PHIL STOCKER, NSA Winter Fair kicks off new season of activities for NSA

The NSA Eastern Region brings you arefreshed format of a combined Winter Fairand Conference – practical farmer style - atMelton Mowbray market and kicking off anew season of NSA activities.

If we thought 2017 was busy then look out because 2018 isgoing to bring all that and more as we approach our exitfrom the EU, in theory just a little over 12 months away. Thestrong likelihood is an extended transition period which willbe essential to help us, and the EU, make changes without falling off a cliff. Thebest thing we can do is spend all our efforts making the most of it – reducing therisks our exit may bring and optimising the opportunities it presents, and there areplenty of both.

Assuming producers are doing as good a job as they can, with levels ofproductivity good and costs under control, there are then two things essential forindustry profitability – a market place that gives adequate return, and a Govt farmsupport programme that, amongst other things, offsets the costs of things that cantbe recouped from the market and gives reward for the many things that farmers dofor public benefit but that aren’t adequately paid for.

There is a phenomenal amount of work and preparations being done behind thescenes and some days there feels to be a real wind of change blowing throughDefra corridors, but after more than 18 months of discussion and negotiation weare only just about to formally discuss the crucial subject of trade. Michael Gove’srecent speeches have meant the future direction for farm support is becomingclearer. We cannot ignore the overall direction and we will see those words‘environment’ and ‘public good’ used more and more.

I am confident that, due in no small measure to the work of the NSA, Ministers anddecision makers have a far higher level of understanding of the value of sheepfarming than they did previously, and know what the impacts could be if they getthings wrong. The most fundamental thing to get right, with 96% of the 40% of UKsheepmeat that is exported going to the EU, is continued tariff free access beyondour departure.

EASTERN REGION OFFICIALSChairman : Dan PhippsVice Chairman : Robert SpinksRegional Manager :Jonathan Barber

We do need to be investing in marketsfurther afield but this won’t happenovernight and it will bring with it theprospect of free trade deals that couldpresent some real competition andproblems in our marketplace. We thenhave to safeguard the budget allocationto farming and rural development, justify its investment, and secure itsbetter targeting.

Make no mistake we are facing hugechange that we need to do our best toread, influence, and adapt to, but thereis plenty within our industry that makesgood sense and that we can argue for.

The Eastern Region Winter Fair starts ahuge annual programme of the NSAhelping engage you with the topics thatwill set the foundations for your futureand that will help you to not just survivebut hopefully to thrive. I hope you enjoyand make the most of this event and Ilook forward to seeing you there.

TRIM YOUR COSTS, NOTYOUR EWES’ FEET

Many UK sheep producers are cuttingthe costs of flock lameness byimplementing the Five-Point LamenessReduction Plan, which includes aninvestment in vaccination alongsideprompt treatment of any affected sheep, and other prudent managementinterventions.

This proven long term lamenessreduction plan builds flock resilience todisease, reduces the infection challengeon the farm and establishes immunity. The result is a significant reduction inthe number of lame sheep on the farmand increased profitability.

Lameness costs you money by causinghealth and welfare problems. Firstly, inewes, lameness leads to reducedgrazing and sub optimal nutrition, whichcan cause twin lamb disease, reducedfertility and poor milk production. Inlambs, lameness delays finishing andeven if they do finish, lame lambs areunfit to travel, which presents asignificant challenge when trying tocomply with UK animal welfarelegislation.

ADAS has calculated the cost oflameness per affected ewe to be£89.801. This means that if the incidencein any given flock is 10%, the cost oflameness is £8.98 for every ewe in theflock. Another recent study has shownthat flocks could save £3.86 per ewe per

year by stopping routine foot trimmingand minimising foot bathing to controlfootrot – two management practicesthat have been associated with a higherprevalence of lameness2.

Footrot is the main cause of lamenesson UK sheep farms. Vaccination is anaid to preventing lameness in a flock bystimulating immunity to (and reducinglesions caused by) Dichelobacternodosus, the bacteria causing footrot.Vaccination should be on a whole flockbasis and timed to coincide with timesof high disease risk on the farm.

Computer modeling has shown a costbenefit for whole flock vaccination iflameness incidence due to footrot ismore than 2% of sheep affected3.
