Dear Friends,

Wow! It’s been a joy-filled year celebrating 50 years of White Bear Center for the Arts!

Last December, on a cold winter night, a committee of big-hearted volunteers gathered to begin the creative planning. They started by asking: How can our celebrations reflect WBCA’s goals to engage more people in the community? How can we shape activities to extend a genuine welcome to all who wish to participate? How can our actions “spread the word” beyond WBCA’s art-filled classrooms and walls?

In January, a brightly painted 10 X 10 pop-up tent with the words “Then-Now-50-WOW!” was born. Thanks to the many volunteers, it quickly hit the road. They started by visiting area high schools to ensure students knew about WBCA’s many offerings for teens, including the High School Visual Arts Contest and WriteNow! Contest. With more youth engaged WBCA’s youth advisory council is now up and running.

In May, when both the city of White Bear Lake and the state of Minnesota passed resolutions declaring May 16, 2018, “White Bear Center for the Arts Day,” our creative committee of volunteers were inspired to start popping-up all around the region, sharing the declaration, while inviting hundreds of new people to become part of the arts. Throughout the summer, volunteers also popped-up at art openings, and Marketfest. Along the way hands-on art activities were shared with hundreds of children and families.

Staff and volunteers also started digging through five decades worth of files including meeting minutes, newspaper articles, memorabilia, and photographs, charting out milestones while also discovering early movers and shakers and volunteers who helped carry the organization through years of growth and many challenging times. From this information, Roberta Johnson compiled a written history of the Center in a series of articles which were generously published by the White Bear Press. This brought WBCA’s story and impact to thousands of readers. We also began compiling an oral history. Over the past 8 months, Steve Goranson has interviewed and videotaped a parade of people involved in the art center’s evolution. The finished documentary will make its world debut during our final 50th celebration event, here on December 18th. Please mark your calendars!

And finally, this fall, two very special donors sponsored wonderful celebrations in honor of WBCA: the parties at 7 Vines (for 18+) and an all-inclusive free 50th Fabulous Family Day at the Center. Why? Because there are moments in time when we simply must stop, give thanks for the journey, the companions along the way, and you got it… just CELEBRATE!

There is so much more to come. The next 50 years are already in the making. WBCA’s future will be a continuum of people serving people, hearts opening hearts, and artists making art.

Our gratitude runs deep. Our lanterns burn bright. Together, our souls take flight.

Suzi Hudson

WBCA is here today because of the many thousands of volunteers and supporters who make it all possible.

Special thanks to our 50th Anniversary Committee: Kim Ford, Donna Bruhl, (co-chairs), Sue Ahlcrona, Danielle Cezanne, Robert Cuerden, Cary Cardozo, Mary Gove, Roberta Johnson, Liz Kasper, Mary Levins, Sara Nephew, Nor Olson, Bon Sommerville, Lori Swanson, Susan Hartzell Vannelli.

Special thanks to Si & Vicki Ford.

Artist Talk: Smashing the InvisibleMary Simon-Casati & Dr. Liliya L.R. WilliamsMary Simon-Casati, Artist, and Dr. Liliya Williams, Astrophysicist, will talk about the intersection of art and physics. Both scientist and artist ask how we know the world? We are investigators. What exactly is color, shape, space, volume, and light? These are the means by which physicists artists have long flirted with the limits of representation. Join us as we examine these concepts in a conversation led by Bethany Whitehead, Program and Communications Director at MRAC.

Cooking My Way Home: Journey from Field, to Kitchen, to PageBeth Dooley Winter isn’t considered the season for local food, but in truth, it’s the best time to cook. It’s winter that defines what it means to “stay home,” filling the house with the scents of simmering stews and baking bread as the windows steam. Covering our local food movement over the past 35 years, Beth Dooley, James Beard award winning writer who has authored ten cookbooks and a food memoir, will share her journey through our Northern Heartland’s food scene with stories of the farmers, artisans, and producers, who are redefining what it means to eat well especially in winter. Through notes from the field and kitchen notes that have been gathered in cookbooks and stories, Beth has carved a career and built the case for home cooking that defines what it means to “come home” and create community.

