WINNING RETURN FORMENDELSSOHN
Dundalk=s Listed Patton S., part of the AEuropean Road to the
Kentucky Derby@ on Friday evening, attracted three substantial
colts from Ballydoyle headed by Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy),
who has already proven worth his $3-million Keeneland
September purchase price after a stellar end to his juvenile
campaign. Green initially when winning a Curragh maiden in
August and when last of seven in the G2 Champagne S. at
Doncaster the following month, the penny dropped in first-time
blinkers next time as he belied odds of 50-1 when runner-up to
U S Navy Flag (War Front) as the stable registered a one-two-
three-four in the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket in October.
Looking ever more professional when lighting up Breeders= Cup
Friday when winning the GI Juvenile Turf at Del Mar the next
month, the half-brother to the 11-time Grade I winner and
multiple champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) and the
GI Hollywood Futurity-winning sire Into Mischief (Harlan=s
Holiday) is on his way to adding further lustre to his dam, Leslie=s
Lady=s, already astonishing record.
Again in blinkers on Friday, the bay traveled ominously easily
for Ryan Moore tracking his positively-ridden stable companion
Threeandfourpence (War Front) in second.

PHOENIX, RADCLIFFE PART WAYS Kerri Radcliffe, who led Phoenix Thoroughbreds through its
first year in Europe and America last year, is no longer the
organization's bloodstock and racing manager. The news was
first reported by Paulick Report and confirmed to TDN on Friday
by Phoenix founder and chief executive officer Amer Abdulaziz.
Abdulaziz declined to comment on a reason for the split.
Radcliffe said she did not wish to comment extensively at this
time, but said, "I wish them all the best for the future. I look
forward to watching the horses that I bought run and have
continued success."
Phoenix, a Dubai-based investment fund, began buying horses
through Radcliffe at last year's breeze-up, yearling and breeding
stock sales in America and Europe. It has enjoyed early success
with horses like unbeaten Grade I winner Dream Tree (Uncle
Mo), the multiple graded-placed Mourinho (Super Saver), and
dual winners Walk in the Sun (Street Sense) and Gronkowski
(Lonhro {Aus}).

THE PLAN WAS TO COME HERE, THEN
GO TO DUBAI THEN HOPEFULLY
THE KENTUCKY DERBY.Aidan O’Brien
Winning Return For Mendelssohn cont. from p1
Tackling that well-supported barnmate from the top of the
straight, the imposing Mendelssohn began to win the argument
from just before the furlong pole and hit the line strong as they
drew clear of the third member of the Rosegreen trio, Seahenge
(Scat Daddy).
AYou=d be delighted with that. It was nice to get him started
and he did everything right, he traveled and quickened well,@
Aidan O=Brien said. AHe was a little bit rusty, obviously, on his
first run in a long time, but Ryan was very happy with him.
Physically, he=s done very well and mentally he is good, he=s very
relaxed which is good. The plan was to come here, then go to
Dubai [the G2 UAE Derby on Mar. 31] and then hopefully the
Kentucky Derby. We always felt that we would need a couple of
runs in this part of the world before we go. If everything is well
hopefully we=ll go on to Dubai with him. Hopefully then we can
look at Kentucky, but obviously we have to run a big race in
Dubai and go on from there, but that=s what we=d be hoping to
do. There is plenty of dirt in his pedigree and as we saw he=s a
good traveler and very good physically.@
Mendelssohn is now tied on points for the lead in the
European Road to the Kentucky Derby series with 20, level with
Phoenix Thoroughbreds= Gronkowski (Lonhro {Aus}), who also
has Churchill Downs aspirations after winning a Kempton
conditions race on Wednesday. The overall winner of the points
series gets an automatic run in the Kentucky Derby, as does the
winner of the UAE Derby.
Of the second and third, the Ballydoyle trainer added,
ASeamus=s horse [Threeandfourpence] was a little babyish in
front, as he=s not used to being there, and Donnacha=s horse
[Seahenge] was a little bit slow away but they are all things we
can work on. The plan with the three colts that ran tonight is to
go to Dubai and then hopefully we go on from there.@

ended up second in a mile conditions race at Jagersro in
November before being switched to Nicolas Clement, who
pitched him in deep here to see how he measured up. Always
prominent on the outer in second as Boomboom Kiss led, the
bay showed tenacity to gain the advantage passing the furlong
pole and stay on for a first black-type success. AThis was a little
bit of a surprise, as this horse came to me from Sweden at the
end of January and I had not done a lot with him,@ his trainer
said. AI didn=t really know what to expect, as he doesn=t show
much in the mornings, but he obviously has some ability. He is a

