As we head into winter and our last issue of 2008, I would
like to extend my warmest wishes to you, our readers,
and to all of our contributors, our SCT team, and of course,
our advertisers who have helped to make Scrapbook & Cards Today
possible this year. Without them, the magazine you hold in your
hands (or read on your screen) could not happen. And, because
of these many individuals, Scrapbook & Cards Today is now being
read in over 100 countries—thank you!
We have had another year of sharing our passion for scrapbook-
ing and card making with you, and I now offer you a challenge. Share
your passion with a friend. There is no better gift this holiday season
than passing on some of your creative expertise; thus enabling a
friend to tell their story and preserve their memories. And, as we
face some challenges in the world today, it is a perfect time to
embrace this wonderful outlet for your creativity.
Of course, every time I offer a challenge, I offer a great incen-
tive! Take a peek below at our latest giveaway. I can’t wait to read
your stories.
From all of the SCT team, have a fabulous holiday season and a
warm, healthy winter. You’ll be in stitches
when you read some of
the entries we had to our
Janome sewing machine
contest. Check out the
winning entry (and
a few others) on

We loved Michelle’s light and airy page that allows the beautiful photo to shine. Repetition of the white elements (snowfl ake, journaling strips, and scalloped border) contrib-utes to the “snowy” theme of the page.
Rozanne played up the “pretty in pink” theme with her use of a monochromatic colour palette. Small details, like the way she mimicked the heart button on the little girl’s hat with a heart embellishment, add interest and just a touch of whimsy.

’TIS THE SEASON. I found
myself humming this tune
the other day and, the
more I thought about it,
the more I realized the
signifi cance of these three
little words. While being
jolly is all very well and
fi ne (and, to tell you the
truth, perhaps something
I I should remind myself of
while trying to get the kids
ready for school each morning), I think there is so much
more to the words of this well-known carol. Here are some
of my thoughts:
‘Tis the season for giving. And what better way to show •
your friends and family you care than with a handmade
gift? Our designers certainly agree and have shared
some of their favourites in “Home for the Holidays”
(pages 51–54).
‘Tis the season for creating memories and for establishing •
traditions. Our reader’s gallery (pages 63–70) is full of
inspiring layouts that showcase a wide range of holiday
moments (even one that involves the bestowing of
“The Christmas Pineapple!).
‘Tis the season for trying to simplify (and I sincerely wish •
you luck with this one!). Busy schedules and holiday
preparations can easily lead to a decline in our creative
output. Why not try to make things simpler? We have
10 great ways for you to make your scrapbooking easier,
faster, and more productive in “KISS: Keeping it So
Simple” on pages 55–58.
‘Tis the season for sharing feelings of warmth, love, and •
well-wishes. Be sure to check out our beautiful selection
of winter cards in “Warm Winter Wishes” on pages 46–49.
Complete with easy-to-follow instructions, these cards
will have you creating in no time!
And, I could go on…but that would further delay your
turning the page to see what our winter issue has in store.
Full of inspiring ideas, beautiful projects, and just the right
amount of seasonal sparkle, I invite you to sit down with
your hot beverage of choice (tall, non-fat, no whip, vanilla
latte anyone?) and ENJOY.

I just wanted to tell you that I was
so inspired by Kimber McGray’s
“A Refl ection of You” article in your fall
issue. I NEVER include myself in photos,
and I hardly ever journal from my point
of view. Well, this article changed all
that—I have completed 3 layouts in the past
month—all on the subject of ME! I loved
Kimber’s artwork (especially her mini album)
and I have found myself taking “random”
pictures of my daily events so that I can
document a “day in my life” sometime soon.

