N.V. Colet Vins Vatua! £5 Spain, Penedes | 6 different varietiesCalm and soothing wintry fizz. 6 different grapes make this blend in the Penedes vineyards, just south of Barcelona. They could label it a cava but choose not to.

2007 Maximin Grünhaus, Abstberg Kabinett Von Schubert £6Germany, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer | RieslingOne of our personal favourites. The Gutsverwaltung von Schubert-Grünhaus estate (usually shortened to the only slightly easier Maximin Grunhaus) has produced wine since the 10th century - by monks for the first 800 years and more recently by the von Schubert family who organically make some of the finest rieslings in the region. This Kabinett has no nasty petrol-y whiffs like some rieslings, just honeyed citrus and pleasant sweetness.
2009 Tardive Marco Sara £8Italy, Friuli | FriulanoMarco Sara works only with native grapes to give a true expression of this remarkable corner of Italy. 20% affected by noble rot (Botrytis Cinerea) definitely not sweet though. Dry and quite full.
2010 Meursault Les Narvaux Vincent Girardin Cote de Beaune £10France, Burgundy | ChardonnayOur favourite from a recent Burgundy tasting. Extremely elegant and a bit more floral than some less giving Meursaults.

2007 Fleur du Perigord Rouge Chateau Thenac £4France, Bergerac | Cabernet Sauvignon BlendThis is a very decent wine which has found its way to us at an even more decent price. Not complex or difficult, but rich and very well-structured. We think it tastes a bit of bitter chocolate.
2010 Cuvee 81 Les Clos Perdus Corbieres £6France, Languedoc Carignan | Grenache, MourvedreWhat happens when an English farmer and an Australian dancer go into business in the Languedoc? They make great wine, of course. Hugo Stewart and Paul Old buy grapes from all around the region and then make their wines by hand in a small garage in Peyriac-Sur-Mer, right by the coast, which seems to give them a saline quality. This is our favourite of theirs and a great ‘meat’ wine.
2009 Gimblett Gravels (Block 14) Craggy Range £8New Zealand, Hawkes’ Bay | SyrahA very refreshing Syrah made from vines brought to New Zealand 150 years ago. Aged in French oak, it has a fine ripeness. Ideal if you’re not eating. Not bad at all if you are.
2007 Chateau Rauzan-Segla Cuvee ‘Segla’, Margaux £10France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux BlendRauzan Segla, owned by Chanel, is one of Margaux’s more fashionable domaines, releases this as its second wine - but a very fine second it is. Very smooth and opulent - a chance to try a serious bordeaux for £10.

NV Ariyanas Naturalmente Dulce, Bentomiz, Malaga 50cl £7Spain, Malaga | MoscatelWe like our sweetness subtle and this certainly is. No overpowering sugar here, this is naturally sweet and grown at altitude giving it a freshness to pick you up at the end of a meal, rather than weigh you down.

Here are some wines we have picked up ourselves over the years. They are rare and not cheap but some of the best, we hope. A reasonable cash margin has been added to the price we paid for them. As with all our wines they are stored in our conditioned cellar so should be in perfect nick, but because we only have 1 or 2 bottles in some cases we might not be able to replace it with exactly the same bottle - but we will aim to find something you’ll enjoy.