entirety of his 4-year-old season. Well beaten and last first-up,
he bounced back to be beaten 2 1/4 lengths in fourth in the
G3 Dubai Millennium S. over this trip on Feb. 22.
Bin Suroor said of Thunder Snow, AWe know conditions suit
him on the Meydan dirt track and he has been in great form
since winning the second round of the Al Maktoum Challenge.
This looks a lot tougher challenge, but we are very hopeful of
another big run. Team Talk has been working well and we were
keen to try him on dirt.@
Charlie Appleby sends out the well-bred Boynton (More Than
Ready), a $750,000 yearling who looked a Classic hope two years
ago before being sidelined due to injury. Gelded after going
winless in three tries in Britain late last year, Boynton resurfaced
with an eye-catching first-up win at Meydan on Feb. 1 over
carnival winner Kimbear (Temple City).
Furia Cruzada (Chi) (Newfoundland) could do no better than
fourth behind Thunder Snow in the Al Maktoum Challenge
Round 2, but she bounced back to be a short-head second to
Godolphin=s good mare Promising Run (Hard Spun) in the
G2 Balanchine S. on Feb. 17.
SOUTH AFRICANS A FACTOR IN JEBEL HATTA Janoobi (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), hailing from the Mike de Kock
barn, steps up for Sheikh Hamdan=s Shadwell in the 1800-metre
G1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan on Saturday. Leaving from stall eight
in the 11-horse field, the MGSW in South Africa reported home
second in the G2 Al Fahidi Fort trying group company in Meydan
on Feb. 1. The entire found the 1600 metres of the Feb. 22
G2 Zabeel Mile to his liking, with South African champion
Whisky Baron (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}) fourth, on Feb. 22.
Janoobi is joined by fellow Shadwell colourbearer and Listed HH
The President=s Cup winner Eqtiraan (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}), who is
under the care of Ali Al Rayhi.
Predictably, Godolphin is well represented with five runners in
this trial for the 1800-metre G1 Dubai Turf, and Saeed bin
Suroor=s G3 Hampton Court S. hero Benbatl (GB) is looking for
his third consecutive win here. Off the mark in his 4-year-old
bow, the G3 Singspiel S. over course and distance on Jan. 11, the
son of Dubawi (Ire) rolled to a 3 3/4 win in the G2 Al Rashidiya in
identical conditions on Feb. 1.
Second by a half-length in this event in 2017, last out Feb. 22
G3 Dubai Millennium S. winner and G1 Cox Plate third
Folkswood (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) will also return in this
spot for Charlie Appleby. Leshlaa (Street Cry {Ire}), on top in a
Meydan handicap on Feb. 8, was only a nose back of Folkswood
in the Dubai Millennium for bin Suroor, who also has the mare
Promising Run (Hard Spun), a dual Group 2 winner this Carnival,
including the G2 Balanchine on Feb. 17.
ABenbatl has thrived here in Dubai this year and already won
twice,@ bin Suroor said. AThis is tougher, but he merits the step
up in class. Promising Run always tries her best and has also won
twice this Carnival, albeit in fillies and mares races. It will be
interesting to see how she gets on against the colts. Leshlaa is a
horse we have always really liked, so he merits his place in a
tough race, but we expect him to run well.@
HAWKBILL LOOKING FOR HIS EL DORADO The final race on Meydan=s Super Saturday card, the
2410-metre $250,000 G2 Dubai City Of Gold features a full field
of 14. Six of them hail from Godolphin, with G1 Coral-Eclipse S.
hero Hawkbill (Kitten=s Joy) bearing the honour of the blue cap.
Rated 118, the 2016 English highweight saluted in the G3 Aston
Park S. at Newbury last May before a third in the G1 Investec

runner-up performances, in the G1 Longines Grosser Preis von

MGSW Best Solution (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) is making his third
start at the Carnival on Saturday, and he most recently drew off
to win by five lengths in a Meydan handicap on Feb. 15.
Frontiersman (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), will grace the Carnival for the
first time. The Listed Godolphin S. hero and Coronation Cup
second warmed up with a third in a conditions event over the
Wolverhampton synthetic on Jan. 15.
Called To The Bar (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) reappears after
being shelved for just over nine months and is an intriguing
prospect here. The G3 Prix du Lys hero was second in the
GI Belmont Derby Invitational S. back on July 8. Sheikh Hamdan
bin Mohammed Al Maktoum=s GSW Earnshaw (Medaglia d=Oro)
could also disrupt the Godolphin procession, and the 7-year-old
gelding completed the trifecta over 2000 metres in the G3 Dubai
Millennium S. locally on Feb. 22.
RIVALRY RENEWED IN SHIMAAL Comicas (Distorted Humor) and My Catch (Ire) (Camacho {GB})
have been tussling over the 1200 metres of the Meydan dirt all
season, and the pair clash once again in Thursday=s G3 Mahab Al
Shimaal, the local prep for the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen over
the same course and distance. They were second and third,
respectively, in the Listed Garhoud Sprint on Dec. 17 before
Comicas notched a win, with My Catch back in fourth, in the
G3 Dubawi S. on Jan. 18. My Catch turned the tables, however,
three weeks later in the G3 Al Shindagha Sprint with Comicas in
second. While My Catch tends to sit on or near the pace Comicas
takes some early work to keep up with the frontrunners before
closing late, and his ability to keep in touch with the leaders is
likely to be vital.
My Catch=s running style will likely not be advantaged by gate
10, while Comicas has fared better in gate three.
While the beloved Reynalothewizard (Speightstown) will not
participate here, his trainer Satish Seemar saddles Raven=s
Corner (Raven=s Pass), a winner over a furlong further on
Feb. 22. Embattled trainer Salem bin Ghadayer saddles Yalta
(Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who won a handicap over this
course and distance by five lengths on Feb. 17.
METAL LOOKS TOUGH IN BURJ NAHAAR Heavy Metal (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) has been a master
of the Meydan dirt mile over the past two seasons, and Sheikh
Hamdan bin Mohammed=s 8-year-old gelding looks for back-to-
back wins in Saturday=s G3 Burj Nahaar over that course and
distance. The bay won this by 6 1/2 lengths a year ago before
fading to eighth over the rare muddy going in the G2 Godolphin
Mile three weeks later, but he bounced back with a pair of wins
to start the season, including a 4 1/2-length tally over Thunder
Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1.
Upped to 1900 metres for the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2,
Heavy Metal faded to be third behind Thunder Snow, but he
goes into this off a 9 3/4-length romp back at his pet distance in
the G3 Firebreak S. on Feb. 17. Cont. p8

