H einzels Winter Fairy-tale” is a unique mar-ket which delights

young and old, and turns Cologne’s Old Town into a Christmas wonderland. Like the guild alleys which once surrounded the Alter Markt (old market square), the la-nes at the Christmas market are arranged according to themes.

The Heinzelmännchen’s hab-its and partialities come alive for all visitors in nine themed alleys and a spectacular ice skating world of adventure.

T here’s one person who’s simply part of the furniture at the

Christmas market in Colog-ne’s Old Town: Gilbert, the Market Gendarme.

Clad in his original Napole-on-era uniform, he does the daily rounds at “Heinzels Winter Fairytale” whate-ver the weather, his French charm ensuring that securi-ty and order are maintained and that the crowds remain amused. “I make the visitors laugh, entertain them and remind them to keep a clo-se watch over their bags, for instance. That usually goes

down well”, says Gilbert in his endearing French accent. Gilbert moved to Paris when he was 13 years old. He has made his living on the road as a travelling entertainer ever since, moving from city to city. But, each year, Gilbert returns to the Heinzelmänn-chen during the Christmas season. After all, the little el-ves certainly wouldn’t want to give up their charming market gendarme. The indus-trious Heinzels have known French gendarmes from days of yore, when Cologne was occupied by the French. They took likeable Gilbert to their hearts straight away.

GILBERT – A MARKET GENDARME WITH A LONG HISTORY

Marvel in astonishment at blacksmith’s craft as it was 500 years ago, with hammer, anvil and open fire, perfor-med by master blacksmith Thomas Hammer. He forges lucky horseshoes live for vi-sitors in Craftsmen’s Alley. The metal nails, hammered into specific shapes, are lent individual character thanks to a personal engraving.

P ottery is their passion: The brothers Thomas and Peter Hansen

from Wachtberg-Adendorf are the fourth generation of their family to craft high-qua-lity pottery items.

The potter’s workshop was founded many decades ago, by their great-grandfather.

Pottery in the 4th GenerationAlthough everything from clay onion-shaped vases to tableware was produced in the family workshop over many decades, the two Han-sen brothers began to spe-cialise in individual product lines over ten years ago. Thomas has been crafting the well-known mustard pots, cutlery pots and “Ko-

AT FIRST HAND

Each year, the Heinzelmänn-chen invite artisans from all over Europe to show the visi-tors to “Heinzels Winter Fairy-tale” exactly how the Old Town used to be when craftsmen’s guilds operated in the lanes and alleys, pursuing their va-rious disciplines. To recreate the hustle and bustle of those days of yore, the Alter Markt features a Craftsmen’s Al-ley in which the blacksmith, glassblowers and potters are joined by soap boilers, wood turners and co., all pre-senting their unusual arts and crafts.

elsch” beer glasses made from clay for almost all of Cologne’s breweries for over a decade. His brother Peter makes ceramic lamps which guarantee atmospheric light in your house or garden. The brothers are the last two full-time master potters working in their village - the work-force used to number 14.

In the soap manufactory Sa-von Vivre handmade soaps with wonderful odours are boiled and stamped accor-ding to an old traditional french recipe. There is a wide rage of smells such as anise, cardamom, mint or grapef-ruit. Depending on the type, the soaps can have a calming or even cholesterol-reducing effect on the body.

SOAP WORKS

Watch the chips fly! Wood sculptor Tadek creates gi-gantic sculptures from tree trunks at his workshop on the Alter Markt square. As soon as he finishes compo-sing a piece of craftsmans-hip in his mind, he seizes his chain saw and starts work. He fine-tunes his sculptures using a hammer and chisel in no time at all.

WOOD SCULPTOR

Handicrafts also play a part in the decoration of “Hein-zels Winter Fairytale”. Paul Gartner, a carver from South Tyrol specialising in religious figures, created the large crib in Antiques Alley and the tree spirit on the large tree at the end of Craftsmen’s Alley. Wood sculptor Tadek also left his mark on the tavern at the “Zur Eule” hunting lodge: the lodge’s supporting posts are decorated with large owl sculptures.

ENORMOUS ENTRANCE PORTALS WITH DANCING HEINZELMÄNNCHEN

T obias Meyer can virtually be termed the Heinzelmänn-

chen’s best friend these days. The 40-year-old mas-ter carpenter from Holzap-pel has built almost all the huts at “Heinzels Winter Fairytale”. The special con-structions are particularly unique, and showcase his skilled craftsmanship. This year, magnificent new cons-tructions amaze the visitors.