our 4-designer challenge
Always up for a challenge, our design team welcomed this latest opportunity to put their
creativity to the test. How did each team member work with these products to make them
their own? Everyone was excited to see just how different four layouts using the same seven
products could be.
Check out what Holly, Tina, Kimber, and Michelle created when given the same seven new products to work with.
kimber mcgray I fell in love with the pom pom
trim from Bazzill, but was unsure
how to use it on my layout. Then,
I came up with the idea to cut the
trim and use it to create “snow-
balls” to dot the “i’s” in my title.
I used the snowfl ake paper, the
epoxy shapes, and the snowfl ake
charms to frame my focal photo.

michelle engel I loved the sparkly die-cut snowfl ake, but decided to cut it in half
to enable the addition of lots of elements on my page. I loved how
it played up the “snow” theme of the page (as did the snowfl ake
charms). I found that the circle epoxy shapes from My Little Yellow
Bicycle made a great “o.”

tina werner I chose to cut the die-cut snowfl ake
in half and place it so that part of the
snowfl ake perfectly framed my daugh-
ter’s face. I wanted the photo to take
center stage so I clustered my title,
journaling, and the rest of the embel-
lishments around it (this also left
plenty of restful white space). SCT

holly pittroff I wanted to call attention to the black
in my photos, so I decided to paint
both the chipboard “1” and the pom
pom trim with black acrylic paint.
I also used black ink for stamping and
outlined my journaling strips with
black pen. To draw attention to the
title, I made the epoxy ornament (that
doubles as the number zero) appear to
“hang” by stringing it with wire.

white outA coat of white paint not only freshens up a home, but also freshens up your scrap-
book supplies. White-on-white layering (using different white textures) gives a subtle
dimension to a layout and is a great backdrop for any photo. White can be very
fl attering. If your white feels too plain, add some shimmer using glitter or bling.

2009 Scrap Resolutions
1 I will lose (or use!) 20 lbs of my
scrap stash.
2 I will quit chronologically scrap-
ping cold turkey. (Just say “no”
to more baby layouts.)
3 I will not be embarrassed that I
am a design team wannabe.
4 I will open and use my layout/
minibook/card kits and not just
lay them out (in their original
packaging) and admire their
loveliness.
5 I will journal on ALL my layouts
in one sitting even if it is just to
say, “I can’t remember when
this is or where we were, but this
picture makes me (insert ap-
propriate feeling here).”
6 I will sort through 10 000 photos
on my computer and—gasp—
print and/or delete some.
7 I will not obsess over a layout
for more than a week. Ok, two
weeks.
8 I will stop feeling layout-envy,
tool-envy, stash-envy and
creative-envy.
9 I will fi nish a layout at an all-day
crop.
10 I will stop stalking Ali Edwards
(but if you’re reading this Ali:

Best described as “loose” velvet, fl ock has taken
the industry by storm. Now available on paper,
stickers, brads, ribbons, rub-ons, and, my
personal favourite, as a loose powder in a rainbow of
colours, fl ocked products bring both an edgy and a soft
look to your projects that simply command to be touched.
Flock is also extremely versatile—did you know that
it can be customized in a huge variety of ways? I am
going to show you how easy it is to change the colour of
your fl ocked products through the use of markers,
paint, or ink, and how you can experiment with many
types of adhesive to create completely different looks.
You will also see that fl ocking can “go” on just about
any project—from cards and layouts, and even on
mini albums.
Check out these fun fl ocked projects and see the
techniques and products that I (with some help from
my good friend Kimber) incorporated on each one!

