mud by nestPerfect additions for gift wrapping and gorgeous decorations,

Kim Redpath handcrafts each individual piece with love in her mud kitchen

Can you tell us a bit about Mud by Nest:Mud by Nest is my handmade collection of clay tags inspired by my love of colour, texture, the coast and a little sparkle.Affectionately known as mud tags, I design, hand make, photograph and package each individual clay tag myself with love from my mud kitchen. My clay tags are a perfect addition as a gift tag for wrapping special gifts - they can then be kept as a lovely decorative keepsake. If you love to make your own homemade treats, they can be tied around jars, baked loaves and boxes of treats or bunches of flowers. They are gorgeous tied around napkins at a table setting, or can be hung as decorative pieces around the nest.Names or little messages can be written

upon them or tied to baskets and boxes to keep your nest sorted. There are endless ways to use, share and enjoy my little mud tags.

Tell us about yourself and your background:I am a mum of two gorgeous noisy boys. They are the heart of my nest and my reality check that make me smile and laugh every day.Having my children opened a new world of opportunities and creativity for me to explore with my career. After a fabulous career as a Flight Attendant and trainer, my husband and I went and travelled and lived in London for some time which was where I worked and studied Interior Design.

Returning to Australia I worked for and managed a Homeware Store whilst also starting and working my own styling business, Nest.I was then blessed to have time to be home with my babies. An opportunity to make a sea change to a gorgeous coastal town from the city came at a time when I was ready to work again, preferably from home to maintain a work/mummy life balance.Through my styling work I made some clay tags for a gorgeous table setting, I had found a creative outlet I had been searching for and Mud by Nest was created.

What sparked you to create Mud by Nest?Through my Nest Styling business I styled an outdoor Easter table setting and wanted a different little touch to tie to napkins at each place setting that wouldn’t blow in the wind and that each guest could take home - my first four clay tags were born - Mr Rabbit, Ms Bird, Egg and Heart. They were loved and I loved making them, so I made some more for friends and gifts. My friends then wanted to buy them to use and share themselves.Whilst making them one day, my kitchen table covered in clay, I was trying to think what I could call them if was to make this a small business. In bounded my then very wise and muddy 4 year old who questioned me “Mummy what are doing with all of this Mud inside?!” Although at the time I thought

my mud was far more fun and beautiful than the mud he was covered in, it was perfect and so it stuck, Mud by Nest.I then started selling my tags at local markets on weekends with lots of early starts, but loved feeling like I had my own store. I also held some fun ‘mud’ parties. One day a friend suggested I sell my tags online. At the time I really didn’t think it was possible for someone I didn’t know or hadn’t met face to face to buy something I loved making. Taking my tags online changed everything. The power of online enabled me to connect and sell to the most lovely and creative people, all from the comfort of my little beach nest. I had found my balance, and I haven’t looked back since.

What do you love the most about having your own label?

I am grateful every day that I am able to work from home and have the flexibility of time to be mum too. It’s not always easy working from home though, you need to work hard at finding and keeping a balance of work and family, and to be organised and self-motivated. The temptation to just do ‘one more thing’ for work is always there too, so I try my hardest to set work hours, and 3pm my mud kitchen closes. Night times I usually catch up on admin or do a few more of those ‘one more things’! I love that I have had the opportunity to collaborate my clay tags and work with some very talented creatives. I feel very privileged when I am asked to make my tags to collaborate with someone else’s product that they too have put their heart into. I also very much love the appreciation from my customers and stockists.

Page 12: Winkelen december 2014

< continued from previous pageI love being sent pictures of how customers have wrapped gifts or used their mud tags to decorate their nests. The ideas of what and how you can use a little mud tag are endless, I love how people get creative with my tags.I get very overwhelmed to see my tags displayed so gorgeously by my lovely stockiest in their beautiful homeware and florist stores. I am very grateful.

