Dear Parents and Carers As Term 4 ends, and we look ahead to the coming term, it is important to reflect on everything that has taken place in the last few weeks. Students and staff have been working hard to complete controlled assessments and coursework, as well as internal examinations. There are some additional sessions which staff are leading over the Easter break and I am sure the students are grateful for the time staff are giving freely. This week, we have seen our students being particularly enterprising in their charity work. The Year 12 Interact Club members were hard at work selling ice cream and drinks at break time on Wednesday, with all proceeds going to their designated charities. The students had researched their market thoroughly and carried out market research to assess which flavours would be the most popular. Also this week, Year 11 students have been raising money for their prom decorations through a cake sale on the final day of term and an Easter egg tombola. Their prom takes place on 10 July at Windsor Race Course and there is already a great deal of excitement about the event. We welcomed a veteran of the Second World War on Wednesday this week. Madame Sheldon, who is now in her nineties, spoke to the Year 10 history students about her experiences and then delivered the same talk in fluent French to the Sixth Form French students. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students. We finished the term with Year 9 and 10 House Events, with students competing in a range of sporting events to gain points for their houses. Points go towards an overall house winner at the end of the academic year. It was fantastic to see so many students taking part and supporting. It was also a non-uniform day and we donated money to brain tumour research. There are two trips taking place over the Easter holiday. The ski trip is taking place in Italy and the Music trip will be visiting Paris. We look forward to hearing a full report when we return. I hope you all have a good break and, for those taking examinations this summer, you use the time productively to get organised and revisit topics covered across the two year course. There are some tips for getting the most out of the Easter holiday later on in this newsletter. We look forward to seeing you on 16 April. Mrs G Labrum

After her first talk, Madame Sheldon was kind enough to speak with Sixth Form students who are studying French for A-Level. She conversed with them in French about her story, which enabled pupils to focus on their conversational French.

Upper Schools Concert

On Monday, both Windsor Girls’ School and The Windsor Boys’ School met for our end of term concert to showcase talent and achievements. With performances from the orchestra, bands, choirs, soloists and quartets, the evening was overflowing with seamless talent across all year groups. The evening ended with the Big Band immersing themselves into the audience, playing an uplifting, invigorating song which was a perfect end to a busy term. To see the audience leave with such a wide smile on their face reminds us of how outstanding the music department is and what a privilege it is to be a part of it. - Martha Allerton, Year 12

Interact Ice-cream Sale

In order to raise funds for their two charities, Windsor Community First Responders and Girls Not Brides, the WGS Interact Club was selling ice-cream and soft drinks during Break 1 on Wednesday to some very eager pupils. Despite the stormy weather, everyone was dreaming of sun and happily bought up all the ice-cream and soft drinks.

Aspiring High Programme On 26 March 2018, we had the pleasure of welcoming Patrick Flynn for our last AHP meeting 2017-2018. Achieving 6 A* grades at A-level and attending Cambridge University, Patrick had no shame in admitting that he, above all people, has still not found a career best suited for him. Patrick emphasised the importance of trying new things, perseverance and pursuing a career in a subject we love. We left the meeting reassured. This down-to-earth experience, concluded by a peaceful mediation session led by Ms. Krstovic, was a real and memorable finale to Aspiring High 2017-2018, a group that has provided many spectacular opportunities to the girls who aspire high. Darcy Aigle-Boucher, Year 12

Annual Gym and Dance Show On Tuesday, Miss Hazell spent the day with the WGS Dance Company and WGS Gymnasts at The Windsor School Sports Partnership’s Annual Gym and Dance Show. The students spent the day rehearsing with the middle schools and performing the dance/ gym routines that they have been working on this term. Then, in the evening, Miss Skinner watched as the students performed to a packed audience at The Windsor Boys’ School; they did themselves and the school proud. Well done to Eliza Bean, Savannah Denwood, Tia Mills, Elora Carrard and Chloe Fitch, who formed the Windsor Girls’ School Dance Company, and Camille Wallis-Desablens and Rosie Howard who were the Windsor Girls’ School Gymnasts.

Summer Term Sports After Easter, all classes are on summer sports. This includes two lessons of rounders, one lesson of athletics and one lesson of hockey, which will continue until May half term. For these, summer kit (polo and skort) is required, however, for hockey, full kit, including gum shield, is needed.

Year 11 Leavers The PE department would love any old kit that you wish to donate - especially skorts or jogging bottoms. These can be handed in to any member of PE.

Top Tips for Getting the Most out

of the Easter Holidays

1. Create a revision timetable – downloadable templates are available through www.getrevising.co.uk

2. Collate all your Personalised Learning Checklists (PLC) - colour code them red,

amber and green to identify where you need to focus your revision time. 3. Make sure you have past examination papers - attempt them under

timed examination conditions. 4. Allow time to do nice things, be realistic in your revision mapping and think

about how your can sustain your working patterns. 5. Think about your diet; does it provide you with the necessary energy? Consider

healthy options and get enough sleep. 6. Continue to exercise and take part in relaxation activities such as yoga and

pilates. 7. If you have a part-time job, speak with your employer and arrange a reduction

of hours during the examination period. 8. Find where you work best where you can focus and avoid distractions (put your

phone into do not disturb mode). 9. Have something to look forward to for when the examinations are finished. The

prom, your family holiday, celebrating with your friends will help keep you motivated over the next few months.

10. Say if you need help, that is what we are here for.

Miss Carron and Mrs Papayianni will be doing the Race for Life ‘Pretty Muddy’ 5k on 3 June 2018 for Cancer Research.

Some may remember Rachel Terry who was a student at Windsor Girls’ School, and left in 2013.

This is Rachel's story…

On 23 June 2017, I was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS for short) at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton. My tumour was in my womb, which was extremely rare for someone who was only 20 years old. My chemotherapy started in July and I had 4 cycles. It was tough and I spent a lot of time in and out of hospital, as well as losing over 5 stone in weight and losing all my hair. My surgery was brought forward because of complications and, on October 30, I had my tumour, womb and ovaries removed at the Royal Marsden hospital in Chelsea. I then found out that my tu-mour was actually two different types of cancer, and I was diagnosed with Carcinoma Sarcoma on top of the RMS diagnosis I already had. The chemotherapy for this type of cancer meant I had to have another 4 cycles of different chemotherapy drugs. I have just started Radiotherapy which I will be having every day, Monday to Friday, for the next 5 to 6 weeks. Over the many months of treatment, I have met other inspiring cancer patients, young and old, and it is really encouraging to see how other strong people cope. The amazing care that I have received from the Royal Marsden Cancer Trust, and throughout my treatment, has motivated me to want to give something back. Emotionally, for a patient young or old, having to deal with having cancer is really tough, so I would like to raise as much money as I can to help Cancer Research; particularly for the rarer forms of can-cer which are difficult to treat. Thank you for reading my story and to anyone who donates.

Please help us beat this cruel illness by following the link!