Be Prepared. Have all your batteries charged, memory
cards cleared, and everything in your camera bag ready
to go. There’s nothing worse than having to pay $15 for a
set of AA batteries at the corner store, or learning that you
haven’t transferred Halloween pics to your computer and
now have room for only 12 photos. Also, if you have key
shots that you absolutely must get, make a list.
Remember the little things. Take pictures of the “pre-holiday”
moments. Baking cookies, making ornaments, and hanging
decorations are traditions that make the holidays special.
Try using a shallow depth of fi eld—F2.8—to take a yummy
still life of food.
Play Candid Camera. Take pics without warning your subject
ahead of time. Capture silly expressions, vivid conversations,
and quiet refl ections as well as the pose-and-say-cheese
shots. Odds are you’ll capture a lot of personality.

your guide to better holiday photosHoliday photos blurry or overexposed? Can’t capture the perfect shot of your lit tree? Then read on to discover these easy ways to improve your photography…just in time for the holidays. by MELANIE GODECKI
Try the continuous shooting mode. Not just
fun for sports photography, continuous
shooting is great for capturing any series
of action—including snowball fi ghts and
opening gifts—at up to 9 frames a second!
Shoot lots. For group shots, there really
isn’t a better plan of action. It’s inevitable
that someone will blink, but shooting many
frames will eventually lead to the ideal
shot. Check to see if your camera has a
custom self timer function—you can set
it to take up to 10 shots—while only
having to push the button and run into
the photo once.
Don’t photograph grey snow. The key to
crisp, white, snowy pictures is exposure
compensation. When your camera sees
a snowy scene, it thinks “oh my, this is
bright!” and compensates by making things
look darker. Manually override your set-
tings and boost the exposure by about 1
stop (+1 on a scale that usually goes from
-2 to +2).
Turn off the fl ash. For photos of anything
that twinkles, turn the fl ash off and put the
camera on a tripod. This is the best way
to capture the ambient glow of Christmas
trees, candles, and outdoor lights. Don’t
have a tripod? Use a tabletop, or in a pinch,
lean against something solid and hold your
breath while you push the shutter button.
The magic of 2nd Curtain Sync. So you
know how to take pictures of the lit up tree,
but what about the tree with a person be-
side it? SLR users will be able to change this
in their fl ash function settings, but point
and shooters don’t have to be left out—most
digicams have a mode for night snapshots,
usually represented by a dude in front of
the Eiffel tower. This mode of shooting will
leave the shutter open long enough to cap-
ture the twinkle of lights, and then send a
quick burst of fl ash at the end to illuminate
the person in the foreground. SCT

easy, detailed, expert Whatever level of diffi culty appeals to you, our easy, detailed, expert column has fantastic elements to try today!
For the fi rst four years of his life, my son had never experienced a New Year’s celebration.
I actually thought it would most likely be about four more years until he did. Boy was I was
wrong. Last New Year’s Eve, not only did my son stay up to watch the ball drop in Times
Square, but he continued his own celebration the next day. These fun and playful photos are from
his one-man-celebration, which I had a blast scrapping. I decided to use the festive occasion of the
photos to sneak in lots of what I normally don’t use on layouts about my boy: pink, purple, and bling.
Here’s what I came up with to showcase this festive little dude.
by L INDA
HARRISON
easy For a quick, yet celebratory layout, I started with a basic block pattern by aligning the two
photos in the center of the page. I let the remaining space (left by my photos) be my guide in decid-
ing the width and length of my journaling block. I printed my journaling onto cardstock and used it to
fi ll in the “block,” thus creating a rectangle in the center of my layout. With the journaling and photos
in place, I added a strip of patterned paper to one side to bring more colour onto the page. On the
opposite side of the photos, I added the title using die-cut letters and a strip of cardstock in a corre-
sponding colour. I fi nished the layout by adding some clear stars in a row, a “countdown” using glitter
number stickers, and rhinestones randomly placed throughout the layout.

