4-H Team Update

With the turn of a calendar page, we begin a new year as we continue the 4-H work already started this fall. As we look back, we can reflect on many accomplishments earned by our 4-H members, positive impacts made through volunteer service, an enjoyable county fair, and so much more! Many of these achievements are the result of individuals like you setting goals to make them happen – thank you for your efforts in Winnebago County 4-H in 2015! Have you considered your goals for 2016? To 4-H members: you have the power to set achievable goals in your project work and services to report them in your record book! To 4-H leaders: you have the opportunity to guide youth members through project exploration and setting goals for your project meetings, plans, and outcomes! To all 4-H clubs: Continue working towards your goals as reported in your annual charter! Even our 4-H Leaders Association Board of Directors sets yearly goals to guide their efforts. Are you sensing a theme here? All of us are a part of setting and working towards goals that make an impact personally and influence our 4-H Youth Development Program in Winnebago County. This includes your 4-H Team at the UWEX office! Below, we share some of our goals with you because we want you to know what we are working to achieve, just as you share with us! What kind of goals are you setting for yourself? Is there something new you want to learn this year? How will you do it? Who might you need to ask for assistance in this goal? Does it have a timeframe? Is it something that is dependent on your efforts (not a judge’s decision, like receiving a blue ribbon)? Does your goal have measurable steps? Take some time to write a goal or two! Wishing you a positive outlook in 2016 as you plan and achieve!

My goal for 2016 is to strengthen the 4-H presence online by updating and reorganizing the 4-H pages on our UW-Extension website based on needs, uploading new forms, and making it more user friendly. If you have any suggestions or anything you would like to see on our website, please email me and let me know!

Throughout the year, I will support 4-H club leaders by promoting available resources for project areas and methods of teaching. A second goal is that by the end of 2016, I will have visited at least 10 of our 4-H clubs!

A goal of mine is to include 4-H Club leaders and members in the facilitation of 4-H activities in the After School setting. A second goal is to create another STEM-related club similar to LEGO Club!

DOTS Day Recap What an awesome day of discovery and wonder we had on Saturday, December 12! Marc Nutter, a naturalist from Upham Woods was here to lead a program that got us outside looking at nature and the things around us. We made observations, both with technology and without. We also explored the prairie area near the JPCC using the tools in the DOTS kit---calculating air temperatures and wind speed using a weather station, determining the coldest and warmest objects around using an infrared thermometer, sketching pictures of what things looked like after looking through a thermal imager, exploring living objects with a microscope and seeing the images on an i-Pad, and so much more. Our day was documented with digital cameras. Check out the photos in the newsletter. The trail camera also got some interesting pictures---the wildlife around here is amazing! Do you know that you can use these tools at Upham Woods at Winter Camp and also at Summer Camp? Contact the office if you have questions.

Congratulations! Volunteers of the Month Carol and Terry Beck have been selected as volunteers of the month for November and December! They have been nominated due to their continuous leadership and volunteering their time in the Golden Oak 4-H Club and at the county level, in addition to their various family commitments. Thank you, Carol and Terry for all you do! For future nominations, send an email to Kayla with the name of a leader and a brief description of their recent volunteer service! Help us recognize our leaders each month for their service and commitment to our 4-H program!

Annual Leader Training In November, leaders from many clubs attended a training to learn about planning successful project meetings. We hope that these re-sources in planning a calendar of meetings, setting goals, and using new teaching methods have been shared with project leaders. If you are a project leader and are looking for resources to help you teach our 4-H members, contact Kayla with your questions!

Experiential Learning Model In 4-H, we use the Experiential Learning Model of Do-Reflect-Apply. This model is used every time a 4-H member “learns by doing.” As 4-H leaders, you help young people learn by providing opportunities for them to learn as they complete a project, try something new, or work on a community service project. First, you encourage them to “do” the task, next the young people “reflect” through sharing or processing what they have done, and then they “apply” through connecting this experience to something similar that they might do or see. Consider how you can continue to boost your members to “learn by doing” through: Promoting group discussions and brainstorms prior to an activity Keeping records of meetings – helpful for county record books for

youth and having them recall and reflect what they accomplished

Creative learning through games, skits, or role playing

4-H Fundraisers

4-H FUR & FEATHER CAGE PROJECT

After 25 years of use, our current rabbit and poultry cages for the fair are bent and broken and the bottoms are deteriorated. The Winnebago County 4-H Fur & Feather Cage Project Committee has organized a campaign to fund 400 new cages, cage bottoms, and wheeled storage racks with a goal of $12,000 by March 31, 2016. Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated! Donors of $50 or more will be recognized on a donor plaque at the following levels: Bronze $50-99, Silver $100-199, Gold $200 and above. Your contributions will help provide a safe environment for animals and an appealing exhibit for Winnebago County Fair visitors. 4-H Rabbit and Poultry projects provide opportunities for youth to learn while having fun! Youth, parents, and leaders are all welcome to help! You don’t have to be in 4-H or in the rabbit or poultry projects to participate. Would you, your family or your club like to help sponsor new cages? Does your employer offers donations, grants or matching grants for non-profit groups? Are there businesses or organizations who would support us? To make a donation or to help us obtain funding, please contact Cindy Giddings at 920-685-2843 or [email protected] . Brochures and Thank You/Receipts are available upon request.