What have you built for the Heinzelmännchen this year?

The most spectacular de-velopment is the three enor-

mous entrance portals on the Heumarkt, each of which is six metres high. My team and I worked on these for al-most five months.

What’s the most special thing about these new

entrance gates?

Each gate is decorated with 24 backlit windows with milled and in parts gilded ornaments, and 15 turrets. I estimate that each gate fea-tures around 800 individu-al milled parts. This requi-red delicate craftsmanship. A Heinzel musical clock is built into the centre of each

Goodies from Sweets Alley

There is one particular alley which makes the hearts of those sweet-toothed Hein-zelmännchen sing: Sweets Alley. It’s home to a wide range of sweet treats whe-re all pleasure-loving con-noisseurs are bound to find their heart’s desire. Several new delicacies await visitors this year. Marika Mojsovski conjures up “heavenly” spe-cialities from hand-picked ingredients. The Chocola-te Museum entices visitors with its freshly-cast animal figures made from solid cho-colate. Beekeeper Markus Kronhardt doesn’t just sell delicious varieties of ho-

ney from his home region of the Eifel, but also offers customers the opportuni-ty to adopt ill and weak bee colonies. Next door, the delicious fragrance of fresh caramel wafts out of the new caramel kitchen. Other mouth-watering nib-bles available include nou-gat from Provence, freshly baked strudel, handmade sweets from the confectio-ner’s, almond pastries, Aa-chener Printen gingerbread, Dresden Christmas stollen, burnt almonds, spiced bis-cuits and much more.

NEW!

Heinzels love organic products: the Heinzels’ market has been certified organic for many years now. Around 50% of the delicacies adorning the culinary stands are produced using organically-certified foodstuffs. “Organic signs” on the stands provide a clear overview of the organic products used.

archway. The Heinzelmänn-chen dance in the clock to its music half-hourly and hourly. I’m sure this will prove a visitor magnet.

What makes “Heinzels Winter Fairytale” so

magical for you?

The organisers have a gre-at love of detail, and that’s obvious all over the Christ-mas market. The sights the visitors enjoy far exceed the usual standard. It’s really great fun to be involved, and to be part of the Hein-zel world.

W ith a running length of over 300 metres,

the unique skating rink at “Heinzels Winter Fairytale” offers an unforgettable ice skating experience comple-te with a magical atmosphe-

ICE SKATING WORLD OF ADVENTURE - UNTIL 6TH JANUARY

“HEINZELS WINTER FAIRYTALE“ IS CLIMATE-NEUTRAL

The ice rink on the Heumarkt has been operating using certified green electricity from RheinEnergie for three years, and is CO2-neutral. The technical surveillance association TÜV Rheinland certified the ice rink “cli-mate-neutral” in 2015. This is an accolade unique in Germany. And that’s not all: this year, “Heinzels Winter Fairytale” will be operated completely using certified green electricity from RheinEnergie.

they can watch the Heinzels skiing on the roof. And, for anyone wondering why the way back seemed so hard after completing the circuit should know that there’s a gradient which creates a slight height difference.

Children can even take an ice test under Jack’s eagle eye

Jack the Ice Policeman has been delighting our visi-tors since the 2016 season. Whether it’s his balloon figu-res, his ice policeman’s cau-tions for overly loud laughter or causing congestion on the ice rink, or his skill at sleight

JACK THE ICE POLICEMANof hand, this Dutch street artist has countless tricks, fun and games up his sleeve which are bound to bring a smile to absolutely everybo-dy’s face. Jack ensures that our visitors have an unfor-gettable time on the ice.

The sugar baker in the Na-schgasse on the Alter Markt manufactures lollipops in his lollipop workshop. Here chil-dren can twist their individu-al lollipops according to their own taste. The lollipops are produced only with natural flavouring. Delicious!

In Antiques Alley, visitors can admire a crib featuring man-sized figures carved from the trunks of Swiss pine trees. Next to the huge figu-res, some of which weigh up to 250 kg, children will feel as tiny as the Heinzelmänn-chen themselves!

CRIB

At the Christmas post office, the kids can put their biggest Christ-mas wishes down on Heinzel writing paper, or simply write to Father Christmas or the Christ Child to share their innermost thoughts and feelings. All letters posted until 20th December will receive an answer before Christmas. And, what’s more, the special Heinzel postage stamps are available at the Christmas Post Of-fice too. This year, we will be sup-porting terminally ill people and their relatives with therapeutic horseback riding with the markup on the usual postage price.
