After many years of car washes, product and advertising board sales, special events, and significant grantwriting, we have finally raised the$348,000 necessary to build a12,000 s.f. skate and bike park atthe entrance of Riverbend Park. Itbegan with the Survivor BeachBash in 2004 and ended with therecent approval of an $183,922grant from the Oregon Parks &Recreation Department. In addi-tion to the community events, ourmatch for the state grant was madepossible through generous dona-tions from individuals, businesses, and 10 foundations. They include:Meyer Memorial Trust, the CowCreek Umpqua Indian Foundation,Tony Hawk Foundation, OregonCommunity Foundation, DouglasCommunity Foundation of OCF, C.Giles Hunt Charitable Trust, JuanYoung Trust, Autzen Foundation,Coca-Cola Foundation, and MercyFoundation.
During the past two years, 185kids participated in the Ready To
Roll Incentive Program in whichthey demonstrated their responsibil-ity with excellent grades and atten-dance. Their names will appear onthe donor wall indicating their own-ership in the project.
On June 10th, Brandon andDustin Arms and Eoin and NeilBrown, along with four adults, trav-eled to Eagle Crest where theymade a presentation before the Ore-gon Parks and Recreation Commis-sion. The Commission was soimpressed with the kid’s compe-tence and involvement. Theyranked us #1 out of 49 projects, only 13 of which were funded. They, plus all the rest of the kidswho worked hard to raise funds, deserve a huge high-five for a jobwell done! It can be a combination ofqualities that delight the sensesor appeal to the mind or spirit. This, of course, can describe amultitude of people, places orevents. We invite you to Win-ston’s own Wildlife Safari – tosee for yourself that it is a vir-tual feast for the senses andrelief to the spirit.
Since it’s beginning in 1973,Wildlife Safari has seentremendous changes, but someof the most noteworthyachievements have occurredjust this past year. The parkhas improved outer appear-ances; the Village gardens arelush and manicured and a newplayground has been installed.Internal improvements haveallowed for the development of
new animal programsand events. A programthat we are extremelyproud of is our personal-ized tours and encoun-ters for autistic, disabledand critically ill childrenand adults. In this specialway, Wildlife Safari canreach out and allow thetherapeutic side of thepark to shine. Theserefinements have result-
ed in the park’s ultimategoal: a recommitment to
the community. Look for exciting hands-on
and cultural events scheduledthroughout the summer: June30-July 6 is ElephantasticWeek; various elephant-relatedcraft activities will be offeredand special “Meet & Greet”encounters will be availabledown at the Elephant Barn. The week will conclude with abirthday party for our maleAfrican elephant, George, whowill be turning 27 years old.
Join us for free cake andpunch and sing along as ourtwo other elephants play“Happy Birthday” to Georgeon the harmonica! Also com-ing up is a visit from JoeKrathwohl, known as the“Birdman of Las Vegas.” This
fabulous bird show will show-case the intelligence and natu-ral abilities of eagles, parrotsand other exotic species.Other events in July will fea-ture our Summer Wine Strollfor adults and AdventureCamps for children. In August,Benjamin Kilham, therenowned black bear expertwhose work has been show-cased on the National Geo-graphic and Discovery Chan-nels, and author of the bestseller Among the Bears, willbe making a special guestappearance and offering lec-tures at the park.
Wildlife Safari has growninto more than just a touristdestination; it represents Win-ston and Douglas County in aquality and caring fashion andhas the rare privilege of feelingcommunity owned. When anon-profit game park can givepeople an opportunity toescape and be at one withnature for a day, and when thepark can make a difference inlife on this planet by its conser-vation methods and education– that is where real beautybegins. Come visit the “Jewel”of Douglas County! Give us acall at 541-679-6761 exten-sion 203, or see our website atwww.wildlifesafari.net fordetails on all our first-rate sum-mer activities.