detailed I changed things up a little
for my detailed layout. I kept the same
rectangular shape with the journaling
and photos, however I double-matted
them to add depth and colour. I moved
the title to the photo for a more interest-
ing look. For the journaling, I used the
same journaling block, but I left out two
words and enough space so I was able
to fi ll in those words with glitter letter
stickers. I split up the rectangular shape
of the layout by adding the patterned
paper strip horizontally across the page.
Finally, I embellished with clear stars,
rhinestones, and a glitter element
that tied in the glitter letters from
the journaling.
expert I put the party on the page for
the fi nal version of this New Year’s layout.
I kept the same basic rectangle design of
photos and journaling as in the fi rst two,
only I moved the journaling directly onto
the focal photo and placed the title on
the cardstock. I increased the focus on the
title by using a combination of large glitter
letters and black vinyl letter stickers. The
journaling was stepped up by making it part
of the focal photo. Strips of the patterned
paper were used to frame everything, thus
surrounding all the elements in the vari-
ety of colours. I painted a chipboard swirl
and added it horizontally across the page
to add both movement and whimsy. The
layout was fi nished off with the same clear
stars, rhinestones, and the addition of a
large glitter swirl. SCT

To create this fun, blanket-stitched border, I fi rst punched holes all around the outside of the circle with a paper piercer. This controlled where I stitched, and made it a lot easier for the needle to go through.

I added “faux” stitching to this tag in two great ways: fi rst, I used rub-on stitching on the red paper, and then, I created some 3D cross-stitches by applying PVA glue in thin X’s. Once com-pletely dry, I laid the silver foil overtop and gently rubbed with my fi nger.
To create this elegant fl ourish, I fi rst drew one by hand. Then, I paper pierced holes along the lines. Finally, I embroidered the fl ourish with red fl oss. Note: you could just as easily use a stamp or rub-on to create your fl ourish base. I then made some random folds in the red strip of paper and straight-stitched it to the front of my card.

for the holidaysOur designers have been busy dreaming up fun and festive

As defi ned by the Encarta Dictionary, the word “simple” means
a task that is able to be done quickly, and an end result that
is neither elaborate nor complicated. In our busy lives, this
sounds pretty good! What if there was a way to cut down on time
spent scrapbooking, but not on productivity? What if there was a way
to resist the temptation to add that last page embellishment and still
be happy with the fi nished product? Well, guess what? There is!
Our “Keeping it So Simple” article is designed to show you that simply
beautiful pages can be created in simply less time and with simply
less “stuff.” Take Vivian’s layout on the previous page, for example.
She uses repetition of shape (squares and hearts), as well as repeti-
tion of colour (red and pink) to create a simple harmony on her page.
Now, let’s check out what our other designers did...
1 make your photograph(s) the focal point of
your layout
2 create a large, clear title
3 leave adequate room for white space—
approximately one third of your layout
should be “open” or restful space
4 repeat design elements
5 use minimal embellishments—embellish-
ments should be purposeful, and help to tell
your story
6 create a defi ned space for your journaling
7 apply the rule of “odds”—the eye likes things
in 1’s, 3’s, or 5’s
8 incorporate “clean” lines and straight angles
9 create a visual triangle to help lead the eye
around the page
10 try to choose 3 main colours and use them
proportionately with one another—i.e. use 1
colour the most; another the 2nd most; and
the 3rd one the least
For this double page layout, I applied the rule of odds by working in threes (three individual photos of the kids, three arrows, three buttons, etc.). I also stuck with three main colours (using the green the most, the blues the second most, and the grey-taupe the least). Finally, I created lots of horizontal movement across both pages by using the wide green photo block, the blue strip, the arrows, and the repeated circles along the top.

In keeping with the clean and simple style, the embellishments I used are minimal, yet intentional. The “friends” button serves two purposes—it adds interest through texture and colour; and the word “friends” reinforces the story of the relationship between the boys. I also chose to leave lots of white space so that the eye was pulled in towards the focal points of the layout (the photo, the title, and the journaling).
game boys by Kitsa Scaffi di, Markham, ON supplies PATTERNED PAPER, Making Memories, American Crafts; LETTER STICKERS, American Crafts; BUTTON, American Crafts; FONT, Century Gothic
When you have a great photo (or a group of photos) that visually have a lot going for them (lots of colour, detail, or beautiful simplicity) you really don’t need much more. This is where white space comes in. In this case, it allows my photo to take centre stage, and, at the same time, it gives the eye a visual rest. As well, a simple line of stitching creates a frame around both the photo and the title.