Heavy Metal looks to have these well held on the ratings, but
nonetheless Kimbear (Temple City) started the year off with a
five-length win in a course and distance handicap. He was well
beaten when second to Raven=s Corner (Raven=s Pass) dropped
down to 1400 metres last out on Feb. 22, but Raven=s Corner
instead opts to drop down in trip for Saturday=s G3 Mahab Al
Shimaal.
Hong Kong=s Classic Emperor (Medaglia d=Oro) makes a last-
ditch effort to get into the Godolphin Mile after stumbling badly
at the start of a track and trip handicap on Feb. 22 and unseating
his rider. Classic Emperor has won over 1650 metres on the Sha

Mar. 1. He will thus have some questions to answer on his
return to the dirt. Gotti (More Than Ready) and Last Voyage
(Eskendereya) were second and third, respectively, behind Gold
Town in the UAE 2000 Guineas.

Godolphin came dangerously close to defeating the local G1 Al
Quoz Sprint favourite Ertijaal (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) with Blue
Point (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G2 Meydan Sprint two weeks ago,
and the boys in blue will on Saturday throw six at Ertijaal in the
Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint, a conditions race over the same course
and distance as the Al Quoz Sprint in three weeks= time. While
Ertijaal did win last out, his second score over 1000 metres on
the turf this season, the wide consensus was that the placings
with Blue Point would have been reversed with the added
furlong of the Al Quoz trip, and therefore Blue Point has been
made international favourite for that contest. Ertijaal was
indeed caught out in last year=s Al Quoz, finishing third after
going similarly unbeaten in two prior outings.

Top billing among the Godolphin contingent likely goes to
Charlie Appleby=s Jungle Cat (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), winner of the
G2 Al Fahidi Fort first-up over a furlong more than this on Feb. 1.
The 6-year-old has won over this course and distance at the
carnival the past two seasons. Stablemate Baccarat (Ire) (Dutch
Art {GB}) has also proven something of a track and trip specialist;
he has a win and a second at the handicap level from two
outings this season.

>BOLT= TAKES ON MCKINZIE IN SAN FELIPE
By Christie DeBernardis
Dual Grade I winner Bolt d=Oro (Medaglia d=Oro) will face off
with undefeated ATDN Rising Star@ McKinzie (Street Sense)
Saturday when he makes his highly anticipated sophomore
debut in the GII San Felipe S. at Santa Anita. Following his debut
win at Del Mar in August with a victory in the GI Del Mar
Futurity S. Sept. 4, the $630,000 FTSAUG buy passed his two-
turn test with flying colors next out, romping by 7 3/4 lengths in
the GI FrontRunner S. Sept. 30. Favored to keep his perfect
record intact in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile back in San Diego
Nov. 4, the bay overcame a slow start and wide journey to be
third behind Good Magic (Curlin), who beat Bolt d=Oro again at
the Eclipse Awards, but finished a lackluster third when making
his seasonal bow in last weekend=s GII Fountain of Youth S.
Bolt d=Oro was originally scheduled to start his season in the
Feb. 10 GII San Vicente S., but bypassed that race due to some
soreness. Hall of Famer Javier Castellano takes over the reins on
the Ruis Racing runner, who enters off a best-of-93 half-mile in
Arcadia Mar. 5.
"I want a good race out of him, but not a super race, because
our goal here is the [GI] Santa Anita Derby and from there, if all
goes well, the [GI] Kentucky Derby,@ owner/trainer Mick Ruis
told the Santa Anita notes team. AThat said, I think he has
enough talent to win [the San Felipe].@

PAIR OF PROMISING PINHOOKS FOR ASHBROOK by Brian DiDonato
When Glenn ABo@ Bromagen graduated with a business degree
from Trinity University in 2007, he wasn=t quite certain yet what
he wanted to do with the rest of his life. That would soon
change.
His father Glenn Sr. had been involved in racing since the
1960s, and founded Ashbrook Farm in Lexington in 1983. Bo
grew up in the sport along with the rest of his family, but as he
and his two siblings got older and went on to high school and
college, his father got out of the business. Ashbrook came back
with a vengeance, however, around the same time when Bo was
finishing up school.
AThe first horse my father bought after getting back in the
game was Wicked Style (Macho Uno), who David Ingordo
bought for him [for $75,000 at OBS April] and who won the
[2007] Breeders= Futurity,@ said the now 34-year-old Bo
Bromagen. Cont. p8

