There was a lot of noise in Wisconsin when Reggie White signed with our beloved Green Bay Packers. It was transforma-tional at that time and again this year we are talking about the Super Bowl as our goal. Foxconn could have a similar trans-formational impact in Wisconsin. I don’t want to focus on whether or not it is or isn’t a good business deal. There is loads of information, true and false, about that. I want to focus on the Buy Local element that Foxconn has brought to the forefront.
As a business, it makes the most sense to buy products from your neighbor. Our country was formed on that basic princi-ple, although usually it was corn traded for a chicken. If you neighbor doesn’t have it, maybe your community does, or maybe your region, or maybe your state. The key point is buying local supports busi-ness growth and expansion in our own community.
Skyward’s new building was built with 95.5% of products from the state of Wisconsin. That’s buying local. Central Rivers Farmshed’s entire mission is to expand the connection between local res-idents and their food by providing oppor-tunities for participation, education, coop-eration, and action to support a local food economy in Central Wisconsin. Wouldn’t it be great if more businesses in our com-munity felt this way?
The challenge is, while businesses may feel that way, how do you make it happen? The Portage County Business Council is now able to connect our local businesses with each other and an entire
statewide network through the Supply Chain Marketplace (www.wisupplychain-marketplace.com). When you go there, you will see it is branded at “New North” while our regional economic develop-ment partner is Centergy (http://centergy.net/about/index.html). Please don’t let that stop you! It IS a STATEWIDE mar-ketplace to promote your own business and to search other businesses to bring your bottom line more local (or at least statewide).
Governor Walker was in Wausau last week to promote the site as a way to keep buying local and to get in front of any Foxconn opportunity. While nobody will guarantee you business from Foxconn, or any other business for that matter, I can guarantee that if you are not in the marketplace it will reduce your chances. Additionally, in order to manage expectations, the marketplace may not be for every business, but find a way to get engaged.
W H Y S H O U L D W E C A R E A B O U T F OXC O N N ? TODD KUCKKAHN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In the New North region, the supply chain marketplace has had a great impact. The Supply Chain Marketplace Directory highlights company capabilities, is searchable via keywords and categories, is a connecting interface for business-to-business transactions, organizes suppliers for new go-to-market opportunities and makes locating suppliers as easy as entering a few key strokes. We can see that same impact in our community and the Centergy region.
As we continue to encourage buying local, it is somewhat sad to say that Small Business Saturday is only three months away. I do love the four seasons here but I’m not ready for Thanksgiving! Small Business Saturday is a nationwide effort to encourage all of us to buy local in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Keep that in mind as Back-To-School efforts dwindle, as well.
Find every excuse possible to keep our hard-earned dollars in our community where we get an economic impact multiplier when buying local.

Portage County Business Council (PCBC) Member Referral Program
We know that many of our new members are referred by existing members, and we want to say “THANK YOU!”
Starting September 1, 2017, if you refer a new business(es) to join as a member of PCBC and that business joins, you will receive $100 off your next PCBC dues renewal! It is simply our way of saying thanks for being a partner with the Business Council.
How it works:
1. Introduce a new member to PCBC via an email introduction or in-person meeting
2. Encourage new member to join 3. Once new member payment is received, you will get a $100 credit
towards your company membership dues
Program Notes:
Credit will be applied to next membership dues renewal only- may not be used on any other fees, events, or any previous dues/fees.
Credit will only be given if the new member joins PCBC and payment is received.
A “referral” is defined as an email and/or in-person introduction. Verbal or word-of-mouth referrals are very much appreciated and always welcomed but will not result in a referral credit.
A “new member” is defined as any organization that has never been a member of PCBC or has not been a member in the past 13 months.

Members of our Ambassadors Club and PCBC Staff joined Pizza Ranch, 1300 Commerce Place in Plover for a ribbon cutting, soft opening, and blessing of their new restaurant on
August 2nd. We were all grateful to be treated to a delicious lunch after.
On August 22nd Buffalo Wild Wings located at 5370 US Hwy 10 East in Stevens Point held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the restaurant’s new look. The Ambassadors and
PCBC Staff got a first glimpse at the exciting renovations.
PCBC Proudly Presents:Meet Your Ambassador
Brad Veara
Ansay & Associates, LLC
How long have you been an Ambassador?I have been an ambassador since January 2017.
Why did you choose to become an Ambassador?I chose to be an Ambassador because of my grandfather. My grandfatherwas a charter member of the New Holstein Lions Club and received theMelvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2012. I know how much he was involved in his community. Since his passing, and Stevens Point being my home, I always wanted to be involved and help my community in any way possible. I looked at many different programs, and I thought that an Ambassador for the Portage County Business Council is the best way I could get involved.
What do you enjoy about being an Ambassador? The thing I enjoy the most about being an Ambassador, is I get to meet new people every day. I like connecting with business owners and being the good will arm for them to connect to other business owners. Also, I enjoy every Ribbon Cutting, seeing the smiles on the owners/managers faces when they talk about their business. You can really tell how much passion they have for their industry and what they are doing.
What is one interesting fact about you that most people do not know?I can do a pretty good Carl Spackler impression from Caddyshack.

The Portage County Business Council hosted a Partners In Education (PIE) Social on Wednesday, August 23rd. New teachers from each district in the community were invited to attend along with other faculty/staff from their school and community businesses. The link between business and education is an important one, as teachers are preparing their students for the world of work. Valuable conversations were held at the event, which featured free appetizers and drinks. In addition, six teachers were announced as the 2017 Golden Apple Excellence in Education Award winners.
The teachers are:
Bill HaasRosholt Elementary School
Tanya HoffmanWashington Elementary, Stevens Point Area Public Schools
Mike SchmollPacelli High School, Pacelli Catholic Schools
Sara FischerMcDill Elementary, Stevens Point Area Public Schools

To learn more about these teachers and view the nominations, please go to www.portagecountybiz.com/pie. Each teacher will be formally recognized in a ceremony at their school.
Special thanks to Skyward who hosted the social and provided a beautiful space for teachers and businesses to network.
Good luck to all the educators, and students, returning to school this week! Thank you for all you do in our community!

The Leadership Portage County opening retreat, held Thursday, August 17 and Friday, August 18 allowed these participants to dive in to leadership development and get to know one another through interactive activities. Participants were taught how to live with an Outward Mindset.
This coursework, facilitated by Wendy Mitch, is an Arbinger Institute curriculum and gives innovative ways to approach personal and professional relationships. Participants also enjoyed a County history tour from local historian Anton Anday and the annual LPC Road
Rally scavenger hunt with their teams. The next LPC session is September 21 and is themed on Agriculture. Highlights include a visit to Heartland Farms and Feltz Family Farms.