What inspired you to make christmas pieces?Christmas is my most busiest time of the year as there are so many ways you can use my little mud tags for the festive season.I am a big lover of having a Christmas theme, be it colour, texture or any inspiration that suits your nest. This year I have created a mud tag to suit almost every Christmas theme - sand and

shell stars for a coastal Christmas, silver sparkly wish stars for a little magic. Beautiful embossed patterns and neutral white tags to go with any colour theme you choose for Christmas and of course the fun of colour with polka dots and splashes of colour!Stars are always a must at Christmas, but a little tiny mud reindeer just has to be the cutest. This year my table will be set with white linen and my copper polka dot stars.

What makes christmas special for you?I love the magic of Christmas and want my boys to treasure the magic too. Christmas carols playing in the shops, those old Christmas movies that pop up each year. For me the joy and excitement of the lead up to Christmas is just as special as on Christmas day. I love planning my colour theme, table setting, gift wrapping and the menu for the day.

I love that we make time to catch up with friends before Christmas, for whom I love to make a little homemade gift.As a family we sprinkle glitter oats on the lawns so the reindeers can find us, set up notes and beer and treats for Santa and make sure the sacks are at the end of the beds. Christmas Eve is always watching the Carols with a glass of bubbles, then waking up to all that is magic Christmas morning, where even the reindeers have left a mess of chocolate droppings everywhere. I still remember being too scared to walk down the hall as a little girl in the morning in case Santa was still there. I love to keep the magic alive.

What are you top 5 ideas for great christmas decorations?• Choose a colour theme for your gift

wrapping, table setting and tree trimming

Page 13: Winkelen december 2014

and have loads of fun with it.• Always make a gift look too good to open.

I love to wrap in white paper then add my pop of colour with beautiful ribbon... and of course a little clay tag.

• Put up a Christmas tree. Even if you are not going to be home for Christmas you can still enjoy it for a short time before you go. I always get me boys to help me hang the decorations (which I may or may not rearrange slightly afterwards), we play Christmas carols really loudly and they get so excited when the lights turn on for the first time...they just sit in front of the tree and stare and smile.

• Light up the front of your house with lights, it is so lovely driving around at night time seeing the spirit of Christmas. I hang the white icicle lights along the front of the house and have one of those adorable moving reindeers on the grass.

• Dress your table. I love to sit down to

a meal with a table cloth and napkins. Choose some gorgeous bonbons to match your theme, use your best plates, cutlery and glasses. I like little vases of fresh flowers down the middle of the table and a little bunch of herbs and cinnamon tied to each napkin, oh and a little clay tag.

Where do you shop for your christmas decor and gift wrapping?I love to support handmade and small businesses where ever I can. Online shopping for me is such a saver as living in a regional town I don’t get to shop in the big city often and as I am so busy working at this time of year it is a big time saver for me too. There are so many lovely creative and talented makers and sellers online, Instagram is a great platform to discover them. Support small business and shop handmade.

What plans do you have for celebrating this year? The months before Christmas are crazy busy for me getting all my mud tags out to my lovely stockists before the rush of online sales comes thru. Its very constant and I literally work every day, so by the time Christmas day comes my poor little hands have stopped working and I switch off completely.Christmas day starts with the magic of waking up to the joy of my little nesters, enjoying the gift of giving, making sure the table is set, working together as a family in the kitchen to prepare lunch and indulging in a bottle of French Champagne!

one two treeLooking for an alternative to the traditional Christmas tree? Then why not try this

eco friendly timber tree designed by Lucy McNamara and Antony Aris

Have an eco Christmas with One Two Tree.Made in Australia from sustainable timber, One Two Tree is the eco-friendly alternative to the artificial Christmas trees or wasteful one-season plantation trees.Featuring a contemporary design One Two Tree is an easy to assemble hand-crafted wooden tree - made from sustainable Australian timbers, Hoop pine and Tasmanian oak. When it came to celebrating their family Christmas with a young child One Two Tree creators Lucy McNamara and Antony Aris searched for a stylish alternative to

plantation and plastic Christmas trees.McNamara said: “We struggled to find a tree that was compact, suited our style and could withstand our two year old tornado Ziggy. Antony (a landscaper) had been working with hoop pine slats on a project and made a makeshift tree from the offcuts, and we’ve used it every year since.” When friends kept asking for a tree of their own, the entrepreneurial couple realised there was a market for their design, and One Two Tree was born. Standing 85cm when assembled, One Two Tree is perfectly proportioned for apartments

and the ideal focal point for a mantelpiece or foyer in larger homes. Featuring 26 adjustable branches One Two Tree is assembled in minutes and packs away flat for easy storage in its packaging which is just as eco friendly and design oriented as the product itself. With its durable structure and timeless design, One Two Tree is sure to be a favourite Christmas feature for years to come.