>Bolt= Takes on McKinzie in San Felipe cont. from p1
An ultra-impressive first-out winner here Oct. 28, McKinzie
crossed the wire second in the Dec. 9 GI Los Alamitos Futurity,
but was promoted to first after the disqualification of his
stablemate Solomini (Curlin). The bay was last seen winning the
one-mile GIII Sham S. Jan. 6.
Kanthaka (Jimmy Creed) came running late to score an 11-1
upset in the San Vicente and makes his first try beyond seven
furlongs here. GIII Robert B. Lewis S. top two Lombo (Graydar)
and Ayacara (GB) (Violence) also return in this spot and the
former looks like the speed of this race. He may be joined on the
front end by recent maiden winner Aquila (Union Rags), who
earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure for his front-running
2 1/4-length graduation over this track-and-trip Feb. 16.
WORLD APPROVAL LOOKS TO KEEP
ROLLING IN KILROE MILE
Eclipse Award winner World Approval (Northern Afleet) rides
a four-race win streak into the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile Saturday
at Santa Anita, where he looks to score his fifth top-level victory.
The 6-year-old ran the table during the second half of his 2017
campaign, capturing the GI Fourstardave H. at Saratoga Aug. 12
and the GI Woodbine Mile Sept. 16 before capping off a
championship year with a win in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile
Nov. 4 at Del Mar. He had to work to get to the winner=s circle in
his 1 1/16th-mile seasonal bow, holding off Forge (Harlan=s
Holiday) in the final strides of the GIII Tampa Bay S. Feb.10.
The only other Grade I winner in the field is California-bred
What a View (Vronsky), who scored in the 2016 edition of this
event. He led throughout last year=s renewal, but was caught in
the final strides by MGISW Bal a Bali (Brz) (Put It Back). Cont. p4

(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) both look to add another Grade I to their
resumes in Saturday=s GI Santa Anita H. and provide Hall of
Famer Bob Baffert with his sixth win in this event.
Aside from his sixth-place finish in last year=s G1 Dubai World
Cup, Hoppertunity has finished no worse than fourth since his
maiden voyage here in January 2014. His Grade I wins include
the 2015 Clark H. at Churchill Downs and the 2016 Jockey Club
Gold Cup at Belmont Park. The bay is making his first start of
2018 after finishing last season with a third-place effort in the
Clark Nov. 24 and a fourth last time out in the GII San Antonio S.
Dec. 26.
World traveler Mubtaahij got his first Grade I success in the
Awesome Again S. here Sept. 30 before running eighth in the
GI Breeders= Cup Classic at Del Mar Nov. 4. He finished third in
the GIII Native Diver S. Nov. 25 at Del Mar and completed the
trifecta behind the reopposing Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) and

Pasqual S. Feb. 3.
Fear the Cowboy (Cowboy Cal) and Giant Expectations (Frost

the GIII Harlan=s Holiday S. Dec. 16 and made a big run to grab

in Hallandale.

>FLAME= HOPES TO STAY HOT IN TAMPA
BAY DERBY By Christie DeBernardis
John Oxley=s Flameaway (Scat Daddy) sprung the upset lasttime at Tampa Bay with a 10-1 score in the Feb. 10 GIII Sam F.Davis S., but will have more of a target on his back this timearound in Saturday=s GII Tampa Bay Derby. Capturing an off-the-turf renewal of the Skidmore S. and the turfy GIII Bourbon S. lastseason, the Mark Casse pupil kicked off this term with a win inthe grassy Kitten=s Joy S. at Gulfstream Jan. 6. The chestnut wasworking so well on dirt his connections decided to give himanother try on the main track in the Sam Davis and wererewarded with a half-length score. Vino Rosso (Curlin) looked like one to bet back next time whenclosing hard to be third in the Sam Davis. The $410,000 KEESEPbuy, who followed his debut win at Aqueduct Nov. 11 with aN1X victory here Dec. 22, adds blinkers for this test. Dale Romans upset last weekend=s GII Fountain of Youth S.with Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford) and looks to pull offanother surprise here with Tiz Mischief (Into Mischief). A headsecond to GIII Gotham S.-bound Enticed (Medaglia d=Oro) in theGII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 25, the bay was third behindAudible (Into Mischief) and GISW stablemate and Gothamcontender Free Drop Billy (Union Rags) in the GII Holy Bull S.Feb. 3. Tiz Mischief has been working well in the interim and willhope for a hot pace to run into here. Two other runners of intrigue are World of Trouble(Kantharos) and Untamed Domain (Animal Kingdom). Rompingby 14 lengths when unveiling in a $25,000 maiden claimer atGulfstream in August, World of Trouble was privately purchasedby Michael Dubb and Bethlehem Stables after that debut andchecked in second in the Florida Sire Affirmed S. next out.Transferred from Kathleen O=Connell to Jason Servis, the baywired the field by 13 3/4 lengths in the seven-panel Pasco S.here Jan. 20 and tries two turns for the first time in this test.
Untamed Domain has been quite successful on turf up to this
point and trainer Graham Motion will give him a chance to show
the same versatility as his GI Kentucky Derby-winning sire in this
first try over the main track. Winner of the GII Summer S. in
September, the ATDN Rising Star@ was second to the blue-
blooded Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) in the GI Breeders= Cup
Juvenile Turf Nov. 3 and came running a bit too late when third
last time in the GIII Dania Beach S. at Gulfstream Feb. 3.
GRADE I WINNERS HEADLINE GOTHAM
Trainer Dale Romans had good reason to scratch Free Drop
Billy (Union Rags) from last weekend=s GII Fountain of Youth S.
at Gulfstream Park--he also had the race=s 18-1 upset winner
Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford) entered. Last term=s
GI Claiborne Breeders= Futurity S. hero, second-best in the
GII Holy Bull S. Feb. 3, has been installed as the 9-5 morning-line
favorite cutting back to a one-turn mile in Saturday=s
GIII Gotham S. at the Big A. Romans and the Albaugh family
teamed up for a win in this race last year with J Boys Echo
(Mineshaft).
"I think it's a wide-open race," Romans said. "For most of the
3-year-old preps at this time of the year, they're all wide open,
everybody is starting to come together, but he's doing great, so
we'll see how it goes."
Firenze Fire (Poseidon=s Warrior), winner of last term=s
GI Champagne S., makes his third straight start in South Ozone
Park. The Jerome S. victor completed the exacta in the
nine-furlong GIII Withers S. last time Feb. 3. "He'll always give
you a run, he always tries," trainer Jason Servis said.

