration will be done. This can

take some minutes. 2. As soon as the login screen appears click "OK" 3. Depending on the device or Windows XP Embedded versions different hardware components may be

found and the required drivers will be installed. 4. restart device. 5. As soon as the login screen appears the device is ready for use.

Do not switch off the device during configuration process!

6.3 EASYBACKUP With Easy Backup it is possible for the customer within a view minutes to backup and recover the complete installation of a Windows 2000/XP/Xpe system on an USB-Memorystick. The USB-Memorystick contains the Backup Software and the Backup-Image created by the user. For recovery the USB-Memorystick is bootable, so the complete image can be installed on a empty harddisk or CompactFlash. (s.a. device description for booting from USB devices) Easy Backup is optionally available and will be delivered on a bootable USB-Memorystick with Software licence for the Backup-Software.

7.2 REMOTECLIENT The program RemoteClient allows the access to WindowsCE-devices, where a RemoteServer is installed. This devices can then be controlled by remote. For devices of the XV/XVH-Series it is necessary to specify the IP-Adresse and additionally the port number 51738:

7.3 RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON The touch driver simulates a mouse click with the left mouse button pressed at the corresponding position when touching the screen. The Utility „tSwapSystemTray.exe“ (s.a. Program Files\Tools) allows to simulate a right mouse button click. For that you have to touch to the „tSwapSystemTray“ within the taskbar first and then the next touch of the screen will be interpreted as a „right mouse button click“.

7.4 ENHANCED WRITE FILTER - EWF The EWF (Enhanced Write Filter) allows to write protect single partitions. For that all write operations to the corresponding drive will be redirected into memory. After a restart of the device all changes are lost. This prevents damages of the file system (power off without shut down of the operating system, deleting system files by accident, etc). The amount of required memory depends on the number, size and position of the write accesses. This memory is no longer available for the operating system and also not for the application. This memory can only be released by a restart of the system.

EWF (Enhanced Write Filter) is only available for Windows XP Embedded!

EWF reduces the amount of available memory for the operating system and the

application! To less working memory may cause loss of data! EWF may not be usefull for devices which run in non-stop operations and which are not restarted periodically!

7.4.1 Control of EWF The standard configuration protects drive C. Additionally mass storage devices or USB devices can not be protected. The EWF is controlled via the command line tool "EWFMGR.EXE" . The state of the EWF (active- or inactive) will change only after restart of the device. Command "EWFMGR C:" shows the current statue of the EWF: State: DISABLED EWF ist inactive ENABLED EWF ist active Boot Command: DISABLE After restart the EWF will be inactive ENABLE After restart the EWF will be active

Changes of the EWF state will be active after restart of the device!

The command "EWFMGR C: -commitanddisable" disables the EWF and writes all changes to the drive:

The command "EWFMGR C: -enable" activates the EWF:

7.5 FILE-BASED WRITE FILTER - FBWF The FBWF is similar to the EWF, except that single Path or files can be excluded from the filter. "Commitanddisable" is not available for the FBWF. The FBWF not available in our Windows XP embedded SP2 Images.

7.5.1 Control of FBWF The FBWF can be controlled with the commnad tool "FBWFMGR.EXE" . The state of the FBWF (active or inactive) changes only after reboot. "FBWFMGR" shows the current state of the FBWF:

File-based write filter configuration for the current session: the current state of the FBWF File-based write filter configuration for the next session: the state of the FBWF after reboot

FBWF state changes happens only after reboot.

Commad "FBWFMGR /enable" activates the FBWF:

Command "FBWFMGR /addvolume C:" add the driver c: to the FBWF:

Command "FBWFMGR /addexclusion C: \Test\Persistent" adds an exclusion for the Path "C:\Test\Persistent", This means that changes to files in this path a stored directly to the storage media and not to the RAM overlay.

It's possible to exclude path or single files

With the Registry Filter (siehe Kap. 7.6) values and key in the registry can be excluded

from the Write Filter and can be made persistent.

Command Befehl "FBWFMGR /removeexclusion C: \Test\Persistent" removes the path "C:\Test\Persistent" from the exclusion list. This means that changes to files in this folder are stored to the RAM overlay and not to the storage media. Changes are lost after reboot.

Command "FBWFMGR /removevolume c: 1". The volume c: will not be secured by the FBWF anymore 1 means the exclusion list will also be deleted. 0 means the exclusion list remains..

Command "FBWFMGR /disable" The FBWF will be inactivated.

7.6 REGISTRY FILTER The Registry Filter care for, that the defined registry keys are nor writen to the RAM overlay by the write filter. Changes are to the registry remains after reboot. By default the required keys for the domain logon and for remote desktop access are hold persistent by the registry filter.

But users can also define own keys for the registry filter. Example: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RegFilter\Parameters\MonitoredKeys\3] "ClassKey"="HKCU" "FileNameForSaving"="GesysTst.rgf" "RelativeKeyName"="Software\GesysTest"

8 Troubleshooting and fault rectification

8.1 KNOWN PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS

8.1.1 Domain integration and EWF If the device should be used within a domain, it is not possible to use EWF. The domain controller saves different settings of the device on drive C. If EWF ia active this changes will be lost after restart and then the device will no longer be recognized as a member of the domain.

EWF must not be activated if the device should be integrated in a domain!

8.1.2 Automatical daylight saving time setting and EWF If Windows is configured for automatical daylight saving time, Windows saves the current setting in the registry. If EWF is activated this settings will be lost after restart and so Windows will set the PC clock every time at start up. (depending on the current time zone and the current daylight saving mode). This problem does not appear if the clock will be synchronized on startup e.g. via network (network time server).

Deactivate "Automatical daylight saving time“, when EWF is activated and the internal PC clock is not synchronized!

8.1.3 WindowsXP Embedded – Logon-Menu Within the Windows XP embedded Logon-Menu the keyboard layout is always „English“ and can not be changed! This may cause problems when entering user and/or passwords!

8.1.4 Domain integration and Registry Filter If using Registry Filter the device has to be shut down proper. Otherwise the domain access may be lost.

Always shut down device proper with Registry Filter