bauble keepsakesJulia Stephens is the talent behind Summer Svenson with her gorgeous personalised baubles

Can you tell us a bit about Summer Svenson?Summer Svenson started as a little experiment a couple of years ago when I found myself home full time with a baby. I loved making personalised gifts for my friends, family and workmates, and found I was often being asked to make things for others. So my idea was to start a small business in my spare time, doing something that I love - art and crafting! At this time of year, I hand paint clear keepsake baubles and fill them up with pretty fillings (like beads or pom poms) and send them out gift boxed. I can personalise with almost any name or message, with space being the only limitation.

I sell from two sites- etsy and the delightful Down that Little Lane. I’m a one woman team, so I do everything myself from assembling gift boxes to painting to loading up my car with boxes bound for the post office. On top of lots of baby’s first Christmas, Newlyweds, and straightforward names, I’ve found myself painting special keepsake baubles for parents who’ve lost a baby, or child, so I’ve also had some really touching and special orders come through. I also love to create Mexican style tin art, which I do year round. I make ornaments and framed pieces in silver and copper, paint wooden eggs at Easter, as well as straightforward oil and acrylic paintings.

Page 21: Winkelen december 2014

Tell us about yourself and your background?I spent ten years working in television production as an Associate Producer, mostly in lifestyle and reality television before having my son, Freddy. These days when I’m not working I love to hang out with my two boys- Freddy and my husband, Nick.

What inspired you to create Christmas pieces?I love Christmas, and love making keepsakes, so I discovered a little niche I could try. It seemed the perfect time of year as the basis for a small business.

Which piece in your collection is a must have for Christmas?Cursive name baubles – classic keepsakes forever.

What makes Christmas special for you?Delicious food, the evocative smell of pine

needles, family and the feeling of festivity. What are your top 5 ideas for great Christmas decorations?• A Christmas wreath is a must. For an easy

DIY, this year I’ll be making mine from dried Eucalyptus leaves I’ve been spying at the park and spraying it up in a poppy glossy colour.

• With little kids in the house, my precious vintage glass baubles will be strung up high on string around the living room - pretty and practical.

• A gingerbread house on display - fun to make, smells delicious and, best of all, a treat to eat!

• Personalised baubles on the tree, of course- for a special touch!

Where do you shop for your Christmas décor and gift wrapping?Ikea is always on trend and reasonably priced for decorations which are updated

every year, whilst David Jones always has beautiful rolls of paper and trims. Last year, I bought brown craft paper, and made oversized fluro tassels from ribbon I found in the bargain bin at Spotlight- it was cheap and cheerful all the way!

What plans do you have for celebrating this year?I’m excited this year as my son will be two and a half, and has a pretty good grasp of Santa and presents. He’s been asking for a “pipette” (cricket) bat, so I can’t wait for him to open that one. I’ll be heavily pregnant by the time Christmas Day rolls around, so my number one aim will probably be to stay cool. Usually we drink and be merry, but because of the babe on the way I have a feeling this year will be pretty low key.

attik(72)Get inspired this Christmas with Jessen Pipiciello’s iconic illustration

window decal ‘Le Premier Noel’ and French Christmas collection

Can you tell us a bit about Attik(72)?ATTIK(72) homewares feature design and typography work across a collection of pieces including cushions, wall flags, limited edition art prints and hand-printed stationery. We also run as a design studio for creative services in advertising and print - providing graphic design, illustration, hand-typography and photography. Our products are handmade here in studio, the attic space of our home - once the old ‘Beach Corner Store’. It’s filled with light and has a window to the sea. During the summer we also open up our home and studio for a Design Pop-Up store.

