Ice cream & milkshakes served on site
Plants growing on trellis, creating a shady space
Example of ice cream vendor operating on New York City streets
Example of a paint application similar to the proposed
Garden example showing dot pattern from above
Park example showing dot pattern in perennials with crushed gravel walkways
The site’s history as the Palm Dairy
operations and the place once
considered to have ‘the best milkshakes
in the city” serve as an inspiration for
the building design and the park parti.
A bubble dot patterning is applied on
this site concept – circular planters,
mounded lawn, pavement striping, and
seating edges – to reference a past
use and suggest some whimsy in the
space. The interstitial spaces become
the places for activity and gathering
while a bright trellis provide shade and
enclosure.

concept hillscape
As a small park on a busy street,
mounding and berming of the ground
can provide spatial separation from
noisy traffic on Main Street. Berms
and mounds provide soft landscape
treatment as well as more intimate
places for informal use and social
exchange. In this hillscape scheme,
terrain shaping provides opportunities
for seating and play, dramatizes
shadows and light, and aids in
stormwater management and drainage.
Higher mounds at street edge shelters space from traffic and noise
Wavy mounding provides choice to sit in sun or shade
Roadside infiltration area cleans polluted water
Mounds at edge define the park boundaries
Example park with wavy groundplane
Walls also serve as secondary seating
Gentle mounds in the center creates inhabitable spaces
Hammocks make fun and comfortable places to stop and take a break

base
A French word meaning shade
or shadow, ombré is a technique
that merges contrasting colours
or tones together in one fabric
resulting in an ethereal patterning.
The park site plays an important
role in blending two communities
together – Riley Park and Mount
Pleasant – thereby allowing the
park to belong to both. In this
concept plan, the technique of
ombré is suggested through the
use of flowering hydrangeas
that flower in different colours
depending on the acidity of the soil:
blue for acid and pink for alkaline.
Raised planters with built-in seating at south end
Sunken planters allow for infiltration and cleaning of water at the north end
Hydrangea shrubs contrasted with clipped, structure-providing plants
Lawn adjacent to beds of blooms in the middle of the park
Plaza space at south end of park with tables and chairs

Straw-like trellis creates green promenade space
Illustration of Silva Cell tree system protecting tree roots and providing place for water inflitration
In this small park on a busy street, berms and
gentle slopes create a soft landscape, provide
spatial separation from noisy traffic on Main Street
and become spaces for informal use and social
exchange. Within these edges are a variety of
seating options from seat walls and benches, to café
tables, chairs and swivel stools.
The site’s history, as the Palm Dairy operations
and the place once considered to have ‘the best
milkshakes in the city,” serve as inspiration for
the building design and park parti. A bubble dot
patterning is applied on the groundplane referencing
the past use. The interstitial spaces become places
for activity and gathering while a bright, straw-like
trellis provides shade and enclosure.