A live July Fourth celebrationbroadcast
KBOOM FM: The more, themerrier, thanks to radio
Fireworks set to music, concertperformances, announcementsand musical competitions will bebroadcast live to turn festivities atRiverbend Park into a mile-wideexperience.
KBOOM FM is the tongue-in-cheek name for the broadcastplanned by the Winston AreaCelebration Committee andSteve Goforth, owner of HighPerformance Audio-Visual ofRoseburg.
Goforth said Winston will joinan illustrious list of celebrationsfrom Chico, Calif., to Seattle thathave their own FM broadcast tohelp more people enjoy theentertainment this July Fourth.
The need to broadcast musicand events became obvious inWinston during the 2004 cele-bration, he said. Many peoplewatched the choreographed fire-works from a distance, but could-n't hear the music that accompa-nied the presentation. Whenorganizers asked if somethingcould be done, Goforth provideda solution.
"Everything that appears on theRiverbend Park stage will besimulcast, as if everyone wasright there, thanks to radio cars, portable radios and home stereos— anyone that can receive 95.5FM within the range of River-bend stage — can listen in”
The mechanics are simple. AnFM transmitter with a remoteantenna will be set up at thepark. It will be a small radio sta-tion consisting of a mixing con-sole, signal control and broad-casting equipment. The range, atabout one mile, is within stan-dards set by regulations, Goforthsaid.
"Obviously, the signal may go alittle farther depending on wherepeople are located," he said. "Wecan run the station because it is atemporary transmission at a verylow wattage."
High points in the celebration's
FM program will include live per-formances by Locust Street Taxi,a band that puts musical talentand humor together in a hilariouspackage. Local talent, includingAshley Roy and a local schoolchoir will perform "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Listening in on the FM broad-est should be like standing at thecenter of the action, organizerson KBOOM FM as everythingwinds up late Monday evening.
Kyle Rawson, 49, of Winston ismember of the Winston AreaCelebration Committee. He hasused his personal experience asan advertiser and home studiobuff to create the musical scorefor the fireworks display. Theshells will be launched in timewith the music to be broadcaston KBOOM FM.
Crowd pleasing favorites, likeToby Keith's hard-hitting "Cour-tesy of the Red, White and Blue"and "God Bless the USA," by LeeGreenwood, will play during thefireworks display along with tradi-tional, lively songs suited to thetheme of the celebration.
Rawson added that the fire-works begin with a tribute toOregon service men and womanabroad.
"I think this is wonderful. Thewhole fireworks show is 25 and ahalf minutes long," Rawson said."It's going to keep the sky lit upthe whole time with great musicin the background."

We are committed to our people, our communities, our customers, and the environment.
This year the Douglas HighSchool CEP class returned over4,100 bottles and cans earningover $1,000 to help fund thisyear’s Winston Community Cele-bration fireworks show. The stu-dents chose this community serv-
ice project a few years ago andhave faithfully contributed to ourCommunity Celebration. Week-ly, this special needs high schoolclass gathers cans and bottles atthe Winston Dillard Fire Districtstation, and returns them at localmarkets to raise money to help
offset the cost of the fireworks. It began as a field trip and grew
into a group of life skills lessonsthat reinforce classroom activi-ties. By returning cans and bot-tles, students learn real-worldapplication of their reading, math, and finance lessons. Stu-dents learn which cans and bot-tles may be returned to a particu-lar store, for example, housebrands of soda may only bereturned to the store that sellsthat brand. Students reinforcemath skills such as counting andmultiplication. They also learncash handling and correctchange counting. While theseskills may seem commonplace, itis not common to find a cashierwho correctly counts changefrom a $20 bill. These studentsall handle cash correctly, and areproud of their skills.
Beyond teaching these studentslife skills, this project gave many
students an opportunity to over-come their shyness. Each week, students interact with employeesat Winston Dillard Fire District, store employees, and membersof the public. This interactionprovides positive experiences forboth the students and theemployees and public they meet, and has resulted in life-long rela-tionships.
Thank you Douglas HighSchool CEP class, not only forhelping raise funds, but for help-ing all of us learn valuable lessonabout life and friendship. Win-ston looks forward to your con-tinued contributions to our com-munity.