Tell us about yourself and your background?I grew up on Sydney’s beaches, spending a

lot of my time in my parents design studio and went on to study photography.I’ve loved working across a mix of graphic and product design, illustration, styling and photography. A normal day for me looks like - an early coffee and jump in the sea, then back to the attic either designing, photographing or illustrating for the day.

What inspired you to create Christmas pieces? Our French Christmas collection was inspired by French Carols - 8 French illustrative designs as window decals, t-towels and cards. Each products packaging features the French Carol it was inspired by with the English translation and equivalent tune.

Which piece in your collection is a must have for Christmas? For decoration - our ‘Le Premier Noel’ window decal is an iconic illustration and the signature piece to our Christmas collection. For a gift - Our Antler Flag X is our most loved wall piece. It’s hand-made in our attic with naturally shed antlers collected in the wild of New Zealand, and attached is a hand-stiched X flag and rope ready to hang.

What makes Christmas special for you?Spending time with family and friends, long beach days with good food, and celebrating what christmas is really about.

starry starry night wall hanging

Page 31: Winkelen december 2014

ITEMS YOU WILL NEED:• Paper doilies• Marble or printed paper• Balsa Wood Sticks (available

from Bunnings)• Craft Glue• Scissors• Butter knife• Pencil• Metallic Gold Spray Paint• Clear thread• Sticky tape• Branch from yard• Gold cord for hanging

STEP ONE: On a scrap piece of paper, sketch a 5 pointed star (or print one from the internet!) and use this as your template to sketch onto your marbled paper. In case you’re wondering – I found this marble texture online and had it printed at Officeworks.

STEP TWO: Cut out the stars then turn it over and use your butter knife to score lines from the stars points to the centre, and then flip the star over again and score lines from the inner corners to the centre. Fold your star so it forms a 3D shape. I left mine one-sided but if you want a complete 3D shape use sticky tape to fasten another star to the back.

STEP THREE: Cut your balsa wood sticks in half with scissors then glue them together into stacks of 4 with craft glue. Leave to dry.

STEP FOUR: Collect a branch from outside and spray paint gold, also spray your paper doilies. Do this in a well-ventilated area and to avoid overspray, spray inside a large box turned on its side. When the paper doilies are dry, trace your star shapes and cut/score/fold.

STEP FIVE: Tie some gold cord either side of the branch and hang on the wall, now you can start stringing your pieces. Use sticky tape to fasten the thread to each ornament and tie to your branch at various heights.

Fiona Michelon from Craft Hunter shows you how to add your own personal touch to Christmas with this stunning star wall hanging

TIP: All done! I recommend hanging in a part of your house that doesn’t get much of a breeze so that your ornaments stay put perfectly, but if this isn’t possible, fasten troublesome pieces to the wall with blue tac.

pom pom stockingTry your hand at this cute pom pom Christmas stocking by Fiona Michelon from Craft Hunter

Page 33: Winkelen december 2014

STEP ONE: Sketch out your stocking shape onto the white fabric and cut with a 1cm border. Place onto a 2nd piece of white fabric and cut out.

STEP TWO: Cut a scallop shape from your gold fabric – you’ll need really sharp scissors for this part!

STEP THREE: Pop your scallop inside your two stocking pieces and pin it all in place, flip it the right way around to check you’re happy with the positioning, then flip it back and sew around the outside in a simple straight stitch, leaving the top of the stocking open. If you don’t own a sewing machine, this can be just sewn by hand.

STEP FOUR: Now to attach your patterned top. Cut two pieces of fabric, which are 3cm wider than the existing stocking. Place face down onto the stocking and pin in place on one side of the stocking then sew across. Flip the stocking over and repeat on the other side.

STEP FIVE: Pin then sew straight down the side of each piece. You should be leaving about 1cm each side of the stocking so it sits nice and chunky on top. Flip your stocking the right side out and now just start to roll the fabric down into place.

STEP SIX: To create the pom poms, cut a 30cm piece of yarn and double over and place inside the middle of the fork for tying later. Now grab your yarn and start wrapping around the fork – the more yarn you do the fluffier your pom pom will be! When you’re done, use your earlier piece to tie a knot around the middle really tightly. Now cut the yarn either side of the fork and watch your pom pom come to life. Fluff it up and spend some time trimming it so it’s all nice and even.Cut a 10cm piece of yarn and tie to the pom poms, then attach them to the inside the stocking’s top with a few hand stitches.Cut a small piece of the patterned fabric and fasten to the top corner of the stocking with some hand stitches, and you’re ready to hang!