Dairy Project

Greetings Dairy Project members! We hope you all enjoyed the holiday season to the fullest. Now it’s time to get started on projects for the New Year. There will be lots of things happening, so stay tuned for updates. If you have any questions, please email the Dairy Committee at [email protected]

Educational Workshops Hopefully, everyone has received a registration form in the mail for the upcoming workshops. If you haven’t already, sign up for the educational workshops coming January-April. These 90-minute sessions will provide excellent hands-on activities to expand your knowledge of dairy cattle and the industry. Please register with Michelle at the Extension Office. Workshops will be at the JPCC. Topics to be covered are: Dairy Cattle Nutrition and Showmanship Skills. Special guest speakers will be sharing their knowledge on each topic. Come join the fun! Dates: Dairy Animal Nutrition will be offered on

January 18, and March 21, from 7-8:30 pm. Showmanship Basics will be on February 15, and April 18, from 7-8:30 pm. The Calf Corner 2016 There have been a couple changes to The Calf Corner this year. There will still be a calf separate from the exhibitors’ animals for public to pet and take pictures. Also, to make things easier during the week of the fair, clubs will not be required to hand out goodie bags to fair goers walking through the barn. This year, the only criteria for clubs to receive the $35 stipend, sponsored by Farm Bureau, will be to create a poster on one topic related to the dairy industry. In order to keep things fair, topics will be drawn from a hat and assigned to each club. Topic assignments will be emailed to leaders in April. This is still an optional activity. Clubs not wishing to participate simply will not submit a poster. New topics will be assigned each year.

New this year, we will be holding brief sub-committee meetings immediately following the Horse and Pony Project meeting. To attend these meetings, you do not need to be a member of the Horse and Pony Advisory Board. We encourage fresh and new ideas from all of our project members! Did you know that the Horse and Pony Project has a mentorship program for anyone in the project that is looking to grow in the horse project? Anyone interested can fill out an application that can be found on the UW-Extension office website and on Facebook and the mentorship committee will match a mentor with a mentee. If you have any questions contact CJ Charniak or Lea Ann Schneider. Website Address to Mentorship Application: http://winnebago.uwex.edu/files/2010/09/Winnebago-County-Mentor-Program.pdf Starting in January, we will strive to offer an educational opportunity each month. We are welcoming suggestions from our project members on topics they are interested in learning about. If you have any topics of interest or questions, please feel free to contact Kayla Ellis or Buffy Carroll. Are you interested in or thinking of joining the Horse Bowl / Judging team? Here you are able to compete in horse trivia competitions with a team. If you are interested, contact Hannah Stedl or Wendy Wright Stabler for more information. Remember to sign up on the 4HOnline enrollment as a youth or adult leader to be eligible to vote at any of the project meetings! If you are graduating high school this year, let Mabel Plueddeman or Becky Ellis know ASAP. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook at Winnebago County 4H Horse and Pony Project and also remember to watch your email for updates.

Remember your birds for fair need to be 4 months old by mid-July--no exceptions. This is a state law all birds have to be blood tested to be shown at a fair this means they need to be 4 months old or older. Another good reason to have a bird 4 months old or older, is they can be sexed and breed identified. Remember All birds shown this year need to come from Flocks that have been Full Flock Tested (Chickens, Ducks, Geese…...Pigeons do NOT need testing). You can test now, get your test done early at the lowest point of adult birds in your flock and your young birds will be included. There will be no tests done after July 15, so please plan ahead. Hatchery purchased birds do not make good show birds, most are crossbreds, or do not follow a breed standard. Birds from the Co-op (ie red or black sex link), leghorns, RIR and even Australorps are production birds and also don’t make a good show bird. The exception is Cornish Cross, they are a 10 week project for anyone new to poultry, or someone who is not interested in keeping birds over winter. http://fyi.uwex.edu/poultry/files/2012/05/Raising-Roasters-Broilers.pdf I have Black Minorca, Pure Ameraucana, Splash Rocks, Black Langshan, RIR bantam, bantam Leghorn, bantam black/blue Cochins (these can be frizzles), there could be others…..chicks will be available (at a reduced rate) from mid Jan till March in groups of 5 (limit of 10) with a called reservation, these chicks will be unsexed, every breed will not be available at every hatch, hatches can fail, chicks will need to be picked up within 48 hours, most hatches are on a Friday weekly. The one requirement for these chicks is they are to be used to show at the upcoming Fair and not sold.