GRADE I WINNERS BATTLE IN HILLSBOROUGH
By Christie DeBernardis Tampa Bay=s GII Hillsborough S. always attracts a high qualityfield, with two-time champion Tepin (Bernstein), MGISWStephanie=s Kitten (Kitten=s Joy) and Grade I victress Dickinson(Medaglia d=Oro) on the list of recent winners, and this year isno exception. La Coronel (Colonel John) and Daddys Lil Darling(Scat Daddy) finished one-two in Keeneland=s GI QEII Cup inOctober and meet once again in this spot. While La Coronel, who was most recently second in this venue=s Feb. 10 GIIIEndeavour S., called it a season after that effort, Daddys LilDarling went on to finish third to Lovely Bernadette (Wilburn) inChurchill=s GII Mrs. Revere S. and got her long awaited Grade I inthe American Oaks at Santa Anita when last seen Dec. 30. Thebay has won off the layoff in the past and has been working wellat Payson Park, most recently firing a half-mile bullet in :48 flatMar. 2. Martin Schwartz=s Off Limits (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire})closed out 2017 on a hot streak and looks to continue that asshe gets her 2018 season started here. Capturing a Saratogaoptional claimer last August, the chestnut followed suit withvictories in the GIII Noble Damsel S. Sept. 23, GIII Athenia S.
Oct. 28 and the GI Matriarch S. Nov. 26. While Proctor=s Ledge (Ghostzapper) is not a Grade I winneryet, she is a two-time graded winner and a ATDN Rising Star@and certainly deserves a look here. Capturing the GIII LakeGeorge S. at Saratoga in July, the homebred followed suit with avictory in that venue=s GII Lake Placid S. a month later. The baydisappointed last time when eighth in the QEII, but looks primedto bounce back in this spot with a best-of-17 five-furlong bulletin :59 2/5 on the grass at Palm Meadows last time Mar. 3.

McKinzie | Benoit
Ed DeRosa of TwinSpires.com takes on TDN's Steve Sherack and
Brian DiDonato as they handicap each prep race leading up to
the GI Kentucky Derby. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets
--highest bankroll after the Lexington S. wins.
DeRosa: GII Fountain of Youth S. - Storm Runner made a move
before checking and fading to seventh behind his stablemate.
Bankroll: $770.
GII Tampa Bay Derby - I can=t ignore the handicapping aids I use
(Brisnet Speed, Class, Prime Power, Optix, and Predicteform) all
pointing to World of Trouble as the fastest animal at this trip.
Selection: #8 World of Trouble (5-1).
GII San Felipe S. - The most exciting weekend from a volume
standpoint has the most exciting matchup to date as well, as the
McKinzie--Bolt D=Oro showdown is the most anticipated of the
three Kentucky Derby points races. In the marquee match-up,
we=ll take McKinzie to win this round, as I prefer his current
form: he=s won two graded stakes since two-time GISW Bolt
d=Oro finished third as the favorite in the Breeders= Cup Juvenile,
and he hasn=t had any misses in his training. Both are interesting
from a Kentucky Derby standpoint, but McKinzie seems more
poised for victory here. Selection: #4 McKinzie (8-5).
GIII Gotham S. - I find this the toughest of the trio from a
handicapping perspective. Free Drop Billy and Firenze Fire will
both be overbet. I wish I had a stronger alternative at a decent
price. This is a rare case where I=ll be boxing a bunch against the
favorites in the pari-mutuel market, but for this contest I need
to make a singular pick, and I landed on Old Time Revival, as I
think he is the one most likely to stick around the expected fast
pace. Selection: #7 Old Time Revival (15-1).
Sherack: GII Fountain of Youth S. - Tweeted out Gotta Go (sixth
at 21-1) as an alternate after the late scratch of Free Drop Billy.
Any chance you guys give me a refund instead? Bankroll: $1050.
GII Tampa Bay Derby - Vino Rosso got going a little too late in a
very promising third-place finish--his first career defeat--in the
local prep for this and the addition of blinkers may be the
missing piece to the puzzle. Pletcher continues to dominate this
race winning four out of the last five renewals and everything
he=s been sending out at Tampa this meet has been super live.
Can=t wait to see this son of Curlin stretch out even further.
Selection: #3 Vino Rosso (4-1).
GII San Felipe S. - Doesn=t look like much of a betting race, but
this is definitely the showdown that everyone has been waiting
for. Was probably more visually impressed by Bolt d=Oro last
season, but considering his tendencies to break slow and missed
time earlier this winter, will give the slight edge to McKinzie for
this round. A perfect three-for-three with some help from the
stewards, have to believe that Baffert has him ready to roll first
off the bench. Selection: #4 McKinzie (8-5).
GIII Gotham S. - Made my case for Free Drop Billy in last
weekend=s Fountain of Youth and the re-routed Dale Romans
trainee looks like the one to beat cutting back to a one-turn mile
here. The early-pace scenario, headed by the presence of his
speedy stablemate Cove Blue, should help set him up very well.
Interested in longshots Dial Operator and Beautiful Shot for
underneath. Selection: #6 Free Drop Billy (9-5). Cont. p8