SHELF/LIFEJess Ibbett adds a touch of festive cheer with her selection of local designer pieces that are simple and functional

Can you tell us a bit about SHELF/LIFE?SHELF/LIFE is an online store based on the concept of good design, where aesthetics, function and sustainability are integral to all the products we offer. We believe in quality, impeccable workmanship and ethical awareness and curate our range to showcase pieces that are simple, timeless and functional. We love to share the story behind each of our products so that our customers can feel connected to our makers and designers, and we hope that these items will be both treasured and used as part of one’s everyday routine. This year we have also launched our online styling service that follows on from our shop’s philosophy and provides an accessible entry point for those looking for interior design and styling assistance.

Tell us about yourself and your background?I studied Interior Architecture at UNSW and went on to work in the industry for a few years before opening SHELF/LIFE with my husband in 2009. We had a lovely brick and mortar shop in Surry Hills for almost four years before moving exclusively online last year. I am hoping this decision will eventually result in more time for me to get back to making and creating, something I used to love doing before I got serious about interior design.

What inspired you to supply Christmas pieces? We have always loved supplying festive pieces in the shop and tend to support our favourite local designers and their gorgeous ranges. Australian Christmases are generally about entertaining and so we think our everyday ranges work well alongside our Christmas pieces for a touch of festive cheer!

Page 49: Winkelen december 2014

Which piece in your collection is a must have for Christmas? My personal favourites are the Vintage Lace ornaments by Kim Wallace. They are simple, classic and beautifully crafted, and fit perfectly with any festive theme you have in mind.

What makes Christmas special for you? This year our daughter will be one just before Christmas so family time is definitely our priority. I am so excited to start some new festive traditions with her and continue some that have been in my family since I was a little kid.

What are your top 5 ideas for great Christmas decorations?1. Pick a few colours, say 3 or 4, which you

love as a starting point for your decorating. They don’t have to be traditional – fun, fresh summery colours look great against a backdrop of green pine needles too!

2. Have fun making things yourself. I believe the best decorations are those made with love. To me, Christmas is about family and

giving so get your loved ones involved and enjoy the process of making garlands, wreaths and gift wrap together.

3. Select a few special ornaments for your tree. Instead of buying baubles in bulk, why not choose one or 2 classic ornaments to add to your collection each year so that every Christmas as you add an ornament to the tree you can reminisce about the previous years’ celebrations.

4. Fresh flowers add to the summery feel of Christmas in Australia. Choose blooms in your chosen colour scheme and they will bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

5. If you’d prefer not to have a real tree or don’t have the space, a vase with bare branches is a great alternative to displaying your favourite decorations.

What plans do you have for celebrating this year?I will be indulging in seafood and sweets, spending a lot of time in the water and catching up with friends and family while we’re all nice and relaxed.

Inspired by Japanese Shinto Kumi-ki puzzles, Weeks designed these sculptures as a non-traditional take on the toy robot by joining ancient Japanese traditions with contemporary toy culture. Their sturdy hardwood frames can hold hundreds of poses and when playtime is over, they each neatly fold up into unassuming cubes.

Located in Margaret River in Western Australia, they have a philosophy of ‘Bean to Bar’ and this is beautifully expressed in this chocolate bar, using beans from a Bahia plantation once lost in the Jungles of the Mata Atlantica. little puddlesGetting crafty with fabulous Christmas wreaths by Natalie Gurney

Can you tell us a bit about Little Puddles?Little Puddles is all about a love of handmade and inspiring others to be creative. It’s filled with the things I love to make and the supplies I love to craft with. I’m forever inspired by my gorgeous girls, and as such my range evolves as my family evolves. I just want to make pretty things.