Douglas High CEP Class Raises Money for this Year’sFireworks Show!
Hey, guess who's forty thisyear? The Winston-Dillard MelonFestival, that's who!!! This oldestWinston community activity willcelebrate forty years of familyfun. Dates this year are Septem-ber 5, 6, & 7 in Riverbend Parkin Winston.
The Winston-Dillard Area Festi-val Association, Inc. has beenorganizing the Melon Festivalsince the early days, when theLions Club gave up the sponsor-ship. The festival was first held inthe parking lot at what is nowPrice Less Foods. After a fewyears it outgrew the space andthe Festival Association was look-ing for a more permanent home- which it found in the undevel-oped Riverbend Park.
Those early years involved a lotof "sweat equity" as membersworked to clean up the parkarea. Profits from Festival Associ-ation activities have always goneinto Riverbend Park develop-ment. With help from communitymembers and many donations, the Festival Association built thepavilion in 1980, assisted the W-D Seniors and Douglas Recre-ation with building the restrooms, constructed the outdoor theaterin 1995 using thousands of vol-
unteer hours, and later added thekitchen onto the pavilion. In2001 with over $30,000 ofgrant and Festival funds the light-ing was extended in the park.
Festival members were involvedwith the sign and entrance to thepark. Development continues.
In addition to the Melon Festi-val, the Festival Association alsoorganizes the Winston SummerNite Cruise and the ChristmasTree Lighting Celebration andprovides concession support fora wide variety of events, includ-ing Trader Day, Fourth of JulyCommunity Celebration and theCeltic Highland Games.
This year's Melon Festival willinclude the Grand Parade; manykids games and contests includ-ing Melon Eating, Melon SeedSpitting; Talent Show, on stageentertainment; Little Miss Jobie, game, food and craft booths; aCorvette car show & shine in theFour Square Church parking lot,an old tractor show at DillardFarm Market and of course, thedelicious chicken and beef barbe-cues! The schedule is still beingplanned so if you have an activityor booth to add to the enjoymentof YOUR festival, please call theFestival President Karen Tingleat 679-5234 or the Winston Vis-itor Information Center at 679-0118 so the right committee per-son can get in touch with you.

So, what do you dowhen some misguidedteens vandalize anddestroy the public rest-rooms right before the2007 Winston 4th ofJuly Celebration? Thiswas the question beingposed to the CelebrationCommittee. Rent porta-potties of course. Porta-potties are not in thebudget though. Why notget corporate sponsors?Great idea, but what dothey get for their hardearned advertising dol-lars? How about somefriendly competition anda chance at eternalglory? And with that, theannual porta-potty deco-
rating contest wasborn!
That firstyear, the littleblue rooms weretransformed fromodiferous obscuri-
ty into grand thrones fitfor all the Kings andQueens attending a ball.We had potties decorat-ed with flowers, books, antiques, hardware, trees, pizzas, burgers, and the list goes on.
Sowhenthe dustsettled, how didthecompe-tition unfold? I am proudto say that Goin’Postal’s tropical oasiswas an overwhelmingcrowd favorite. And yes,I was given permission
to “Toot” my own hornthis one time withoutsaying “excuse me.” TheGoin’ Postal Potty sport-ed a lush bamboo forestwith a comfy hammock,a Hula-Dancin’ Hound, and a “No WorriesGoin’ with Goin’ Postal”slogan. In case you don’tknow, the hound on thedoor is Crystal, the offi-cial mascot for the bestpackaging, mailing, shipping, copying, eBay
listing, andcommunityservicesstorearound.We can befound
sandwiched betweenSubway and Fox’s Pizzain the Green District.
Now, coming upon its second year, theporta-potty decorating
frenzy has begun again. All across the land thereare secret strategy meet-ings taking place withone goal in mind, being#1 or at least #2 (Biolo-gy rules in this game so#3 is not an option). Thanks to the City ofWinston, and theirrepairs to the regularfacilities, we only need10 additional potties thisyear, which means thedecorating is limited tothe best of the best. Soeat, drink, be merry, enjoy some great enter-tainment, and witnessthe best fireworks showin Oregon at this year’sWinston Celebration. And when you “gottago,” go in your favoritepotty and cast your vote.

And we’ve been celebrating it since 1776 when America fi rst declared her independence. For two hundred thirty-two years, the Fourth of July has been a national holiday marked by a proud show
of patriotism. It’s a great tradition and we’re all part of it.
Remembering our fl ag, “Old Glory.” Remembering our Veterans. Remembering all who have died defending what our fl ag
represents. Independence.
Democracy. Th e right to vote. Th e right to worship as you choose. Freedom of speech. Th e connection between generations.
Hard won struggles…ongoing eff orts. Struggles that need each generation’s support.
Th e Fourth of July, Independence Day is a celebration of history… this proud history.
Take the day to remember. Go to the parade. See the fi reworks. Attend the family picnic. Hold a barbeque. Remember the
red, white, and blue…the Stars and Stripes.
Happy Fourth of July!
Independence Day… we call it theIndependence Day… we call it theFourth of July… the only American holiday Fourth of July… the only American holiday
that celebrates the United States.that celebrates the United States.
