Faculty in Spotlight

Dr. Omar Gelo is the director of the International Ph.D. Program in Psychotherapy Science, where he also lectures and coordinates a research group in the field of psychotherapy science. Since 2014 he is Associate Professor for Dynamic Psychology and director of the Bachelor and Master Program in Psychology at the University of Salento (Italy).

"I was born close to Milan, I spent the first years with my grandparents in Sicily, came backto the North of Italy with 4. With 19 I went to Urbino (the home town of Raffaello), in theCentre of Italy, to study Psychology. Right after, I moved to Germany until 2007 for my PhDand research activity. Thereafter, in 2007 I lived for one year in Vienna. Since 2008 I havebeen living between Vienna and Lecce. As a consequence of all this, I have been steadilyconfronted with the issue of multiplicity: multiple places, multiple people, multiple waysof living, multiple habits, multiple worldviews, multiple cultures, etc. This was, of course, connected to a steady feeling of being-in-between. Multiplicity and being-in-between arebasic forms of human experience; in my case, these experiences have been even moremeaningful in shaping myself. It is not easy to deal with these forms of experience, thatcarry many risks with them, but also possess an enormous potential. The challenge ofmultiplicity is to learn to recompose the several parts our experience is necessarily madeof; the challenge of being-in-between is to use these boundary zones to learn to exploreand make the unknown known. Overcoming these challenges results in a richer, morearticulated, and more differentiated identity. What I have learned by means of myconstant multiple being-in-between is pluralism. In my view, pluralism deals with theacknowledgment and engagement with multiplicity and diversity (i.e., otherness), togetherwith the ability of tolerating the unavoidable feeling of being-in-between connected withsuch attitude. Pluralism is not an easy attitude to achieve and maintain. It requires theability of tolerating the feeling of disorganization and fear that legitimately arises when weconfront ourselves with unfamiliar or unknown. However, pluralism – in whatever form(personal, social cultural, political, scientific, etc.) – is almost a moral attitude, towardwhich every individual (but also every society) should strive. My personal pluralism haslead to a professional pluralism, which is reflected in my research interests. The SFU hasbeen always characterized by this very same pluralistic attitude (pluralism of researchmethods, pluralism of psychotherapy schools, etc.). This is the reason why there could nothave been more fertile ground for me and my professional development than SFU.”

giving a talk at Oxford University

In September 2016, I had the privilege to make a presentation at a conference held at Oxford University, the oldest university in the English-speaking world and second worldwide. Oxford is home to many notable alumni including 28 Nobel laureates! Oxford's vast prestige and reputation is indisputable…It never crossed my mind that I would get an opportunity to have an " Oxford experience," but I did thanks to my supervisor, Dr. Erzsebet Tothand the SFU grant commission. The conference preparation was quite rigorous due to the various strict rules of the organizers besides researching on the topic. The first rule that almost threatened my motivation was the banning of power point presentations, except when showing clips and images. Previously, I was convinced that it was impossible to make a presentation devoid of power point at an international conference, to say the least. However, the conference organizers believe that power point presentations do not foster discussion and but kill it. At this point I had a mind block, then came out of the box and became creative. I made a picture poster and travelled light to Oxford. I did not regret it.The conference was unique with 12 delegates from all over the world from different disciplines, talking about the same topic from different perspectives. I was the only psychotherapist. The organizers had banned the use of academic titles and allowed only the institutional affiliations. That created a relaxed, uniform atmosphere to share knowledge and network. It was a very enriching and unforgettable experience.

Being the grand-nephew of Sigmund Freud is a priviledge. Having a grandfather intelligence captain in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, a father an intel sergeant in the British army, a mother in the Polishresistance, and an uncle serving in the Austrian State police after 1947is already a story that could be made into a fascinating film. Our Ph.D candidate, Peter Schütz is definitely a noteworthy person. He started his multifaceted careed as a boy scout leader, then trained to be a diver, a pilot, a paramedic, and later became private investigator, who has worked for 5 years for Vienna police department as supervising psychologistBesides, he is a group trainer and therapist trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in London and USA together with Helmut Jelem, Brigitte Gross, Siegrid Sommer 1983-1989. He is the founder of the Austrian www.nlpzentrum.atPeter Schütz very early understood that good organizational structures and research were the key elements of acceptance of a modality in the old continent. He organized and co-authored 2 control groups and one meta study. He regularly publishes articles about NLP in popular magazines and is invited to give talks on the radio. Besides, he recently co-organised a conference at Sigmund Freud University in Vienna.

Dr. Keiko Nakahama

It has been getting more and more important to have a global perspective in Japan. Indeed, populations of foreign students in the university and foreign employees in the company where I work continue to rise, and therefore I have more psychotherapy sessions with foreign clients. I feel that the experiences of living in the U.S. for six years and studying at SFU Vienna for a couple of years were very valuable for me not only as a psychotherapist, but also as a human. Some of these experiences were being a minority, feeling and showing respect to other cultures and histories, and realizing my own identity. My experiences of interacting with a variety of cultures and people have helped me to develop an empathy and rapport with clients in psychotherapy. One of my additional jobs that I do is to teach aviation personnel a critical incident stress management method and work with them if necessary. Their environment is very international. My experience to spend time in other cultures helps me in this field as well. Some of the employees work at foreign airlines. It is very important to have a multicultural perspective to understand the background of their work place. Without acceptance of differences, it is difficult to provide an appropriate support to them. In the modern era of global expansion, it will be necessary for a psychotherapist to have a multicultural perspective and sense of value.