Bo Bromagen, third from left, alongside his father after
Weep No More=s win in the 2016 Ashland | Coady Photo
Triple Crown Throwdown cont.
DiDonato: GII Fountain of Youth S. - Chalking out didn=t work
out how I=d hoped, as Good Magic was a somewhat dull third.
The jury=s still out on him and that race as a whole, I suppose.
Bankroll: $2240.
GII Tampa Bay Derby - I hate to take the horse who I expect at
least Steve to also take, but Vino Rosso simply seems like the
right one. The lightly raced colt appeared kind of lost out there
for much of the GII Sam F. Davis, but finally figured it out when it
was too late and was gaining on Flameaway and Catholic Boy at
the wire before galloping out in front. If ever there was a
candidate for blinkers, it=s him. Selection: #3 Vino Rosso (4-1).
GII San Felipe S. - Since my chalky selection of Good Magic went
so well last week, I=ll take his rival Bolt d=Oro here. He was
obviously crazy good last year, and if he returns as good or
better he=s still the horse they have to beat despite the recency
edge his competitors have. Selection: #1 Bolt d=Oro (2-1).
GIII Gotham S. - Dial Operator went on my watch list after a
very impressive debut win in which he rallied from far back--not
something easy to do at Monmouth going five furlongs. He was
equally impressive blowing past Laurel optional claimers like
they were standing still last time. Obviously, the stretch out
from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile is tricky, but it comes around one
turn, and on pedigree he should be able to see out the trip. Dial
Operator should get plenty of pace in front of him, and it=s kind
of interesting that he=s running here given his Grade I-winning
stablemate Firenze Fire is also entered. Selection: #1 Dial
Operator (10-1).
Pair of Promising Pinhooks for Ashbrook cont. from p1
Bromagen continued, ASo I worked as a waiter that entire
summer, I came back to Kentucky and the first thing we had of
any importance was a Grade I winner at Keeneland. It really
solidified my interest and desire to want to be in this game that I
find so exciting and entertaining and enjoyable--I wanted to be
in it for the rest of my life, if I could.@
Ashbrook=s runners had always been trained by Rusty Arnold,
so Bo started off walking hots for the veteran conditioner before
eventually graduating to groom and then barn foreman. He then
interned in the Keeneland racing and sales offices before taking
his bloodstock education to the next level while working for top
agent David Ingordo.
AHe gets a ton of business, so to work for a guy like that gives
you a ton of exposure and experience and not to mention
education,@ Bromagen said. AWorking with him, I got to meet
lots of trainers and other individuals in the horse business, so it
was an education second-to-none.@
After about five years working with Ingordo, Bromagen took
over buying and managing for Ashbrook. Among his biggest
successes so far was the purchase of a Mineshaft filly scooped
up for $120,000 at the 2015 March Sale. Eventually named
Weep No More and turned over to Arnold, the chestnut
annexed Tampa=s Suncoast S. in February of 2016 before
upending a highly regarded field back in Lexington in the GI
Ashland S.
Bromagen gets involved on both sides of the 2-year-old
market, and will generally have an interest in 6-12 yearling-to-
juvenile pinhooks.
Last year a Tale of the Cat colt he picked up for $100,000 at
Keeneland September blossomed into a $275,000 OBS March

