    FAT16/FAT32 offer no data securityand leave the volume open toattack.

    NTFS is faster and allowspermissions to be set for a single tomultiple files.

    NTFS -New Technology File System

    NTFS is the standard filesystem of Windows NT and its

    descendants Windows 2000,Windows XP, Windows Server2003, and Windows Vista.

    -NTFS replaced Microsoft's

    previous FAT file system, usedin MS-DOS and early versionsof Windows.

    The simplest definition ofmetadata is that it is dataabout data. An item of

    metadata may describean individual data item ora collection of data items.Metadata is used to

    facilitate theunderstanding, use andmanagement of data.

    Access Control List (ACL)

    ACL is a list of permissionsattached to an object. The

    list specifies who or what isallowed to access theobject and whatoperations are allowed to

    be performed on theobject.

    Ajournaling file system is a

    file system that logschanges to a journalbefore actually writingthem to the main file

    Creating Users

    Administrator & Guest (defaultinactive) are default users.

    When you add a user to yourcomputer, you are allowing that

    individual to have access to filesand programs on your computer.

    1.Open User Accounts in ControlPanel.

    2.On the Users tab, click Add.

    3.Follow the instructions on thescreen to add a new user

    You must have a computeradministrator account on thecomputer to add a new user to thecomputer.

    1.Open User Accounts in ControlPanel.

    2.Click Create a new account. 3.Type a name for the new user

    account, and then click Next.

    4.Click Computer administrator or

    Limited, depending on the type ofaccount you want to assign to thenew user, and then click CreateAccount.

    Add New User gives an existing

    domain user permission to use thecomputer.

    You can only add existing domainusers by using User Accounts. To adda new local user, on the Advanced

    tab, click the Advanced button. InLocal Users and Groups, click Users,and then on the Action menu, clickNew User.

    You should not add a new user to theAdministrators group unless the userwill perform only administrative tasks

    Creating strong passwords

    -Windows passwords can be up to 127characters long.

    -if you are using Windows XP on a

    network that also has computers usingWindows 95 or Windows 98, consider

    using passwords not longer than

    14 characters.

    Permissions :To turn Simple File Sharing on or

    off in Windows XP Professional,follow these steps:

    1.Double-click My Computer on

    the desktop.2.On the Tools menu, click FolderOptions.

    3.Click the View tab, and thenselect the Use Simple FileSharing (Recommended)check box to turn on Simple FileSharing. (Clear this check boxto turn off this feature.)