Beth Dooley has covered the local food scene in the Northern Heartland for 30 years: she writes for the Taste section of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune, and appears regularly on KARE 11 (NBC) television and MPR Appetites with Tom Crann. She co-authored The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen with Sean Sherman, winner of the James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook. Other titles include: Savory Sweet: Preserves from a Northern Kitchen, In Winter’s Kitchen: Growing Roots and Breaking Bread in the Northern Heartland, Minnesota’s Bounty: The Farmers Market Cookbook, The Northern Heartland Kitchen and co-authored Savoring the Seasons of the Northern Heartland with Lucia Watson, among other books. In addition to writing about local food in the Northern Heartland, Beth guides local food trips for Wilderness Inquiry via Taste of the Apostles.

Mindfulness and Creativity in Poetry and ArtGreta Gaard, Ph.D. in English, MSW in Clinical Social Work & Mina Leierwood, M.A. in EducationMindfulness practice teaches one how to set aside habitual patterns of thought, and to pay attention to a deeper level of sensations, images, emotions. Similarly, both good writing and expressive art address life’s greatest questions through a grounded awareness of sensations, environments, other beings, and earthly elements. This workshop introduces mindfulness practice accompanied by the practices of reading and writing poetry, and creating art.

In the morning session, we will read short poems that use mindfulness as a lens on life itself — poems by Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, Rumi, Lynn Ungar, David Wagoner, Naomi Shihab Nye — discussing these poems in terms of form, metaphor, sensory detail, rhythm and stanzas.  The format alternates mindful poetry reading, reflection, discussion, and the practice of mindful poetry-writing.

In the afternoon session, participants will explore paper, ink, watercolor and assemblage to reflect and expound upon their written works. No artistic experience is necessary, only a sense of curiosity is needed. We’ll be learning to trust our intuitive, artist-selves, and with a little coaxing, your inner spirit is sure to come and play.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have created a complementary pairing of poetry and art.

VISITING ARTISTS Abstract Figure or PortraitCalvin deRuyterPeople understand realism, and they can recognize non-objective abstract painting. But between those two points are a multitude of areas where one can intermingle the concepts from both. In this two-day workshop we will explore the abstracted portrait/ figure. We will talk about the concepts of abstraction by looking at other visual artists and how they have used abstract elements to meet their specific goals while still maintaining the viewer’s perception that the painting is of a human being. We will discuss color, texture, shapes/forms, and composition(s) with the abstracted portrait/figure in mind. We will work with drawing tools and mixed watermedia (acrylic and/or watercolor), although you can ultimately apply the principles we discuss to any medium. Students must bring photographs that feature figures in some way, or other references from which to work. Photographs of people engaged in activities are especially helpful, or figures in interesting positions and poses. This workshop should be a starting point for you to push your boundaries beyond where your current art work has taken you, while keeping your portraits/figures fresh, exciting and uniquely yours. This workshop should be perfect for any student willing to reach new artistic levels and who wants to “loosen up” their paintings. Students interested in experimentation while learning new techniques will gain the most from this workshop, whether a new artist or a more established artist that is feeling “stuck.”* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list.

Painting Contemporary Figurative PaintingsKaren Knutson Learn to loosen up and paint from the heart! We will be drawing more contemporary versions of people, in the loosest fashion possible. Simplicity is the name of the game in this workshop. Many techniques for texture, how to build layers for depth, working with limited colors, and lots of fun tricks done with rubbing alcohol and other tools, are just some of the new skills that you will learn. One day, we will learn how to do wire drawings, which will help the students to loosen up! (Wire drawings are done with permanent markers and they resemble wire sculptures when completed.) This workshop is geared for all levels of acrylic students. We will also be trying other mixed media for detail work, like caran d’ ache crayons and prismacolor pencils. Karen Knutson is a very sought after instructor who believes that painting should be fun, but also likes to teach good design at the same time! www.karenknutson.com

Drawing From the Paper UpJulie EricksonThis class is for those who have a desire to draw but have had little or no prior drawing instruction. It is also for those who have held back from signing up for beginning drawing classes, fearing it may be assumed that the ‘basics’ are already known. This is a true introductory drawing class, and it will be assumed that you have not had much, if any, prior drawing instruction. The atmosphere will be light and fun and no ‘natural ability’ is required, so come and discover the joys of drawing. After completing this class, you will have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to draw on your own and sign up for other drawing classes. We will learn the differences in and uses of various pencils, pencil strokes, papers, erasers, shading and measuring tools, how to lay out a drawing, as well as some bonus advanced tips and techniques. Drawing will be done from photos provided by the instructor.* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list.

