Manipulating Windows

• Minimize Button

• Reduce a window to the task bar

• Maximize/Restore Down Button

• Maximize expands a window to fill the computer screen, restore down displays it less than a full screen

• Close Button

• “X” will exit a Windows Program

Starting Programs & Switching Between Windows • Starting a program

• Click on the Start Button and choose the file from the ‘All Programs’ List or type in the program’s name

• Double click the icon on a desktop shortcut (an icon that represents a link to an item, rather than the item itself)

• Switching between windows

• Use taskbar, jump lists, or Alt + Tab

• Active window – the window you are currently working with (title bar is shaded slightly different)

• Files - Electronic collections of data that you create and save on a computer

• File Management - Organizing & keeping track of your files

• Folders - Areas on a hard disk or floppy disk used to store files

Identifying Files

• Three main file types:

• Systems files – a file essential to the operating system

• Application files – a file essential to a specific application program

• Data files – one created when working with an application program

Hold down the shift key and highlight the last file in a

group

DELETING FILES

• File goes to Recycle Bin

• From Hard Disk Drive (C)

• Can be recovered or permanently deleted

• Files are permanently deleted:

• From Student Folder

• From Device With Removable Storage

• Recycle Bin – can reverse the delete by restore files

• Empty Recycle Bin – permanently deletes files

File Properties

• File properties: characteristics that help locate & organize files

• Search box – allows you find files within identified folder or drive

• Hidden file – not displayed in the computer window

Solving Common File Problems

• Incompatibility of application programs

• Install needed software program or use a different OS

• Corruption of files

• If useable, use the document recovery task pane to reopen a file

• Denied access

• Re-save a “Read-Only” file

• Use password to open file


Recommended