Pair of Promising Pinhooks for Ashbrook cont.
Unveiled by Colts Neck Stables and Alan Goldberg at
Gulfstream Jan. 13, Under a Spell was backed down to
favoritism into the face of Todd Pletcher-trained Magnum Moon
(Malibu Moon) and finished a good second to that foe. Magnum
Moon added a Feb. 15 optional claimer at Tampa Bay Downs to
garner the >TDN Rising Star= distinction.
AI think they=re going to have some fun with him,@ Bromagen
said of Under a Spell.
This year, Ashbrook has five juveniles to be offered at the 2-
year-old sales, including two at OBS March. All will be consigned
by Jeanne Mayberry and her family=s Mayberry Farm.
The priciest of Bromagen=s yearling buys has hip 457, a filly
from the first crop of Fed Biz who cost $175,000 at Keeneland
September. The daughter of stakes-winning Mama Nadine (A.P.
Indy) and granddaughter of champion juvenile filly Countess
Diana (Deerhound) has already had a couple of pedigree
updates since Bromagen signed for her. Now 3-year-old half-
sister Brattata (More Than Ready) finished second in Aqueduct=s
Chelsey Flower S. in November, broke her maiden convincingly
at Gulfstream Feb. 4 and was third in last weekend=s GIII
Herecomesthebride S. Six-year-old half-brother Royal Son
(Tiznow), meanwhile, romped by 7 1/4 lengths in Turfway=s
Prairie Bayou S., earning a 105 Beyer Speed Figure.
AWe=re thrilled with her,@ said Bromagen of the Fed Biz filly.
AShe=s very athletic. I have a guy I work with at the sale, [jockey
agent] Chris Pipito, who helps me with on-the-spot pedigree
analysis. He=s like Rain Man--he watches so many races and he=s
got this recall ability where he can just fire off results off the top
of his head... So we=d been looking at her, and he mentioned
Brattata and we loved the opportunities with the half-sister.@
Bromagen prefers to look at each horse individually rather
than search for horses by specific sires, but he has high
expectations for Fed Biz.
APrimarily, I=ll focus on the individual,@ he said. ASire power
isn=t something that I=m going to focus on. That=s mostly a factor
of what we can afford. If I had all the money in the world, yeah
I=d be buying Tapits, but I=ve got to look for value to a certain
extent. Whatever I pinhook in a given year I try to find a good
mix between proven stallions and first- and second-crop
stallions. I think Fed Biz represents one of those young sires who
should do well--he showed some real ability on the track
himself, and he=s at a farm [in WinStar] where I know he=s been
well supported and bred to solid mares.@
Ashbrook will also be represented at March by a Ghostzapper
colt catalogued as hip 558. The Mar. 26 foal hails from the
female family of flashy >TDN Rising Star= Strike Power
(Speightstown), who went two-for-two in the GIII Swale S. last
month and finished second on the stretch out in last Saturday=s
GII Fountain of Youth S.
AI=d been working the sale very, very hard at the point when I
finally bought him [for $95,000 at Keeneland September as hip
664],@ Bromagen recalled. AHe was up on the hill at Paramount
and they had four or five horses in that barn at the same time
who were just absolute standouts. So I think everybody kind of
focused a little more on them, and he dropped down to that
next level where he was affordable for me. I liked him the entire
time. The Ghostzappers don=t have to be these big, strapping,
handsome horses to be able to run. I thought he was just
something with a ton of potential--good bone, correct, walked
well. He=s just a solid, solid horse and he=s been doing real well.@
Bromagen believes strongly in the Mayberry Farm program,
and he=s seen their operation from just about every angle. Weep
No More was purchased from Mayberry as well. Cont. p10

Mayberry broke and trained Hall of Famer Zenyatta, one of
Ingordo=s best auction finds.
AI met them through David Ingordo--he pretty much grew up
with them. They=re not family, but they act like it,@ Bromagen
said. AWorking for David, I=ve spent a lot of time at the sales with
them. So not only have I developed a personal relationship with
Jeanne, Summer, April and their cousin Jacki Garcia, but I=ve
been able to see what they do every day on the track; how they
break and train horses, how they get them ready for the 2-year-
old sales and how they conduct themselves at the sale. They=re
as honest as they come, and I know that they focus on the
individual horse. The Mayberrys develop an individual plan for
the individual, and their focus is on developing a horse to get the
most out of them when it comes time to actually race.@

RONNIE FRANKLIN PASSES AWAY AT 58
Jockey Ronnie Franklin, who piloted Hall of Famer SpectacularBid to victories in the 1979 GI Kentucky Derby and GI PreaknessS., died Thursday at age 58 after a battle with lung cancer. The Baltimore native dropped out of high school at age 16 andshowed up at the barn of Hall of Famer Buddy Delp, who tookFranklin in and gave him a job despite his lack of horseexperience. Delp sent him to a training center in Virginia to learnto ride, which is where Franklin met Spectacular Bid. Franklin guided ABid@ to seven wins in 1978, including the GI Champagne S. and GI Laurel Futurity, a campaign that earnedthem both Eclipse Awards. Franklin, who was just 18 at the time, was named Outstanding Apprentice Jockey and Spectacular Bidtook home the trophy as the year=s top 2-year-old colt. The dynamic duo went on a hot streak in 1979, capturing theHutcheson S., GIII Fountain of Youth S., GI Florida Derby, GI Flamingo S. and GI Blue Grass S. prior to winning the first twolegs of the Triple Crown. Their win streak came to an end in theGI Belmont S., however, when Franklin gunned Spectacular Bidout of the gate and the champion faded to third in what was avery controversial ride. Delp replaced Franklin with Hall of Famer Billy Shoemakerafter the Belmont and Spectacular Bid went on to win two moreEclipse Awards and a several graded events. Franklin continuedto ride races and while he won a few more graded stakes, henever won another Grade I or rode another horse of SpectacularBid=s caliber. Franklin battled with a drug addiction after losing the mounton Spectacular Bid and in 1992 his license was revoked by theMaryland Jockey Club. He made several requests forreinstatement, which were denied, and he retired with 1,403wins from 9,242 starts and earnings of $14,055,722. Franklincontinued to gallop horses in the morning at various trainingcenters until his diagnosis, his nephew and former jockey WalterCullum told the Baltimore Sun. Franklin is survived by his mother, brother and four services. The family will hold a private service.