Tell us about yourself and your background? My background is in human resources, but I’ve always had a crafty side, inspired and nurtured by my crafty mama who makes the most beautiful stitcheries and quilts. I love to learn new crafts and decorate my home with colourful and quirky creations. Over time the idea of a craft business grew and has developed into something more than expected. I’m lucky enough to come from a family that has always been supportive and close, and as such, I’ve been able to put more time into Little Puddles to grow it more and more each year. I’m so proud of how far it’s come…but there’s a long way to go and I’m excited to develop it further.

What inspired you to create Christmas pieces?Christmas is my favourite time of year, I absolutely love decorating the house and watching my girls getting excited about Santa. My mum collects porcelain Santa

figurines and decorates her entire lounge and dining area with them every year, they are just so beautiful.I try to collect one special Christmas decoration each year to add to my collection. I love the idea of slowly growing my collection of beautiful Christmas pieces to be lovingly brought out each year to celebrate, and to think that others may be doing this with my Christmas pieces that I create brings me a lot of happiness.

Which piece in your collection is a must have for Christmas?I think the Christmas wreaths are just so fun! I love my little deer friends, they are the icing on the cake for me! And I love the idea of buying one special item every Christmas that will be special for years to come.

What makes Christmas special for you?I just love the Christmas spirit! Spending time thinking of friends and family, finding presents that would be just perfect for each and every one of them. Watching my girls getting excited about Santa… I enjoy it even more now. And the food… I love the food.

What are your top 5 ideas for great Christmas decorations? 1. Never underestimate the beauty of

handmade, even if your creation doesn’t turn out exactly as you saw it in your mind, we can be too critical on ourselves and more often than not, others will be blown away by your creation!

2. There is no such thing as too much colour!3. Christmas themes are fantastic, but I

always love to buy one special piece that works every year, no matter what the colour scheme. It’s so lovely to open the Christmas decorations box each year and be enveloped in memories of previous celebrations.

4. Fairy lights are a must… all year round actually.

5. There is a wealth of inspiration out there, check out Instagram, online mazagines, blogs, Pinterest… wherever your fancy takes you.

Where do you shop for your Christmas décor and gift wrapping?I’m lucky to be surrounded and inspired by amazingly clever and creative small businesses during market season whom I love to support, so I usually keep an eye out for pretty wrapping and decor at the markets I attend each week. I just bought some beautiful white and gold chevron wrapping paper from Inky & Co at the recent Finders Keepers market in Melbourne… it’s almost too pretty to cut in to.

Page 61: Winkelen december 2014

What plans do you have for celebrating this year?We always go to see the Christmas lights at the Boulevard in Ivanhoe, it’s a family tradition which we absolutely love, it’s so beautiful! And Christmas Eve is spent watching the Polar Express and drinking hot chocolate, never mind how warm the weather is.Christmas Day is all about spending time with family and friends, eating more than my fair share of food and enjoying some relaxing time after the busy lead up to the Christmas season.

CONCRETE CHRISTMAS TREE

GINA CIANCIOSTYLE CURATOR is a blog for people who appreciate design and want regular inspiration and ideas to create a more stylish home.At STYLE CURATOR you’ll find original articles about upcoming artists and other makers, how-tos, top finds for your home and interviews with people in the industry.

www.stylecurator.com.au

Gina Ciancio from STYLE CURATOR shows us how to create your own concrete Christmas trees in five easy steps

Page 71: Winkelen december 2014

DIYITEMS YOU WILL NEED:• Concrete• Sand• Gold paint (we used Haymes

Gold Dabs)• Plastic sheet (we picked ours

up from IKEA)• Bucket• Stirrer• Paint brush• Scissors• Sticky tape

STEP ONE: Mix up the concrete using 1 cup concrete, 1 cup sand and ½ cup water.

STEP TWO: Create a plastic cone by rolling a piece of heavy plastic sheet on an angle. Sticky tape the sheet in place and seal the tip of the cone with a piece of sticky tape.

STEP THREE: Burry the cone ¾ deep in the remaining bucket of sand to secure it in place and fill with concrete.

STEP FOUR: Allow to dry for 24 hours. If it feels like it might tip over during this time, gently position some objects around the cone to ensure it stays put.

STEP FIVE: Once the cone of concrete is completely dry, remove the plastic sheet and paint the tip of the cone in gold paint. If you don’t have a steady hand, you can masking tape around the tip to ensure you get a precise finish.