Well, there you have it: fi ve beautiful layouts and ten
hands-on solutions to help you simplify your pages. So, the
next time you’re feeling pressed for time or, you think your
albums are just a little too “busy,” try any one of these tips
(or even all ten) and keep it so simple! SCT
For my Snow Time layout, I kept things simple by making sure that the focal point of the layout was the large photo of my son. I also wanted a large, clear title that related to the feel of my photo, so I chose to use silver and white chipboard (I thought that dark brown or black letters would take away from it). Finally, I created a visual triangle with the red embellishments (the word sticker, the button, and the epoxy brads).

based on a sketchIn a design rut? Looking for some new ideas and inspiration? Then our quarterly sketch is just right for you!
It happens to the best of us…we have the photos, we have the latest and
greatest products, but when we sit down to scrap, we fi nd we lack the nec-
essary inspiration. If only we had a sketch on hand…
Every issue, we ask our readers (yes, that includes you!) to take our based
on a sketch challenge—and every issue we receive some great submissions.
Here are just a few of the sketches submitted to us based on the sketch found
in our fall issue. fall sketch (designed by Anam Stubbington)
What an adorable photo! We loved that Adele chose to turn a multi-photo sketch into a single photo layout. Choos-ing to run the stripes of the patterned paper horizontally, instead of vertically, helps lead the eye from left to right and follows the horizontal line of the scalloped borders.

As 2008 draws to a close, we challenge you to choose some of your favourite photos and create a “year in review” layout. Please use this great sketch, also designed by Anam Stubbington, as inspiration. Visit us online at www.scrapbookandcards.com for details on how to send us your submissions for our spring publication (deadline—January 15th). As always, we can’t wait to see what you come up with!
show us your design!
Check out the great ways that Anam played up the “snow” theme of her page: she incorporated lots of translucent ac-cents; applied glossy accents to part of her title for some sparkle and dimension; and ran a border of white patterned pa-per underneath her photos to mimic the look of a deep snow bank.

This clean and simple sketch caught our eye because of the way that Stacy made it her own. She turned a multi-photo sketch into a single-photo layout, replaced the scalloped borders with straight lines, and chose to move her journaling block up beside the photo instead of underneath.

Look at the beautiful page border that Kim created from inked Making Memories stickers. Also, look at the placement of the grouped red brads—3 groups of 3 mimic holly berries and create a visual triangle on the page.
Paula created this layout for an online challenge—“how much is too much,” (http://hmitm.blogspot.com). The challenge was to use 5 patterned papers, 5 stamps, 5 ribbons, 5 embellishments, and 5 fasteners. Great job, Paula!

something specialOur something special is a project or layout that inspires us to drop everything and create…and this issue’s project is no exception.
Greta created this stunning snowfl ake frame using chipboard snowfl akes from Maya Road and
a wide variety of mediums and techniques. She used cool blues, silvery hues, and small hits
of contemporary black to create an elegant and harmonious backdrop that speaks wonder-
fully to the season. This frame would make the perfect gift, but, on second thought, it may be just too
pretty to give away! SCT

When it’s cold outside—bring the fun indoors! Imagine creating your own winter wonderland with everything in it that
warms your heart. We chose bitty houses, lots of polka-dots, sweet snowmen and, of course, lots of Sugar CoatingTM! Nothing captures
the beauty of freshly fallen snow like a layer of Sugar CoatingTM glitter! This sweet little town was brought to life using our Cold SpellTM collection, Jewels, Crushed VelvetTM brads, Sugar CoatedTM cardstock, La-di-dotsTM velvet cardstock & several papers from the PotpourriTM
collections. With winter upon us, there’s no time to waste. Cure winter blues with a spoon full of sugar!!!
