The Crefeld Permaculture Center This past spring/summer, a group of thirteen graduate students from Philadelphia University’s Sustainability Masters Program collaborated with Crefeld to create a Permaculture Center. Together, they planned, designed and built a portion of the center in just seven weeks. If you visit Crefeld today, you will see that the center includes a greenhouse and a chicken coop with egg laying chickens! This is the phase one of the greening of Crefeld’s campus.

It all started on a beautiful day in May. The graduate students and community members of Chestnut Hill along with The Crefeld School came together for a charrette to discuss the upcoming project. A charrette is an all day brainstorming session. It is a quick and effective way to figure out the base idea and plan of what is going to be done.

After the charrette, the class met to narrow down ideas of what they thought would be the most beneficial for the school to have immediately. A greenhouse, incorporating aquaponic technology, and a chicken coop were decided upon. The class separated into different focus groups to figure out the best design solutions to make the project a success.

The graduate students worked tirelessly to ensure that the project would be built in one week in July 2014. For the build week, many volunteers came together to lend a hand: students, staff, board members, parents, alumni and, of course, the PhilaU graduate students. Thanks to everyone who helped bring this permaculture center to life!

Growing numbers of people are embracing greening as a core behavior in the 21st-century economy. But are we doing enough? Given the increasing threats of human-induced global warming, sea level rise, catastrophic weather patterns, and habitat destruction, designers are under pressure to make significant developments in sustainable design.

The leap from the current low standards of greening to more ambitious sustainable design requires a fundamental shift to a regenerative model where buildings clean the air and water, send energy back to grid, and produce zero waste. Such a jump will require us to realize that we are living in a manmade climate that is hotter, less predictable than in previous years, and threatening to human existence. This conversation enables us to think beyond green as an afterthought as we use sustainable practices to demonstrate our own adaptation and resilience.

Rob Fleming is a LEED® Accredited Professional and a registered architect with over 15 years' experience of teaching, research and practice in sustainable design. He is the co-creator and Director of the award winning Master of Science in Sustainable Design Program at Philadelphia University where he holds the Salaman Family Chair in Sustainable Design. His new book, Design Education for a Sustainable Future was released by Routledge/Earthscan earlier last year. Rob is a Sustainability Fellow at Re:Vision Architecture in Philadelphia where he consults and facilitates integrated design charrettes.