IkebanaCarol LuiIkebana literally means, “the arrangement of living material in water.” It is the art of Japanese flower arrangement developed in the 15th century and has its roots in ancient Chinese flower arrangement. It began as an aid to meditation and as a way to personalize nature and reflect on the human experience. There are several thousand schools of Ikebana at present, Ichiyo and Ohara being among the most popular. The Ichiyo School was founded in 1937 and is one of the ‘modern’ schools of Ikebana, famous for innovative, free style of Japanese flower arrangement.Carol will teach the first lesson in the Ichiyo School, the Upright Style. The second class will be in the Slanting Form. Students will use the instructor’s vase and needle holder (kenzan). The vase will be returned to instructor after class. If students prefer to find out more about keeping their arrangement intact by bringing their own vase and kenzan, please read about what to purchase at www.WhiteBearArts.org. Five Thread Sami Bracelet Kim Bakken-Parr The Sami People are the indigenous people of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. They have a long history and tradition of reindeer breeding and to use all parts of the reindeer, they make beautiful jewelry out of reindeer leather. In this class we will start by braiding pewter thread (nickel-free alloy with 4% silver) around either a piece of leather, more pewter thread or even horsehair. The ends of the bracelet are stitched closed using sinew thread and a button clasp made from shed reindeer antler tips is attached. First Step Beginning OilsJulie Dobson MinerAre you interested in painting the preferred medium of the masters? If so, let’s get you off on the right foot in this beginning oils class! This class is designed to give you the very basics of oil painting. We will cover materials, the basic set up, safe practices as well as concepts and techniques. If you just love it (and we think you will), Julie, our beginning oils instructor, will build on your knowledge and keep you progressing into the next class, Next Step Beginning to Intermediate Oils. Julie will take you through your first project and paint it step by step with you. With some guidance, you choose your second painting sub-ject where you will build on what you learned in the first. There are handouts and access to videos to help you on your own time or in class. Most classes will begin with a demo, small discussion/lecture or sharing to increase your knowledge and encourage you. If you have never painted in oils, it’s been a long time or have struggled because you didn’t get the basics, this is the class for you. Starter kits that include most of what you’ll need are available for purchase at WBCA. * Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list. Next Step Beginning & Intermediate Oils Julie Dobson MinerIf you have taken the First Step Beginning Oils or have painted in oils before this class is for you. This ongoing class will take you through the entire process from concept to completion of a painting. Julie will gently help you first paint what you see and eventually will let you work independently. Most classes will begin with a demo, small discussion/lecture or sharing to increase your knowledge of all the aspects of art including drawing, value, color, planning for success and how to move beyond your reference /not be restricted by it. The instructor will use traditional oil paints, however, students can also use water mixable oils or acrylics. Julie promotes learning to mix colors by use of a suggested limited palette (warm and cool primaries) as well as limited use of solvents and safe handling practices. Beginner student projects will be offered and eventually progress to help you find your own artistic voice. Julie has a wealth of knowledge to share, and continuing students will keep growing in their knowledge and skill level. Starter kits that include most of what you’ll need are available for purchase at WBCA. * Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list. Great iPhone Photography Debra DreslerThis comprehensive iPad and iPhone class will make your photographs look professional and grow your skills using the editing app, Snapseed. This is the “go to” for most photographers. This class will teach you better exposure, focus, com-position, tricks and tips of the iphone. We will also cover resolution vs. compression, backups, jpgs, and tiff. We will look at the 25 best editing and camera apps, places to show your photos and websites to sell your work, and where to print your treasures on to clothing, canvas, glass, bags and more. There will be a resource list for tripods and additional lenses. Basic knowledge of the operation of your device is necessary, but No photography experience needed. Just bring your iphone or ipad with Snapseed app downloaded onto your device. A fine clear tip stylus is nice, but not required. Amazon has one called a Meko stylus.

On day two, you will learn to use the app Snapseed (free from the App store). This great all-purpose app will give you all its editing and enhancing features. Snapseed also has facial portrait enhancing, adding text, and white balance and sharpening. Time and weather permitting, we will go on a photo Safari around town to take to practice our skills in the classroom. IOS Apple only, Sorry no android, Galaxy etc.