BARN 10 QUARANTINE LIFTED AT BELMONT Officials at the New York Racing Association, the New York
State Veterinarian, and the New York State Gaming Commission
have removed the quarantine on Barn 10 at Belmont Park,
effective immediately, following the conclusion of the 21-day
quarantine period.
Overseen by Dr. Anthony Verderosa, Director of NYRA's
Veterinary Department, and in consultation with the State
Veterinarian, Dr. David Smith, DVM, the quarantine was put in
place following a suspect case of equine herpes
myeloencephalopathy (EHM) Feb. 15.
The EHM case was later confirmed through nasal swab, blood
testing, and necropsy on a 4-year-old filly who had begun
exhibiting neurologic symptoms late that day. The filly, trained
by Tom Albertrani, was euthanized Feb. 16, after her condition
continued to deteriorate.
All 20 horses in Barn 10 were monitored daily for fever and
other signs of illness throughout the 21-day quarantine. No
other horses showed any symptoms of the disease.
Horses stabled in Barn 10 are now able to run in races, as well
as train among the general horse population during regular

Association President Joe Applebaum has been elected
President of the Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association in a
unanimous decision by the THA Board of Directors. He succeeds
longtime THA President Rick Violette, Jr., who retired from the
NYTHA Board and has been elected Director Emeritus.
AJoe became active with the THA upon his election to the
NYTHA Board three years ago, and he has impressed the THA
Board with his commitment to horsemen=s leadership,
backstretch causes and, most importantly, the need for racing to
adapt for the future,@ THA Chairman and CEO Alan Foreman
said. AJoe brings a fresh perspective, and his strong commitment
to the THA=s longstanding industry leadership and
consensus-building efforts made the decision an easy one for
the Board.@
THA also honored NYTHA Director Richard Schosberg, who was
presented with the THA Unsung Hero Award for his heroic
efforts during the humanitarian crisis at Belmont Park in
January, when two power outages during the record cold wave
threatened the 1,000 horses and 600 backstretch workers.

SONIC MULE (c, 4, Distorted Humor--Globe Trot, by A.P. Indy)
hadn=t visited the winner=s circle in eight starts since capturing
the local Mucho Macho Man S. as a juvenile. He finished third in
both the GII Swale S. and the GIII Mr. Prospector S. here during
his sophomore campaign. The bay began his 2018 campaign
with a fifth-place effort against optional claiming foes Jan. 18.
The 2-1 second-choice broke on top and quickly took command
through an opening quarter in :23.28. He rode the rail around
the far turn, but lost the advantage passing the eighth pole to
Command Post (Harlan=s Holiday). He fought back and dug down
to get his head down first. Sonic Mule, a $175,000 Keeneland
September yearling purchase, hails from the family of MGISW
Zensational (Unbridled=s Song) and MGSW Departing (War
Front). He is a half-brother to Bolt d=Oro (Medaglia d=Oro),

Some well-pedigreed maidens have come out for this GII
Tampa Bay Derby Day card, including the fifth and sixth-most
expensive horses from last year=s OBS March sale. RULER OF
THE NILE (Pioneerof the Nile) was a late scratch after dropping
his rider at Gulfstream Park Feb. 24. He was a $240,000 KEENOV
weanling who blossomed into a $1-million March grad after a
:20 4/5 breeze. The bay is out of a half-sister to MGSW and
hyped freshman sire Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile) and to the
GISP dam of GI Wood Memorial S. winner Outwork (Uncle Mo).
Ironwood (Curlin), meanwhile, was scratched out of a two-turn
heat last week in favor of this. The half-brother to MSW Wake
Up Nick (Cindago) RNA=d for $120,000 at Keeneland September,
but yielded a winning bid of $950,000 in Ocala after a good-
looking :10 1/5 move. He=ll be saddled for this by relatively
unknown conditioner Abraham Gardea. Phipps homebred My
Dream (Orb) hails from one of the best families in the stud
book, which includes Grade I winners Imagining, Girolamo,
Super Saver, Got Lucky, Bluegrass Cat, et al. TJCIS PPs

Trainer Todd Pletcher has begun to use Tampa Bay Downs as a
softer springboard for some of his promising runners in recent
years, and will unveil $475,000 KEESEP acquisition
ALBEROBELLO (Bernardini) on behalf of the China Horse Club.
The bay miss is a full to GISW A Z Warrior and half to MGSW Jojo
Warrior (Pioneerof the Nile), GSW and GISP E Z Warrior (Explot)
and MSW J Z Warrior (Harlan=s Holiday)--all were >TDN Rising
Stars=. Cheery Oats (Distorted Humor), a half to Classic winner
and successful sire Shackleford (Forestry); GISW Lady Joanne

Introspective (Elusive Quality) appears to be working steadily
for trainer Chad Stewart at Hunter Farm Training Center. The

Zayat Stables LLC=s DAWOOD (Giant=s Causeway) makes his
first start for Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who has been on a good
run with his maidens. The $675,000 Keeneland September grad
is a half to MGISW turfer Avenge (War Front) and full to
MSW/GSP Lira. His now 2-year-old War Front half-brother was a
$995,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling. Todd Pletcher pupil
Times Square (Tapit) RNA=d for $375,000 as a KEESEP yearling
before bringing $250,000 at OBS June from Calumet Farm after
a :10 4/5 spin. His dam is Grade II-winning and GISP sprinter

Third dam Magical Maiden (Lord Avie) was a MGISW. The regally

CLARIFICATION: Friday=s TDN incorrectly reported that
Fontanazza (f, 4, Biondetti) was the most expensive juvenile
from her sire=s first crop. A $125,000 OBS April graduate, she
was the joint most expensive filly from that crop. A colt out of
Tranquil Song (Unbridled=s Song) was purchased by Fox Hill Farm
for $240,000 at OBS March in 2016.