We love these stylish concrete Christmas trees and think they look best when you cluster 2-3 together in different sizes.

TIPS:• Make sure the concrete is completely dry before you remove the

cone from the plastic or your tree will crumble• If you are making several trees, try rolling the plastic at different

angles to create different shape trees and in a variety of sizes.

paper elephantUsing the vintage letterpress technique Nykke Coleman creates lovely Christmas cards and tags that add a little touch of luxury to any gift

Can you tell us a bit about Paper Elephant? We produce our own range of stationery products as well as designing and printing custom work for others, mostly wedding invitations. We use a vintage technique called letterpress printing that dates back hundreds of years. We print each hand mixed colour one at a time and use beautiful eco friendly papers.

Tell us about yourself and your background?Having been a designer in almost every field over the last … well, too many years, I was eager to ‘do my own thing’. In 2010 that dream became a reality when we purchased our lovely old 1963 Heidelberg printing press, and Paper Elephant was born. I had always had a love of paper and letterforms as a child, so most of our designs have a strong typographical theme, as well as being a little cheeky, and feature lovely paper stock.

What inspired you to create Christmas stationery?I am a big kid at heart. I love Christmas. It’s a time for family, and a time to show people that you think about them and care. We make lovely Christmas cards and tags that add a little touch of luxury to any gift or are beautiful on their own.

What makes Christmas special for you? It’s a time to spend with family and relax, to leave all the dramas of life and business behind for a day and watch my kids light up with joy. And if we are lucky, and it’s a nice chilly mountain day, we get to have a lovely hot Christmas lunch too.

What are your top 5 ideas for great Christmas decorations?• | Glass ornaments (if there are no small

children or animals attacking the tree, so we haven’t used ours for a few years)

• Free form tinsel to mimic icicles• Anything red, each year I throw in an

accent colour but mostly everything is red• Decorations with a personal touch, this

year I have had personalised ceramic decorations custom made for every member of the family

• and LOTS of sparkly lights

What is a must have item for your Christmas table?Donna Hay’s roast pumpkin salad. It’s been a tradition since 2001 when the first issue of her magazine launched and our entire Christmas feast came from those pages. The salad became a Christmas staple.

What plans do you have for celebrating this year?We don’t make specific plans, it’s more freeform. We prefer to keep it intimate and quiet. (Well as quiet as three children can make it that is.)

Can you tell us a bit about Treekandi?Treekandi is a removable reusable wallpaper Christmas tree kit. It is your Christmas tree in a box. It comes with tree, lights, batteries, clips and decorations, even a star for the top!

Tell us about yourself and your background?I am interior stylist/consultant and love my job. Plus decal designer.

they make great decorations.• Fairy lights everywhere, love the

ambience they create.• Mistletoe – love a kiss underneath it!• Making paper mache decorations using

balloons as moulds – decorate with the kids. Fun!

• Putting holly on top of your pictures all around the house.

Where do you shop for your Christmas décor and gift wrapping?I tend to go for white gloss paper and then find indulgent ribbons.

What plans do you have for celebrating this year?Off to London and then Somerset. Log fires and mulled wine and huge family gatherings.

you can get twelve stunning paintings displayed in her new 2015 wall calendar

CALENDAR SPECIAL

Page 85: Winkelen december 2014

Belinda Marshall is a Melbourne-based artist and surface designer. She works mainly with acrylic on wood and linen. Her work is an exploration of emotional reactions to the beauty within her immediate environment. A connection to her experience of an idyllic country landscape during childhood drives the need to portray the beauty found in domestic settings and urban landscapes in her work. Her paintings depict her vision of a perfect world - an inner world that can be accessed through a calm, meditative process - communicated through layers of colour, and shapes or sections of pattern. She only focuses only on what resonates and draws her in. By expressing observations of beautiful encounters and moments in her work, she aims to create a space for the viewer to form a deeper connection to his or her secret, unspoken world and to access the contentment that can be experienced from this process.Belinda has just released her new 2015 Wall Calendar which features twelve paintings with one full page image featured each month and is printed in Melbourne on recycled paper with vegetable inks.
